14 best bass amp heads

Bass amp heads, also known as bass amplifier heads, are a crucial component of a bass guitar amplification setup. They are a type of amplifier designed specifically for bass guitars, and they serve as the power source for driving bass speakers. Here are some key points about bass amp heads:

  1. Purpose: Bass amp heads are responsible for amplifying the signal from a bass guitar, making it loud enough to be heard through speakers. They provide the necessary power to drive bass speakers and produce the low-frequency sounds associated with bass guitars.

  2. Separation: Unlike combo amplifiers, which combine the amplifier and speaker in a single unit, bass amp heads are typically separate from the speaker cabinet. This separation allows bassists to choose different cabinets for different tonal characteristics or to use multiple cabinets for more volume.

  3. Power Rating: Bass amp heads come in various power ratings, typically measured in watts. The wattage determines how loud the amplifier can get. Higher-wattage heads are capable of producing more volume and often have more headroom for clean tones.

  4. Tone Shaping: Most bass amp heads include tone controls such as EQ (equalization) knobs, which allow bassists to shape the tone of their instrument. Common EQ controls include bass, midrange, and treble, allowing for adjustments to the low, mid, and high frequencies.

  5. Preamp Section: Bass amp heads often have a preamp section that can include features like gain controls, compression, and various tone-shaping options. The preamp is where the initial signal processing occurs.

  6. Effects Loop: Some bass amp heads include an effects loop, which allows you to connect external effects pedals or processors. This can be useful for adding effects like chorus, reverb, or distortion to your bass signal.

  7. Portability: Many bass amp heads are designed to be compact and lightweight, making them easier to transport than combo amplifiers. They are commonly used by gigging musicians who need a versatile and portable solution.

  8. Tube vs. Solid-State: Bass amp heads can be either tube (valve) or solid-state (transistor) based. Tube amps are known for their warm, natural sound and often used in vintage or high-end setups. Solid-state amps are more reliable and affordable, offering a cleaner and sometimes more modern sound.

  9. Amplifier Brands: There are many reputable brands that manufacture bass amp heads, including Ampeg, Fender, Gallien-Krueger, Markbass, and more. Each brand may have its unique features and tonal characteristics.

  10. Matching Cabinets: When using a bass amp head, it's essential to pair it with a compatible bass speaker cabinet. The choice of cabinet can significantly impact the overall sound and performance.

Overall, bass amp heads are a crucial part of a bassist's toolkit, allowing them to shape their bass guitar's tone, control volume, and achieve the desired sound for various musical styles. The choice of a bass amp head should align with a bassist's specific needs and preferences.

User questions & answers

Question: Why does it say one watt output when it states on the back of the amp that it sucks 25 from the wall
Answer: Output power and current draw are two completely different things.
Question: Does this work on both 110v and 220v input
Answer: Mine is only 110v and it has no switch on the back to select 220v so i assume it is only a 110v model.
Question: What speaker cabinet is suggested for this head
Answer: I have the Blackstar HT-112 MKII 1x12" Guitar Cabinet. But any good 1x10 or 1x12 cab will work. The head will work with 4,8 or 16 ohm cabs.
Question: Which Blackstar footswitch works with this head
Answer: A 2-way footswitch can be connected. The footswitch will enable the selection of the Clean and Overdrive channels, and the two voices on each Channel. The correct footswitch is an FS-16, which has two switches. (The FS-4 only has one switch.)

User questions & answers

Question: My hotone makes a popping sound on the speaker when I turn it on. is it normal
Answer: Yes that is normal.
Question: Can this power a cabinet speaker like this one - crate gc-412s
Answer: It can be used, but it won't be as loud as you might think. However, if you ran this amp through at least a 100w power amp, then you'd get the decent output that you're looking for.
Question: Is the hotone mojo diamond for bass or guitar
Answer: While the Thunder is specifically designed for bass (to emulate an Ampeg SVT), the Mojo Diamond sounds quite good with a bass. Think of the Fender Bassman. While I appreciate the SVT grind on occasion, I prefer the Fender tone for bass. If you play both guitar and bass, it's a no-brainer. This one is more versatile. For the cleanest tone, turn the gain all the way down. It won't play loud but it's great for bedroom-level practice. For best use with a bass, use a speaker with high sensitivity. Just going from a speaker with, say, 89 db sensitivity to 92 db is equivalent to going from a 5 watt amp to a 10 watt amp.
Question: What are the real size of the item? What is the difference with the 4th item of the 2nd comparison
Answer: It's 5 inches long, 2 inches tall and 2 inches deep

The range of EQ is wide enough for you to shape your bass tone to anything you like, from Motown era vintage p-bass low mid thing to modern day super ultra fat low-end stuff. It does it all!

