13 best stump removers
Stump removers, also known as stump killers or stump removal chemicals, are products used in gardening and lawn care to facilitate the decomposition or removal of tree stumps. These products are commonly used by homeowners and gardeners who want to get rid of unsightly or obstructive tree stumps left behind after a tree has been cut down or removed. Here's what you should know about stump removers:
Purpose: Stump removers serve the purpose of accelerating the natural decomposition process of a tree stump. They contain active ingredients that help break down the tough wood fibers of the stump, making it easier to remove or allowing it to decompose more quickly.
Active Ingredients: Stump remover products typically contain high concentrations of potassium nitrate (saltpeter) as the active ingredient. Potassium nitrate is a powerful oxidizing agent that promotes the decay of the stump.
Application: To use a stump remover, you will need to drill holes into the top of the stump and around its sides. Then, the stump remover granules or powder are applied into these holes. After adding water to the holes, the potassium nitrate is absorbed into the wood, where it helps speed up decomposition.
Decomposition Time: The time it takes for a stump to fully decompose or become soft enough for easy removal varies depending on factors such as the size of the stump, the type of tree, and environmental conditions. It can take several months to a year or more for the stump to break down completely.
Safety Precautions: When using stump removers, it's important to follow safety instructions provided on the product label. Wear protective gear, avoid contact with the eyes or skin, and keep the product out of reach of children and pets. Additionally, exercise caution when using power tools like drills.
Stump Removal Options: Stump removers are just one method for dealing with tree stumps. Other options include mechanical stump removal using a stump grinder, which physically grinds the stump into small wood chips, or hiring a professional tree removal service to remove the stump entirely.
Environmental Impact: Stump removers can have environmental impacts, so it's essential to use them responsibly. The decomposition process may release nitrogen into the soil, which could affect nearby plants. Some regions have regulations governing the use of stump removers, so it's advisable to check with local authorities.
Alternative Uses: In addition to stump removal, potassium nitrate, the primary ingredient in stump removers, has various other uses, such as in fertilizers, food preservation, and even fireworks production.
Stump removers can be a cost-effective and relatively simple way to address tree stumps in your garden or yard. However, the effectiveness and speed of decomposition can vary, so it's essential to have realistic expectations and be patient throughout the process.Always follow the manufacturer's instructions and safety guidelines when using these products.

Question: | Has anyone used this product on Chinaberry trees (Melia azedarach var. umbraculifera)? Was it effective |
Answer: | We don't have Chinaberry Trees in East Tn. yet. I bought this to kill Poke Weed. Tried it on other weeds, it worked but took over 3 weeks! Not happy with the product, I can make a homemade weed killer better. 1gal. white vinager, 1cup Epson salts and 2T Dawn. Works quicker, I would not buy this product again. I am stuck with 2 gallons of this. DO NOT LIKE! Haven't tried it on Poke Weed, butifit took so longt kill a Standard weed, don't count on it to kill something bigger. |
Question: | Is this Bayer Advanced Brush Killer safe with grass |
Answer: | It says it will temporarily yellow grass and that seems to be true when I used it. Grass hasn't died yet. This is not a total vegetation killer like Roundup, but for broadleaf weeds, vines and trees. |

Stump-Rot 5 Pounds Shipped Priority Mail Using Stump-Rot is an easy way to kill and Rot Away a stump cheaply. When you use the Stump-Rot method it takes several months for the stump to Rot Away Use 100 percent Stump -Rot with no added ingredients, to make sure the land around the stump doesn't get disturbed. Drill holes in the stump. Drill a pattern of holes across the surface of the stump, so the Stump-Rot can be inserted. The holes should be about 1⁄2 to 1 inch wide and at least 8 inches deep, Penetrating deeply will ensure the Stump-Rot saturates the roots below the trunk. If you don't have a drill bit this long, use an ax to chop into the wood and make gouges as deep as you can. If you're working with a stump that has large roots, drill holes in those as well. Pack the holes with Stump-Rot and top them off with wax. Fill up the holes 3/4 full with Stump-Rot. Don't forget the holes you drilled in the roots. Now light a plain, unscented candle and drop wax into the holes to plug them. It's important to make sure the Stump-Rot stays in place, rather than scattering over your yard, since excess Stump-Rot can be harmful to topsoil and the roots of other plants. Cover the stump. Put a plastic tarp, trash bag or another nonporous item over the stump to cover it. It will die more quickly without sunlight and rain to continue nourishing any shoots that come up. After six weeks to several months the stump will die. Check it every once in a while to see how things are progressing. When the stump is dead, it should begin falling apart on its own.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is Tordon used straight out of the bottle, or does it need to be mixed (diluted) with water like a concentrate |
Answer: | Straight out of the bottle on freshly cut stump or sprout. Only need to apply product to outer rings of stump. |
Question: | does the tree have to be cut down first |
Answer: | This is the most powerful tree/scrub/vine killer I have found. A large gum tree was cut down and several trees grew back to medium size. I just took a couple of bottles out and poured it at the base of the trees and it took them out. It just soaks into the ground into the roots. I had a very large crepe myrtle that was essentially a tree. After we cut it down I put it on the stump and I doubt if it will ever come back. I think I have used too much. My yard had become overrun with vines. When I treated the crepe myrtle it killed 1 holly below it and harm the 2 hollies next to it. I was treating some vines in a holly hedge and it hit the hollies hard. They are still alive and I hope they come back. In a different area we we treating vines in a camellia hedge and it took out a few of them. My lesson learned is less is better if there are other plants around that you want to keep. Anyone know how long this stuff lasts before it breaks down? |
Question: | Would this work by drilling holes in the tree with out cutting it down |
Answer: | The Short answer is Yes/No. I have a hill on my property that is full of cottonwood, and no other chemical worked as good as this one. The cottonwood is extremely tough to kill, took a few tries to figure out the best way to use it. I drilled 3/8" holes around each tree at its root ball, drilled as deep as I can that button out the drill bit and fill the hole with this stuff, for large trees, it may take a few months to show signs of dying, just be patient, it will work. I hope this helps. |
Question: | How is this product applied |
Answer: | apply a circle where the bark meets the wood. That is where all the life in a trees trunk is. the vast majority of a trunk is hard wood and is used only for structure so to do more is a waste. I am a forester and have used gallons of tordon it is a very good product. |

