14 best vocal mics
Vocal microphones, often referred to as vocal mics, are a specialized type of microphone designed specifically for capturing human voice. Here are some key features and characteristics associated with vocal microphones:
Dynamic Microphone Technology:
- Many vocal mics use dynamic microphone technology. Dynamic microphones are rugged and can handle high sound pressure levels, making them suitable for live performances and recording vocals in various settings.
Cardioid Polar Pattern:
- The cardioid polar pattern is common in vocal microphones. This pattern is most sensitive to sound coming from the front of the microphone, providing good isolation from background noise and feedback rejection.
Durability and Reliability:
- Vocal microphones are often built to be durable and reliable, as they are frequently used in live settings where they may be subject to handling, drops, and other stresses.
Live Performance:
- Vocal microphones are commonly used in live performances on stage. They are ideal for singers, public speakers, and other performers who need a microphone that can handle the dynamics of a live environment.
Frequency Response:
- Vocal mics typically have a tailored frequency response optimized for capturing the human voice. This may involve a slight emphasis in certain frequency ranges to enhance vocal clarity and presence.
Sensitivity:
- Vocal microphones are designed to be sensitive enough to capture the nuances of a vocal performance but not overly sensitive to pick up unwanted ambient noise.
XLR Connectivity:
- Professional-grade vocal microphones usually use XLR connectors for reliable and high-quality audio transmission. XLR connections are standard in the audio industry and are compatible with a wide range of sound systems and audio interfaces.
Pop Filters and Windshields:
- Some vocal microphones come with built-in or attachable pop filters to reduce plosive sounds and windshields to minimize breath noise. These accessories contribute to the overall quality of the recorded or amplified vocals.
Variety of Models:
- There are various models of vocal microphones available from different manufacturers, each with its own sonic characteristics.Popular brands in the vocal microphone category include Shure, Sennheiser, AKG, Audio-Technica, and others.
When choosing a vocal microphone, factors such as the intended use (live performance, studio recording), personal preferences, and budget considerations play a significant role in the selection process. It's common for musicians and sound engineers to experiment with different models to find the one that best suits their needs and complements the vocalist's unique voice.

