14 best acoustic guitar steel strings
Acoustic guitar steel strings are a crucial component of an acoustic guitar setup. They play a significant role in determining the tone, playability, and overall sound of the instrument. Here's what you need to know about acoustic guitar steel strings in the context of musical instruments and accessories:
Material Composition: Acoustic guitar steel strings are typically made of high-quality steel alloys. These alloys are known for their durability, longevity, and ability to produce bright and articulate tones. Common steel string materials include phosphor bronze and 80/20 bronze, each offering its unique tonal characteristics.
String Gauges: Acoustic guitar steel strings come in various thicknesses or gauges. The gauge of a string refers to its diameter. Common string gauge categories include light, medium, and heavy. Lighter gauges tend to be easier on the fingers and provide a brighter tone, while heavier gauges produce a fuller, warmer sound but require more finger strength to play.
Tone and Sound: The choice of steel string gauge significantly impacts the guitar's tone. Lighter gauge strings produce a brighter and crisper sound with less sustain, while heavier gauges offer a richer, deeper tone with more sustain.Musicians often select strings based on their preferred playing style and the tonal characteristics they desire.
Coating: Some steel strings are coated with a thin layer of polymer or other materials to enhance their durability and extend their lifespan. Coated strings are less prone to corrosion and tend to maintain their brightness longer than uncoated strings.
String Winding: Steel strings may have different winding patterns, such as roundwound or flatwound. Roundwound strings have a textured surface and are more common, providing a brighter and more articulate sound. Flatwound strings have a smoother surface and offer a mellower, vintage tone.
Changing Strings: It's essential to change acoustic guitar steel strings periodically to maintain the guitar's sound quality. Old strings can sound dull and may affect intonation. The frequency of string changes depends on how often you play and your string care routine.
String Brands: Numerous reputable manufacturers produce high-quality acoustic guitar steel strings, including D'Addario, Ernie Ball, Martin, Elixir, and more. Different brands may offer strings with unique characteristics and tonal qualities.
String Tension: The combined tension of all the strings on an acoustic guitar affects its playability and feel. Higher tension strings can provide better volume and projection but may be harder to press down. Lower tension strings can be more comfortable for fingerpicking but may produce less volume.
In summary, acoustic guitar steel strings are essential accessories for acoustic guitar players. The choice of string material, gauge, and coating can significantly impact the guitar's tone and playability, allowing musicians to tailor their instrument's sound to their preferences and style of play. Proper maintenance and regular string changes are key to ensuring the best possible sound from your acoustic guitar.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can these be used safely on a Martin backpack guitar |
Answer: | I have used them on a Martin DX 1..sounds good and plays well |
Question: | I have an acoustic wide neck guitar with nylon strings. Can I put metal strings on my guitar? They are more bright |
Answer: | Sounds like your "acoustic wide neck guitar" is a classical guitar. If so, you should stick with nylon. There are lots of different brands and types of nylon strings. If you are not liking the sound you are getting, try a different brand and weight. If you want to change to steel strings, you should get a guitar intended to use steel strings. Just FYI, these silk and steel are pretty mellow ("warm"). If you want a "brighter" sound, you should try a different string on a guitar intended to use steel strings. |
Question: | Does this come with all different strings |
Answer: | Yes, it is a complete set of all six strings. |
Question: | Are these strings for folk/classical or acoustic guitars I've never heard of silk and steel before just nylon and steel strings separately |
Answer: | They are intended for steel-strung guitars. They should work fine on acoustical, acoustical-electric, or even electric guitars. I am using these on all of my guitars. They are called "Silk & Steel" as the outer layer is a combination of a silk & steel interwinding over a steel core. Obviously the unwrapped strings are steel only. These strings produce a mellow tone and I also like the fact that they are silver-colored instead of brass. The silk makes them a bit easier on your fingers and quieter when sliding your fingers. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Do these work with first act acoustic guitars |
Answer: | They should work with most guitars. My guess is they will be way too long, but can be cut down. Make sure you do it after stringing and cut both wires on the wound strings so they don't unravel.I had to cut off about 8 inches on my acoustic Seagull. |
Question: | Have a EJ200 Epiphone. Would like to replace strings. What type of D'Addario strings do I use |
Answer: | I have a 45 year old Martin d-28 I use the extra light strings EJ 15 3 Dbecause I like to fingerpickthey have a very good warm soundif your guitar is fairly new try the light gauge strings they sound very good too and you can buy 3 packs for under $15 at Amazon. D'Addario makes a good string and I find they last a long time. I highly recommend! |
Question: | I bought these for my son and the first two strings broke when he was putting them on. We are on the third set in twenty minutes |
