User questions & answers
Question: | Do I need to have a Honeywell gateway? This is an additional piece of hardware used by some of the Honeywell thermostats (ex. Prestige |
Answer: | This Thermostat truly Rocks!! - It has a screen lock as well as Security codes for front panel access. It also has security if you want to use WiFi to remotely access it. Setup is a breeze also. I HIGHLY recommend this thermostat. The NEST is an excellent choice as well. |
Question: | Without battery backup, what happens in a power outage? Is there internal memory that keeps the settings and how long, and is thermostat still usable |
Answer: | What's Google home? |
Question: | What happens to the room temperature when the internet is down |
Answer: | I have a 5 year old Lux Thermostat. When we bought a new Rheem this past summer, the technician pulled the batteries out of it saying they were not needed. End result, is every time we have a power outage, the thermostat looses it's programming. it losses it when we change back and forth from heat to cool also. I'd be wary of any advice about removing batteries unless you're sure that it does not affect the thermostat memory. i say this as the A/C is on and it's program is set on 72 degrees. i had it set on 75 and have not attempted to reprogram it since that would be just a temporary fix it resets down to 72 often not sure why. |
Question: | How do I figure out if this will work with my wiring? I read that there might be issues with the electric wires (might be missing one COMMON wire |
Answer: | I just went to Best Buy to play with the RTH9585WF and see what is the difference in the settings. Color options do seem to be slightly different. Both have 7 day programing (four settings per day) plus vacation etc. The literature says the 9585 automatically switches between cool/heat but in 9585 system (MODE) there is only "heat", "cool" and "off". So my guess is the automatic is not a setting you pick. 9560 offers the forth option of automatic and will show heat and cool adjustments on the home page setting on the panel. Other than that I do not see any difference. My guess is the 9585 has a newer chip set but honestly I have no idea. I called Honeywell and the tech could not even tell me the difference other than it's the second generation model. Both work with Alexa and other smart devices and smart hubs. I'm still thinking of returning the 9580 for the 9585 but if I have to switch between heat and cold that is a deal breaker and I kind of like seeing the date when I walk buy. My guess is in a few years Honeywell will over a unit to compete with the Ecobee with something like Alexa built into it. Frankly, I'd purchase the Ecobeen 4 but my wife of 35 years thought the Ecobeen being black and kind of large and the white mounting plate was ugly and after 35 years of marriage I felt like this decision was not worth the fight. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you program just the fan mode |
Answer: | Hi there, this unit REQUIRES an internet connection, based on a WiFi (wireless) connection. Once the device establishes an internet connection to the Honeywell cloud (which is cool!) you can effectively control the thermoostat from anywhere you have an internet connection.... even your smartphone. Enjoy! |
Question: | Is it smart enough to decide whether to run the heater or cooler to keep the temperature fixed |
Answer: | The WiFi setup requires you to create an account on mytotalconnectcomfort.com. It’s not that hard. The biggest problem with this thermostat is the unreliable remote connectivity ever since Honeywell spun off their thermostat division 6 months ago. Now it’s frequent periods of time where the thermostat will not respond to remote commands. It’s maddening |
Question: | What if i have a C wire |
Answer: | When you put it on circulate, the fan comes on for about 10 minutes every 20 minutes or so. The owners manual says it runs about 35% of the time. I used this feature this Fall with the system off (no heat or a/c) just to circulate the air through my Filtrete filters. |
Question: | Can you create a fan schedule? I’d like the fan to always run from 10pm until 6am |
Answer: | These thermostats are not the same. Even the screen is different. The RTH9580 doesn't have the 3D look of the 9300 series. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Canyou control this over the internet or do you need to have a wifi conmection |
Answer: | I had to use the App to setup wifi connection. I control it on my phone and directly at the T-stat. Did not see a Web site as an option. |
Question: | Is the wifi connection for remote access really trouble as it sounds |
Answer: | no |
Question: | How does the Air Circulate option work? Can it turn on the fan automatically every hour when the heat/cool is not on |
Answer: | Return it, this system does not work right. 👎🏻 |
Question: | What's the difference between this thermostat and the RTH |
Answer: | Nisiquiera se puede establecer una conexión con el wifi, yo no lo compraría |
- 【Temperature Sensor】 Ambient temperature is detected automatically by the high-precision temperature sensor on the receiver socket. When current temperature reach to preset temperature, the thermostat plug stop heating or cooling, so you can place it where you want to measure the temperature to stay comfortable.
