14 best undercoat paint for car

Undercoat paint for cars, also known as automotive undercoating or underbody coating, is a specialized type of paint or coating applied to the underside of a vehicle. It serves several important purposes in the context of automotive maintenance and protection:

  1. Rust Prevention: One of the primary functions of undercoat paint is to protect the vehicle's undercarriage from rust and corrosion. The underside of a car is particularly susceptible to rust due to exposure to moisture, salt, road debris, and environmental contaminants. Undercoating forms a protective barrier that helps prevent these elements from causing rust and damage.

  2. Sound Deadening: Undercoat paint can also act as a sound deadener. It reduces road noise and vibrations, making the vehicle's interior quieter and more comfortable for occupants. This is especially important in luxury cars and vehicles used for long trips.

  3. Temperature Insulation: Some undercoating materials provide a degree of thermal insulation, which can help regulate the temperature inside the vehicle. This is particularly beneficial in extreme weather conditions, as it can keep the interior cooler in hot weather and warmer in cold weather.

  4. Protection from Road Debris: Undercoat paint forms a protective layer that shields the undercarriage from rocks, gravel, and other road debris that can cause damage. It also makes it easier to clean off dirt and grime.

  5. Extended Vehicle Lifespan: By preventing rust and corrosion, undercoating can extend the lifespan of a vehicle. It helps maintain the structural integrity of the frame and components underneath the car.

  6. Types of Undercoat Paint: There are different types of undercoat paint and coatings available, including rubberized undercoating, asphalt-based undercoating, and wax-based undercoating. Each type has its specific properties and advantages. Rubberized undercoating, for example, provides a durable and flexible barrier, while asphalt-based undercoating offers excellent rust resistance.

  7. Application Process: Applying undercoat paint typically involves cleaning the undercarriage thoroughly, removing any existing rust, and then spraying or brushing on the undercoating material. It's important to ensure proper coverage and even application to achieve effective protection.

  8. Professional vs. DIY: While some car owners choose to apply undercoat paint themselves, many prefer to have it done by professionals, such as automotive service centers or body shops. Professional application ensures thorough coverage and adherence to safety standards.

  9. Maintenance: Undercoat paint may require periodic inspection and touch-up to maintain its effectiveness. Over time, it can wear down due to exposure to road conditions, so reapplication may be necessary.

In conclusion, undercoat paint for cars is a protective coating applied to the underside of a vehicle to prevent rust, reduce noise, insulate against temperature extremes, and shield against road debris. It plays a crucial role in preserving the structural integrity and longevity of a vehicle, and the choice of undercoating material should be based on the specific needs and conditions of the vehicle and its environment.

User questions & answers

Question: The 3M kit #16325 is for 28oz cups and lids, but the description on the product details says these are 3oz capacity. Are these the 28oz capacity
Answer: There are errors in the listing. The description is wrong and so is the photo. 3M 16325 is a kit of 28 oz. lids and liners (25 each) plus 10 sealing plugs. The lids will be blue for water borne paint and will have the full diameter filter embedded.
Question: Does this come with a cup & collar like usual
Answer: Thank you for your question! No, the 3M 16314 PPS Minii Size Kit with 125 Micros Filters includes; 50 lids, 50 liners, and 20 sealing plugs. You may wish to consider the 3M 16115 PPS Mini Cup and Collar. https://www.amazon.com/16115-PPS-Mini-Cup-Collar/dp/B000RHWLUI/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=B000RHWLUI&qid=1566227642&s=gateway&sr=8-1
Question: anyone had these lids leak? first i thought it was the adapter, had two lids in a row leak. went back to an old lid i had laying around...was ok
Answer: I had one leak with some very thin enamel paint, but I'm pretty sure it was user error. I didn't get the lid pushed down into the liner all the way before putting the lock ring on (lid or lock ring slightly cocked or something.) Haven't noticed any issues leaking around the lid to spray gun connection using a PPS spray gun (re-using tips a lot.) . Wonder if the box has a date / batch number? Might be worth a call to 3M for some replacements.
Question: Which is best for spraying clear cabinet finishes, 125 or 200 micron? Thanks
Answer: 125 micron is for water-borne and 200 is for solvent-based coatings. I hope this answers your question.

