12 best thermal pastes

Thermal paste, also known as thermal compound or thermal grease, is a crucial component in the cooling system of electronic devices, especially in computers. It is used to facilitate the transfer of heat between a heat-generating component (e.g., a CPU or GPU) and a heat sink or cooler, ensuring efficient heat dissipation. Here's what you need to know about thermal paste:

  1. Purpose: Thermal paste is used to fill the microscopic gaps and imperfections between the metal surfaces of a CPU or GPU and the heat sink or cooler. These gaps, if not filled, can trap air, which is a poor conductor of heat, leading to inefficient cooling.

  2. Conductivity: Thermal paste is designed to be a good conductor of heat. It helps in minimizing the thermal resistance between the heat source and the heat sink, allowing for more efficient heat transfer.

  3. Types: There are various types of thermal pastes available, including silicone-based, metal-based (e.g., silver or copper), and ceramic-based pastes. The choice of paste depends on factors like the application and desired thermal conductivity.

  4. Application: Applying thermal paste correctly is essential for optimal cooling performance. Typically, a small amount (usually a pea-sized dot) is applied to the center of the CPU or GPU, and then the heat sink or cooler is mounted to spread the paste evenly.

  5. Replacing Thermal Paste: Over time, thermal paste can dry out, lose its effectiveness, or develop air pockets. When this happens, it's advisable to clean off the old paste and reapply a fresh layer to maintain efficient cooling.

  6. Thermal Paste Pads: Thermal paste pads are an alternative to traditional thermal paste. They are pre-cut, solid sheets with thermal properties. They are easy to apply but may not offer the same level of thermal conductivity as traditional paste. The choice between paste and pads depends on specific cooling requirements.

  7. Cooling Systems: Thermal paste is commonly used in conjunction with various cooling solutions, including air coolers, liquid coolers, and heat pipes, to ensure that electronic components remain within their safe temperature ranges.

  8. Performance: The quality of thermal paste can impact the thermal performance of your computer. High-quality pastes with better thermal conductivity can result in lower temperatures for your CPU and GPU, potentially extending the lifespan of your components and improving system stability.

  9. Maintenance: Regular maintenance of your computer's cooling system, including checking and possibly reapplying thermal paste, is important for keeping your system running efficiently and preventing overheating.

  10. Compatibility: It's important to ensure that the thermal paste you choose is compatible with your specific CPU/GPU and cooler. Some pastes may not be suitable for certain applications.

In summary, thermal paste is a vital component in electronic devices, especially computers, that facilitates the efficient transfer of heat from heat-producing components to cooling solutions. Proper application and maintenance of thermal paste are crucial for maintaining optimal system performance and preventing overheating issues.

User questions & answers

Question: Is it eligible to use in a ps
Answer: If you would like to. It would probably be similar to what you had. This stuff is ideal because it's not conductive.
Question: Can i use this on 1080ti gpu
Answer: You can use this for any GPU or CPU.
Question: Does this paste need to "set in" before installing my water block? If so, how long
Answer: I don’t think so. I just put mine on and started it up. I hear that the paste will “set” from the heat coming off the CPU. Just remember to put a pea size amount and when screwing on the cooler to apply even pressure alternating tightening the screws so that the paste spread evenly.
Question: Is it thick or runny
Answer: Easy to apply and temps are good. It is thick enough to not run all over the place but then enough to spread easily. Very first application came out fairly thick with a liquid like substance at the base of it. So give it a good shake before applying. I removed that application and applied another which was easily spread on the CPU with a spreader without worry of run off. I like the paste.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this paste hold the heat sink on its own on a Blackberrys Pi device? How much time does it take to cure to hold the heat sink like a glue
Answer: This isn't a thermal glue so it wont hold well after it dries. Pi devices usually don't produce enough heat to need more than a little air flow. Are you sure you need a heat sink? Check out Arctic Alumina Thermal Adhesive. That will work better than this for adhesion.
Question: How long will thermal compound paste last for a computer repair technician? will it finish fast? as the tube looks so small
Answer: The tube may look small, but considering the amount you need, you could easily cover more than a couple dozen CPUs (depending on the size of your CPU, of course)! You only need to apply very, very little and then spread the paste evenly. I noticed that a pea-sized blob of paste may already be too much because a lot of the material sticks to the tool! I do not recommend the method where you put a blob in the middle of the CPU and then apply the heat sink on top of it hoping that the paste would spread out on its own: a) the paste may not spread evenly and therefore might create hot spots; b) you may waste material which would only run beyond the borders of the CPU. The manufacturer claims an 8-year durability. I can't comment about that since I haven't used it that long.
Question: Roughly how many applications will you get out of one tube
Answer: I still have more than half of a 4g tube left, 4 years after I bought it - it has an eight year shelf life, IIRC... I haven't kept track for certain, but I think I've done at least 5 applications or more and still have half a tube left. Crazy thing is right now, for $1 less, you can buy the 8g tube from Amazon directly rather than the 4g tube from the other seller - seems a no brainer. Great stuff.
Question: is it rgb
Answer: If you drop acid before you apply it... Yes!

