User questions & answers
Question: | What kinds of things are on the slides |
Answer: | 20 slides |
Question: | How many slides are there |
Answer: | You could do so but may have to hold them in place and the voice keeps going on to place a slide in place. The slides which come with the unit are designed to fit, click into, the holder section allowing the unit to determine what slide you are looking at. This unit only has a weak 5x power with no option to focus. Looking at other slides might work but I believe it would be unimpressive. |
Question: | Can other slides be used with this microscope |
Answer: | Yes, I have a 4 yr old.. There are only so many slides and it gets old real quick. |
Question: | Would this be too young for a 7 year old |
Answer: | Hello,This Microscope is made of a hard plastic, making it lighter and very portable. Thank you for your inquiry,National Geographic Toys Customer Support |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the microscope made of? Hard plastic or metal |
Answer: | Hello Leonard,This microscope is not meant for seeing cells. It's magnifications goes up to 50X. To see cells well you would need approximately 400X. This microscope comes with sea monkeys (also known for brine shrimp), and is great for watching them swim around! It is also good to explore and see pixilation in magazines or other pictures, exploring bugs, and the many slides that come with the product!Thank you for your inquiry. |
Question: | Is this microscope able to observe cells |
Answer: | The objective lens on this microscope is 2x and the ocular lenses are 10x and 25x. This combination will magnify your specimen either 20x or 50x. |
Question: | If it has a 20x objective and a 50x objective wouldn't that give you 200x and 500x magnification? Or is the microscope lens itself just a 2x & not 10x |
Answer: | Hello,The eye pieces are adjustable and should adjust to fit children or adults.Thank you for your inquiry,National Geographic Toys Customer Support |
Question: | Are the eye pieces adjustable to adapt to different widths of eyes between, e.g., children and adults |
Answer: | The end that fits into the holes of the hedgehog are 1/2 inch while the other end is between 3/4" and 1". I would say they are similar to the size of a man's fingers since I have an average woman's hand and the thickness of the quills is bigger than my fingers. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the adapter here www.amazon.com/Carson®-MicroMax-Microscope-Adapter-MM-255/dp/B00BHW8J62/ for this model to use on my Samsung Duos GT |
Answer: | Hi Amber,Please note that the MicroBrite Plus Pocket Microscope (MM-300) is not compatible with any smartphones. The added image is just to show some different related Carson products like other pocket microscopes as well as products that can be used for digiscoping purposes. We apologize for any confusion. |
Question: | What exactly makes this item compatable with an iPhone or Galaxy |
Answer: | Yes. There is a button that activates the LED light that will stay on continuously until you press it again to turn it off. |
Question: | Does this have a light that stays on (one where you don't have to keep the button pressed down to keep the light on |
Answer: | The four main species of dust mites range in size from .008 inch long to .012 inch long. Therefore, at this microscope's lowest power (60X), the smallest of these dust mites would appear as if it was nearly 1" long to the naked eye; and at 120X, the largest species would appear as if it was about 1.4" long to the naked eye. As you can see, the MM-300 is not just adequate for this purpose, it's perfect. |
Question: | Can it be used to see dust mites and other insects not viewable with your eye |
Answer: | This Anatomy Lab skull is intended for beginners and basic study, so instead, we would recommend the Axis Scientific 3-Part Skull that includes all these details: https://www.amazon.com/Axis-Scientific-Interior-Structures-Detailed/dp/B00KZO8R56 |
Product features
For Best Results:
- Place the base of the microscope flush against a flat viewing surface
- Ensure the LED lighting is switched on
- Start focusing on the lowest magnification setting (60x)
- Once you have a clear view of your subject, increase the magnification to your desired level (you may need to slightly adjust the focus again slightly)
A note on using the MicroBrite Plus in the field: Due to high magnification, the focal distance of the MicroBrite Plus is very short (maximum of 2mm past the acrylic base). It is not possible to focus on subjects beyond this focal distance. Looking at larger, three dimensional objects or objects that are not on a flat surface takes practice and a steady hand, especially since small movements are exaggerated with higher magnification. This is why we recommend viewing flatter objects on a flat surface, especially when first using this microscope.

