12 best tool rests for wood lathes

Tool rests are essential accessories for wood lathes and play a crucial role in woodworking. They provide support and stability for the cutting tools and workpieces as they are being turned on the lathe. Here's what you need to know about tool rests for wood lathes:

  1. Function: Tool rests are designed to support the cutting tools used in woodturning, such as chisels and gouges. They help woodworkers maintain control and precision when shaping, carving, and smoothing wooden workpieces on the lathe.

  2. Types: There are several types of tool rests available for wood lathes, including:

    • Flat Tool Rest: This is the most common type and consists of a flat, horizontal bar that extends from the lathe's bed. It provides a stable platform for the cutting tool.

    • Curved Tool Rest: Some tool rests have a curved shape, which can be useful for creating specific contours or profiles in the wood.

    • S-curve Tool Rest: This type of tool rest has an "S" shape, allowing woodworkers to access hard-to-reach areas of the workpiece, such as the interior of bowls.

    • Bowl Rest: Bowl rests are designed specifically for turning bowls. They have a curved shape that matches the contour of a bowl, providing better support and control.

  3. Adjustability: Many tool rests are adjustable, allowing woodworkers to position them at various heights and angles. This adjustability is crucial for accommodating different turning projects and achieving the desired results.

  4. Construction: Tool rests are typically made of sturdy materials such as cast iron or steel to ensure durability and stability. The tool rest bar often features a hardened and polished surface to reduce friction and facilitate smooth tool movement.

  5. Length: The length of a tool rest can vary, with longer tool rests providing more support for larger workpieces and shorter ones being suitable for smaller projects.

  6. Mounting: Tool rests are attached to the lathe's bed using clamps or bolts. It's important to ensure that the tool rest is securely fastened to prevent any wobbling or movement during woodturning.

  7. Safety: Properly using a tool rest is essential for safety in woodturning. The tool rest should be positioned close to the workpiece but not so close that it causes interference or poses a risk to the operator. Woodworkers should always wear appropriate safety gear, such as safety glasses and face shields, when using a wood lathe.

Overall, tool rests are indispensable accessories for wood lathes, providing the support and stability needed to create precise and beautifully turned wooden objects. They come in various shapes and sizes to accommodate a wide range of turning projects and help woodworkers achieve their desired results.

User questions & answers

Question: Does it fits rigid w
Answer: They are the standard diameter to fit most wood lathes. Ed
Question: Why do you not make this tool rest in a 1" diameter post
Answer: I agree that this might be a good idea; however, since PSI has a clientele that primarily focuses on pen turning, a 1" post would be overkill. I actually made a 1" collar about 2" long with a below flush sets crew that I can tighten up on the tool rest. Then the tool rest with the collar attached will fit in and tighten up like it should. I know this didn't actually answer your question, but I do hope it helps!
Question: Anyone know if this fits in the HF Item#34706 wood lathe with the 33" bed
Answer: I don't know if they will fit, these are 5/8", so I would suggest you measure your current post size. Also, these are definitely not worthless. I abandoned my Jet tool rest and use only these now. I guess it's personal preference, but I like the round bars. They tend not to pit because the pressure is spread across a larger area.
Question: How long is the post
Answer: The post is just long enough for my Jet 1221VS lathe. These are kind of cheap and you would be better off to spend more money and buy the 2 piece rests.

  • Port Size: 5/8 in.

User questions & answers

Question: what size is the post
Answer: It fits my Jet 1014vs I can't seem to find the size and I am not home to measure, I want to say 5/8". It was a tight fit when I first got it so I polished up the post with varying grades of sandpaper and now it is shiny and fits perfect.
Question: Is it a 5/8" post
Answer: Yes, post is 5/8". I would not purchase this support though. I had one that fractured at the top of the post during turning and it was a miracle that I was not injured. The piece is made of cast iron and is very brittle. Any catch on the lathe while turning risks the chance of breaking just like mine did.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this item work on a Nova 1624 lathe? Which post length is appropriate
Answer: I have a Nova DVR/XP. The height from top of lathe bed to center line on my lathe is 7-7/8 inches. I ordered the "long" 9 inch J-Rest ... overall height of this long J-rest is 6-5/8" from bottom of post to top of rest, which is just right for my lathe. Here are the Robust specs on their tool rests, including the 9 inch J-rest ... http://www.thewoodturningstore.com/images/Robust_Tool_Rest_Dimensions.pdf
Question: Is there any reason this couldn't be used on the outside also
Answer: no reason whatsoever.....But TAKE NOTE ....... it will NOT fit on a "metric" banjo..............
Question: Hi, Is the post actually 1in diameter as indicated in the description or is it 5/8? When I go to the wood turning store website they indicate 5/8in
Answer: The post on mine is 1", but it is probably also available in 5/8". Fine piece of equipment BTW. Bill
Question: My grizzly g0642z stock tool rest is 6" tall....from the bottom of the 1" post to the very top of the rest. which size do i need? thanks in advance
Answer: The 9” J curve tool rest is 6 1/2” from top to bottom. When you say stock to rest are you referring to the banjo? That’s the part that holds the tool rest?

