Question:	Can use for surveillance and photo birds, animals
Answer:	The lens is completely manual. Unlike any auto focus lens you might have this lens does not interact with the camera. Attach the lens turn on the camera, turn the mode dial to M and take a picture. It won't be in focus and the exposure will be wrong but it will show that it takes a picture. You will need to to turn the focus ring to get a clear picture. You will need to change the aperture by turning the ring, changing shutter speed, or the ISO - sometimes all 3! The camera does nothing for you. Google 'Sunny 16' to get some guidance on where to start with setting the exposure. I brought this lens for a trip to the Smoky Mountains - wanted a long lens but didn't want to spend big dollars. I practiced before the trip. Got a couple of cute pictures of bear cubs playing and elk that I would have never gotten with my 200 mm. I takes some work but you will learn from the experience if you never shot manual before. You will need to use a tripod or rest the lens on something solid to avoid blur except in bright light with a very, very fast shutter. Good Luck, have patience and stick with it!

Question:	Why is there such a big price difference in this lens? Some are $696 some $999 and in between. What gives
Answer:	The more expensive lens is about 10 ounces heavier (!), and inch longer and has a wider diameter which you will see if you pull up the specs side by side on nikonusa.com. There are a few other differences like more diaphragm blades and a smaller minimum aperture. I am mostly happy with the less expensive model, but you might want to check out the Nikon P900 if you are shopping for a new camera and don't absolutely need a dslr.

Answer:	Cheaper and lighter, but slower at the long end of the zoom when compared to the older Nikon 18-300. Lighter than my old Nikon 18-200 VR. A well worthwhile upgrade, for me that is.

Answer:	Short answer yes. Long answer: It's a zoom lens, wide angle and telephoto all in one. Also has a crop factor. For example, Nikon’s “DX” cameras have a crop factor of 1.5x, so if you take a 18mm wide angle lens and multiply it by this number, the result is 27mm. This basically means that the 18mm lens on the crop sensor DX camera would behave more like a 27mm lens on a full-frame camera in terms of field of view. Likewise the 140mm is really a 210mm.

My lens was bubble wrapped, in a well fitted plastic bag. Without the card from Nikon, my gut would be thinking used, or almost even worse, gray market... Nikon USA will not even touch a GM product. Answer:	Yes, it will. The D7000 has a focus feeler that allows it to focus older "AF" lenses. I have an old AF 28-105 and autofocus works flawlessly.

Answer:	It will work, and all in all work as well as most manual focus lenses, better than some, since the d40x will meter correctly. It will however NOT autofocus. If manual focusing is your cup of tea, have at it, as the focal length will be fine for portraits and it is affordable.

Answer:	The D5100 only autofocuses with the latest AF-S lens, and also older professional AF-I lens. Briefly, AF-S lens have a built-in motor to drive the focusing mechanisms on the lens, whereas AF lens rely on the motor in the camera body (like the D90 or the D7000). Most traditional screw-drive AF lenses will not autofocus on the D5100, but will autofocus on the D90/D7000. Lens that say "AF-S," will autofocus with the d5100, and most lenses sold today for the D5100 are AF-S. The D5100 has no internal autofocus motor, so it will not autofocus with original-style screw-drive AF lenses. This is why some lens will autofocus with the D5100, and some won't.

The AF-S Nikkor 35mm F1.8G DX is a lens which certainly caused a degree of dismay on its release, with many Nikon fans disappointed by the decision to make it compatible with the DX format only. However the main benefit of that decision is plain for all to see - even at its introductory price the lens costs rather less than the venerable AF-Nikkor 35mm F2.0D, despite the addition of an AF-S motor to allow autofocusing on Nikon's entry-level D40 / D40X / D60 bodies. It's also less than half the price of the few other DX format standard primes currently on the market (such as the Pentax 35mm F2.8 Macro, Tokina 35mm F2.8 Macro and Sigma 30mm F1.4 EX DC HSM), so Nikon has managed with this lens to produce the first genuinely inexpensive (sub-$200) fast standard prime designed specifically for digital SLRs.



Within this context, the lens's performance is very impressive. It produces finely detailed images at all apertures (although with somewhat low contrast wide open), focuses quickly and accurately, and handles well in a small, light package. In particular, it's much sharper than typical DX standard zooms such as the Nikon AF-S 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 DX VR or Nikon AF-S 18-200mm F3.5-5.6 DX VR. The fast maximum aperture allows pictures to be taken hand-held in low light levels, while maintaining relatively fast shutter speeds to avoid blur from subject motion (a key advantage over image-stabilised, but slow, kit zooms when photographing people without flash indoors). The slightly less tangible aspects of image quality - such as resistance to flare, and the rendition of out-of-focus regions of the frame - are also dealt with nicely.



If the lens has one major flaw, it is a certain propensity to show chromatic aberration, of both the lateral kind (which can be corrected by the in-camera JPEG processing of the D90 and D300), and the longitudinal (which cannot). To be fair the latter is a pretty well unavoidable with a fast prime, but the 35mm F1.8G DX suffers from it to a rather high degree, and in particular can give some unpleasant purple fringing effects if you're not careful.



Overall, though, it seems almost churlish to complain about these flaws in a lens so inexpensive, which gives otherwise such fine results. It's good to see Nikon finally addressing the lack of purpose-designed, inexpensive fast primes for DX format DSLRs, and we hope they - and other companies - continue with this trend. As it is the 35mm F1.8G DX is, for its winning combination of high image quality, large maximum aperture and low price, a lens which deserves to be on many a Nikon shooter's shopping list.

You will see on the display to the left it will open and close as you move the dial. It is a lot of trial and error. There is also great how to's on line.

Answer:	This lens uses a 62 mm diameter filter and requires a "circular polarizer" which is different from the ones used for film cameras.

Answer:	Yes, you can. Technically you can take a portrait with any lens. Normally you want a focal length greater than 50mm so that you don't get distortion. This lens is not sharp and you can't crop the picture so make sure that you frame the person as you want. The bokeh is not really good, but this isn't a quality lens to begin with. I recommended that people either buy the Canon 55-250 or save up for an L quality (if you are a Canon shooter). I found that the quality of pics with this lens to be useless - maybe a 5% keeper rate. Good luck with whatever your decide.

Answer:	Hello Michael! I have one and it works very good. You'll be able to take coins with no issues. The glass has been working fine with me for more that 2 years. However, have a look to the extension tubes perhaps is easier and cheaper to you to add an extension to your 50mm and take closer pictures to your coins. The other option is the Tamron 90mm, that is real 1:1 (I own it and it is much better than this 70-300, but more expensive) Finally, you could choose the "Magnification glass", that is good and cheap (Not as good as a macro, but very good in general) I hope this helps to you!

Answer:	Yes this FX lens will work on any modern Nikon DX camera but it's not as simple as the answers I see provided. Yes the Lens effectively becomes a 350-750mm lens and for wildlife that is great but what you are not hearing about is that the effective aperture also goes up proportionately from 5.6 to a higher number. That decreases your depth of field. Second problem is that most people think the image will be sharper because your "using the center of the glass". This increased sharpness myth has been debunked and is not true! If you had a true DX lens of roughly the same quality and in the same focal range you would get a sharper picture from it on a DX camera. All I am saying is that your paying a lot of money for high a high quality lens that will not work as well as a true DX lens that would cost 1/3 the price. If you are sure that at some future date you will be moving to an FX camera then it's worth it, if not I suggest you do some reading and confirm what I am saying is true. There is an excellent video by Tony Northrup that explains and photographically demonstrates the gains and loses of using an FX lens on a DX camera.