User questions & answers
Question: | can you put other things under the microscope that are not included in the box or suggested |
Answer: | Yup!!! The 990v4 is not discontinued in all ages and the new 990v5 is out. This transition happened in April 2019 through June. The new version is AMAZING but built on the same last as before. Overall there really shouldn't be much of a change in the ride with the main updates happening to the upper. The plastic shank on the bottom changed just a touch but I've sold thousands this year and very, very few people said they noticed a difference. Thanks for asking and always feel free to reach out to your shoe dogs at Chiappetta Shoes! Ciao Ciao ~ Tony chips Chiappetta Chiappetta Shoes - Kenosha, Wis. |
Question: | Does light turn off by itself if left on |
Answer: | W equates to a 2E width and the XW equates to a 4E width. Thanks for asking! Feel free to shoot us a call or email anytime you've got shoe questions! Ciao Ciao ~ Tony chips Chiappetta Chiappetta Shoes, Kenosha, Wis. |
Question: | Can you purchase additional slides or are other slides compatible |
Answer: | According to the New Balance website, the V5's have "...new Ortholite® cushioning insert and supportive midsole." I currently own a pair of V5's and V4's. Each pair has a cushioning insert. The V5 inserts are branded "Ortholite." The V4 inserts are branded with " New Balance 990." The insert on the V4 has some small vent holes; the V5 insert does not have the vent holes. I can't visually see any other structural difference in the shoes. For me, the V5's feel like they fit the contour of my feet slightly better, and have slightly more firm, but responsive cushion. That could be due to the V5's being new. My feet just feel more comfortable using the V5's over the V4's, and the V4's feel pretty good. But, other users may have different experiences. If you buy the V5's and they don't work out for you, Amazon has a great and fast return policy. I don't work for Amazon or New Balance. |
Question: | How sturdy is the construction of this microscope? Are moving parts durable enough for the hands of a 7yo not so concerned about device construction |
Answer: | This is for weights, not volume. The pans/buckets are about a pint each. I am not using this in school, but rather in my kitchen as a diet scale. It serves EXCELENTLY for precise weight of small quantities. |

Question: | can you purchase an attachment to allow viewing on a computer? Or is there another model that will allow this |
Answer: | This is the Amazon listing of the attachment from the same manufacturer:https://www.amazon.com/AmScope-Microscope-Digital-Compatible-Windows/dp/B00AMOEFPA/ref=pd_sim_328_3?ie=UTF8&dpID=51CRhFtEzEL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_&psc=1&refRID=TZT2NCYDXS60872BDWQB |
Question: | Does it come with everything shown in the first pic |
Answer: | NO...missing, but as described in box 1. Users manual 2. World of Microscope Book WILL BE RETURNING, As upper descriptions with pictures DO NOT match what I thought I was ordering. Ex: pic shows colored wheel (nope).. There is NO model # anywhere on the scope, as they have MANY models, looking exact same, but with varying assets. And...upper description reads, 2 boxes of 5 each prepared slides with...(nope just 1 box). |
Question: | How are the views with this microscope? Are they crystal clear |
Answer: | The views are very very clear and the microscope is sturdy enough that there is no shifting or blurring while you view, even when multiple children pass it around. It is 100% better than the $40-60+ microscopes at toy stores. |
Question: | Can you use for wet plankton |
Answer: | Yes. The kit included a small dish about the diameter of a quarter that could hold plankton. There are also materials for making your own slides. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can anyone compare this to the Learning Resources Primary Science Viewscope? I'm looking for my 3 yr old |
Answer: | I bought the Educational Insights My First Microscope for my inquisitive 3 yr old grandson as a Christmas gift. It was a big hit. It was colorful and very user friendly. One feature I appreciated was the large area for viewing which would accommodate larger objects. In comparing the one you mentioned to this one, I noticed that the Learning Resources has a 20x magnification while this one only has 8x. Also, the Learning resources one has a removable viewer, which is a nice feature. This one costs $14.99 and is made in the USA which was a plus for me. I hope this info helps you made a more informed decision based on your preferences. |