- 【Wireless Remote Control】 Remote setup and control, portable design for more convenient and handy. The control distance of the wireless thermostat reaches 66ft in the open area, allowing you to control heating or cooling equipment more flexibility.
- 【Easy to Use】 No installation or wiring needed, just plug and play, plug your portable heating or cooling unit into the thermostat outlet, and you're ready to go. Comes with LCD display, supports reading in Celsius or Fahrenheit units.
- 【Multiple Safety Production】 The casing of the plug-in thermostat is made of flame retardant PC material, 3-Prong socket with grounded terminal, max load current up to 15A, over high and low-temperature and sensor failure alarms make it safe and reliable.
- 【Wide Applications】 The smart outlet thermostat is widely used for space heater, portable heater, wall panel heater, oil-filled radiator, electric fireplace heater, evaporative cooler, swamp cooler, attic fan, window air conditioner, etc.
User questions & answers
Question: | What is the maximum wattage for a heater plugged into the outlet that won't burn out the thermostat |
Answer: | The control module connects to the Furnace/AC Air Handler in the same way as your existing thermostat does. In my case, it's mounted in the same closet as the unit. The thermostat itself can then be mounted anywhere in the house. |
Question: | Will this work with a forced air kerosene heater |
Answer: | No it does not, mine is connected to unit in the attic and thermostat is kept in master bedroom one level below through walls. Works great! |
Question: | Is the device default to Celsius |
Answer: | I put my unit s about 15 feet apart. Moved the thermostat down hall away from furnace. Seem to do a better job keeping whole house evenly warm. |
Question: | Will this work on a space heater that already has a thermostat??? Or do I need to buy a heater without a thermostat??? Thanks |
Answer: | It will not work. Mitsubishi uses a thermistor on the indoor unit. That sense the air temperature |
Question: | Does the base unit require a "c" wire connection? i only have 4 wires: r, g, y, w for a 1 stage heat, 1 stage cooling system |
Answer: | If the battery powered thermostat fails and the system is stuck in the "on" position the system could continue heating for an extended period of time and potentially cause a dangerous situation. To avoid this, the return sensor is a temperature sensor placed in the air intake duct (drill a hole and push it through). The main control unit (with the red label on it) is usually located in your utility closet and wired with a short 6' HVAC wire directly to the HVAC system (no need to go through any walls - very easy to wire). The main intake duct usually enters the bottom of the HVAC system in the utilities closet - this is where you drill the hole for the sensor and run a short wire over to the control unit. If the thermostat does fail, and the system is stuck in an on position when the temperature goes outside the normally acceptable range per the return sensor the system will shut off. |
Question: | Does the control module connect to the furnace |
Answer: | I agree with the other two suggestions. Please note that Honeywell will not answer questions to home owners. I had a problem getting the "remote" thermostat to "see" the wireless signal. The "Thermostat" and "Control module" worked perfectly but the supplemental remote controller was never able to connect. I called Honeywell and the tech told me that this unit was supposed to be installed by a professional. He told me that a professional could call the tech department and they would talk to him but not to a homeowner. I returned the remote and just carry the thermostat from room to room which works just fine. Honeywell will not help you but I suspect that if you move the control module to a more central location it will probably solve your problem with minimal cost. |
Question: | Does the wireless connection require a direct, "line of site" method or will it work around corner |
Answer: | Each system is different. I have the same colors as you, green, white and red for my A/C and white and red for my heater. I didn't have a black wire. I think your right, black is common. |
Question: | What is maximum range distance wise, how many feet |
Answer: | Keep the button depressed until the light stays solid. Then you'll be able to choose your setting. |
Question: | Will this work with Mitsubishi split-type A/C units |
Answer: | I use a thick fleece pad on top of the warmer and the heat penetrates through it well, even on the lower settings. |
Question: | Since the system auto-connects after a power outage, what is the point of the return air sensor? I don't know how or whether to install it |
Answer: | It stays on for the hour duration you choose. |
Question: | We are having a problem with the range. We have an old house with VERY think walls. The thermostat will not connect from the 2nd floor to the base unit in the basement (but will connect from the 1st floor). Is there a range extender available? Or any suggestions regarding how to extend the signal to the 2nd floor |
Answer: | I keep a few layers of sheets above it. Never touches my clients. Lysol spray it once daily. |
Question: | I have red, green, white, and yellow wires. No black. I am assuming black is "common" wire and thus I can not use this thermostat, correct |
Answer: | Most table warmers state not to put them under quilts or heavy sheets due to potential of a fire hazard. This item also has to be stretched onto the table and it fits really tight and it’ll look like you had your table reupholstered and I don’t think a table warmer would fit under it even if it wasn’t a fire hazard to do so |

About Honeywell
Honeywell's roots reach to 1885, when an inventor named Albert Butz patented the furnace regulator and alarm. He formed the Butz Thermo-Electric Regulator Co., Minneapolis, in April, 1886, and soon invented a device he called the 'damper flapper' – an ingenious predecessor to the modern thermostat.
