is the cover good for snow

Answer:

Remove the spigot, it should unscrew. Replace it with a higher quality spigot that has a wider orifice or clean the old one out. I found the original spigot not up to the quality of the barrel itself. Mold or debris can easily clog it. It is designed to have the perforated top sit under a rain downspout. Rain easily enters the barrel while large twigs/leaves do not. The only thing I have seen is when there is a downpour the water will overwhelm the grated top and some will be lost over the side of the barrel.

Question:	We will be using this under gravel. What is the estimated life span in this application
Answer:	The lid screws onto the barrel like a jar lid. Centered on the lid is a circular opening approximately 8-10 inches in diameter. This opening has a patch of small-mesh screening that is attached to the lid with several small screws. The screening seems durable, however, there are gaps between the screws, through which some leaf debris can fall into the barrels. I drape a 3-foot square sheet of inexpensive window screen, and secure with a bungee cord, over the lid to prevent leaf debris from getting into the barrel. Our downspout from the roof rain gutter drains directly over the center of the barrel. There is a gap of about 3-4-inches from the bottom of the downspout to the top of the lid. This gap allows the barrel lid to be removed as necessary. I lightly sprayed the threads of the barrel lid with WD40 so that the lid slides on and off easily.

Answer:	I've talked to a local agriculture official about this and they certainly didn't give a knowledgable answer but the feeling is NO don't water plants that younger eat with this water especially if you do what I do which is collect runoff from my roof. Answer:	I've used one of these for the past 8 years and haven't found a fix for the problem you identified. It is a real problem if the rain barrel is sitting in an area where you wouldn't want it to overflow onto the surrounding ground. Additional, related problems are that the overflow pipe is not threaded - solved that problem with a short length of dishwasher hose and a hose clamp. I use a rain chain (instead of a cut-off downspout) to direct flow from the gutters into this barrel. In high winds, the rain blows off the chain and onto the surrounding ground. However, in my experience, these problems are minor and infrequent. I still love this rain barrel and look forward to getting it out of storage each spring. It's attractive and functional, and I've used it a ton over the past 8 years.

Answer:	This is a woven poly fabric and it will absolutely allow air and water thru and almost 100% prevents weed growth. The only caveat is that you should cut it with a heat knife, relatively inexpensive and will prolong the use of this material for many years. Otherwise, since it is woven it will unravel. I have used it for 2 years with excellent results in my vegetable garden and plan to use it around my home as a permanent weed block covered with wood chips. Answer:	This is how I use it. During the sunny hours or when I'm in the pool, I take it off. Remember it's like insulation. Take it off in sun and let the solar energy heat the water. After the sun is gone, cover the pool with this to keep most of your heat gains. Diminishing returns of course, but it works for me.