User questions & answers

Question: will this work for adding a heat sink to a 18v 550 dc motor
Answer: Should work just fine.
Question: How many coffee lake cpu applications is the 4g enough for? i will be doing the "one spot" method as recommended
Answer: I did two and have some left in tube - not sure how much.
Question: How does this one (current edition?) for 8.99? Compare to the one a few dollars more expensive
Answer: I've never done a true comparison but I believe the more expensive paste does a slightly better job at transferring heat for the extreme overclocking crowd. It might also resist caking and drying at higher temperatures like those found in extreme OC builds. I can't say for sure any of this is true, not having done the tests for myself, but this logic seems to be the general consensus among PC builders.

User questions & answers

Question: does this work with playstation 4 console
Answer: I think i would have noticed anything obnoxious, and I am sensitive to strong odors. Using it a year now there certainly isnt--just checked.
Question: It´d work for my laptop noisy fan cooler
Answer: I keep medication in the bag with an extra ice pack. It was cold for well over 8 hours.
Question: I know this good for ps4 but can pad be good too and what size
Answer: I wash mine by hand in cold water with Dawn dish soap and let it air dry. I take my in a kayak three times a week, so it can handle getting soaked a lot.
Question: How many grams needed for I
Answer: I ordered a set of two of the Xtra small ones. Was great for a lunch for a couple. My girlfriend and I took them on a hike. We fit a hoagie sandwich, carrots, sliced cucumbers, chips, a pudding cup, a 2 pack of Oreos, a spoon, and a small ice pack in each of them just fine. So, for a lunch, it's perfect. If you're trying to for water bottles, and Tupperware containers, and a bunch of crap in it, don't get it. But for a lunch or snacks, it's perfect. :). As far as actual size, I'd say a foot long (maybe foot and a half) long, by about 8 inches wide, and 5 or 6 inches tall. Hope this helps.

Arctic Silver Thermal Cooling Compound Paste 3.5g High-Density Polysynthetic Silver

Arctic Silver 5 does not contain any silicone. The suspension fluid is a proprietary mixture of advanced polysynthetic oils that work together to provide three distinctive functional phases. As it comes from the syringe, Arctic Silver 5's consistency is engineered for easy application. During the CPU's initial use, the compound thins out to enhance the filling of the microscopic valleys and ensure the best physical contact between the heatsink and the CPU core. Then the compound thickens slightly over the next 50 to 200 hours of use to its final consistency designed for long-term stability. (This should not be confused with conventional phase change pads that are pre-attached to many heatsinks. Those pads melt each time they get hot then re-solidify when they cool.

The viscosity changes that Arctic Silver 5 goes through are much more subtle and ultimately much more effective.)

Kryonaut  uses a special carrier structure, which does not begin any drying processes even at 80 ° C. This carrier structure ensures that the nano-aluminum and zinc oxide components contained in the paste combine optimally, thus optimally compensating for unevenness in the heat transfer medium (e.g. the CPU) and a heat sink (e.g. heat sink) with excellent thermal conductivity.

Question: Is this better than ic dimond paste
Answer: Check out the charts- https://play3r.net/reviews/cooling/thermal-paste-comparison-2017-what-is-the-best-thermal-paste-2017/
Question: Is this compound electrically conductive
Answer: No, this product is not electrically conductive
Question: How many uses is this good for? i want to do my cpu and my dual gpu 295x2 card. i tend to do a single small centered line method of applying paste
Answer: Late answer, but relevant still. I'd say closer to 10 proper applications. 4-5 if you don't really give a crap. I was able to repaste my old Desktop's GTX 660ti, and do my laptop's CPU and GPU twice because I wanted to test how much Kryonaut works best. I still have enough to do all 3 again, but my first application on the CPU and GPU were the larger amount some people use for other pastes, but this paste really heats up and doesnt work with too much. I found it is most effective to very sparingly add as you spread until a paper thin layer is on the surface of whatever you are pasting. Don't worry about the layer being even or perfect, the Heatsink will fix that.
Question: Does it come with RGB lighting
Answer: It’s compatible with MSI RGB... my cpu heatsink blocks the view though.

