13 best water softener for fish tank
A water softener for a fish tank is a device or treatment method used to reduce the hardness of the water in an aquarium. Water hardness is primarily determined by the concentration of minerals, particularly calcium and magnesium ions, present in the water. The hardness of water is typically measured in degrees of hardness, such as degrees KH (carbonate hardness) and degrees GH (general hardness).
Here are some key points about water softeners for fish tanks:
Purpose: Water softeners are used to create a more suitable environment for fish and aquatic plants in aquariums. Some species of fish and plants are sensitive to high levels of water hardness, so softening the water can help create the ideal conditions for them.
Types of Water Softeners:
- Chemical Water Softeners: These products typically come in the form of additives or water conditioners that can be added to the aquarium water. They work by binding to the minerals responsible for hardness and making them less available to affect the water's hardness.
- Mechanical Water Softeners: These are devices that physically remove minerals from the water. Examples include ion exchange resin filters and reverse osmosis systems. These devices are usually installed as part of the aquarium's filtration system.
Monitoring Water Parameters: It's crucial to regularly monitor the hardness of the water using test kits specific to GH and KH. This helps ensure that the softening process is effective and that the water parameters remain stable.
Compatibility with Fish Species: Not all fish species require or thrive in soft water conditions. Before implementing a water softener, it's essential to research the specific requirements of the fish species in your aquarium. Some fish may prefer harder water, so making drastic changes in water hardness can be detrimental.
Maintaining pH: Softening water can also affect the pH level of the aquarium. It tends to lower the pH, so it's essential to monitor and adjust the pH as needed to maintain a stable and suitable pH for your fish.
Gradual Changes: If your aquarium requires a change in water hardness, it's essential to make gradual adjustments rather than sudden shifts. Rapid changes in water parameters can stress and harm fish.
Regular Water Changes: Regardless of whether you use a water softener, regular water changes are vital for maintaining water quality in the aquarium. Freshwater should be properly treated and conditioned to match the desired parameters.
In conclusion, water softeners for fish tanks can be useful tools for creating the ideal water conditions for specific fish and aquatic plants. However, it's essential to understand the requirements of your aquarium's inhabitants and to monitor water parameters carefully to ensure the health and well-being of your aquatic pets.

User questions & answers
Question: | For a 5 gallon aquarium, would I just use the pillow for 48 hours, then each time I 25% water change, or does the pillow have to remain in the tank |
Answer: | The pillow should remain in the filter. When you use this be careful of the PH in the tank. I have found that the pillow can cause the PH to go quite alkaline and some fish are very sensitive to this. |
Question: | Does it hurt to leave the pillows in the filter until next water change? Will it shorten the life of the pillows (x's you can recharge |
Answer: | The instruction I found online say that it should not be left in for long periods. And, you can recharge it with sunlight, if you use it for the period of time only long enough to get the change you are looking for in the water. Thanks my experience. |
Question: | Will it stain water |
Answer: | No, it will not stain water. |
Question: | What is the recharging process |
Answer: | 3 tablespoons aquarium salt dissolved in 7 ounces of tap water, use a shallow dish. Rinse the pillow after removing from filter area and soak in salt solution for 2 hrs. Always store pillow in salt solution when not using. Discard pillow when it is no longer effective (check the water hardness to verify.) I use a plastic Chinese to-go dish, the white rectangular ones. |

IPW Industries Inc. Filtration-Grade Garnet Gravel (15 Lbs)
Help your filtration last longer with under bed support gravel. This gravel is specifically chosen as it does not change the composition of your water even after long term use. The garnet gravel does create more even dispersion for water softeners, carbon filters, mixed media filtration tanks, and water conditioners. Without this dispersion, one specific part of your media may degrade faster than the other and causing damage to the filters and the need for early replacement.
Before using this gravel we suggest giving it a quick wash, just in case any dust or debris has settled onto it. Dump your gravel into a large bucket or bin. Then, fill the container with water and using your hands or a sturdy stirring tool agitate the gravel. After that just drain the water and you're ready to go. This 15-pound bag is enough gravel for any filter tank up to 10" in diameter and 54" tall. Two bags should work for any size greater than 12" in diameter but lower than 16" in diameter and 54" tall (which needs 35lbs of gravel).