A Guitar Hack!

As you know, many bass amps were originally designed for the bass and then recognized as a guitar thing. Think about Bassman. TAR-20B is no stranger to that. I tried my Strat on it one time. It blew my mind. I mentioned the EQ range above, but haven't said anything about the GAIN. The GAIN circuit is wired to emulate the classic SVT style tone. But with the combination of GAIN and EQ, magic happens. You can the tonal characters of a lot of vintage amps. Twin, Tweed, JTM, AC 30, JC 120, the list goes on and on.

Keep It Light

The TAR-20B is designed to be compact and light-weighted so that you can put it in the gig bag and grab it on a go. But we added a little CAB SIM and headphone jack and AUX IN jack. So you can plug your instrument in and put your headphone on, then play anywhere and anytime, with any backing tracks you want. Not only it weights light, but also you can keep the volume light.

Other Features

TAR-20B has a chorus circuit in it for you to expand your sonic dimension. And as any bass guitar amps out there, it has an FX Loop for you to add additional effects in it. And it has a 4/8 Ohms compatible speaker output.

  • Its remarkable technology and size make it the most portable, gig-worthy bass amplifier ever made
  • It’s an ideal solution for any bassist who is concerned with size and weight, but isn't willing to compromise on tone or performance

User questions & answers

Question: Can this drive two trace elliott elf 1x10 cabinets
Answer: I use it to drive two Ampeg 2x10 cabinets. The amp only has one speaker outlet so I connect it to the input on one cabinet and then using another cable connect the out from the first cabinet into the input on the second cabinet. I don’t know the inputs or outs on the Trace cabinet. You could use a one male 1/4” to two female 1/4” y cable to run cables to both cabinets. Two 8 ohm cabinets hooked up this was will give a 4 ohm load on the amp which is the lowest you want to go and will give you the most watts or loudness.
Question: Does it work with singapore power supply 220v
Answer: No. It doesn't work with Singapore Power Supply 220v. I made the mistake of ordering it, and was quite disappointed.
Question: What kind of cable jack plugs into speaker output
Answer: The speaker output is a quarter inch jack. There is also an XLR D.I. Output
Question: Can this be plugged into a PA system
Answer: Yes! It's got an XLR out to plug into your PA via mic cable.

Don't be fooled by its small size; the Ampeg Micro-VR is one compact powerhouse. Don't be fooled by its diminutive appearance; the Ampeg Micro-VR is a compact powerhouse fully capable of pumping its 200W of genuine Round Sound into myriad live and recording situations. The portable, powerful solid-state bass amp head is a pleasant surprise from the second you lay eyes on it to the moment its indisputable Ampeg tone hits your ears.

Ampeg SVT Micro-VR Bass Head: A Compact Powerhouse

Don't be fooled by its diminutive, dare we say "cute", appearance. The Ampeg Micro VR Bass Amp Head is a compact powerhouse fully capable of pumping its 200 watts of genuine Round SoundTM into myriad live and recording situations. This portable, powerful solid-state head in traditional Ampeg drag is a pleasant surprise from the second you lay eyes on it to the moment its indisputable Ampeg tone hits your ears.

The Micro-VR head delivers 200W of pure Ampeg tone, in a package that could practically fit in your pocket. This deceptively small head provides the looks of the classic SVT-VR that made the original famous in the 1970's. A balanced direct out, -15dB pad, on-board limiter and dual speaker outs offer tremendous versatility whether on stage, or in the studios. The 1/8" stereo input and output let you easily integrate an MP3 player for practice or recording. Pair it with the companion SVT-210AV cab for a fully gigable, but super micro rig. Great sound, unmatched portability...small wonder, it's an Ampeg.

