12 best fish aquarium filter

A fish aquarium filter is an essential component of any aquarium setup, designed to maintain water quality by removing impurities and providing a healthier environment for fish and aquatic pets. There are various types of aquarium filters, each with its own method of filtration, including mechanical, chemical, and biological processes. Here are some key points about aquarium filters:

  1. Types of Aquarium Filters:

    • Mechanical Filters: These filters physically remove solid particles from the water, such as uneaten food and debris, using materials like filter pads or sponges.
    • Chemical Filters: Chemical filtration involves the use of activated carbon or other specialized media to adsorb and remove dissolved impurities, such as ammonia, nitrite, and odors.
    • Biological Filters: These filters promote the growth of beneficial bacteria that convert toxic ammonia and nitrite into less harmful nitrate. Common biological filtration methods include sponge filters, wet/dry filters, and canister filters.
  2. Filter Placement:

    • Filters can be placed within the aquarium or in an external filter unit, such as a canister filter or a sump system, depending on the size and type of the aquarium.
  3. Filter Maintenance:

    • Regular maintenance is crucial for the effective operation of aquarium filters. This includes cleaning or replacing filter media, rinsing mechanical filter components, and monitoring water parameters.
  4. Filter Sizing:

    • It's essential to choose a filter that is appropriately sized for your aquarium. A filter's capacity should match the volume of water in your tank, taking into account factors like the type and number of fish and the amount of waste produced.
  5. Cycling and Biological Filtration:

    • Establishing a nitrogen cycle in your aquarium is vital for biological filtration. This cycle involves the growth of beneficial bacteria that convert ammonia into nitrite and then nitrate. This process ensures a stable and safe environment for your fish.
  6. Filter Selection:

    • The choice of filter depends on the aquarium size, the type of fish and plants you keep, and your budget. Common filter types include sponge filters, hang-on-back filters, canister filters, and sump systems.
  7. Water Quality:

    • Proper filtration plays a significant role in maintaining water quality by removing pollutants and maintaining the appropriate chemical balance in the aquarium. This, in turn, helps keep fish and aquatic pets healthy.
  8. Additional Considerations:

    • Some aquarium filters may include additional features like adjustable flow rates, UV sterilizers, and surface skimmers to enhance their functionality.

In conclusion, aquarium filters are essential tools for maintaining a clean and healthy aquatic environment for your fish and aquatic pets. Choosing the right type of filter and maintaining it properly are critical aspects of successful aquarium keeping.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this filter effective for turtles
Answer: In order to use this filter for a turtle aquarium, your water level must stay ABOVE the minimum water level line at all times, which means it needs to be within 3-4 inches of the top of the tank. This is a problem with most turtle tanks unless you have a Turtle Topper. Otherwise, it will work well for a turtle tank.
Question: Could you add a sponge filter to the intake so it becomes Fry friendly
Answer: Yes, you sure could! You could use sponge media or filter floss. Just be sure to clean or replace it whenever it becomes clogged.
Question: Does it have a warranty
Answer: Yes, it comes with a 3 year warranty on all manufacturer's defects. This does not include normal wear and tear or abuse, of course, but Tetra has a very liberal warranty policy. If you need warranty help, call 1-800-526-0650.
Question: does this come with biobag and carbon filters or do u have to buy some
Answer: Your initial purchase of the filter includes the Whisper Bio Bags ( 1 of them for the models 20, 30 and 45, 2 for the 70) and the Bio Scrubbers (again, 1 for the 20, 30, 45 models and 2 for the 70). You should replace your cartridges on a monthly basis, but can rinse them in between changes. The Bio Scrubbers should literally last forever, unless you lose them or damage them somehow. Wash these off in a bucket of tank water with a toothbrush.

Product features

Filter cartridge carrier

The Tetra Whisper Power Filter comes with a filter cartridge carrier which keeps your hands clean and eliminates any unwanted drips.

Success Made Easy

We've made it simple to maintain a beautiful clear tank without the stress. With Tetra's 30-30-30 program and our handpicked supplies, taking care of your fish is as soothing as enjoying them.