User questions & answers

Question: can you use on engine block
Answer: We found that the bright red becomes a light pink within a year or so. I am not sure how it would react in a high heat application like an engine block.
Question: Do I need to paint over this with the por 15 rust prevention paint or is a few coats of this stuff sufficient? going on the underside of a chevy truck
Answer: POR 15 rust prevention goes on first. Top Coat provides UV protection on exposed surfaces. I doubt you'd need it on the underside if it isn't exposed to much light.
Question: How do I apply this over por15? Can I coat this on top of por15 as additional layers(up to 4-5) or wait til the por15 sets, sand and then top coat
Answer: "Top Coat over POR-15 when dry to the touch with slight finger drag usually 2 to 6 hours. Topcoating over cured POR-15 Rust Preventative Paint or any painted surface requires lightly sanding before applying. Top Coat can take 3-4 days to reach max hardness, and longer in temperatures below 55 degrees F." - label directions
Question: Can top coat be sanded
Answer: I'm using gloss black and when it is dry it is hard as paint. I'm sure sanding will be fine.

Product description

BlackTop is a permanent, moisture-cured, UV stable coating primarily used for topcoating surfaces previously sealed with RustSeal or any other paint/primer application. BlackTop is a high performance protective coating specifically formulated to withstand dulling and fading caused by prolonged sunlight exposure. BlackTop may be used alone as a resilient coating but it will not offer the ultimate rust protection unless it is used in combination with RustSeal. For the best stop rust & ultraviolet protection, first apply RustSeal to permanently seal the surface and then topcoat with BlackTop for an incredibly tough and professional looking finish. Available in Gloss Black, OEM Satin Black & Flat Black. Like RustSeal, BlackTop dries to a rock hard yet flexible coating that can be readily applied to chassis, coil springs and light weight panels. BlackTop also has high heat resistance and can be applied to almost all automotive applications except exhaust systems.

  • BlackTop may be used alone as a resilient coating but it will not offer the ultimate rust protection unless it is used in combination with KBS RustSeal

User questions & answers

Question: what reducer do you use for spraying
Answer: KBS #1 Thinner or Xylene.
Question: Do I have to use any rust seal or anything else to have a good coating
Answer: It is ideal to put down RustSeal first as a primer nut that is NOT necessary. BlackTop will stick really well to a properly cleaned (KBS Klean) and etched (RustBlast) surface and provide a very durable and flexible finish.
Question: I was thinking about using this to undercoat my cab and bed as well as paint firewall/inner fenders. Can I put this coating over bare metal
Answer: Hello Nicole, Yes you can but If you are painting on a bare metal surface I would scuff up the surface with a very fine grit sandpaper first or you can purchase a chemical product that will prepare the surface before painting. This company makes good products but please follow instructions carefully. Best Wishes.
Question: what reducer do you use to spay on
Answer: KBS #1 Thinner or Xylene.

Second Skin Audio Spectrum Liquid Sound Deadening Spray and Paint - Water Based Viscoelastic Vibration Damper for Automotive Insulation (1 Gallon)

Based on 52 reviews Check latest price
  • SOUND DEADENING SPRAY: Spectrum liquid sound dampening material is a high heat, water based viscoelastic polymer, formulated and tested by Second Skin to adhere to metal and stop it from vibrating. Stop the vibrations, stop the noise!
  • CAR SOUND DEADENING & INSULATION: Used to dampen vibrations and stop thermal transfer on metal surfaces in all types of vehicles (cars, boats, trucks). Spectrum also works well on metal warehouse carts, sub-woofer boxes, and HVAC ducts. Spectrum works by stopping vibrations. It will NOT block or absorb airborne sound waves.
  • ADVANTAGES OF LIQUID SPRAY: Spray Spectrum into hard to reach places that sound deadening mats have trouble, such as the undercarriage of the car and the wheel wells. Spectrum is temperature rated to 400 F, so you can even use it on the firewall!
  • PAINT OR SPRAY ON SOUND DEADENING: Applied with a paint brush/roller or spray gun and air compressor. We recommend applying two layers of Spectrum Liquid Deadener to a total thickness of 2-3mm (thicker than a quarter). Max: 5mm
  • PROUDLY MADE IN THE USA

