14 best vhf marine radio

A VHF (Very High Frequency) marine radio is a communication device commonly used in maritime settings for ship-to-ship and ship-to-shore communication. Here's what you need to know about VHF marine radios:

  1. Frequency Range: VHF marine radios operate in the frequency range of 156.025 to 162.025 MHz. This frequency range is specifically allocated for maritime use to ensure communication reliability.

  2. Safety and Emergency Communication: VHF marine radios play a crucial role in maritime safety. They are used to communicate distress calls, emergencies, and other critical information to the Coast Guard and other vessels in the area. The "Mayday" call is a well-known distress signal transmitted via VHF.

  3. Channels: VHF marine radios have specific channels for different types of communication. Channel 16 (156.800 MHz) is the international calling and distress channel and is monitored 24/7 for emergency calls. Other channels are designated for various purposes, such as navigation, weather updates, and routine communication.

  4. Line of Sight: VHF radios operate on line-of-sight communication, which means their range is limited by the curvature of the Earth. The effective range can vary based on factors like antenna height and weather conditions but is generally limited to a few miles to about 25 nautical miles.

  5. DSC (Digital Selective Calling): Many modern VHF marine radios are equipped with DSC technology. DSC allows for the automatic transmission of distress signals with precise location information, enhancing the speed and accuracy of emergency response.

  6. GPS Integration: Some VHF marine radios can integrate with GPS systems to provide automatic position information when sending distress signals. This helps rescuers locate vessels in distress more quickly.

  7. Weather Alerts: Many VHF radios have the capability to receive weather alerts and updates, which is crucial for sailors and boaters to stay informed about changing weather conditions that may affect their safety.

  8. Antennas: The height and quality of the antenna play a significant role in the effective range and performance of a VHF marine radio. Higher antennas generally provide better range and reception.

  9. Licensing: In many countries, including the United States, operators of VHF marine radios are required to have a license. This helps ensure that users understand proper radio etiquette and safety procedures.

  10. Maritime Regulations: VHF marine radios are subject to international and national regulations and standards to ensure safe and efficient maritime communication.

In summary, VHF marine radios are essential tools for maritime communication and safety. They provide a means for boaters and sailors to communicate with each other and with authorities in case of emergencies, as well as access weather information and other important updates while on the water.

User questions & answers

Question: Can I use this radio as a scanner to listen to great lake freighter radio traffic
Answer: Yes, but if you only want to listen to voice traffic, a cheaper VHF, without DSC and GPS, will also work fine. Most are about $100 cheaper. This radio is suitable for recreational vessels involved in racing and coastal cruising.
Question: is this pair of radios? (2 radios for
Answer: Nope, it is a single radio. The two-way designation means it both receives and transmits, as apposed to, say, your car radio, which only receives.
Question: how far off shore will this radio work
Answer: Dennis, I have only used it in local waters but believe this VHF will work 15 to 20 miles away. If you go off shore (15 to 50 miles) you should rely on a VHF with large antenna etc.
Question: If I buy 3 of these radios can I talk and listen to others on the same channel
Answer: Recent FCC change makes it legal to talk from shore to a boat on the water. Must restrict oneself to marine related traffic. Effective January 2017, the use of portable VHF radio ashore is allowed, “so long as it is limited to enhancing the usefulness of marine VHF radios without negatively affecting maritime communications.” From BoatUS Magazine, April-May, 2017

User questions & answers

Question: How do i activate my radio
Answer: Go to https://www.boatus.com/MMSI/MMSI/Home and register for an MMSI number. Once the MMSI number has been obtained it must be entered into the radio. Push the "CALL/SET" to enter the DSC menu then look for the MMSI entry option. Follow the prompts.
Question: I have a cobra marine radio f57b. Can I use the radio without requesting a mmsi
Answer: Yes
Question: Does it work in the Middle east
Answer: i dont know works great midwest
Question: WHAT IS CLASS-D
Answer: Both category A and D radios can send and receive digitally encoded distress calls on channel 70, which is reserved exclusively for digital communications. Category A radios, however have two separate receivers, with one constantly tuned to channel 70. Category A radios are therefore more flexible and capable of delivering advanced communication capabilities. With the press of a button, all DSC equipped VHF radios can send a distress call in digital form on channel 70. The call, sent in much less than one second, includes your unique identification number (MMSI) and if the radio is connected to a GPS or Loran C, the precise location of your boat. The distress call will continue to be sent until it is answered by another station. The station hearing the call will likely call your radio on channel 16 or, in the case of the Coast Guard on 22A and begin the process of bringing you the help you need. Having a highly automatic way of making your need for assistance known has obvious advantages.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this have a scan all channel feature? Also, does this use a common coax antenna connection
Answer: Yes, you can scan all channels or build a specific scan list. It uses a common PL-259 coax connector. SO-239 on the radio.
Question: So this fixed mount does NOT come with the exterior trim ring for dash mounting
Answer: no
Question: does this require an attena
Answer: Yes. It will require a VHF marine antenna. Standard Horizon does not make antennas.
Question: Does this broadcast and receive normal cb frequencies
Answer: No it’s a FM marine band radio
Question: Can readout be set for degrees, minutes, seconds
Answer: No...but converting is easy... Example: 38 15.625' is 38 15' 37.5' (.625*60=37.5) Also, one cannot change which system is used. Also, although it says BeiDou, I do not think it can use that as I display only shows GPS and GLONASS satellites and there is not menu setting that I can find to change that. But BeiDou is not needed and less accurage.
Question: can this unit help find survey pins
Answer: If you mean by location then yes it can give you the general area to search.
Question: Is their an owners manual for this unit
Answer: It comes with a folded sheet of instructions--the instructions are easy to read. The units measure position roughly accurate to about 5m and measure distance and areas with accuracies related to that accuracy. Note: Although the units advertise as doing BeiDou besides GPS and GLONASS, the units that I have received only do GPS and GLONASS. In the photo you can see a row of bars for GPS and a row for GLONASS. There is no third row for BeiDou despite the advertising that it will also use BeiDou.
Question: Is there a spanish setting for this gps
Answer: No but the language use is very little and it is simple to operate.

This information can be found in the included manual. We really like this radio for what it is, but do not expect a $500 radio at this price.

Question: i have been looking at these marine VHF radios and they don't seem to come with chargers - how do you charge these radios
Answer: If memory serves correctly it comes with a usb cord that I put into a 110 ac plug with usb slot that then plugs into a protected slot that you manually open which is on the right side of radio as looking at the front side. It can also be charge by a computer, but it is slower. Its a great radio for my challenge adventure kayak needs.

Question: Is the antenna detachable? I have a small pelican case I like to keep electrnic in
Answer: Yes antenna is detachable. It is screw on.
Question: Can a speaker microphone be used with this radio
Answer: No. There is no speaker microphone available for this radio. Look at the HX-290, HX-400 or HX-870.
