User questions & answers
Question: | Can i purchase more than one of these mics, connect to a usb hub, and have them strategically placed throughout a large room |
Answer: | Anything is possible, it is just a matter of learning how to do it. Firstly, you would want a powered hub. And a good one. There are reports of these mics not liking hubs. But its probably more to do with people trying to use cheap unpowered hubs than the hub itself. Second, Skype/teams/zoom are going to want you to select an audio source, they don't have a built in mixer. To solve this you would need to make the software think it's all just one mic. You could use obs (open broadcaster) and use it's built in mixer, and use ndi to output to teams/Skype/zoom. It wouldn't be intuitive, but it would work. Another option, which might be easier to understand would be to buy the xlr versions of this mic, plug them into a hardware usb mixer (like the yamaha mg10xu or the behringer flow 8, both have 4 xlr inputs for 4 separate mics), and then plug the mixer into the computer and use that as your audio source. The software one is free, but less intuitive, the hardware one is easier but costs money. Essentially, you're doing the same thing either way, just one in software and one in hardware. |
Question: | Is this only a microphone or does it act as a speaker, as well? I know there's a headphone jack, but can you use it w/o plugging in external speakers |
Answer: | You can plug the headphone jack into external powered speakers. If it's an unpowered speaker, you must go through an amplifier first. |
Question: | What mic would work better for a room filled with people? I want to mic for skype or hangout for a workshop of 10-30 people |
Answer: | The MXL AC404 works very well for us. It is utilised in a conference room that sits 12 people. The person seated furthest from the mic (at one end of the room) can be heard very well by the other party in the video conference. The mic picks up sounds from outside the room too but I cannot comment if it will be effective in a room for 30 pax. You will probably need a couple of mics for that. |
Question: | One reviewer claimed that he could not use this product with a USB hub. If this is true, can it be used with a simple USB male-female extension cable |
Answer: | It could be that the reviewer's particular USB hub could not provide enough amperage to power the mic. Not all USB hubs are equal in this regard: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB_hub#Power |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will a samson mk-10 mic stand hold this microphone? if not, can someone tell me where to get the correct size mic clip |
Answer: | The microphone comes with a shock mount and mic clip that will both fit any standard microphone stand including your Samson. |
Question: | Is it normal for this mic to have exposed wiring? I mean the bottom cap in the mic to come off easily |
Answer: | Not normal. Only if you unscrew and remove the bottom of the microphone would you see the wires going from the XLR jack onto the circuit board. If they are hanging out with the bottom screwed on, I would imaging they might have been damaged from being smashed. In that case I would return/exchange the microphone. If the wires aren't damaged, I'd just push them inside the microphone and screw the bottom piece back on securely. Should be all good. |
Question: | Which one of these allow me to connect to a computer via usb? The midnight blue or the champagne |
Answer: | You need a audio interface and xlr cable for this microphone |
Question: | I want to use this mic for an instrument, would it work OK |
Answer: | Actually 3/4" is not large - and it's the same sensor that's in the 991 stick mic. It is an ideal mic for acoustic instruments - which means a totally flat response in the mid range frequencies of which vocal is only an example. Let that be your guide. I have no experience with any other use. Same is true for the stick mic. |

Question: | Does this mic have any problems as time pass |
Answer: | No problems. It still sounds great! |
Question: | Anyone paired this with a TASCAM US 16x08? How do these do for drum overhead or room mics? Anyone tried them on heavy metal vocals |
Answer: | I've used this mic through numerous mic pres with excellent results so I see no reason why it wouldn't pair well with the TASCAM.I have used a pair of these for drum overheads (as well as room mics) and really loved the results.I've tracked heavy metal style vocals through it before and while there could arguably be better mic choices, what it gave me was a "you're in the room with this guy" vibe that really worked.Hope this helps and sorry to be so long getting to the party. |
Question: | Is this better than the 2001? Or simliar |
Answer: | It's a similar model but with better specifications. More sensivity and more neutral. Excellent with a lamp preamp. It's a real good choice ! |

MXL 2003A
Another MXL winner that puts pricier mics to shame, the MXL 2003A is a go-to tool for those critical recording applications like acoustic guitar, where clarity, presence, and detail are deal breakers. A switch selectable bass cut and -10 dB pad provide additional recording options, and a transformerless FET preamp will please the pickiest engineers with its smooth and even response. This microphone has a 3-micron gold-sputtered diaphragm and a cardioid pickup pattern. Large capsule condensers are very sensitive, readily revealing very subtle sonic details. They also tend to pick up sounds outside the pattern more than some designs, which can lead to powerful feedback if you are not careful. MXL strongly advises experimentation with placement and isolation requirements with the gain initially set low to avoid equipment (and hearing) damage.
MXL is a leading manufacturer of high performance audio products for professionals and recording enthusiasts around the world. MXL’s award-winning solutions continue to astound today’s top artists, engineers, professional producers, and businesses that require sonic perfection on stage, in the studio, and in the conference room.

User questions & answers
Question: | can conect this mirophone to me pc with xlr to 3.5mm adapter or need a mixer or interface |
Answer: | You could, but it likely wouldn't sound great. If you're buying a microphone like this, you'd really want to have some sort of interface with a decent mic preamp built in. Something like the Focusrite Scarlett Solo, or the ART USB Mix Project Series Mixer would do the trick. You'd be much, much happier with the results if you went through something like that. Most built in 3.5mm connectors on computers are connected to very bad preamps and very bad converters that are usually noisy and sound pretty terrible. |
Question: | If one put this mic on a desk stand, would it pick you up good sitting up without having to lean in to it? (think johnny carson or david letterman |
Answer: | If you're looking at this mic thinking about podcasting or youtube this mic will work fine and its dynamic nature should help tame room noise. But, dynamic mics like to be used close to the source so you'd be better off with it on a boom so you can keep it close to your mouth. The mics on the desk of most talk show host are props. The host and guest are recorded by techs using mics on boom poles who can change the position when people move around. Watch how Joe Rogan, Howard Stern, ect., use their mics in studio to get an idea. |
Question: | What is the weight of this mic |
Answer: | It's very light, I had one for about a week before I sold it to the next poor fool. This mic sounds pretty terrible. You want a flashy stage mic, just spend that little bit more and get yourself one of the Shure 55 models. |
Question: | Would this be good for twitch streaming for gaming? would be using it with a goxlr mini |
Answer: | It would. However as a directional mike it might not produce as well as the typical headset mike. Assuming the player is moving a lot. We bought 2 for our radio station and use them for vocal performances. Sounds beautiful. Full & Rich and looks great! |
