| Answer: | Well, you could use a generator to charge the batteries on your boat, so long as the generator has enough wattage to power the charger's required 900 watts, add ~10% headroom for that, so you should have at least a 1000W generator. I personally would not try recharging the batteries while operating the trolling motor though. The charger sends voltage as high as 14.5V to the batteries as it charges, which goes straight to the trolling motor and could damage the electronics inside. Also, the charger will see the load from your trolling motor and try to compensate, thinking the batteries are more discharged than they really are. This can lead to cooking the batteries on your boat. Honestly, if you aren't getting enough run time from your batteries, you should think about getting larger capacity batteries rather than trying to jury-rig your boat. 2 AGM 100A batteries on my boat runs my Terrova 24V 80lb motor almost non-stop for 7-8 hours, and yes, I have 2 100A AGM batteries (and one group 24 starter battery for the rest of the boat) for the trolling motor. |