Answer: | When you put on a string, you have to allow enough slack for the string to coil around the tuner post. Feed the string through and leave enough slack so you can pull the string about 4 inches above the fret board and then slowly wind it up and as it tightens, pause once in a while let the string stretch. Some strings can take a day to stretch, some don't. Be patient. Good luck...but if you don't leave slack for coiling strings will break. |
Question: | So does this come with all 6 strings? Im completely new to guitars |
Answer: | Yes, this is a full set.Specifically this is a set of 3. If you want just one select the 1 pack. (I tried to include a link but Amazon defaults it to the 3 pack for some reason)It is possible to look up and find individual strings, but honestly that ends up being more difficult in my opinion and for the cost you might as well grab a set.I am fairly new to guitars as well, so let me just take a moment to say these strings are highly recommended. Great choice. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I put nylon strings on a guitar that use to have metal |
Answer: | You can. You will need to do a neck adjustment to makeup for the lower tension. These strings are metal that the question was asked under. |
Question: | Are the first 3 strings nylon |
Answer: | No, they are plain steel as in other acoustic sets. Nylon would only be found on classical sets. |
Question: | What would be the best string size to use on a used acoustic guitar to be played by a 9 year old boy |
Answer: | The lighter the guage...the easier to bend. The easier to bend...the harder to control. Since its an acoustic guitar, i would start with 10's ...try .10 to .46. Thats a pretty standard guage. He should be able to tell if he would like a smaller guage in which case go to 9's. Better yet....take him to a guitar shop and let him try some different guage strings. If hes just strumming, he may like the 10's. When hes ready for more sophisticated play, and until his hands get larger and stronger, he may need the 9's. Happy playing! |
Question: | What would be the downside of putting these strings on an old classical guitar I bought for $25. Would it cause the neck to bow |
Answer: | I have never had a neck bow on me but I feel it is safer to go no smaller than .010 on acoustic guitars. One of my acoustics has delicate, thin wood and is doing fine with these strings. You'll be OK. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is it high or low action |
Answer: | In my opinion it's extremely HIGH. It was so high that I took it to my guitar luthier who said " it's unplayable like that" He had to shave off a little of the bridge, adjust the Nut grooves and dress a couple of high frets at the 12th to get it in reasonable shape and for myself to be happy with it. The bass E is 2mm above the 12th fret now so within bounds. She plays and sounds okay but it's not my favourite guitar by a long chalk to be honest. Spends more time in its case! |
Question: | Is it comfortable |
Answer: | This was my first guitar. I found it very comfortable but then I bought a Taylor mini. Each has its place I still play then both |
Question: | What is the nut width? (inches |
Answer: | 1.75" -Jesus The Music Store |
Question: | my old yamaha drives me nuts, because of the buzz sounds with the strings. If I buy this one will it buzz |
Answer: | One of the best options is to use the buzz in your style. No doubt it’s not an all out buzz all of the time. So incorporate it as an emphasis at certain pints. Old phenomenal guitarists played what they had, got really good at it and used funky quirks on their guitar to add some flavor. The other option. Play each string at each fret, isolate the buzz and decide what the next option is. If the guitar has been climate controlled and is in a steady state, you may find sanding the buzzing fret down (just on the string that buzzes), with the fretboard well protected with a high grit paper, the right answer. This could also be the beginning of chasing the buzz down the neck to the next fret. It could be a nut or bridge adjustment that’s the answer. Truss rod is not where the adjustments usually start. My point, it comes down to a proficient luthier or someone who might be willing to take the time to get everything right. Cheap guitars can sometimes sound great after a $1000 in labor or equivalent time has been invested. Guitars aren’t a set it and forget it object. Nature works against them and time can be an enemy. If you’re really serious, you’ll take it somewhere regularly to have it tweaked to fight the elements working against it. Anyway, Americans spend $1,000s on frivolous hobbies. This is a pretty cheap one if you start with a decently constructed guitar and then just figure you’ll care for it over the years. Either learn to do the maintenance yourself or pay someone whose invested their time to learn it... or barter. One cool thing if you learn the craft, you can find old guitars and go through them, make the adjustments and get some very unique stuff that’s cool in its own way. Yamaha is a solid built instrument —from their drums to guitars to pianos. A buzz is definitely no reason to avoid the brand. Otherwise, every brand and nearly every model will be a problem at some time or other. |

Question: | Is this fit a huntington acustical guitar long neck 41 inches |
Answer: | Maybe not. The strings fit just enough for a standard acoustic. |
Question: | How long are the strings |
Answer: | They are just long enough to get on the post. I was honestly baffled at how little slack there was. |
Product description
An ultra-fine layer of EXP Coating is bonded to the 80/20 bronze wrap wire which is then wound onto the hex-shaped core wire. The result is a built-in barrier against the corrosion and wear that can quickly sap the life out of your strings and your sound . EXP 80/20 Bronze strings have a natural round wound feel and extra-bright tone that lasts three to four times longer than traditional guitar strings.