User questions & answers
Question: | I'm trying to decide between this mike, the SM48 and the PG 58. I would like the best mike for a band, short of the SM |
Answer: | I assume it's for a vocal mike? I do not know about the PG 58, but I can tell you the SM48 is flawless. Absolutely no problems so far. Shures are tanks when it comes to mics. I'd still go with the SM58 if you can get your hands on one cheap. I have never heard of a problem with them. I have seen vocalist throw them to the ground and they still work the same. Hope that helps. |
Question: | Help! Which speaker can connect to this mike |
Answer: | You can plug a Shure SM48 or Shure SM58 to hundreds of speakers, which is why they're the world's most popular, universal microphone (every performing musician I've known and every band carries a reliable and indestructible SM58 mic). It works with "performer's" speakers, which have a built-in amp and pre-amp. Examples are Peavey, Bose, JBL, Electrovoice, etc. I happen to use Roland piano speakers and Roland Cube speakers, but any P.A. system is likely to have the conventional XLR speaker's connection as well as the ¼ inch connection should you have a plug at the end of your cable (the SM58 will take either cable). The problem comes into play if you're limited to an indoor stereo system with "hi-fi speakers," which are not self-powered like musicians-performer's speakers. This is a performer's mic, the one you'll see in use for P.A. speakers in large rooms and big outdoor areas-- and musician's amp-speakers (for all those electric pianos). But it requires an XLR or quarter-inch phone plug connection. If you wish to use it as a USB speaker with your computer, Amazon is showing it with the the Shure X2U adapter ($100), which will convert an XLR cable into a USB cable and provide conveniences like a headphones jack (for no-latency monitoring) and control of volume as well as 48V Phantom Power (which is not needed with the SM48/58, since both are dynamic mics, not condenser mics). If yours is a non-USB condenser mic (eg. ATT2020), the Shure adapter could take the place of a mixing board-interface, saving money and space while giving you all the flexibility you need with a single mic used like a USB accessory to connect to a computer. Blue makes the same for half the price (the Icycle?), but with fewer onboard controls and questionable durability (my Blue mics, incl. the Yeti, are the first to break or wear out). Also, check Planet Waves for some of the plainest, cheapest (less than $10) adapters. |
Question: | What type of connector does it use |
Answer: | The output on the mike is xlr style but if that's a probly you can buy an xlr to 1/4 converter for a few bucks |
Question: | what 10watt will work well with sm48s |
Answer: | sauteed Broccoli de rabe with a side of minced meat couscous |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can we connect this to garage band-MacBook through usb |
Answer: | No, this mic has a standard XLR connection -- meant to connect to your computer via a USB audio card or mixer. |
Question: | I wonder if he has is original and has the stamp of originality |
Answer: | An update to this question based on my experience with the Sennheiser E865 purchased here on Amazon: Mine had the original stamps and markings including the holographics, however Amazon marketplace is not an official distributor so Sennheiser will NOT honor warranty for products purchased through Amazon. |
Question: | These guys work on toms |
Answer: | If you are referring to tom tom drums then I don't see why not. They work really well for vocals both during performance and recording. |
Question: | what would this mic plug into? special type of speaker |
Answer: | This mic uses a standard XLR-type cable. Most (but not all) powered speakers use line-level inputs, not microphone-level. If your speakers happen to have an XLR mic input you're good to go! If not, you'll need a preamplifier such as a mixer with an XLR mic input. Many DJ mixers have a mic input, and any studio or live sound mixer will have mic inputs as well. If your speakers or mixer have a 1/4" mic input, sometimes called a high-Z input, you'll need a female XLR to unbalanced 1/4" male adapter. |

Long associated with its unmistakable sound and unsurpassed reliability, the Shure SM58 Dynamic Vocal Microphone is widely considered the most popular mic in the world. Designed for professional vocal use in sound reinforcement and studio recording, the Shure SM58 Dynamic Vocal Microphone utilizes a highly effective, built-in, spherical filter that minimizes wind and breath pop noise while the cardioid pickup pattern isolates the main sound source and minimizes unwanted background noise. The tailored vocal response on the SM58 is a legendary tone that has become a world standard. Shure SM58 Dynamic Vocal Microphone Features: Smooth, mid-frequency presence rise for world-famous SM58 Mic sound, Uniform cardioid pickup pattern isolates the main sound source, Minimizes background noise, Pneumatic shock-mount system cuts down handling noise, Rugged construction for extreme reliability in demanding applications, Effective, built-in spherical wind and pop filter, 50 to 15,000 Hz frequency response, Supplied with break-resistant stand adapter which rotates 180 degrees, Legendary Shure quality, ruggedness, and reliability, Includes a mic stand adapter and a zippered storage pouch, Proximity Effect: When the sound source is less than 1/4 inch from the microphone, the microphone boosts bass frequencies (by 6 to 10 dB at 100 Hz), creating a warmer and richer bass sound than when farther away. This effect, known as proximity effect, happens only in unidirectional dynamic microphones like the Shure SM58 Vocal Mic. The low-frequency roll-off on the SM58 provides greater control, allowing the user to take full advantage of proximity effect.

