| Answer: | This is in a precipitation harden condition, T6, which makes it high strength, but low ductility. It can be bent a little bit, but if want anything like a 2" bend radius or less with 1/8" thick stock (educated guess only) you want aluminum a more ductile condition like the materials sold by Home Depot. I couldn't find the alloy and condition for Home Depot's aluminum bar stock, but my experience with it suggests it is in a slightly hardened condition. Trying to achieve a bend radius anywhere close to the bar thickness is likely to cause a fracture. Annealing cold-worked aluminum requires heating to 650 F to 800 F. Solution treating 6061 (i.e. fully softening) requires heating to 980 F for an hour. Since 6061 starts to melt at 1080 F, the only feasible way to do this is with a well controlled furnace. |