Here's how it worked. When a room cooled below a predetermined temperature, a thermostat closed the circuit and energized an armature. This pulled the stop from the motor gears, allowing a crank attached to the main motor shaft to turn one-half revolution. A chain connected to the crank opened the furnace's air damper to let in air. This made the fire burn hotter. When the temperature rose to the preset level, the thermostat signaled the motor to turn another half revolution, closing the damper and damping the fire. The temperature correction was automatic. Over the years, many Honeywell products have been based upon similar, but more complicated closed-loop systems.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is there a wired version for baseboard heaters |
Answer: | On the back of the package, it states: "Maximum rating: 1800 Watts, 15 Amps, 120V AC. To be used with GFCI outlets." Since our heaters were placed in a pump house (for well water), with went with standard outlets, but the GFCI would be safer. Hope this helps. |
Question: | How do you turn off the blinking green light on the remote |
Answer: | I put my unit on an extension cord and put it in my freezer to test it it worked just fine. The temperature is what makes it go on and off.I hope this helps you. |
Question: | does the thermostat read the temperature from the outlet or the remote |
Answer: | These types of devices are close enough for the use they are intended for. The industry that makes bi-metal switches (the lower cost approach) has been around for a long time, if that is what it uses (being the older technology). Bi-metal 120vac switches are usually accurate to plus or minus 1F and usually have a 10 degree spread (on to off/off to on). Digital controls are much more accurate (I didn't tear on apart yet). But, this unit is intended for controlling a heater to keeping a bird bath from freezing or a water pipe that is exposed to low temperatures, etc. This type of control is not suitable for growing a culture in an incubating dish (a job where exactly is important). You also wouldn't' want to use it for keeping your gutters and down spouts from freezing because my experience is that a control to do that job should come on around 35F and off at 25F. |
Question: | Can i use this device to control an ac minisplit |
Answer: | A 1-foot extension cord would get the cube clear of the covered outlet. $2. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Heat Pump Aux Heat Control: Using an outdoor redlink sensor, can the TS be setup to lockout electric strip heat when outdoor temp is above setpoint |
Answer: | Yes. you can configure Aux heat lockout and Compressor lockout both using outdoor temp sensor. |
Question: | Does this use Z-wave technology |
Answer: | No it isn't. You need the Honeywell ZWstat for z-wave. Here is a link, http://www.amazon.com/HONEYWELL-ZWSTAT-ZWAVE-THERMOSTAT/dp/B006LO78OA |
Question: | Just to verify, since i have this thermostat and eim, do i just need the redlink gateway to connect to my wifi |
Answer: | With just that thermostat and EIM, you would just need the gateway. If you have a zoning panel (HZ432) with multiple zones and multiple wireless thermostats, you would need the Zoning panel, EIM (control the main thermostat + connect to HVAC equipment) , RedLink wireless adaptor + wireless thermostats (to control each zone), and the gateway. |