Multi-stage filtration with bio-scrubber

Unlike other filters, the Whisper EX directs water through multiple densities of floss to remove particles. The carbon inside eliminates odors, discoloration, and impurities. The Bio-Scrubber removes ammonia and nitrites that are toxic to your fish.

Maximum oxygenation

The Tetra Whisper EX filter is designed to move your aquarium’s water continuously. The outflow optimizes water oxygenation while the motor operates quietly.

Can be used in turtle tanks

The Tetra Whisper EX filter can be used in turtle tanks. The water level must stay above the minimum water level line at all times, which means it needs to be within 3-4 inches of the top of the tank.

Step 1

Remove all packaging and attach strainer (and extension tubes, if necessary) so that strainer will be no closer than 2" to aquarium gravel once the system is hanging on aquarium frame.

Step 2

Hang system on aquarium frame. Be sure aquarium water is at or above the minimum water level indicated on system's motor assembly.

Step 3

Once system is properly in place, plug filtration system into outlet being sure to average a drip loop with the power cord.

User questions & answers

Question: I need a new impeller for this filter. 30-60gal aquatech. WHere do I look
Answer: Hi Collin! You'll need to get the whole tube set. Check it out here: http://a.co/1ured1Q.
Question: How long in the intake tube for the 30-60 gallon? Is the an option to purchase an extender, if needed
Answer: It's about 10". Not sure if you can buy extension
Question: When will my order be in stock (aqua tech 30 - 60 gallon tank filter), at this time, not when it ships
Answer: Good afternoon, I am not sure what you are asking exactly. In terms of the availability of the item: It is available for now. If you do decide to purchase it, it will be shipped early morning the very next business day. I hope this answers your question. If you have any additional questions, please feel free to contact me. Thank you and have a great day.
Question: If I have a 72 gallon bow front tank, would these work good enough if I bought two to keep the tank clear
Answer: I would suggest a stronger filter than aquatech, which works for smaller variety up to 60 g. You should go for aquaclear 70 or 110, they are great but are costly. I always aim for higher recommended capacity, for example for a 10 g, I would buy a filter for 20g. They are better for the long run. It's also based on your fish if they prefer low or high flow, aquaclear lets you control the flow and has three stages of filtration, which is why I like it, but aquatech is a good starter option I've had it for a couple years and I mean it does its job.

User questions & answers

Question: on average how often should they be changed on a 3 gallon tank
Answer: I change mine every month. This prevents algae from forming in the tank and help keep your fish happy. But make sure you either use water conditioning drops or let the water you will be using to fill the tank sit for at least 48 hours. I keep three 1 gallon containers on the side so I can change my tank water every month. (Also, did you know that the water from your fish tank is great for your house/garden plants.) Let me know if you have any further questions.
Question: what are the dimensions of the bags
Answer: They are 4.6" wide by 6.4" high, Stefan. Thanks for inquiring!
Question: Is this the same as a Top Fin "Element" filter cartridge
Answer: Not exactly. I tried this one on mine and although it fit, I had to really squeeze it in. I think I kind of left a dent on my filters, but it works! This is also worth it considering Top Fin’s prices are more expensive for sure.
Question: What direction should the "cloth" side of the filter face? (Outside or Inside
Answer: The plastic goes toward the tank. Water flows through the cloth side, and that is where poop and other solid material should get lodged. The water then flows through the cloth to the activated carbon. The water should always be filtered before it gets to the activated carbon, as the carbon removes gases and not solid material. The water then flows through the slots in the plastic side back into the tank. If you turn it the other way around, water flows through the plastic part directly to the activated carbon, where the carbon will quickly stop working because it would get clogged with poop. The plastic is not designed to be part of the filter, just to return water to the tank. Again, you want poop and other solid material stuck in the cloth side before the water gets to the activated carbon inside. Plastic side goes to tank, cloth side is ALWAYS IN ALL FILTERS the first thing the "dirty" water is supposed to touch.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this come with a filter cartridge
Answer: Comes with the filter cartridge and bio-scrubber which works much better than previous models. I'm very happy with this filter. Have 2 turtles (that are very dirty) and it keeps my water crystal clear.
Question: Would a small fish get sucked up in this filter? I have a 2 month old beta who is just recently getting color fins but still very small
Answer: it would. Because the fish has to sleep. Unless you have a bigger tank, it will be sucked in when they fell asleep even if she is strong to swim away while awake. I would cover the water intake with filter mesh or unwanted nylon silk stockings
Question: Where can I just get the Bioscrubber
Answer: Hello. You can get it at a pet store, amazon has some, grocery stores with a pet section...they are pretty easy to find.
Question: What size replacement filter cartridge for this unit...small, med
Answer: The Tetra Bio-Bag Large (formerly known as Regular) are the exact same as the filter bag supplied with the Tetra Whisper In-Tank filter 20i. I got both from Amazon: filter $11.89; 12 cartridges $12.28. These filters last a long time, can be cleaned and reused. For my purpose, this filter has been great.