Product features

Outstanding Results

With its new formula, the MX-5 allows a low minimum bondline thickness and thus features in combination with a high thermal conductivity a very low thermal resistance. Thanks to its non-drying and non-bleeding properties, it guarantees a good long-term performance.

Highest Thermal Conductivity

The surfaces of processor chips and cooler floors are covered with microscopic dents; ARCTIC‘s MX-5 thermal paste is composed of carbon microparticles which fill these cavities. This leads to high thermal conductivity, guaranteeing that heat is dissipated efficiently from the CPUs, GPUs or power semiconductor components.

Easy Application

Thanks to its consistency, MX-5 is easy to apply, even for beginners. The video in the picture gallery demonstrates different application techniques to avoid air pockets between processors and coolers.

Safe Application

In contrast to pastes based on metal oxides or liquid metal, ARCTIC MX-5 is neither electrically conductive nor capacitive. This eliminates the risk of short circuits and discharges, plus you don't have to worry about corrosion damage to the cooler base caused by liquid metal.

User questions & answers

Question: whats the experation date, also will cold storage effect lifespan
Answer: I have the same problem with my AMD FX8350 CPU and THAT is using Corsair H100 Water cooling with fans (4) in push/pull setup.I have full coverage and used "Artic Silver" before; yet I am running at 60-C TOO HOT..Some answers state too much grease; you really can't use too much as all the excess would squeeze out and around the cpu ( which isn't good either.) The claim made by Artic Silver is a number of heat cycles to set the particles. Meaning computer turned off cooled down and booted back up a number of times. Temps are also influenced by the rooms temperature the computer is in as well. As I've said I have used this product and can not explain why I am getting these temps? I removed the product and used the thermo grease I have been using. NOW my temps are at CPU idling 29-C and full all eight cores at 125w CPU 4.3 Ghz 100% load 45-50 C.
Question: Can u use this for a original xbox, ps3, ps
Answer: I used to use only Arctic Silver 5 for years of building computers. About 4 years ago I noticed some of the computers CPUs were running hotter than expected. I pulled off the CPU coolers to find that the arctic silver had turned into a solid. It was like the coolers were welded to the CPU and in some cases I couldn't remove the cooler without the CPU coming off with it. These machines were around 3 to 4 years old. After replacing the arctic silver with new paste they ran better and cooler than when I originally built them. I do believe this stuff used to be the "best" (like 6 or 7 years ago) but now there are much better options that last longer without losing their heat transfer capabilities.
Question: Do we get 5 x 1.5g or 1.5g total
Answer: If still in un-opened tube or properly sealed tube it should be fine. I've heard people have used after 6 years with no issues, but that is with a complete un-opened tube. However, just make sure the connection to the heat sink and CPU is cleaned thoroughly before applying. If after; using your own 10 yr old tube, and find the temp of your CPU running a little high then I would recommend buying a new tube. Actually, I would recommend buying a new tube anyway. This tube is small and will work for a few installations. That way, why hassle with getting it done with your tube only to find out it hasn't held well over the years. Good luck.
Question: Where can i get the msds for this
Answer: The surfaces of CPUs and heat-sinks, no matter how perfectly flat they may look, contain microscopic pits and valleys. These pits and valleys trap air, which is one of the worst conductors of heat imaginable, and this is where thermal pastes comes in. Thermal paste is designed for optimal thermal conductivity and is used to fill in all of those little pits and valleys to provide molecule to molecule thermal contact. This translates into lower temperatures, longer component life, and no burnt out CPUs. NEVER run a computer without a heat-sink and thermal paste installed, it can take only seconds to permanently damage or destroy your CPU.There are many different levels of quality among thermal pastes. The stuff that comes with pre-built computers or packaged with processors and most heat-sinks are considered the bare minimum while Arctic Silver is considered by most to be the best available. Arctic Silver claims that Arctic Silver 5 will lower CPU temperatures by 3-12°C over standard pastes with most actual users say it lowers it by 10°C.As to how to install it. Consult the manufacturers website of whatever thermal paste you purchase and in lieu of that try the heat-sink manufacturer, the processor manufacturer, or the internet in general. The directions for Arctic Silver can be found at http://www.arcticsilver.com/methods.html. You may want to consult YouTube after reading up on the official method to see it done in practice before doing it yourself.
