You should also male sure to habe take black fit ring that holds the bag in place. That goes on before the lid. That's the trim ring (actually fit ring) that's pictured to the left between the lid and trash can. I hope that I was able to provide you with some viable information. I've had my can for a couple of months now and I just love it!

Answer:	While I am sure that it is not airtight in the technical sense of the word, the lid does close completely and no odor escapes. We have two cats and I have noticed a distinct absence of odor since we bought two of these (one for regular trash and one for recycling materials. We are very happy with these cans.

Answer:	The air damper should last for 200,000 steps which is quite a lot. This is a fairly new product and the only requests we've gotten as a seller is for backup air dampers.