Question: are these the same as rite size c
Answer: To answer this question... I need more information regarding the 'rite size C'? What is the brand name of the original filter you use with your system? If the brand name is AquaTech... try searching for that Name followed by size C in the Amazon search window.
Question: Will these cartridges fit in a Top Fin 75 filter unit

AQUA-TECH EZ-Change Aquarium Filter Cartridge

Each of the AQUA-Tech Power Filters provides this 3-stage filtration for healthier fish and cleaner water.

The first stage of the AQUA-Tech filtration is mechanical. The blue polyfiber pad that is integrated onto the EZ-Change Filter Cartridge screens out dirt and debris as water passes through.

The second stage of the AQUA-Tech filtration is chemical. The activated carbon that is in the EZ-Change Filter Cartridge removes dissolved waste and cleans the water of odors.

The third stage of the AQUA-Tech filtration is biological. The BIO-Fiber that is included in each AQUA-Tech Power Filter provides additional surface area for beneficial bacteria to grow and thrive. The bacteria then eliminate toxic ammonia and nitrites that can be fatal to fish. You should never clean or throw away the BIO-Fiber. If the BIO-Fiber becomes too clogged, rinse it with conditioned water only.

User questions & answers

Question: medium size it's for 10 galons
Answer: Hi Oscar, the medium size fits the Whisper PF10 and the Whisper 20 Power Filters.
Question: What is the difference between the 26164 and ATS26164? Both seem to be 12 large Whisper filter cartridges
Answer: Hi, I use the Medium size whisper filter cartridges...the difference between the 26164 & ATS26164 could be the fact that one is a pre-assembled cartridge and the other is not. I buy the 12 pack of unassembled filters which are quite a bit cheaper and are the identical product. It comes with the white filters, one plastic insert, and small charcoal bags that take a few minutes to assemble. Hope this helps.
Question: Does it fit topfin power filter
Answer: I bought these about a month ago for my top fin 10 filter. The cartridge in my top fin 10 is angled inward at the bottom whereas this filter cartridge is more of a rectangular shape. Due to the shape it does not fit the top fin 10 slot. However I kept my old cartridge frame and I'm using this product, everything works great.

User questions & answers

Question: yesterday i cleaned out my filter and i put it back on but it wont suck in water from the pipe there is no pressure even after i pump it. why
Answer: I came home and my filter was not running. I have had this for a month and it was running great. I cleaned out the filter, etc. and cannot get it to prime. I feel like I have tried everything! I filled the canister with water and it will not prime. When using the prime button, the water goes up to a certain point but does not prime.. Help!
Question: What is the difference between the 1000, 1200, and
Answer: What the others said. Personally I would get the largest you can afford. More filtration is never a bad thing. The 1200 and 1500 use the same filter pads.
Question: Will filter work for a 100 gallon tank for my red ear slider turtle
Answer: Yes. I use this for my CST in a 55 gallon tank. This is a great filter. Remember, it is more about the media you use than the filter alone. Experiment with media to see what works best for you. For my turtle, I have found that layering sponges in the bottom tray from coarse, medium to fine and then using Matrix bio media in the next 2 trays and then using carbon and an ammonia neutralizing carbon in the last two trays works wonders. It really keeps my turtle tank clean. This filter is easy to use, prime and clean. Plus it is very affordable. All canister filters are basically equal, the media is what really matters.
Question: Will this include an installation manual and all the tubings? I am new to canister filters and I want to know as much as possible before purchasing
Answer: Yes, though you would do well to check out some YouTube videos demonstrating the setup, as well as the steps to take to disconnect the unit from the tubes for cleaning. The manual that comes with the filter is a great start, but a little unclear at times.

