12 best jade violin bows

Jade violin bows are a unique type of bow used in the world of stringed instruments, particularly violins. Here's what you need to know about them:

  1. Material: Jade violin bows are distinct in that they are made, at least in part, from jade, a precious gemstone known for its beautiful green color. Jade is considered a luxury material in the construction of violin bows.

  2. Craftsmanship: Crafting a jade violin bow requires exceptional skill and precision. The process involves carefully carving and shaping the jade to create the bow's frog (the part where the player holds the bow) and often incorporating other materials for the bow's shaft and horsehair.

  3. Appearance: Jade violin bows are highly prized for their exquisite appearance. The jade frog is often adorned with intricate carvings and may be set with decorative elements, such as precious stones or metals.

  4. Sound and Playability: While jade is a visually appealing material, it is not commonly used for the entire bow due to its density and weight. Typically, the bow's shaft is made from other materials like wood, carbon fiber, or metal, which provide the necessary flexibility and balance for playing. The use of jade primarily adds aesthetic value rather than altering the bow's sound or playability significantly.

  5. Functionality: Like traditional violin bows, jade violin bows are designed to be functional and produce sound when drawn across the strings of a violin. They play a crucial role in creating the desired tone and expression in violin music.

  6. Rosin: To produce sound with a violin bow, rosin (a hardened tree sap) is applied to the horsehair. Rosin helps the bow grip the strings and produce a clear, resonant sound. The choice of rosin can impact the bow's performance.

  7. Maintenance: Maintaining a jade violin bow is essential to ensure its longevity and performance. Regular rehairing (replacing the horsehair), cleaning, and proper storage are necessary to keep the bow in good condition.

  8. Cost and Rarity: Jade violin bows are considered a luxury item and are relatively rare. Due to the cost of the jade material itself, as well as the craftsmanship involved, they are typically more expensive than traditional wooden or carbon fiber bows.

  9. Collector's Items: Some individuals collect jade violin bows for their artistic and historical value. Antique jade bows, in particular, can be highly sought after by collectors.

  10. Customization: Jade violin bows may be custom-made to cater to a musician's specific preferences in terms of weight, balance, and playability. This customization can add to the uniqueness of the bow.

In summary, jade violin bows are prized for their exceptional aesthetics and craftsmanship, making them a unique and valuable addition to the world of stringed instruments. While they are visually stunning, their primary function remains the same as that of traditional bows: to produce beautiful music on the violin.

User questions & answers

Question: its good for synthetic strings
Answer: This rosin is good for all kind of strings. Including synthetic.
Question: How does the jade l'opera rosin compare to the dark d'addario kaplan artcraft rosin
Answer: To answer my own question... after having used both rosins I personally prefer the Jade. They are both good rosins, but the Jade seems less dusty and provides smoother flow of the bow without being excessively sticky. Personal opinions may vary on this, but having used both, the Jade seems to work a bit better overall. Some folks have tried to use a combination of both. I have experimented with this and found it to work well... a little bit of Kaplan, a little bit of Jade.
Question: Will this turn my bow green
Answer: Someone here has mentioned this, but I've been using this for almost a year and the bow hair is not visibly green at all. It goes on white like any other rosin.
Question: Do you need to use something sharp to break the surface before using it for the first time
Answer: No you don't. Using a sharp object on rosin will cause it to break into pieces and shorten its lifespan. What you do is simply apply the rosin to your bow hair. I find a few full bow strokes over the surface of the rosin is all that is necessary. This particular rosin is Jade green, and over time your bow hair will turn green. Use a washcloth to remove excess rosin from your strings where the bow comes in contact with them. Pinch each string gently with the washcloth between your fingers, and gently clean your strings one at a time. A washcloth can also be used to remove fingerprints from the body of your cello.

User questions & answers

Question: Has anybody done a comparison between jade rosin and hill dark rosin? i have been using hill, but it makes me sneeze and my nose itch. my teacher su
Answer: You need to gently buff the surface of the rosin to “open” it for use. You can do this by gently rubbing a finger nail file on it until the shiny surface goes away, or find a clean piece of cement to very gently rub the smooth surface away. Then wipe it clean with a sry cloth and rosin your strings. Good luck and happy playing!
Question: How do i use this. is the plastic that encases the rosin ok to rub the strings? i cannot remove the plastic covering
Answer: Yes, my daughter's orchestra teacher said it was excellent quality.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this rosin for cellos or for violins
Answer: This is my son's response as he plays violin......this is for violin as rosin for cellos and basses need to be stronger and stickier......
Question: Whats the difference between dark rosin and light rosin
Answer: Dark rosin is stickier and softer. Light rosin is harder and less sticky. They also make a difference in how the instrument will sound.
Question: I live in east Tennessee, so which type of rosen should i use dark or light
Answer: This has more to do with the type of instrument you are playing. Most people prefer the lighter rosin with violin, darker with cello. Viola tends to go either way in my experience.
Question: How do i know which rosin to get? Im new at playing the volin
Answer: Hi, I have a degree is the viola and play professionally in two symphonies. A lot of it which rosin you get will depend on your personal preference, which you’ll develop over time. Do you prefer a rosin with more grip? Dark versus light? Etc. While price does certainly have a relationship to quality, I’ve found it is not necessary to spend $20 on a cake of rosin if you find one that you like and works well with your instrument. That all said, generally dark amber rosin works well for most beginners. You would be fine with this rosin.