User questions & answers
Question: | Is it rechargeable |
Answer: | It’s gravel that can be used for softeners or filters. Gravel like this is meant to be used to give water even water distribution during upflow backwashes or upflow regenerations. |
Question: | How long to fully clean 135g running to 75g can filters with a bag of this each approx |
Answer: | I am sure it can. It is as advertised, gravel. |
Question: | Can it be used in salt water reef? Or will it remove the salt too? I just need it temporarily to remove tap water contaminants then I dose calc &mag |
Answer: | I had hard water and a basic pH (6.3) coming from my tap that caused problems when I changed water. I tried multiple products that all had seperate issues to use ie adding acid to balance was difficult with fish in the tank and tank was too big (75 gal) to premix the water. I used the Peat as a filtering stage and it solved the pH and hardness problem. I put 2 filter bags of 250 grams (probably could have used less) as a top stage in my filter. Note it did slightly tint the water brown. |
Question: | How much is needed per gallon? How long does it last in the canister filter before you have to replace it |
Answer: | You don't have to remove the carbon from your tank when using this. Although the carbon would help in removing the slight tint of brown that this will leave behind in the water. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this test for Ferric or Ferrous iron |
Answer: | Yes, the strip can test for Ferrous iron. |
Question: | For the manufacturer - is one single drop from the dropper directly onto the test pad (one for each) a sufficient amount of water to test the levels |
Answer: | Yes, one drop for each pad is sufficient. Please rinse the dropper 2-3 times with the testing water before using (just suck the water in and squeeze it out). This is to clean/prepare the dropper. The other thing is, we use special coat on each testing pad to avoid water running from pad to pad, and you can see the water drop is contained within each pad. If you find it is not easy to read the colour with excess water, you can gently shake off the excess water on the strip, AFTER waiting for 30 seconds so the colours have fully developed. If you need further support, send us a message or email, we can send you some demonstration videos or pictures. |
Question: | How do I get the ebook? Is there a link |
Answer: | Hi, if you purchased our test kit before 8/Mar/2020, we have sent the eBook through Amazon message system. If you ordered after 8/Mar/2020, there is a card included in the package with instruction of how to get the eBook. If you don't get your eBook by either of ways mentioned, please send us an email or contact us through Amazon message. Best regards, Anna from SJ Wave |
Question: | Does the free chlorine testing pad on this tester react to chlorine dioxide |
Answer: | Yes. Our test kit can test the free chlorine if you use the chlorine dioxide to treat your water. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this need to be charged before being added to aquarium or is it ready straight from the package? How much salt for one bag/ two bags when making |
Answer: | Ive, heard it both ways, yes/no. I guess it depends upon the material used. But know this even if it is (reusable) it not forever at most several times. |
Question: | Can this be used in a planted tank |
Answer: | I would purchase 2 this way you can run one for a week and then swap it out for another week.then clean and recharge the first one for the next time and repeat in aquarium salt solution. keep testing your water till you reach the level you are trying to reach. |
Question: | Does this absorb ammonia |
Answer: | this is to soften hard water! if you are trying to make tape water safe you need to use sea chem prime that will help remove tap water contaminants. |
Question: | How nany are needed for a 50 gal fresh tank |
Answer: | Depends on how hard your water is. I place 2 of them in my filter's return flow every month or so and then recharge. My 150 gal tank is now doing great ! before using this my water was twice as hard as sea water ! |
- This product is great for aquariums, laboratory testing, and other applications for pure water.

