Answer: | I've had the version of this smoker (one generation earlier) for 7 or 8 years. I've kept it outside on the deck the entire time with a Masterbuilt smoker cover. I use it at least a dozen times a year and put only a modest amount of effort into care. The most important care factor is making sure it dries out after use. I wipe the gaskets but for the most part leave the interior as is (except when I cook something really messy). AFTER I finish I run it at max heat (275F) for about 30 minutes with the vent open to cook off water and bake in residual fat (seasoning). It's that baked in fat that really protects your appliance more so that any amount of elbow grease! (you see what I did there :) Results: Mostly due to failure of the smoker cover (which I have since replaced) water was able to get in. Even before that some rusting of the wood chip pan was occurring. I had a common problem with the grounding of the heating element causing electrical failures (popping my GFI) which I replaced with a significant amount of effort and several scraped knuckles. I've read that this is much easier in later models. So I'd say 10 years is reasonable given modest proper care (most important of which being to cook the inside dry after use!). And that's 10 years of freakin awesome smoked meats with almost no effort maintaining the correct heat. Turn it on, go to work, come home to BBQ. |

Answer: | i have time to use the unit twice, once with chips, soaked about 30 minutes, and once without. When I used chips, I added new ones about every 30-40 minutes. |

Answer: | Please DO NOT use on wooden deck. The heat from my smoker was too hot and caught my whole house on fire. The fire inspector said always use on high heat material like concrete, and no wood or grass. |

Answer: | Not difficult. The racks, drip pan and chip box come out and can be cleaned in your sink or dishwasher. The inside of the smoker is gradually "cured" by the smoke and will take on a dark coating. You can clean this like you would an oven, but you really don't need to. I do recommend that you clean the smoke coating from the glass window each time so you can see the meat cooking. This can be cleaned with soap and water, or with a non abrasive cleaner. Be sure to get all of the cleaner off the smoker so you don't have any issues with the cleaner adding unwanted flavors to the next cooking. |

Answer: | There is a small door for the chip pan to go in and out of. Since the chip-pan-door is at the bottom of the unit, you lose very little heat/smoke even if you were to leave it open while loading chips. The chip-pan-door will not stay open unless you hold it open. |
Question: | How often do I need to change the wood chips? It seems like mine quit smoking after about 20 minutes |
Answer: | The chops will smoke heavily for about 30 minutes but leave them in until all you gave is ash product. Fill completely again. |
Question: | Does the top come off at all? I use this for smoking cheese, and need to adjust the lid so it dont get to hot in the smoker |
Answer: | It's the wrong kind of smoker for smoking cheese. You are looking for a cold smoker. This is a hot smoker that is made to cook and smoke meat at the same time and will have a temp. of 160 to 180 degrees F. Cold smokers have a temperature of 70 to 80 degrees F. They are used for things like cheese, nuts, bacon, ham. Meats for a cold smoker have to be cured first. Often the fire box will be completely separate from the cold smoker to give the smoke time to cool down and cold smoking is done during cooler times of the year to keep the temperature down. |

Answer: | Well it's a 250 watt element. So for 24 hours that's 6 kilowatt hours(kWh). So look on your electric bill for your kWh pricing. Multiply your kWh price by 6 and you've got the answer. For instance if your electric costs $0.12/kWh then it would be $0.72 to run the unit for 24 hours. Hope this helps! |

Answer: | I wouldn’t use it for grilling since there’s no direct flame. Baking... in a smoker... it can operate at 350 degrees but that’s based on a wood fire. I would imagine some of that wood smoke flavor would be absorbed by whatever you were baking so I would not think of using it that way. It’s primary function is to smoke meats, I would stick with that. Mine sits right next to my grill so if I want to Have a Smokey flavor to my steaks, I can easily move between the two. I’ve even smoked a scallop or two... |