Product description

The fully adjustable flow regulation feature on the Tidal Power Filter adjusts performance to a specific aquarium volume, type, or provide an environment for fish that prefer more or less water movement or oxygenation. Adjust the dial from anywhere between 450 gallons per hour down to a gentle 90 gallons per hour.

For over three decades, Seachem has been a company rooted in sound science. Our experience in the hobby and educated staff of chemists and biologists are part of the package when you purchase Seachem products. Seachem remains as one of the few surviving independent and privately owned pet care companies. Seachem is owned and operated by hobbyists. All of our employees are hobbyists who maintain aquariums at home and at the office. Seachem itself was started because one such passionate hobbyist - Dr. Leo G. Morin (Founder) - recognized the lack of available solutions to aquarists'.. This resulted in Seachem’s very first product: Cupraplex (today known as Cupramine). Over thirty years later Seachem is still approaching old problems in a new way.

Seachem’s philosophy is that the knowledgeable hobbyist makes the best customer. This is reflected in solid and reliable customer education and support as well as products proven in science and performance. While Seachem has grown rapidly into a national and international firm, it retains the culture of a small company and is readily available to its customers.

  • FLOW REGULATION: The fully adjustable flow regulation feature on the Tidal Power Filter adjusts performance to a specific aquarium volume, type, or provide an environment for fish that prefer more or less water movement or oxygenation. Adjust the dial from anywhere between 450 gallons per hour down to a gentle 90 gallons per hour.
  • SURFACE SKIMMER: The surface skimmer on the Tidal Power Filter will capture the water from just below the surface, where excreted fish oils accumulate, as well as deeper in the tank to remove floating debris.
  • ADJUSTABLE INTAKE FLOW: With Tidal’s dual intake, it pulls water in through the telescoping pipe below the surface and at the surface through the surface skimmer. Easily adjust how much flow comes from the underwater intake pipe versus the surface skimmer with the intake flow dial.
  • HEATER HOLDER: A heater can be attached to the side of the Tidal Power Filter with an optional heater clip, allowing for better dispersal of heated water throughout your tank or aquarium.
  • MAINTENANCE ALERT: When filtration media becomes clogged with detritus and affects the flow of water, the Tidal Power Filter redirects water around the filter and back into the aquarium through an outlet on the side. The redirected water then pushed up the blue maintenance alert on the top of the filter, signaling that the filter needs to be cleaned.

User questions & answers

Question: I have a 33 gallon long tank, which is only 12in deep, what is the total height from top to end of inlet tube
Answer: It does not have an inlet tube just the surface skimmer and a second inlet at the bottom of the filter housing. Overall it extends about 5 inches below the surface.
Question: What is the widest the rim can be to use this
Answer: 1 inch
Question: Is this difficult to shrimp safe?, or would you recommend leaving as is
Answer: I don't think this filter can be made shrimp safe. I would recommend the Aquaclear filter and covering the intake with a Powkoo intake filter sponge.
Question: What is the minimum space you need behind the tank to fit this Tidal 35? I only have about 3 inches to the wall
Answer: Unit Length: 6 ⅛ in (15.5 cm) Width: 5 ⅛ in (13 cm) Height: 7 ⅛ in (18 cm) Media Chamber Length: 5 ⅜ in (13.8 cm) Width: 2 in (5.2 cm) Height: 4 ⅞ in (12.5 cm) Wall Clearance 2 ¾ in (7 cm) Tank Trim Clearance 13⁄16 in (2 cm) Internal Tank Clearance 1 ⅜ in (3.5 cm)

Seachem Tidal Power Aquarium Filter - 35 Gallon Large Fish Tank Filter

  • Ventilation slots in the lid of the filter and aeration grooves in the outflow ensure that water returned to the tank is fully oxygenated and maximize gas exchange during filtration.
  • The pump pushes water up into the basket of the filter, entering through the bottom of the basket and being pushed out the top. A bottom-to-top flow ensures that water comes into contact will all filter media, and cannot go around or over filter media as with hang on back filters with a back-to-front flow.
  • Over time, filtration media can become clogged with detritus reducing or obstructing the flow of water through it. When this happens in Tidal filters, water is redirected around the filter and back into the aquarium through an outlet on the side. The redirected water pushes up the blue maintenance alert on the top of the filter, signaling that the filter needs to be cleaned.
  • The surface skimmer will capture the water from just below the surface, where excreted fish oils accumulate, as well as deeper in the tank removing floating debris.

