14 best tube amp attenuator
A tube amp attenuator, also known as a guitar amp attenuator, is a device used in conjunction with a guitar amplifier to reduce the volume of the amplifier's output while maintaining the desired tone and overdriven sound. This is particularly useful in situations where a guitarist wants to achieve that characteristic tube amp distortion at lower volumes, making it ideal for home practice, recording, or playing in smaller venues without overpowering the room.
Here's how a tube amp attenuator typically works:
Input and Output: The attenuator is connected between the amplifier's speaker output and the speaker itself. It acts as a bridge between the amp and the speaker.
Attenuation Control: The user can adjust the level of attenuation using a control knob or switch on the attenuator. This allows for fine-tuning the volume to suit the environment and performance needs.
Load Box: Inside the attenuator, there is a load box that safely absorbs the excess power from the amplifier. This is crucial because it prevents damage to the amp when running at lower volumes.
Resistive Network: Attenuators employ a resistive network to dissipate the excess power as heat. This ensures that the amplifier still gets the load it needs to operate properly and maintain its tone.
Speaker Emulation: Some attenuators also include speaker emulation features, which simulate the sound of a miked-up speaker cabinet. This can be useful when you want to use headphones or route the signal directly to a recording system.
Benefits of using a tube amp attenuator:
Tone Preservation: Attenuators allow you to retain the characteristics of your tube amp's sound even at lower volumes.
Versatility: You can get the desired overdriven tone at bedroom-friendly volumes, making it suitable for practice or home recording.
Protects Your Ears: Lowering the volume of a cranked tube amp helps protect your hearing and keeps your neighbors or family happy.
Recording Flexibility: Attenuators with speaker emulation can provide a direct feed to recording equipment, simplifying the recording process.
Live Performances: In smaller venues, where you don't need your amp to be extremely loud, an attenuator can be a useful tool for achieving the desired sound without overwhelming the audience.
It's important to note that while attenuators can be very useful, they may not completely eliminate the need for a loud stage volume in some live performance situations. Some sound engineers prefer to mic the amp and route it through the PA system to achieve the desired mix in larger venues.
Overall, a tube amp attenuator is a valuable tool for electric guitarists who want to harness the full potential of their tube amplifiers while maintaining control over the volume level.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this still come with Wall of Sound like it does on Sweetwater |
Answer: | The short answer is yes; however, there are a few factors that may influence your decision. Are you located in an area that has very low humidity (i.e., Arizona or some other very arid environment) or are your reeds stored in and remain in an environment that is air conditioned (which mimics the arid climate by dehumidifying the air) 24/7/365?If so, then a humidifier is probably a thing to do to maintain a constant moisture level in the reeds. If not, then the average humidity in the case is probably around 50% and most humidifiers try to maintain either 58%...not a great difference from the ambient 50%...or 72% which is very moist and, in my experience threaten to encourage mold in your case.As you can probably tell, I'm not a great fan of the humidifiers. I use Protec cases for my oboe reeds (my principal instrument), my Bb and Eb clarinet reeds, soprano, alto, tenor, and bari saxes...for a total of 8 Protec cases and one Rico humidifier case. The Rico was purchased to hold 8 bari sax reeds (at about $3.50 per reed). I was not a happy camper when, in the temperate climate of Toledo, Ohio the almost thirty bucks worth of reeds molded over one weekend.Again, the short answer is that it is possible. |

Question: | Would this work on a 100 Watt Twin Reverb |
Answer: | I have the Protec Clarinet and Saxophone Reed Cases. The Clarinet case is definitely too small for Bari reeds. The Saxophone case is probably too small, although I don't know for sure, my Tenor reeds fit pretty snugly. |