User questions & answers

Question: I live in Arizona...Will this product help keep the internal temperature of the car lower during summer months, much like a windshield shade
Answer: This product does resist heat transfer and will help keep the heat out, but I wouldn't compare its effectiveness to a windshield shade (Probably much less effective? Have not tested one vs the other... good idea though!). Most people use it to resist heat transfer on a car's firewall or undercarriage. If I wanted to insulate a vehicle's roof, my first priority would be an insulating foam (like Second Skin's Mega Zorbe) or jute insulation (like Second Skin's Heat Wave Pro). You can combine with Spectrum for additional benefit, but one of those materials would be priority #1.
Question: How tuff is this product
Answer: Its pretty tough, we have it sprayed onto our sprinter van conversion floor, its holding up great.
Question: If I use this in my wheel well and it gets wet would that be a problem
Answer: Its water based but once it dries its waterproof. Just like water based paint, when dried it won't come off with water!
Question: I'm looking to apply this to the inside of a Jeep Wrangler roof. How will it apply to the fiberglass top
Answer: Spectrum needs a self etching fiber glass primer to bond to the fiber glass surface. Once the primer is cured Spectrum will bond very well, apply your (3) 1 mm coats to achieve recommended thickness. 30-60 minutes between coats above 50 degrees F. You can find this primer at your local paint or body shop, just ask for "self etching fiberglass primer for a water based acrylic polymer paint."

Product features

Stop unwanted noise with the right sound deadening materials.

At Second Skin, we pride ourselves in offering best-in-class solutions to help you eliminate unwanted noise and soundproof your car. Everything we sell has been tested in the field and in the lab to ensure you get the best possible results. We offer a comprehensive line of the best car insulation solutions for your vehicle. Whether you have rattling metal distorting your speakers, a car restoration side-gig, or just want to create a bubble of comfort for yourself as you drive down the highway, we have the high quality materials that will get you to your destination.

Why do cars make so much noise?

Noise inside the passenger compartment of a car comes from one of three sources:

  1. Wind Noise: Noise that enters through gaps, holes, and open windows.
  2. Structural Noise: Noise that is generated by vehicle mechanical systems and travels through the vehicle structure before radiating into the passenger compartment.
  3. Airborne Noise: Noise that is generated by vehicle systems or an external source and enters the passenger compartment by first traveling through air, then passing through a body panel, and finally reradiating into the passenger compartment.

To fix wind noise, you need to plug the holes. To stop structure borne noise, you have to damp the metal. To eliminate airborne noise, you need to block it with a noise barrier.

Quality materials matter. You’ll only make that mistake once.

Spectrum Liquid Sound Deadener is a water-based, viscoelastic polymer formulated by Second Skin Audio for top-of-the-line vibration damping and adhesion. The acrylic polymers in Spectrum have been selected to reduce sheet metal resonance, stick to just about anything, and meet transportation safety standards. Spectrum is odorless, rustproof, waterproof, flame resistant, chemical resistant, non-toxic, and dries with a seamless, black finish. Spectrum can be applied with a spray gun, brush, or roller. For large surfaces or hard to reach areas (like the undercarriage and inside the wheel wells), spraying on Spectrum can be much easier than applying sound deadening mats.

  • Apply Spectrum in 1mm layers to a recommended total thickness of 2mm.
  • Easy to clean up with water within 30 minutes. Do not get on clothes or upholstery.
  • Spectrum is designed to adhere to metal, but will stick to just about any cleaned surface besides plastic or a high gloss surface without a primer.
  • Wait 24-36 hours before reinstalling upholstery, and one week before covering Spectrum with a bed liner or painting it.
  • Spectrum is not a bed liner and can be damaged by heavy impact.
  • Do not freeze! If frozen, do not move or mix until it has completely thawed.

Vibration Damper

  • Stop vibrations and deaden structural noise
  • Significantly outperforms asphalt and tar mats

Thermal Insulation

  • Viscoelastic polymer resists heat transfer
  • Temperature rated to 400 F

Reduce Road Noise

  • Substantially reduce noise level in your car cabin
  • Increase speaker performance

Health & Safety Tested

  • Non-toxic and easy to clean up with water
  • Meets all transportation safety standards

Decide

Decide what parts of the car you want to insulate first: roof, floor, doors, trunk, firewall, hood, wheel wells, or undercarriage. Insulating each part of the vehicle has its benefits. You likely need to do a little detective work to identify the noisiest parts of your car or truck. For the best results, you’ll need to soundproof all of your vehicle’s metal surfaces. Before installing any material though, step #1 is always to expose the sheet metal. For any metal surfaces behind plastic panels or upholstery, you’ll need to research how to remove them. Be careful to avoid breaking plastic trim parts or any fasteners. Detailed step-by-step guides can be found on our website or the one of the many automotive forums.