- 2 year limited manufacturer warranty.
User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be hooked up to a kitchen sink and used for drinking water |
Answer: | I used it straight from the package. |
Question: | What is water to waste ratio |
Answer: | Yes, I use it in mine. The water in gilroy, ca is so hard and it’s so costly to try and get distilled. I have 70 gallons to keep up. I eventually went with an r/o system in conjunction with this, but the pillow alone brought my water hardness down from a 13 to 5 on a hardness scale. Which is good for a planted tank as you don’t want to take all the minerals out of the water |
Question: | What size is the tubing/hoses |
Answer: | No |
Question: | Where can I find replacement cartridges for this and how long should they be changed |
Answer: | roughly 1 for every 50 gallons |

User questions & answers
Question: | I have had this product for about 2 weeks. In the past few days it began to smell reallly bad. It smells like old faithful. Does anyone elses smell |
Answer: | i keep mine in the refrigerator to avoid that situation from happening. It is probably spoiled. First, check the expiration date on the bottle, if it is still supposed to be good, you may want to look around the storage area you had it in for local heat sources that can sour it, such as: periods of direct sunlight during the day, sitting in front of the heat vent, etc. These can spoil the product in short order. Like I said, I keep mine in the fridge just to be safe, (all my liquids for my tank are in the fridge, even tho they do not require it.) I hope that helps. for what it is worth, the smell I get from a fresh one has a tang of aloe vera to it, smelling like a swimming pool kinda smell, minus the chlorine. |
Question: | What's the difference between the tap water conditioner, the stress coat conditoner & the stress zyme. I'm confused, do I need all three for my biorb |
Answer: | Looking at the ounces needed per gallon, the stress coat treats 60 gallons per ounce while the tap water conditioner treats 600 gallons per ounce. It looks like the stress coat does more things to protect the fish, but the tap water conditioner will treat more tap water per bottle. |
Question: | Can I use it for the water I use to water my plants? My plants don't do well with my tap water. Thanks |
Answer: | Late to the game, but I think this question needs a better answer; is this safe for plants? YES. Bog and fresh water plants are just as sensitive to their environment (if not more) than terrestrial plants and this product works great in planted tanks. This does nothing to change PH, so if your soil has a PH problem this wont fix it. Be aware this is an expensive solution for house plants, you might find something cheaper at a garden center or the cheapest solution is letting the water 'gas out' if your only problem is chlorine. When I had only about a gallons worth of water changes, I bought a mop bucket just for my betta fish, pored water into it and let it sit out for two days so the chlorine gas could work its way out. Never had an issue. Now I have a bigger tank so mixing water on the fly is much less hassle then having a bunch of buckets sitting around. |
Question: | What is the difference between the 1 gallon item at $37.28 and the 128 ounce item at |
Answer: | $17.82 |

Feed Your Fish Daily
Feed your fish twice daily with API Fish Food which contains nutritionally enhanced proteins, allowing for easy uptake of nutrients and maximum absorption, resulting in less excrement for clear, clean water. Take time to observe fish to ensure they are active & healthy and be sure to check water temperature.
Test Water Quality Weekly
An aquarium is a closed environment and in order for fish to thrive, water must be similar to that which could be found in their natural environment. Poor water quality can cause fish stress, illness and even loss. The 5 common water quality parameters are Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, and pH - all of which may vary over time and all are invisible to the eye which is why it is important to test weekly with API MASTER TEST KITS or API 5-IN-1 TEST STRIPS. It is also a good time to add API STRESS ZYME to keep your aquarium & gravel clean.
Change 25% Water Every 2 Weeks
In a closed aquarium environment there are no natural rivers or streams to carry away debris and other waste materials. It is important to renew 25% of the aquarium water every two weeks. When you change the water, it is important to know that tap water contains chemicals that make it safe for us to drink but harmful for fish, therefore add a water conditioner such as API STRESS COAT.
Restore Your Ecosystem Monthly
It is important to change your filter media & clean gravel monthly, however in doing so it can disrupt the fragile ecosystem of your aquarium. Use API QUICK START to strengthen it with ‘beneficial’ nitrifying bacteria that will naturally consume toxic compounds and help prevent fish stress. Also recommended when starting a new aquarium or changing the water.
Making A Better Underwater World
At API, we understand the rewards and relaxation of fishkeeping because we have a passion for fish too. For over 50 years API has developed premium solutions with proven and effective results for your family and ours. API offers a range of testing kits, water conditioners, and nutritionally superior food, because we’re dedicated to making a better underwater world.