Question: | So, if this plugs into the effects loop, does that mean that you can't run your effects in the loop at the same time |
Answer: | Yes, assuming it is an electric bass. |
Question: | What is the wattage/power rating |
Answer: | It is a simple passive volume pedal. Two inputs and two outputs controlled by one pedal. If you plan on adding it in line with your audio cable from your instrument than it should work fine. |
Question: | i have an old marshall head but it doesnt have an fx loop, can someone help me if there is another way to use this jhs amp box |
Answer: | It's a volume pedal first and foremost, but if you're using it with a guitar rig you can use it to express single notes or chords from a low volume to high or back and forth and it works well for that purpose. If that's the kind of expression you're talking about. |
Question: | The features and details say this works with the jhs morning glory v2. Does it also work for morning glory v |
Answer: | I contacted the manufacturer and was told the following:"There is no 100K pot in our volume pedal series. There are 50K and 250K---DF1511A and DF1511B" |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this amp have an effects send.rcv |
Answer: | No it does not. Its a clean, simple tube amp with good tone. |
Question: | will it play wel lwith a fender percusion bass |
Answer: | Your better off with a fender rumble 40w or 100w these are more for electric guitars...the fender rumble is around same price But made for bass guitars I own both 40 and 100 w Great amp with ear phone and mp3 jack, you jam with the pros... |
Question: | what is the actual weight |
Answer: | Just a guess, I’d say 15 pounds. |
Question: | Any suggestions on tubes that will break up a little earlier? I use Teles and I want a more driven sound without effects |
Answer: | You could try a hotter EL84 power tube from JJs and a Tung Sol 12AX7 preamp tube. I've tried this combo with great results. Incredible tone and the variety of sounds from this one little amp in just amazing! It is easy enough to swap tubes out so if you don't like that combo you can just play around with setups and see what suits ya best! |
- BanTamP XL series features a channel switching footswitch, 6 knobs--specifically speaking, 2 channels can be controlled independently, now we have better control over the volume of CLEAN Channel and DISTORTION Channel, and adjust their GAIN and TONE independently.
- The JACKMAN has to fill some giant shoes and it manages to have the same mid-gain drive sound that reacts beautifully to your playing and guitar volume. just like the classic rock monster, the JACKMAN needs a bit of help to push it further.
- The JACKMAN also has a CLEAN channel that can take pedals really well, which makes it flexible and a great little companion for many situations where your "big" head is just not sensible. Use a TS-type pedal (like the JOYO Green Legend or Vintage Overdrive) to push it into higher gain territory and hear it sing.
- The amp operates with a single 12AX7 tube in the preamp and uses a solid state power amp. the FX loop enables you to put your time based effects (or Phasers, Flangers and Choruses) behind the drive section and keep the effects sharp and not prevent them from being too muddy.
- The icing on the cake is the Bluetooth connectivity is great to practice with PlayAlongs or to learn songs. Careful, the amp is small, but loud… its 20 Watts can be quite a handful. If you want to practice quietly, use the built in headphone out with speaker emulation.
User questions & answers
Question: | Anyone know of a reasonable cabinet to pair this amp with? Preferably a 12 inch speaker |
Answer: | I paired it with a Marshall 1x12 cabinet, but I’d try it with a Celestion Vintage 30 loaded cabinet honestly. |
Question: | Does it have a speaker |
Answer: | No, this is an amplifier only. It can hook up to external speakers (8 ohm minimum load) and does so nicely. You can also use them with headphones that have a 1/4" input. |
Question: | Does anyone know if they carry the new Joyo 20 watt mini cab designed for these heads? They have a 8 in Celestion and look and sound great |
Answer: | Hi, joyo cabinet for the mini amps had been in the market for a long time, and it is also used for this new amp, the JACKMAN and JACKMAN XL are both JCM 800, The difference lies in the footswitch and both channel we have the control knobs. Please feel free to purchase, thank you! |
Question: | What is the difference between this model and the Zombie amp you sell |
Answer: | Zombie sounds similar To Mesa dual rectifier. The Jackman sounds similar to Marshall JCM800. |

Question: | Is this a good harmonica amp |
Answer: | No idea. My guess is that it would be overkill for a harmonica amp but I don't understand the specific needs of a harp player. Get Legendary Studio Tones from your Tube Amp — Anywhere, at Any Volume.
OX Amp Top Box is a premium reactive load box and guitar recording system that gives you perfectly studio-miked amp sounds from your favorite tube amp. OX lets you play and record your amp in its sweet spots — from huge clean tones and edge-of-breakup to fully cranked — at any volume level, and with mic, room, and speaker cabinet emulations at the turn of a knob.
Featuring Universal Audio’s breakthrough Dynamic Speaker Modeling, OX is the first system to accurately emulate speaker drive, breakup, and cone cry — making it the world’s finest speaker attenuator and guitar amp recording solution.
With decades of analog hardware engineering expertise, Universal Audio’s dream team of engineers set out to design a reactive load box that retains the tone, dynamics, and feel of your tube amp no matter how much it’s attenuated. The goal was for your tube amp to see OX as an actual speaker — with continuously variable impedance and response — so you don’t lose a drop of tone or playing dynamics. Just plug your tube amp’s speaker output into OX, and then plug OX’s output into your cabinet, and you’ll enjoy your amp’s natural tone like never before.
OX is more than a reactive load box, it's a complete Guitar Recording System. OX's front-panel, six-position RIG control allows you to quickly choose from complete setups — including 22 vintage and modern cabinets loaded with iconic speakers from Celestion, Jensen, JBL, and more close mics, ambient room mics, and up to four simultaneous studio effects.
OX is also the only guitar recording system to offer a complete selection of expertly placed room mics, giving you the authentic experience of pushing air while recording your cranked amp in a world-class tracking room. Dynamic Speaker Modeling A's groundbreaking Dynamic Speaker Modeling faithfully emulates speaker breakup, drive, and cone cry — an essential ingredient to organic tube amp tones.
Using the Speaker Breakup knob in the OX app, you can control the harmonics and sonic complexity that occurs only at certain frequencies and volume levels on various speakers — far beyond a static Impulse Response system — giving you the same sonic phenomenon that occurs with a real speaker cabinet.
Most guitar products do digital awkwardly; they’re ugly and hard to understand. The OX software app, on the other hand, offers simple, intuitive control over all of OX’s RIG settings via Wi-Fi — letting you tweak, store and recall hundreds of presets from your iPad, Mac, or Windows 10 computer. You can then save your six favorite sounds onto OX’s front-panel RIG knob for instant recall in the studio or at a gig.
OX Amp Top Box also features a front-panel headphone jack for silent practice with your cranked tube amp, and sports a bevy of connections for all kinds of recording and live workflows. S/PDIF RCA and optical TOSLINK digital stereo outputs, as well as balanced TRS stereo line outputs with front panel level control, give you the necessary connections for studio monitors, DAW, or live mixing console inputs. Plus, you can connect any one, two, or three-button footswitch and toggle OX's studio-quality effects on and off.
