12 best felling axes
A felling axe is a type of hand tool that is primarily used for chopping down trees. It is an essential tool for forestry, gardening, and other outdoor activities. Here are some key points about felling axes:
Design: Felling axes have a specific design optimized for cutting down trees. They typically feature a long, straight handle made of wood or fiberglass, which provides leverage and control when swinging the axe. The head of the axe is usually wedge-shaped with a sharp blade on one side.
Blade Shape: The blade of a felling axe is designed to cut deeply into the wood with each swing. It is narrower and more pointed than the blades of splitting axes or hatchets. This design allows for efficient cutting and the removal of tree limbs.
Weight: Felling axes come in various weights, typically ranging from 2 to 5 pounds (0.9 to 2.3 kilograms). The weight of the axe head affects the force and ease of cutting.Heavier axes can cut through larger trees but may require more effort to use.
Handle Length: The length of the handle varies, but it is usually around 28 to 36 inches (71 to 91 centimeters). A longer handle provides greater leverage for powerful swings and helps with precise aiming.
Balance: A well-balanced felling axe is crucial for effective use. The balance point should be near the axe head to ensure control and accuracy during swings.
Hickory Handles: Traditional felling axes often have handles made from hickory wood, known for its strength and shock-absorbing properties. Modern axes may also feature fiberglass handles for durability.
Safety Features: Some felling axes come with safety features like a non-slip grip on the handle to prevent accidents while swinging. Proper safety precautions, such as wearing safety glasses and protective gear, are essential when using any axe.
Tree Felling Technique: Using a felling axe requires skill and knowledge of the correct technique. Users typically make a series of notches and cuts to control the direction of the tree's fall and ensure safety.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance is essential to keep a felling axe in good condition. This includes sharpening the blade, checking for loose handles, and keeping the blade clean and rust-free.
Other Uses: While primarily designed for tree felling, felling axes can also be used for cutting and shaping wood, making them versatile tools for outdoor tasks.
In summary, a felling axe is a specialized hand tool designed for cutting down trees and is a valuable tool for forestry, gardening, and outdoor work. Its design features a sharp, wedge-shaped blade, a long handle for leverage, and various safety considerations to ensure safe and efficient use. Proper maintenance and the use of the correct felling techniques are crucial for safe and effective tree removal.

User questions & answers
Question: | hi,I purchased this axe on June 29,2019 throughAmazon. The head broke off in regular chopping, no abuse..can you process a warranty claim? thanks, gre |
Answer: | Sorry for delay in responding. The handle flares quite a bit at the end? Are you thinking even more? Also, the product no longer comes with a sheath - we had made a very fancy, but ultimately not very durable, sheath out of clear plastic. Instead offer a separate leather sheath with a lifetime guarantee. In the future, may offer a permanent blade guard free with each tool, but still a work in progress. |
Question: | What is the edge length |
Answer: | Hey Amazon Customer - This is not a "Battle Axe" - it is about 2.5 pounds, and stretches about 1.75 feet long - has a good weight, and feels awesome when you hold it, but I have only used it to chop wood, bang in some nails to hold pictures on the wall (I even tried it once to open a beer, but that didn't work well, lol) - Cool to have, but since I am not a trucker, I only have limited uses for it here - you should get it though). |
Question: | Does this item still come with the strike guard? It is mentioned as a problem in the reviews but is not mentioned in the product description |
Answer: | Can throw anything. But seam a bit odd weighted to be a throwing ax |

Helko Werk Traditional Bavarian Woodworker
The Bavarian Woodworker is a full-size German cutting axe, with the heft and power required for heavy felling work. The 3 ½ lb. Rheinland pattern axe head has a sharp, slim, wide-bit blade that will outperform most American pattern axes at cutting work. The pattern is named after Germany's famous Rhein River Valley, a heavily forested region where axes like these have been in use for centuries. This axe is well suited for felling large trees, and can also be used for splitting medium firewood.
Forging
Helko axe heads are individually forged by hand using a drop hammer on open dies. The blacksmith does this work on a drop forge, using tongs to hold and shape the hot steel as a hammer falls repeatedly onto it. The drop hammer runs continuously at remarkable speed, requiring a highly skilled and time-tested smith. The hand-eye coordination and judgment required for this process can only come from years of experience, as every split-second decision ultimately affects the shape and integrity of the final product. Once satisfied with his work, the Smith hammers the Helko Werk crown logo into the cheek. Only minimal supplementary work is performed, allowing each blade to proudly display its forging marks and ensuring that no two pieces are exactly alike. All Helko tools are manufactured in Germany from premium, C50 high grade carbon steel.
Rockwell Hardness
Rockwell hardness is an important factor to consider when evaluating the quality of an axe head. The steel must be tempered just right, without being too soft to hold an edge or hard enough to become brittle. A soft bit will lose its edge quickly, requiring constant sharpening and honing. Conversely, over-hardened bits are liable to chip during normal use. Helko's Master Smiths have cumulatively spent hundreds of years perfecting the hardness and temper of our axes, creating an ideal balance between superior edge holding ability, ease of sharpening, and resistance to chipping. After forging, the heads are hardened and cooled in a continuously running 70°C oil bath. They are then heated to 180-200°C to relieve strain on the surface of the steel and achieve the desired level of hardness. Helko axe and hatchet edges are hardened to approximately 53-56 HRC (Rockwell) up to 30 millimeters from the cutting edge, while the eye is generally left unhardened to prevent cracks in the steel.
Handle Making
The quality of the handle is a significant measure of the tool’s integrity. Helko proudly equips their axes with some of the finest woods available. Our hickory handles are crafted from sustainably sourced Grade A American hickory. Helko promotes environmentally sound, socially beneficial, and economically prosperous management of the world's forests. Our hickory wood is softly air dried over periods of approximately 9 months in order to bring the wood's moisture content down the the proper level. American hickory, growing between 60 and 120 feet high, is a hardwood that maintains remarkable bending properties and flexibility. Hickory is known for its shock absorbing and resistance capabilities. It has a coarse texture and a straight grain, and is highly receptive to oils and finishes. Hickory’s sapwood, or outer layer, is primarily white with shades of brown, while the heartwood is a pale reddish brown.
Leather Sheaths
Our Leather sheaths are made from vegetable tanned, full grain, cowhide leather. The sheaths are made with a heavy duty welt, which is an added strip of leather that rests against the blade, for maximum blade protection. The buckle fasteners are nickel plated with an adjustable strap that will always ensure a tight and snug fit, regardless if the leather stretching over time.
Maintenance & Safety - Take care of your axe, and it will take care of you.