User questions & answers
Question: | I apologize for my ignorance. Need for my church. Does this run on battery alone or does it have to be hooked up to something to work |
Answer: | I have the AT2020USB+ version of this mic, it's USB and it has a blue light.I am buying this XLR version to run through my USB interface like my guitar does, so the sound is only coming from one device. |
Question: | How long is the cable that I can get with this mic |
Answer: | Hi,Yes, it has the three-prong XLR connector. I |
Question: | What amplifier or mixer [ $20- $50 ] should i buy which is compatible with sm58 ? need suggestion |
Answer: | If you use a conversion box, yes. This specific model uses an XLR interface because it requires phantom power (three prong, cylindrical shape). You can spend about $100 on a usb conversion box and use this model. I Use an AKAI professional ($250+) which can handle up to 4 mics and 4 outputs ALONG WITH the usb cable. All that said, you can bypass the whole thing and buy an "AT2020 USB". It hooks directly up to the laptop and there's no other equipment to buy. Warning: If you use an AT2020 USB, it will eat up your battery life, you NEED to have your machine plugged in to use it for a long duration. Reason is: the mic takes about 40 volts of power and audio recording and engineering is a processor intensive task (more CPU work = more power being consumed), it also takes a lot of memory so your HDD will be running non stop.If you're using this for fun, get the USB and save the money. If you're looking to get into more serious work, use the XLR as it's compatible with more high end equipment. |
Question: | Feel free to laugh a bit and excuse my ignorance. I am starting voice lessons does this microphone only work with a computer? Or can I hook it up to something different? Ok no more laughing. Thank You |
Answer: | No, it does NOT come with an XLR cable or a stand. |

User questions & answers
Question: | does it work on ps |
Answer: | I will opt for dynamic microphones for choir church band |
Question: | Is there a link for the drivers |
Answer: | No, these microphones operate on the UHF wireless spectrum. For example, Shure H10 Band is 542-572 MHz, which is below the 2.4GHz band. Be sure to check on Shure Wireless Frequency Finder page to see which band works best in your geographical area. Here's the link. https://www.shure.com/en-US/support/tools/frequency-finder |
Question: | Does this product have a mute button |
Answer: | Do you mean a single channel wireless system? The BLX14/CVL? In either case, yes, you will be able to run both systems simultaneously. Each frequency band of the BLX can run numerous transmitters at the same time without interfering with each other. If you also happen to have the BLX14/CVL, you can also purchase the BLX288/PG58 in the same frequency band so that you can have back up transmitters/receivers in case any of them fail. |
Question: | Can I press the on board control to mute the mic |
Answer: | Shure wireless receivers provide both XLR and 1/4" output for each channel. For the case of the dual channel receiver, you will need 2 cables. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this microphone wireless |
Answer: | This one is not wireless You need to purchase a mic cable too It is not included They make a wireless version but this is not it |
Question: | Can anyone give a realistic assessment of how much better it is at resisting feedback than other mics? If not, any recommendations for one that does |
Answer: | I haven't found it to be any better or worse at resisting feedback. The SM58 Beta is better than the SM58 in a few areas, but I haven't noticed it being better in this specific regard. |
Question: | Does this mic need phantom power of 48V |
Answer: | Hello, This microphone does not require phantom power, as it is dynamic.Phantom power is required for condenser microphones, such as Shure Beta 87A. |
Question: | Is this a real Beta 58 or is it the ripoff from China |
Answer: | Good question. I can only tell you that the one I received is real. The mesh grill on the AUTHENTIC SHURE mic almost looks "spider web" like. The links are intertwined - the FAKE SHURE has a regular metal screen. The AUTHENTIC SHURE mic has a DEEP BLUE colored ring (not DARK BLUE!) around the grill. The FAKE one has like a "SKY BLUE" Also, at the BOTTOM of the mic, where the XLR pins are, the REAL SHURE mic will have the pins numbered "1, 2 and 3" and ALSO have the SHURE LOGO embossed on the base by the pins. The FAKE MICS will NOT. Hope this info HELPS. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the difference between the sm58 and the pga58? I am a moble dj and karaoke host. I have customers that are really particular about the sound |
Answer: | The PGA58 is the cheap version of the SM58. The SM58 will sound a little better. If you're not super sensitive to sound then the PGA58 will likely work just fine. If I were a DJ I would do the SM58 and then just have a mixer to turn the mic off if need be. PGA58 has an ON/OFF switch on it so it can be turned off by accident. But, some folks want a power switch on the mic. |
Question: | Does this mic have an internal shock mount |
Answer: | All mics have some internal shock mount. But depending on your use, it may not be adequate. This mic is average noise for what is considered a handheld mic. |
Question: | Do i need xlr male to female or male to male |
Answer: | The microphone uses a standard XLR and has three prongs. If you order a cord with the microphone they will give you a choice of XLR or 1/4", this choice pertains to the end that does not plug into the microphone. Personnaly I selected the 1/4" so I could plug it into my amplifier (my amp has two inputs) while practicing. The 1/4" will also plug into our group's PA system becasue the PA has a plug that accepts either 1/4" or XLR. Saying all that, you need a cord with a female XLR to plug into the microphone's male XLR and the other end will be either a male 1/4" or male XLR to plug into whatever you are using to amplify your voice. |
Question: | Can you plug in this mic to an amp? My previous mic plug had a long silver end on it but this one doesn't have one |
Answer: | The cable that comes with it is XLR to XLR, so no, it won't plug into the amp without a 1/4" connector. Cable is not permanently attached to the mic, and can be changed to an XLR TO 1/4" type cable. The mic is incredible and worth every penny. |