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the difference in sound between an 80/20 and phosphor bronze please? Which is warmer, less bright |
Answer: | The 80/20 has a somewhat brighter sound, that in my mind mellows after a week or so on the guitar to a more pleasing sound on my Martin 000-28 than the phospher-bronze strings, which to my ear always have a somewhat dull (vs. warm) sound. That said, I have switched to using light gauge Gore Elixir Nanoweb 80/20 bronze acoustic guitar strings (http://www.amazon.com/Elixir-Nanoweb-Bronze-Acoustic-Strings/dp/B0002E1O2C), as they have the pleasing sound I am looking for right out of the box, and they keep quality tone 2-3 times longer than the D'Addario strings. I find that the Elixir strings are worth the extra money. |
Question: | What is the difference between exp11 and exp16 ? Is this the amount of coating |
Answer: | EXP16 is phosphor bronze, EXP11 is 80/20. The coating and gauges are the same on both sets. The only difference is the composition of the winding on the strings. |
Question: | Whats the longest amount of time you've played before the coated EXP 80/20 Lights went dull and needed to be replaced |
Answer: | Coated strings last 2-3x longer with great tone; anyone who disagrees has never played coated strings. I use coated D'Addarios for my acoustics and electrics. They're superior to everything else. Best advice I can give (which you will find repeated everywhere) is the more you play, the more you should change your strings. And my take on this is: if you're uninspired by your instrument, it's time to change your strings. No matter what guitar you play, you'll never be disappointed with the results. Pick on. |
Question: | Will the "light 12-53" works perfect on yamaha fs |
Answer: | I do not own any Yamaha guitars, but I do use them on both Blueridge @ Guild / both accoustic, electric. So if you don't need louder volume they are good strings. Martin sells a 92/8 phosphorus bronze, my pick for strictly accoustic playing. |

Product description
Prolong your tone with the same acoustic guitar strings that experienced players worldwide trust to keep their incredible tone longer than any other string available. Unlike other string brands, Elixir Strings coats the whole string. This protects not only the outer string surface but also the gaps between the windings where common tone-deadening gunk typically builds up in other brands’ coated and uncoated guitar strings. Anti-Rust Plating on plain steel strings ensures longer tone life for the entire set. Who wouldn’t love more quality playing time between the hassle and cost of string changes? Premium by design, these acoustic strings constructed with 80/20 (80% copper, 20% zinc) bronze wrap wire boast a crisp, bright tone with an expressive, vibrant presence. Compared to our original POLYWEB Coating, the ultra-thin NANOWEB Coating allows a more traditionally textured, “uncoated” feel. For a slicker, gentler feel, try the original POLYWEB Coating on our 80/20 Bronze Acoustic Strings, which also feature a more robust and rounded tone. For more of a balance between bold and bright, our Phosphor Bronze Acoustic Guitar Strings with NANOWEB Coating deliver full-bodied tone and sparkling high-end clarity alongside the same traditional feel as these 80/20 bronze strings. Of course, the kind of string you play is all a matter of personal preference. Not sure what tone or feel is right for you? User questions & answers
Question: | What is the difference between poly web and nano web? Which is warmer, less bright |
Answer: | I've tried both, and I'd say the polyweb coated strings are less bright. I prefer a brighter sound so I go with the nanoweb. |
Question: | Why do I pay for amazon prime to get 3 day expedited shipping order these strings and ten days later no strings |
Answer: | Because Jeff Bezo's needs money to pay for his expensive divorce. |
Question: | I own a Wasburn D10N guitar and can't decide between the Elixir Light Nanoweb 80/20 Bronze and Phosphor bronze. Any suggestions - spruce top |
Answer: | I have used almost every brand of strings on my various Martin acoustics. Elixirs stand above the crowd in terms of tone quality. 80/20 bronze bring out the best but need changing about every 2-3 months max for a daily player. Phosphor-bronze have less nuanced tone but still excellent, and seem to last almost twice as long. Recommend 80/20 for the regular player who wants the most "detailed" tone, P-B for more occasional playing and longer life. Discerning players will be happy with either in any case. |
Question: | What is the difference in sound between the 80/20s and the Phosphor Bronze nano web? I enjoy ease of fingering, warm sound, projection. Which one |
Answer: | 80/20s bronze will initially be brighter. Phosphor bronzes will be warmer. 80/20s become warmer after use more quickly and may become undesirable to use more quickly because the strings are no longer giving you the desired tone you started with. Phosphor bronzes hold their initial tone longer, but are by design, warmer. Projection (beyond gauge of the strings~heavy vs medium vs light vs extralight) and ease of fingering have much more to do with the guitar you're using, style of playing (use of a pick/how hard you're strumming/finger-picking), and setup (tuning~you drop down a half a step, the strings will have less tension and will be easier to bend). |

Less Sweat, Debris, And Finger Squeak
The way your strings sound has a lot to do with what you normally can’t see. While both of our patented coatings reduce noisy finger squeak, they also cut down on a large number of other pesky annoyances common to your average uncoated string. Sweat, skin, dirt, and even air, for example, can do a lot of damage to your strings. And if you live in a hot, humid area, the moisture in the atmosphere can wreak total havoc on your strings’ tone life. But with Elixir Strings, you’re getting world-class protection that’s engineered to endure.
