Answer:	The grab bar side faces out but the flatter plate sits on the opposite side of the door. It gives your fingers a groove to slide the door open or closed but is not a something you can actually grab a hold of like you can with the grab bar. This is designed to be on a sliding, not a swinging door, so this design works well for that. We really like ours. It's very nice and well made and we use it to open the door from both sides.