Answer: | What do you mean by machine? You can order this mike with a XLR to XLR cable or a XLR to QTR cable. The diference between the XLR and the QTR terminal is the connector. The XLR is a 3 prom jack and the QTR is a 1/4" jack, similar to the 1/8" or 3.5mm jack you use in you cel phone or most of the stereos. If you have a regular 3.5mm input in your stereo, mixer or amplifyer yiu need to buy this mike with a XLR to QTR cable and a Reduction Jack from 1/4" Female to 1/8" Male. All the mikes terminal are XLR Female,, so the difference is at the other end of the cable, You either use a XLR terminal/jack or a 1/4" jack. |
Question: | What is the difference between pga48-qtr and pga48-xlr |
Answer: | the qtr has a 1/4" cable, the XLR has an xlr cable. We have a package with stand: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B017RLEPZ0/ref=olp_product_details?_encoding=UTF8&me= or the xlr version: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B072DX341N/ref=olp_product_details?_encoding=UTF8&me= |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this amplify the voice if it is not plugged into an amp. I was hoping to be able to plug into an iTouch or laptop |
Answer: | It does not need a battery, but you do need to connect it to an amplifier that has a mic XLR connection. Mostly this would be a separate pre-amp which is then connected to a larger console or amplifier system, though some systems combines both. |
Question: | do u need a wire to use this |
Answer: | If the official Shure part number SM58-CN is selected, the "CN" means a 25' XLR microphone cable will be included. Other variants include SM58S which is microphone with an on/off switch, SM58-LC which is microphone only with no cable. |
Question: | Would this be okay for a 6 yr old? She loves singing and wants a microphone for her birthday |
Answer: | There are too many questions to be answered here. Are your speakers powered or non-active? How many mics are you running? Any other systems involved, like instruments, computers, ipods etc? Are you looking for built in EFX? Although my first amp was a Pyle 3000W for $100 and I used a cheap Behringer 4 bus mixer, I have moved on from that purchase. Best advise I can give someone, is to buy a book or video on live sound and mixing, it will save you time, heartaches and maybe even money. |
Question: | does it work with a computer |
Answer: | I'd like to correct a statement that's been made about the SM-58, which is the most popular, universal "performer's mic," found in every band that can afford it and serving as the White House microphone for heads of state. It's a "dynamic" rather than a "condenser mic," which means it's durable, tough, long-lasting, made to take abuse. But it's not the preferred microphone in the recording studio, which is where the more sensitive, nuanced condenser microphone shines (but don't toss it in a bag and "take it on the road"). Condenser mics require more power than dynamic mics, and that power is called "phantom power," which is found in most mixing boards and in many amps--and in this handy adapter. But you do NOT require Phantom Power for an XLR connection: you require it for a CONDENSER MIC. And since the popular SM58 is a DYNAMIC MIC, the Phantom Power is wasted, a needless add-on. If you want to convert your XLR to USB (or to a phone plug), there are many adapters and cables for $10 that will do the trick You certainly don't need to invest a hundred in the pictured adapter--that's sheer "overkill. It's a bit of a mystery why sellers are showing the SM58 with a Phantom-Powered Adapter for condenser mics. You may be wasting $100 on one or the other of these incompatible devices. |