Answer: | I just put it on my food scale and I weighed it as 16.5 ounces, this is for the 3.5 Quart version, others will increase or decrease depending on the size. User questions & answers
Question: | Where can you get a replacement handle to fit this? The ones that I am finding are different lengths than the original or the head size is way off |
Answer: | Sorry to be so long in responding. This is a felling axe and great at it, in part, because the cheek is shaped to allow easy passage through the cut wood. The hollow cheek, however, is the opposite of what you need to split wood. When getting the best, you will want to get a nice splitter to go with the axe. Hope this helps. |
Question: | Does it come with a cover for the blade |
Answer: | We do not offer 2nd grade products so any purchase from our stock is the standard Gransfors production. While we cannot speak for other Amazon Sellers no 2nd grade axes should be offered under this listing as 'New'. It's a different matter if a product is classified as 'Used - As New' or 'Used - Good' or 'Used - Acceptable', etc. but those would not be offered in the Buy Box. Hope this helps. |
Question: | Is it more of a splitting axe or felling axe |
Answer: | Hi Aldo, as much as we would like to answer your needs, I'm afraid it is not feasible in case of FBA Amazon Sellers like us. FBA stands for 'Fulfilled By Amazon', which means that ALL of our Gransfors Bruk stock is shipped to Amazon warehouses where all the orders are fulfilled directly by Amazon and we have no control over that part of fulfilment process. So it is impossible for us to know which actual axe would get picked by Amazon warehouse staff for your order. The same would go for the photos unfortunately. Amazon listings always show representative/general images as they serve ongoing supply of products from many Amazon sellers. They are not individual item listings. Moreover, these listings are property of Amazon and changing/adding description or photos is subject to Amazon's verification process, which takes time and frequently does not get accepted. Ordering Gransfors tools on Amazon - where goods are fulfilled by Amazon and shipped from Amazon warehouse - will always have a random element to it (regardless which FBA supplier you choose). You stand a better chance if you buy from an FBM supplier (Fulfilled by Merchant) and request their attention to detail including perhaps sending you photos of the actual axe they will be sending prior to shipment. But frankly, if perfection is of utmost importance - the only way is to go to a brick-and-mortar store and pick one out of the available selection on the shelf. However, you may find it difficult to achieve due to the current serious supply shortage of Gransfors tools. Of course, you can always take a chance and see if what you receive meets your satisfaction. If not, you can return it to Amazon within 30 days of Amazon Satisfaction Guarantee. I hope this helps. Best regards - Cary |
Question: | Where is it made |
Answer: | You can, any hardware store. The handles are universal except for the brand mark. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this good axe good for medium splitting |
Answer: | The've been made in Maine since the 1860's (at least 10 years ago when I bought mine they were) both the label on the head and the burned in logo on the ash handle state this. The steel is not Chinese junk steel, you can tell by how well it holds its edge. It cost 2-3x as much as the junker Chinese and Mexican axes available. Worth it in my book, after throwing away so many Chinese tools, I realized it's cheaper in the long run to buy American (not to mention supporting honest American businesses/workers) |
Question: | What is the total weight of the axe |
Answer: | No, they are made in Maine. |
Question: | What is the head weight of the ax? What is the length of the ax |
Answer: | If you mean from the heel of the head to the toe of the head, in other words, the length of the cutting edge...approximately 3-1/2" |
Question: | Why should I buy the Kisa model instead of the Torneo model (which is $50 less with the same weight and length |
Answer: | 57 on the Rockwell C scale is what the manufacturer claims for each axe bit edge. Mine came very sharp and has been an excellent tool for the last six years. |

But honestly I would check out the Husqvarna 26" wooden handle axe for about $65. The Husqvarna is actually made by hults bruk for husqvarna and they just stamp their logo on the handle and head. I own the Husqvarna and I bought my dad the hults bruk kisa for Christmas. They are very similar in length, weight, and quality. |

Product features
Helko Werk Classic Expedition
The Expedition is as big as they come, and is the workhorse of the Classic line. This serious working axe is best reserved for the heaviest and most difficult jobs. The size may be intimidating to newcomers, but the Expedition is fully capable of clearing your property and heating your home (provided you have the stamina to put it to use). Its heavy 4 ½ pound head delivers incredible striking power in the hands of a controlled operator.