Answer: | I don’t know the answer to this question, if it is LG dyer check the inside door of your dryer and it will give you the replacement model number. |
Question: | how long does it take to ship |
Answer: | Mine is LG dryer too and not listed as fit but all dimensions and shape are the same so I bought iy. Luckily it fit perfectly. |
Question: | Is this food grade |
Answer: | Dear Patti, I have a LG Dryer. It works great even though it's not OEM. My one bit of advice to you is, we found we had lint collecting at the bottom of screen area even though we clean filter each and every time. This caused the filter to sit up about 1/4 " catching on clothes and such breaking said filter. We bought a vacuum hose accessory to suck out additional lint and it did the trick about making filter flush again. Good luck |
Question: | What is the purity level |
Answer: | No, it only LG dryers |

User questions & answers
Question: | Would they work on Australia pine stumps |
Answer: | It requires drilling holes into the stump (not the ground.) You must drill several holes up to 12 inches deep, down into the stump and at an angle into the sides of the stump. The stump remover then speeds up the decomposition of the stump. |
Question: | What is the dimension of the nails? i have a diy project to be made. can you help me in this? thanks |
Answer: | It can do both, all it does is speed up decomposition of the stump. |
Question: | Will these nails kill pepper trees |
Answer: | It depends on the hole you drill. I drilled fifty 1/2inch holes in a 30 inch stump. I used 3/4 of the bottle to fill the holes. |
Question: | Can i just drill a large hole and stuff it with old 100% copper pennies |
Answer: | It is 100% potassium nitrate according to the MSDS. But it's probably more like 99.5%. Don't ingest any of it. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be used in a nutrient media for spirulina algae |
Answer: | My husband used it and this is his response. "One bottle goes a long way since it is diluted directly 1:8 in a pump sprayer. It took 2 sprays to kill unwanted growth from a Live Oak, probably due to the amount of rain we get almost everyday. You could probably use a garden hose with a sprayer attachment but I don't feel you have as much control. We were able to direct the spray on the unwanted growth and save my other plants nearby." |
Question: | Can it be used a stump remover |
Answer: | It may, it depends on how established and rampant the problem is. I bought a home with it a few years years worth of growth on it and tried the Bayer with no success. I had to use this: Triclopyr 4E Herbicide 1 Gallon - Replaces Remedy Ultra. It is expensive, but it killed it off where I sprayed two applications (over the course of a month). Ivy is very resilient, so unless you kill all of it, it will slowly creep back in. If you want to try the bayer first because it is inexpensive, I would use it just about undiluted and use a agent like bonide to ensure it sticks. |
Question: | will this burn a stump out of the ground |
Answer: | Add 4 fl. oz.(1/2 cup, 8tbsp) to 1 gallon of water to spray on brush. Brush undiluted to kill Kudzu, Poison Ivy, Poison Oak, Blackberries, and also stumps and root sprouts leaves. |
Question: | How much potassium nitrate is needed to kill yucca roots |
Answer: | It depends! Amazon is selling multiple concentrations of this product all grouped together, and their product descriptions do not make this clear. The "Concentrate" seems to have 8.8% triclopyr, but the "ready to use" gallon and 1.3 gallon sizes are diluted 10 times from that amount...my 1 gallon bottle says 0.8% triclopyr, 99.2% other ingredients. Be careful which one you choose! I thought I was getting the 8.8% and so am sending it back. |

Question: | Has anyone tried this on english ivy |
Question: | Wondering what the mix ratio (ounces per gallon) is required by the concentrate |
Answer: | Add 4 fl. oz.(1/2 cup, 8tbsp) to 1 gallon of water to spray on brush. Brush undiluted to kill Kudzu, Poison Ivy, Poison Oak, Blackberries, and also stumps and root sprouts leaves. |
Question: | what's the percentage of triclopyr |
Answer: | It depends! Amazon is selling multiple concentrations of this product all grouped together, and their product descriptions do not make this clear. The "Concentrate" seems to have 8.8% triclopyr, but the "ready to use" gallon and 1.3 gallon sizes are diluted 10 times from that amount...my 1 gallon bottle says 0.8% triclopyr, 99.2% other ingredients. Be careful which one you choose! I thought I was getting the 8.8% and so am sending it back. |