Remove

Remove all factory insulation to expose bare sheet metal. You can choose to mask off the insulation if it’s in good shape and you want to leave it. Ensure all debris, rust, and waxy oils are removed from the application surface. Clean the surface with denatured alcohol and a dry, clean rag. We do not recommend using a solvent or degreaser, as they can leave behind a film that will prevent the best bond from forming. Allow the metal to dry.

Prepare

Measure the cleaned surface to ensure you have enough Spectrum to cover the application area (1 gallon = 20 sq ft). Prep the surface for your chosen application method. The most effective way to apply Spectrum is to spray it on with a spray gun or airless sprayer. Before starting application, the panel should be masked off for overspray protection. If you use wire tape with plastic masking wrap, removing the plastic masking will be extremely easy and give you a clean cut edge. You don’t need to wear a paint mask, but it is recommended to spray in a well-ventilated area. If you’d rather paint or brush on your sound deadening, you can do that with a paint brush or roller.

Install

A primer is not needed except for plastic or high-gloss surfaces. You will need a spray gun designed to shoot a high viscosity, water-based acrylic polymer. Hook it up to a compressor with 50-80 PSI and a 6 gallon tank (reduce fill up time). Hold the spray gun 4 to 8 inches away from the panel and apply Spectrum with a slow, sweeping motion. The goal is a 1mm layer about as thick as a credit card. Always clean the spray gun immediately after applying a coat of Spectrum or it will cure in the gun. Allow 30 to 60 minutes between application layers, depending on temperature and humidity. We recommend 2mm of total thickness, but you can go up to 5mm.

Spectrum

Sound deadening is the hidden secret behind the upholstery of any car project. To reduce road noise, use Spectrum to stop the structural noise generated by vibrating metal. Stop the vibrations, stop the noise.

Sound Blocking

After you’ve damped the structural noise, stop airborne noise with a sound blocking layer covering the entire floor and inside the doors. Luxury Liner Pro has a high r-value and STC rating, making it an ideal insulating noise barrier for engine, exhaust, and road noise.

Sound Absorption

Further quiet things down inside your vehicle with sound absorption materials. Mega Zorbe has a high r-value, making it excellent for the car roof, and a high sound absorption coefficient to reduce interior echoes and improve acoustics in door cavities.

Answer: Yes. This is the equivalent of what modern cars are coated with in the underbody.
Question: Can you spray this right over rust
Answer: It is recommended that you clean and prepare the surface with a product like MetalReady prior to spraying it with POR to get the best result. Read up on how to use this product effectively and safely. If you get it on your skin, you will wear it for a week or more. It cures in humid conditions; wear a respirator prior to spraying to avoid breathing in particulates.

User questions & answers

Question: can this be used on headlight bezels
Answer: Yes but not last
Question: would this give a mirror effect to matte silver metal
Answer: I don’t think so. I used it to spray a wine bottle and you can see through it but no reflection at all.
Question: Will this work on my rc car body
Answer: Yes it works great on RC Lexan bodies. We used the Ultimate Mirror Chrome Aerosol Paint 3.5oz without the backer. Just tape off what you don't want chrome, spray the inside of the body in several light coats until you get good even coverage. Back it with black, and then paint everything else. Best chrome finish you can get for a lexan body at this time. Paint the colors darkest to lightest. The chrome can be saved for last if the body color is dark. If it is light do the chrome, back it with black, and go to the next lighter color to prevent color contamination.
Question: Can this be used as a backer for regular polycarbonate paint...or is it just for mirror chrome
Answer: It is a lacquer based primer so I would say you can overcoat with any lacquer based paint.

Question: Will this adhere to wood? I want to spray the underside of my pop up camper. The pull out beds are wood platforms too
Answer: Yes Spray undercoat is perfect for this. We do underneath Eva with this undercoat. It’s awesome. Use rubber gloves and crappy clothes to wear. Safety glasses and long sleeves. Spray at arms length. Let dry. Add another coat.
Question: Can i use it for my avalanche to paint the faded plastic
Answer: You could... but this dries with a texture , it doesn't dry flat like paint would , I would get some plastic paint for your bumper , or plasti dip the whole thing
Question: Do i have to treat the rust first
Answer: yes, You have to remove and treat the rust then apply this.