The Ampeg SVT Legacy

The SVT has become the bass amp that all rock bassists dream of, whether they're famous or completely unknown.

Former Bass Player editor Scott Malandrone put the SVT in perspective this way: "The SVT has done for the sound of electric bass what the Marshall Super Lead had done for the electric guitar--it would give the instrument an identity." We couldn't say it better ourselves.

Ampeg Amps: Built to Work Hard

Ampeg, (a division of Loud Technologies) is recognized world-wide as the premier name in bass and guitar amplification since the 1960's, when the SVT (Super Valve Tone) bass amplifier took the rock world by storm with its 300 watts, 8 x10" speaker cabinet and a tone that would go on to set the standard for rock and roll bass. Today, Ampeg continues on as the leader in professional bass gear and a cherished manufacturer of classic guitar amplifier designs with a continuing tradition of advancing bass tone through quality & innovation.

User questions & answers

Question: Can you plug this into a single 8 ohm speaker
Answer: Absolutely. Sounds fantastic. I’ve used it with a 4x10 cabinet, and even my 8x10 cabinet. Nice with my old Sunn 2x15 as well.
Question: Would this Amp work good in Metal music situations
Answer: I tried to answer earlier, but couldn't post. Got nothing but adds...I'll try again. Amp head is great, but I use it with another cabinet. An old SWR Little Henry. I can switch from Guitar to bass without changing any settings. I think the cabinet that comes with it is muddy. If you want all 200 watts. you need two cabinets anyway. I suggest you get the head and take it to some music stores to find the right cabinet. I play in a punk/metal band as well as a straight rock band and use it for both. I did have the traditional SVT and I think it sounds just as good without the backbreaking weight. It's good for small and medium clubs...although even when I played my big SVT...all that ever happened was they put a microphone on one speaker anyway.
Question: Will it work with guitar
Answer: that is subjective...i think you mean does it sound good,right...to my ear no,but remember you might hear it differently...i play guitar thru a bugera head topping a marshal quad...my ampeg poerws a 15 inch speaker cab... bass is great but guitar sounds too bottom heavy(like my ex)if you play thru a 10 or 12 inch speaker maybe your guitar will sound ok to you..but this is a bass head so for my ear i say no..good amp head, tho andwill play whatever you plug in...choose wisely, grasshopper
Question: can this be used with an acoustic Bass
Answer: I use this gem for my electric basses, acoustic electric bases, and my upright bass that utilizes a Realist Pickup (under the foot of the bridge) and it is fantastic. I take the VR and the matching AV 210 cabinet to most gigs, large and small, and did the DI in the back of the head to be a sound man favorite. They love seeing this amp come in. I’ve got two of them and have used two of the 220 cabinets with one head, but found it unnecessary in big clubs with a sound man. Now I keep one set at a studio I regularly work at and use the other at home and for travel. Small, light, and great sound.

User questions & answers

Question: Is the cabinet rated at 8 ohm or 4 ohm
Answer: Philossifer, Speaker 2x10" at 8 ohm .. The question should be, is it worth the money & performance? Yes Most Excellent. I do play my Fender Jazz Bass on occasion but prefer this amp over my Fender Champion 100 2X12" for playing my Telecaster & Stratocaster with pedals thru this little Ampeg. the quality of sound will blow you away, just my opinion. ziggy
Question: all in got was the top part, is this correct? now I need to but the bottom
Answer: You should have gotten both parts. That's what makes it a "Stack"... Did you order direct from Amazon?
Question: Can you put foot pedals in it
Answer: I had mine returned because the bottom speaker was blown, but from what I do remember it did not have additional input output for foot pedals. You would be better off with the Ampeg 115v2 bass amp. That is what I got to instead. It has the foot pedal in/output, and is only an extra $50 for 100 extra amps. It is a great all around amp.
Question: bought this for my nephew but only the top part in the photo came. so I guess I need to order the bottom half now, is this correct? the bottom isn't here yet, thanks for the info!!!! disregard my other question couldn't find the answer at first...lol
Answer: When I ordered this amp it was delivered to me with the head and cabinet (the top part and bottom part) so it's strange to me why you were only given the head (top part)This amp has a more expensive brother, the Micro AV which ships separately; but this order should be together :)