Thats about enough for 21 water changes (if you do 10 gallons each time). 1 tablespoon for every 5 gallons = 6 tablespoons or 3/8 of a cup. I have a 29 gallon tank and I do water changes biweekly (mollys poop a lot). I recommend this as some water filtering systems and treatments remove vital electrolytes. Think of it as Gatorade or alkaline mineral water for your fish. Its also good to have for when they are a bit under the weather. |

Product description
EcoBio-Stones are volcanic rock and cement containing 100% pure beneficial bacteria spores, which effectively clarify cloudy water in aquariums, reducing maintenance. Simply rinse off the EcoBio-Stone, soak overnight and place in aquarium. Using nature's system of purifying water, EcoBio-Stone's beneficial bacteria break down organic waste into ammonia, then into nitrites and then into nitrates, which are processed by vegetation or by anaerobic bacteria changing the nitrates into nitrogen gas, which dissipate into the air. The process of building sufficient amounts of bacteria to take care of the conditions in the average tank, normally results in crystal clear water in 2 to 4 weeks, with a sudden clearing of the water. EcoBio-Stone safely purifies water, eliminates odors and creates a clear and clean environment for fish and other aquatic life. EcoBio-Stone's volcanic stone also leaches back the essential calcium and trace minerals, which are normally returned to water with frequent water changes. This dual action creates a perfect ecosystem. Note: if the water in your tank is very acidic please use EcoBio-Stones after acclimating your fish to pH neutral water by doing water changes.
- Volcanic rock containing beneficial bacteria colonies, disperse about every 30 minutes. Clarifies cloudy water and eliminates odors
- Speeds up nitrogen cycle, with 100% pure bacteria in spores which germinate in early, middle and late stages, only germinating in the presence of organic waste.
- Reduces need for frequent maintenance by continually replenishing beneficial bacteria for 1 and a half to two years
- Safe for all fish, reptiles, amphibians and other aquatic life
- Simple to use, no mess aquarium care in fresh or salt water. M size treats tanks from 15 to 40 gallons.
User questions & answers
Question: | Does it take care of ammonia |
Answer: | Yes, it can be but we don't recommend it. The water from the system is too pure for drinking water (0 ppm) and all the essential minerals are removed during the filtration process. |
Question: | Have a smaller size for a 10 gallon tank |
Answer: | 1:3. Every gallon made the system will reject about 3 gallons of waste water. You can add a water saver kit or an ERP 1000 pump to reduce the waste water by half. Thanks. |
Question: | Are these very rough? Will they damage the barbels on corys |
Answer: | 1/4 inch. |
Question: | My rock is developing white hard buildup, is this normal |
Answer: | You can get replacement cartridges through Amazon. The filters are standard size. How often the filters and ion exchange resin bed need to be changed depends on the supply water quality and ion content. There is no defined filter volume to determine filter change, it will be different for everyone based on supply water quality. Determination on when to replace filters or ion exchange cartridge is commonly done by testing output conductivity, Total Dissolved Solids (TDS, they sell the meters on Amazon) and pH. I compare output TDS and pH to input values to ensure the unit is providing the quality of water I require. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this clean the water right away so i can add fish right after or wait for it to settle |
Answer: | I would recommend API Stress Zyne Plus. My fish kept dying for the first few weeks. It took almost 8 weeks to for the tank to cycle. So get 2 or 3 fist to start and nothing fancy. Keep testing for Amonia levels. Once the tank cycles, it should be at 0. Then you can get fish you want to keep. |
Question: | How often are you supposed to use this product |
Answer: | The directions state 25 ml per 10 gallons on day 1 (100 ml) and then 10 ml per 10 gallons on day 2 and 3 (40 ml per day) so a total of 180 ml for your 40 gallon breader. I do a sustainment treatment every week of 5 ml per 10 gallons (another 20 ml). I think this is a great way to get and keep a large colony of beneficial bacteria. Good luck with the new tank! |
Question: | Do you have to treat the water and then put it in the tank or can you do water change and then immediately add this stuff? I've been adding water and then this stuff rigth after in the tank |
Answer: | The smaller 4 oz size would be great for a 6 gallon tank. It would last for quite awhile but not so long you would not have fresh product available when you do reorder. Add a few drops to your filter after cleaning it to jump start beneficial enhancers there as well. |
Question: | can I use this with my live plant tank? will it bad for the live plant |
Answer: | If you're looking to set up a new tank, i'd use the biggest bottle possible; the more bacteria the better the start you'll have. However, this is not a product i generally recommend, because the bacteria contained in these bottles are temporary spot holders for the real bacteria to colonize your filter after a few weeks. I'd rather you get microbelift's nite out II or Dr tims one and only (a bit more expensive), which contains the actual bacteria your filter needs. |