Features:

  • The filter basket has a huge capacity to hold filtration media of your choice in the configuration of your choice. All Tidal Filters come with Seachem's Matrix bio-media to get you started.
  • The basket is fully removable and snaps into the lid of the filter for easy and drip-free transit to a sink or hose for cleaning.
  • Self-priming pump means there is no need to fill the filter basket with water, start a siphon, monitor the filter, or any of the other headaches of starting a new filter.
  • The self-cleaning, corrosion-resistant impeller is suited for both saltwater and freshwater environments. This cuts down on maintenance and makes the filter suitable for a wide range of environments.
  • A leveler on the base of the filter lets the filter adjust to a variety of aquarium styles.

About Us

Tetra has been around since 1951. Tetra’s tradition of innovation started more than 50 years ago in Melle, Germany, where Dr. Ulrich Baensch founded the company (Tetra Werke) and pioneered the development of flake fish food –– an innovation that revolutionized the industry. At the time, growing and harvesting food for your fish was a painstaking process. The advent of flake fish food not only made feeding your pet much easier. It opened the way for more people to own an aquarium. Today, our biologists, chemists, and nutritionists continue to study and discover what keeps fish, reptiles, amphibians, ponds –– as well as aquatic plants–– thriving through a long, healthy life. Our goal is to re-energize the category by reinventing it –– building fish-, reptile-, and pond- keeping confidence, one innovation at a time. After all, we’re not just biologists, nutritionists, and chemists. We’re hobbyists, too.

User questions & answers

Question: Is it really loud? I already had to get rid of one filter brand because it was so noisy
Answer: As long as you maintain your filter properly, the filter remains reasonably quiet. You do not need to change the impeller as often as one person commented. I have multiple AC 110’s for years and never had to replace the impeller at all. I have been using AquaClear filters for many years. When you maintain your filter, rinse the impeller off. Do not use anything abrasive or it will compromise its proper function by throwing it off balance as it spins during operation.
Question: Will the 110 fit on over the 1-1/4" tank edge of my 70 gal tank
Answer: 13 1/2"L X 6 3/4"W X 9"H with 4" of its width behind the tank.
Question: do you need to replace the filter media in time, and if so, how expensive is the whole kit
Answer: Doesn't anybody read instructions? Change carbon filter after 1 month, change sponge after 2 months, change biofilter (little ceramic donuts) after 3 months. Never change more than one filter at a time which is impossible if you read their system - so at least 2 out of 3 times a month you'd be changing 2 filters. Charcoal filters should be changed monthly - they should also be removed if you are adding medication to the tank or it will soak up/deactivate medications. Personally I think you clean the sponge very well as needed - NO soap- just clean water, same with the donuts. Perhaps having you change so many filters so often is quite the moneymaking deal but not good for fish.
Question: Would the 110 be overkill for a 36 gal goldfish tank? Would the 100 work just as well
Answer: I run (2) 110's on a 90 gallon tank of exotic goldfish. That means I'm running 1000 gallons an hour through the filters on high. I've raised exotic goldfish for 50 years - goldfish are the DIRTIEST fish there are. They produce more ammonia than any other fish. These filters work great. I have some mini's - now called the 20's - which I have had for 35 + years, and they still run as well as the day I bought them. I ONLY USE AquaClear. Best filter out there! They last forever because there are no moving parts to break. There is only a magnetic impeller. In 50 years, I've only had to replace one intake tube that broke, and it was my fault! I tried a canister filter once, and quickly went back to my Hagen AquaClears. Easier to use, and as big as they are, you can use any kind of media in them that you want to use. You cannot go overkill on filtration for goldfish.