Question: | What is the magnification on this microscope? (10x? 20x |
Answer: | It is 8x. A plastic lens, not the best but it won't break if a child drops the scope. This is made for preschoolers, after all. It works fine on small 3-D items...food, small toys, bugs, leaves, flowers, a book or picture, etc. The 8x enlarges a child's finger enough so the print lines are easy to see. The binocular view is very easy for little ones to use. Very few 3 - 6 year olds can use one eye effectively. The next step up in youth microscopes is a monocular one with a 10x to 40x magnification, I think. |
Question: | Can you tell me what kind of detail you can see with the 8 time magnification? Wondering if it's enough for 4 year old |
Answer: | This microscope is perfect for a 4-year old. Children can put all sorts of items under the microscope and see interesting details. Ask your child to look at a toy, the tip of a pen or pencil and the detail on a rock and a leaf. Look at the back of a penny (dated between 1959-2008) and challenge your 4-year old to find Lincoln sitting inside the Memorial! We chose to give this microscope 8x magnification for a very good reason: the relatively low magnification is particularly good for preschool/early elementary school age children because it gives a wide field of view which is easier for a young child to understand. Another important age-appropriate feature is that the two-eye viewing is especially good for this age group. |
Question: | Is this significantly different than getting your child a magnifying glass |
Answer: | This item is designed to give kids a feel for what a microscope does. It's a little more powerful than most children's magnifying glasses. It also gives children the experience of focusing with focusing knobs. Further, it has a light for helping to illuminate details. This is a great way to begin talking to young children about the fact that things exist that you cannot ordinarily see and that tools like a microscope allow people to view small items and details. |

User questions & answers
Question: | can we watch bacteria on hands with this |
Answer: | No, the Celestron Kids Let Your Child Explore the World Microscope does not have enough magnification to watch bacteria on hands. |
Question: | Would a 5 year old enjoy using it? Would a lower magnification level (e.g., 30x to 60x) be better for a 5 year old |
Answer: | For a 5 yo I would go with a lower power. Young kids like a "big picture" view vs a small magnified view. This will only magnify a very small area and you have to move it around. I use it to examine a knife edge polish when using Japanese water stones for sharpening my Japanese kitchen knives. 10-20x would probably be better for you. Hope this helps. |
Question: | Age range |
Answer: | The World Microscope can be used below 14 years of age with adult supervision. |
Question: | Does this work with slides |
Answer: | I believe it could work fine with slides by simply placing the base on one end of the slide, but it doesn't have a mount specifically designed to hold slides such as more expensive units do. On the other hand you can put this in your pocket and enjoy it anywhere while your expensive one is sitting at home on the bench! |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is it made of |
Answer: | It’s just the usual box , no case. |
Question: | It says it comes with a box. Is this a case for it? It doesn't say anything more in the description |
Answer: | Yes you can. I used it for my college level microbiology class and it was just fine. It will work for all science classes. No need to buy a fancy one. I mean, it is really a cheap microscope, but it will do the job. |
Question: | Can you use it to see bacteria |
Answer: | Anything past 400X can see sperm |
Question: | Can I see sperm with this microscope? Asking for a friend |
Answer: | I have a microscope with 2.5, 4, 10, 20 and 40 oil. My daughter rarely uses anythingover the 10. Mostly the 4 and 10. you can check out any local university surplus. they sometimes have amazing quality microscopes for pretty cheap. otherwise, likely any microscope would do. I would get one with an internal light source rather than the reflector. |