User questions & answers
Question: | i purchased correct ph 7.0. i received correct ph with no level indicated on the boxes. how do i know i received |
Answer: | One of the primary reasons for using EcoBio-Block is that it removes ammonia, but because it uses live beneficial bacteria, it takes some time. It usually takes about 2 weeks, but it depends on the conditions in your tank. |
Question: | Is this ok to use with live plants in the aquarium |
Answer: | I believe Amazon does. |
Question: | How exactly does this work how will a tablet flip the ph up or down? Or is there tablets for ph up and ph down in this box? Nothing else does both |
Answer: | I have one of these, and I have 6 panda corys and 3 "Virginia" corys, and it has not hurt them. Actually, the fishes all ignore it. This thing isn't needed for anything. To get rid of ammonia and nitrite, use as large a filter as you can afford, and only put sponges and biomax (porous ceramic pellets) inside it. NO "ammonia remover" and other bags of "removers": those actually make the ammonia stay! A local aquarium store employee gave me that very handy tip, after I had had ammonia for weeks on end. Once I got that advice, the ammonia and nitrite disappeared and have never returned. People like Fluval should be reprimanded for peddling "ammonia remover" and their other granules in bags. The Fluval filters are good, though. I went for the 306 external filter and got rid of all my internal filters. The aquarium is 2' long, 18" high and 1' from front to back. So, don't waste your money on gimmicks like this (though I did leave mine in the aquarium) and bags of granules. |
Question: | Is it safe for invertebrates? Is there any cooper in the formula |
Answer: | It depends, I have 3 and only 1 has white spots, however it is also in a different set up, the white spots formed within the first 3 weeks and haven't done anything since, they look like hard water buildup, but I haven't noticed that it impacts the water quality. After we finished cycling the water has been perfect and I know there have a been a few times where I went 5 or 6 weeks between changing water and haven't had any issue. The aquarium that has the white spot is the one that suffers most from evaporation so I wonder if it has something to do with that, we lose about 5 gallons every other week to evaporation, so it may be related to hard water buildup, but the fish are happy and colors are vibrant and water tests at Petsmart are perfect every time, so I don't worry about it and hasn't been a problem for me. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I have ammonia in my tap water. Will this remove it |
Answer: | This product won't have a test indicator. You will need to purchase a separate testing kit. The best kit's (in my experience) are the kits that have "test tubes" where you add a few drops of testing solutions. Test strips are o.k., but you get better readings thru a test kit with test tubes where you pull a sample of aquarium water into the test tubes, place a few drops of solution (included in kits) and read the color of the water against a chart, then toss the water you've tested away (not back into the tank). I've been using a "Freshwater Master Test Kit" that tests not only PH levels, but water hardness, ammonia, nitrates/nitrites, etc. These kits are approximately $25-$30 and provide an ample supply to last for a while, but they are a good investment if you want to know what the full spectrum of how healthy (or unhealthy) your aquarium is rather than testing only (1) aspect of the water. Hope this helps. |
Question: | Can you this product in a turtle tank with fish in the same tank |
Answer: | Yes. "Safe for aquarium fish & plants" per the info on the back of the box. |
Question: | Can you use too much? How much would be needed for 3 gals of water during water changing for my 10 gal tank |
Answer: | It works by raising the ph. If you need to lower ph use driftwood and some moss balls. |
Question: | Do i need any other water treatment |
Answer: | Box does not indicate make up of tablet; Suggest you e-mail tetra-fish.com for the the information you are seeking. |