User questions & answers

Question: will this tool hold a Ci0 size cutter tip? which I believe is 0.65 x 0.3 x 0.65 inches. Will the same screw work...or is this tapped differently
Answer: We do not have a Ci0 cutter here to try on it, however I believe that cutter will be too large for this tool. We machine this tool to accept a 9/16" OD round cutter. I don't believe the Ci0 cutter will seat properly or line up with the screw hole, as it appears to be too large. Thanks!
Question: What is the diameter of the carbide cutter? Does it use the same diameter as the simple shear finisher
Answer: The diameter of the cutter on this tool is 9/16". It is not the same cutter as the Simple Shear Cutting Finisher, nor will that cutter work on this tool. The cutter for the Simple Shear Cutting Finisher needs to be presented to the work at an angle, which is why that tool has a round shaft. This tool has a square shaft and is machined to only will accept the 9/16" round flat top cutter that comes on it.
Question: Will this font in my rikon handle
Answer: This tool has a 1/2" dia x 2.5" length round handle tang. If your Rikon handle accepts 1/2" round then it should work. We are not familiar with Rikon handles so we do not know for sure.
Question: what is the shaft diameter
Answer: This tool is 1/2" square. The handle tang is 2.5" long x 1/2" round so it fits into a handle that accepts 1/2" round tang.

Product features

Using the Simple Swan Neck Hollower with a Handle (handle sold separately):

  1. Position the tool rest so the curved portion of the tool will not contact the tool rest when the tool is inside the vessel. In other words the curved portion of the tool should be hanging over the tool rest. This positions the tool rest farther away from the vessel then would be normal with other tools. The reason for this is to prevent rotational, or twisting force on the tool as would be the case if the curved portion is in contact with the tool rest. Notice the center of the cutter is inline with the center of the straight portion of the tool. If the tool is positioned properly on the tool rest it will work just like straight shaft tools with no more twisting felt in the handle then when cutting with the side of a cutter on a straight shaft tool. However, since the tool is always extended over the tool rest we recommend only light cuts be made with this tool. Also this tool is designed for the final hollowing only and should not be used for the entire hollowing process. Straight shaft tool should be used for as much of the hollowing process as possible because the tool rest can be positioned close to the work with those tools.
  2. Adjust the tool rest height so the cutter is at the lathe vertical center line.
  3. Place the tool on the tool rest with the tool shaft parallel with the floor.
  4. While securely holding the tool handle carefully move the tool into the vessel and carefully hollow out the portion that can not be reached with your straight shaft tools.

Simple Swan Neck Hollower technical details:

  • Overall tool length: 12"
  • Tool Shaft: Solid stainless steel 1/2" square
  • Handle tang: ½" diameter x 2½" length

Ready to Begin Right Away

  • Super sharp carbide cutter: 9/16 diameter - Flat top cutter
  • Multiple Sharp Edges
  • Cutter comes installed on each tool.
  • T20 Torx star tip wrench included.

Tool Engraving Simplifies Cutter Selection

Each Simple Woodturning Tool is engraved so you know exactly what tool you have. That makes finding replacement cutters very simple!

  • Authentic Simple Woodturning Tools - replacement cutter for Simple Swan Neck Hollower OR Simple Turner & Hollower (fits tools engraved with SSNH & STH)

Using the Simple Swan Neck Hollower with the Simple Hollowing System:

  1. Mount the tool in the hollowing system tool holder.
  2. Position the tool rest as close to the work as possible.*
  3. Adjust the tool rest height so the cutter is at the vertical center line of the lathe.
  4. Adjust the rear support on the hollowing system so the tool is parallel with the lathe bed. Recheck the position of the cutter to make sure it's the vertical center line of the lathe.
  5. Carefully move the tool into the vessel and hollow out the portion that can not be reached with your straight shaft tools.

*With this tool mounted in the hollowing system the curved portion of the tool can be in contact with the tool rest. Rotational forces are absorbed by the hollowing system so that's not a concern as it is when this tool is used in a handle.