Polyweb Coating Vs NANOWEB Coating
POLYWEB Coating was our first coated string innovation all the way back in the '90s. It tends to warm and mellow the string’s tone and has a fast, slick feel that’s gentle on the fingers, which lets players keep jamming without the strings getting in the way. As a response to players who said they prefer a more traditional feel, NANOWEB Coating was then designed. This ultra-thin coating allows a brighter, crisper tone while offering the same amount of tone-life protection as its predecessor.
Coated Like No Other
Unlike other string brands, Elixir Strings coats the whole string. This protects not only the outer string surface but also the gaps between the windings where common tone-deadening gunk typically builds up in other brands’ coated and uncoated guitar strings. That’s why Elixir strings retain their tone longer than any other brand’s string, coated or uncoated. Simply put, build-up and corrosion kill your tone, and Elixir strings protect against elements that cause build-up and corrosion. All while sounding exactly how you’d expect a premium set of strings to sound.
Anti-Rust Plating
Corrosion protection between wrap wire windings is all well and good, but you may be asking yourself, 'What about the strings that don’t have a wrap wire?' And we’re proud to tell you, don’t worry—we’ve got those covered too. Literally. With our signature Anti-Rust Plating, even your plain steel strings defy the elements. This ensures longer tone life not just for your coated wound strings, but for your entire set. When we say you’ll have more gigging, jamming, touring, or practice time between string changes, we mean it.

User questions & answers
Question: | does it come with the guitar |
Answer: | Yes, it includes the guitar, the bag, extra strings, a few picks, an electronic tuner, a capo, and a cloth to clean the guitar. |
Question: | Viene la guitarra |
Answer: | Seguro que sí |
Question: | Solo es el puro kit o tambien incluye la guitarra |
Answer: | Incluye tambien guitarra. |
Question: | How wide is the fret board? I previously had a guitar where my fingertips were too large for how close together the strings were |
Answer: | The neck width is pretty the same as you will find on the majority of 6 string steel string guitars. If you are looking for a wider neck I would suggest looking at a classical guitar. The necks on those are typically wider and the nylon strings will be less painfull to your fingertips |

User questions & answers
Question: | Would you recommend this for a Taylor 816ce |
Answer: | I have a 614ce and these are perfect! The custom lights (.11) are also acceptable but you may lose some volume, still they sound good. I would play around with gauges and get the best feel and sound for you! Taylors are high class! |
Question: | how many strings are in the package |
Answer: | This is a full set of 6 strings for acoustic guitar. |
Question: | Are all 6 strings supposed to be bronze and nano coated, or are the E-1 and B-2 anti-rust plain steel |
Answer: | On the individual strings' paper packets, only the wound strings (G-3 through E-6) have "Nanoweb coating" text. The E-1 and B-2 strings say "anti-rust plain steel" instead. |
Question: | What is the difference in sound between an 80/20 and phosphor bronze please? And poly and nano web? Which is warmer, less bright |
Answer: | 80/20 is very bright and crisp... Phosphor bronze is far more articulate and warm. And over all a more balanced sound. Hence why they cost a bit more than 80/20. As for poly vs nano? Poly has more coating to protect the strings.. But dull the sound a bit. Nano has less coating but last a bit less than poly. Hope that helps. |