Answer: | Yes it can. The only bad thing about this mic is it is made of plastic. But over all it sounds great. |
Question: | IS this made of cheap plastic that will strip easily |

Answer: | It doesn't come with a stand, but you can use a regular stand |
Question: | Can we plug the mic to a computer |
Answer: | Yeah my brother has this paired with the focusrite solo, Which has a usb connector you put into your pc. You plug your xlr into it and con monitor it directly with gain, and it's good if you plan on upgrading from this mic in the future. |

Question: | I want to buy this article in colombia. is the price for this mic (including shipping price) all that i have to pay? or will i require to pay more |
Answer: | The MV88 used with the Shure Motiv App will handle SPLs of up to 120 dB. That's very loud and certainly in the hearing damaging range. The App compressor can keep the recording software from clipping if you start recording with too high a gain setting, but cannot keep the mic itself from clipping if you exceed 120 dB SPL. The Motiv App allows for 37dB of gain adjustment, and for very loud SPLs can be set for "0dB" gain. I've recorded a full symphony orchestra peaking at 103 dB SPL up close with the gain set to 20dB and the peaks hit no higher than -3 dB digitally with no limiting. However, some heavy metal bands can produce very dangerous SPLs that do exceed 120 dB close to their speakers, so limiter or not, it is possible to overdrive the MV88. |

User questions & answers
Question: | anyone use this for recording singing vocals? thanks |
Answer: | Not this one specifically, but I have regularly used large diaphragm DYNAMIC mics much like this one (actually a Shure SM7b) and they work fine on vocals. Its a fairly flat frequency response with a slight bump in the upper midrange, and the proximity effect helps beef up thin sounding vocals. So yes, a quote-unquote "broadcast mic" can work just as well for singing as for spoken word. Don't let anyone tell you different. |
Question: | Does this work with behringer xenyx x1204usb? or additional equipments are required |
Answer: | It works. You just need a XLR mic cable and you are good to go (it is not included). |
Question: | Is it with a USB attachement |
Answer: | Here's short run down I just noticed today. I'm in the market for a Rode Mic so I did some digging. Rode NT-USB USB ($169)Rode PodCaster USB Dynamic Microphone (USB $230)Rode ProCaster Broadcast Dynamic Vocal Microphone XLR ($230)Rode BroadCaster Studio Condenser Microphone XLR ($400)Fist two are USB. Last two are XLR. |
Question: | Can this be placed on the center of a small table and used by two or three speakers (for a podcast |
Answer: | As some of the others have mentioned, this mic is not what you are looking for but the Blue Yeti is perfect for your needs. The internet is filled with mixed reviews about the Blue Yeti but as someone who has nearly 30 years of experience as an audio engineer, I can tell you that it's a fabulous mic, especially for your particular application. I currently record multi-person podcasts daily using the Yeti in omni mode while hanging overhead for multiple speakers/conversational situations, a Rode Podcaster as the daily driver for one of the on-air personalities and a Shure SM7B for another on-air personality and I'm extremely happy with the performance of all three mics. I also use an Audio Technica AT2020 sometimes when we have an additional guest in the studio. One thing to keep in mind - you will need to understand your workstation and have a plan on how to set up your gear, as the Yeti is a USB mic (unless you get the pro model which takes both XLR and USB) while the AT2020 is an XLR and so on... you get the idea. With these two different formats I often see people purchasing both kinds without first figuring out how they are going to get all these mics to play nicely with one another. Do your homework on how you're going to hook everything up and you should be just fine. Good luck! |
