User questions & answers
Question: | Does this come with a sheath or some sort of cover for the blade |
Answer: | I am unable to determine a country of origin. Husqvarna itself is Swedish. |
Question: | Is the handle hollow |
Answer: | There are 2 small axes that will meet your expectations: the 13" and 15" models. They both share the 1 pound head (AFAIK) but you may find the longer 15" handle better at producing a stronger blow. I have the 20" carpenter's axe and it comes with a wide edge and a rather heavy 2 pound head. |
Question: | Is the axe blade ready to chop wood or does it need to be sharpened prior to first use |
Answer: | This is an ax not a hatchet. There is neither ax nor hatchet that don’t have to be sharpened after use. |
Question: | Where is this product manufactured? Does not say made with Swedish Steel like the wood handled versions |
Answer: | Husqvarna, the chainsaw company outsource their axes and just stamp the handle. They used to be made by Wetterlings and now are being made by Hultafors Burks, both excellent manufactures. Hultafors Burks has been making axes in Sweden since 1697. Not really a brand known in the US because they have been lacking a distributor but that has changed as of recently. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does the handle have a coating or varnish on it? Or is it just finished with linseed oil or barewood |
Answer: | Mine came with a high quality sanded finish. No coating. YMMV though, as I've seen conflicting reviews on some details like how sharp the axe was when shipped. The quality of the axe overall seems to be consistent: high quality steel, high quality hickory handle. Just minor variations in some of the details. Personally I wouldn't consider any of them deal breakers considering the price. |
Question: | where can I get a sheathe for this |
Answer: | Look for the "Helko" hatchet sheath with 12 inch strap (I think) the shorter one (I think they have a "hatchet" sheath with 12 and 16 inch strap..) do not get the premium sheath, mine came with oil for the leather and in 5 minutes my normal (not premium) sheath looked AWSOME and was just as good for a few bucks less. The helko hatchet sheath fit like a glove , has two buckle holes left, and looks very nice. |
Question: | are grains orientated correctly on the handles?are they bi-colored like the one shown? can you get one had picked or is it just luck of the draw |
Answer: | I think it is luck of the draw. The one I received had poor grain orientation so I am deciding whether to return it or keep it and replace the handle when/if it breaks. The Marbles Camp Axe is a SMKW brand but they were not yet able to find a replacement handle for me when I spoke to them. I called Condor (the maker in El Salvador) but the last known phone number was changed. The axe head appears to be of very good quality and it is well put together except for the wood grain. The handle is unusual as it is very thick near the head and then diminishes in circumference and is quite skinny which might be fine with gloves. Ed |
Question: | where was it made |
Answer: | These marble axes are made in El Salvador |
- This axe head is hand-forged and made from Swedish axe steel in a foundry that has been in operation since 1697.
- As part of the production process, the steel is struck multiple times thereby increasing its density and resulting in more durability of the axe.
- The head is constructed in such a way that there is a tempered zone designed to hold a very sharp edge even after many sharpenings.
- Each axe comes with a traditional leather protective sheath that is embellished with some unique Swedish decorative elements. The axe is shipped in its own storage box and comes with a detailed users manual.

Question: | Can you tell me more about this axe? who made them? when were they made? who found them? where was the warehouse? entire history please |
Answer: | Different hatchet but very similar. |
Question: | Does this come with a sheath or blade guard |
Answer: | "Bruks" is Swedish for forge. Hults and Granfors are two different forges, both located in Sweden, both high quality. Supposedly Granfors are more expensive because of a higher level of finish. |
Question: | The description says the cutting edge is 3.25 inches but what is the measuremetn from edge tip to edge tip in a straight line |
Answer: | Per the item description here on Amazon 11/01/20, Tarnaby hatchet handle is 15" in length. True Value hardware sells the same hatchet and their description corroborates this as well. |
Question: | Is it good for throwing at targets |
Answer: | The axe head is made in Sweden. Not sure who makes the handles. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Steel type |
Answer: | Did some digging for you. Best info I could find is: It's made from Forged carbon steel, HRC 50-56. Hope that helps. |
Question: | how do you sharpen it |
Answer: | Use a 4" grinder with a very fine flap wheel, and sharpen the blade WITH the slope of the head - not against. Use a diamond hone to finish it. |
Question: | On the description it says country of origin:China. On the website: Made in Finland. What's the deal |
Answer: | That's what I'm trying to figure out too. The fiskars website no longer says made in Finland. Just designed in Finland. And "Made in Finland" doesn't seem to be molded into the top of the handle on the axe head anymore. My 9 inch Gerber only says "Finland" on the head but it does say "Made in Finland" on the card it came attached to. I paid extra for that Gerber because I was able to ascertain that it really was made in Finland. I'm not have as much luck with this 14 inch. Too bad they don't include images of the card stock, box, whatever so a person can know beforehand. Usually I assume that when Country of Origin is not included it's because they're not very proud of what they've did. So I assume it's likely manufactured in China. I have some Svea 123 backpacking stoves. The old ones are stamped "Made in Sweden" and they really are. The new ones are simply stamped "Sweden" which isn't really a lie since the company is based there. You'd be surprised how many people see "Sweden" stamped on the stove base and take it to mean it was made in Sweden. My fear is that is what's happening here. People see "Finland" stamped on the axe head and read "Made in Finland" into it. Then again, maybe Fiskars doesn't play that game? BTW, I'm not saying it's not a good hatchet if it's made in China. But I suspect the odds go down unless Fiskars has a heavy presence at the factory, to insure quality control. |