User questions & answers

Question: How do I know which size to choose
Answer: I went according to the size of the violin. I wish I had a better answer. Each violin has a size fit for the arm. The bow is the same.
Question: I want to buy a 4/4 green bow. Do you think this bow is suitable for beginners
Answer: I went to the local music store to buy a beginners bow, but it was $50. So, I bought this one for half that, plus shipping. It is the same quality as the one in the music store. The music store had the more expensive ones locked up. The one I had came with a $150 4/4 electric violin, my first. I really liked the one that came with it. This one is ok, but I like my old one a little better. (It is broke in.) Someday I might go look at those the music store locked up.
Question: Why does it take so long to ship? 3-4 months is a little excessive
Answer: Hello, sorry for the inconvenience. In September and October, there were some problems with parcel logistics shipments from China, which caused delays. At present, the logistics time has returned to normal. Parcels shipped from US Amazon warehouses can generally be delivered within 7 days. Please purchase with confidence.
Question: Can this bow be rehaired
Answer: I doubt it. I wanted to rehair my old bow, which also was an inexpensive bow and did research trying to find out who locally rehaired bows. I figured $20-30 for a rehair. It's not. And luthers will not rehair (according to the information I found on several websites) unless it is a very pricey bow. The way they were dodging around the answer I got the feeling that as far as rehairing goes "if you have to ask the price, you can't afford it". In the end, I bought this bow for about what I'd hoped to pay for a rehair INSTEAD of getting a rehair. I also learned in my reading that the cheaper bows are not set up to be rehaired. I'm not sure what the difference is, but the expensive ones have something else done/not done to them to make rehairing easier. However, despite knowing that someday I'll have to get a replacement, I'm quite happy with this bow. It handles well and looks good.

User questions & answers

Question: How long do these last for
Answer: As long as it rosin for a bow, it should be ok.
Question: What difference does color make for rosin
Answer: Some people do and some dont but my daughter takes a little piece of sandpaper or coin to lightly break the glossy seal of the rosin when its new. Tighten your bow and stroke it back and forth across the rosin before playing. You'll have to experiment with your own instrument to figure out exactly how many strokes is enough but if it's a brand new string with no rosin ever applied I'd give it at least 40-50 strokes to start.
Question: How do you apply Rosin
Answer: Good question! Weird
Question: Why are there reviews and photos of hangers, when the product is "rosin
Answer: hi the Violin rosin is pure pine resin.

User questions & answers

Question: would this bow be good for a 16 inch viola
Answer: Yes, my son uses it on his 16” viola.
Question: Is this the correct size bow for a 13 inch viola
Answer: Size bow is a preference. A 13 inch viola is a small viola, so I would say yes, its OK sizewise. I sometimes use this bow on a 15 1/2 inch viola, as well as on 4/4 violins, but I'm a novice so what do I know. It seems to me that the real issue is weight not bow size with fiber bows being much lighter than wood. You need to try playing with a fiber bow and compare with a wood bow and see which you like better. I sometimes have to press down on the strings slightly with my fiber bow but would not with a wood bow. On the other hand, the light weight of a fiber bow makes holding and playing easier, especially for a novice like me.
Question: My son is having to rub a lot of rosin on the hair in order to get any sound, is this normal
Answer: NO ...BUT EVERY TIE YOU PRACTISE PUT A GOOD AMOUNT OF ROSING ON AND EVEN IT OUT ......I THINK THE BOW MAKER SHOULD ALWAYS PEPARE THE HAIRS WITH ENOUGH COLOFONY ........(ROSIN>).....SO THAT ...THIS PROBLEM WOULDN,T OCCUR ........MY ADVICE IS TO GET ASSISTANCE FROM A BOW MAKER ...YOU SHOULD ALWAYS BE ABLE TO GET SOME SOUND ... Answer: yes ! the rosin for violin viola cello bass
Question: Can this be used for an upright bass
Answer: yes! the Rosin can be applied to erhu
Question: can I use this for erhu
Answer: It's possible this is an error, or that Amazon has put shipping this item on the back burner, as they have changed a lot of their protocol in the 10 days. They're prioritizing products they deem essential, and aren't letting sellers ship inventory to the warehouses until 4/6, except in a very few categories. This item, though, is in stock, so it's a mystery.

User questions & answers

Question: Could this be used to add friction to shoelaces to keep them from opening
Answer: The rosin does build up on my strings causing me to have to clean them after each time playing. I think it would work. And they really are not expensive. Great idea! It may get tacky after a while though - like you may have to wash the shoelaces.
