11 best vehicle sound deadenings
Vehicle sound deadening, also known as automotive sound insulation, is a technique used to reduce and control the amount of noise and vibrations that enter the vehicle's interior. It is an essential aspect of enhancing the comfort and quietness of a vehicle's cabin. Here's what you need to know about vehicle sound deadening:
Purpose: The primary purpose of vehicle sound deadening is to minimize external noise, vibrations, and road-related sounds from penetrating the car's interior. It also helps in reducing noise generated by the vehicle's engine, exhaust, and other mechanical components.
Materials: Sound deadening materials are typically made from materials such as butyl rubber, asphalt-based sheets, closed-cell foam, and mass-loaded vinyl. These materials are designed to absorb and dampen sound waves and vibrations.
Placement: Sound deadening materials are strategically placed in various areas of the vehicle, including the doors, floor, roof, trunk, and wheel wells. The goal is to cover panels and areas that are prone to transmitting noise and vibrations into the cabin.
Benefits:
- Reduced Noise: The most apparent benefit is a quieter and more comfortable cabin environment. This is especially important for long drives and when driving on rough or noisy roads.
- Improved Audio Quality: Sound deadening can enhance the audio quality in the vehicle, allowing for clearer music and phone call experiences.
- Thermal Insulation: Some sound deadening materials also provide thermal insulation, helping to maintain a consistent interior temperature and improve climate control.
Installation: Installing sound deadening materials can be a do-it-yourself (DIY) project, but it may also be done by professionals. It involves removing interior panels, applying the materials, and reassembling the vehicle.
Types of Sound Deadening Products:
- Damping Mats: These are adhesive-backed sheets that are applied to metal surfaces like the car doors and floor. They help to reduce vibrations and resonance.
- Soundproofing Sprays: Some automotive soundproofing products come in spray form and can be applied to specific areas.
- Foam and Insulation: Closed-cell foam and automotive insulation materials are used for both sound and thermal insulation.
Aftermarket Products: There are various aftermarket sound deadening kits and products available, allowing vehicle owners to choose the level of soundproofing they desire based on their budget and specific needs.
Effect on Vehicle Weight: Adding sound deadening materials to a vehicle can increase its weight slightly. However, the trade-off is often considered worth it for the improved comfort and reduced noise.
In summary, vehicle sound deadening is a valuable automotive upgrade that enhances the comfort and quietness of a vehicle's cabin by reducing noise and vibrations. It is achieved through the strategic application of specialized materials in various areas of the vehicle, leading to a more enjoyable driving experience.

User questions & answers
Question: | what is the abrasion resistance of this material to be used in a trunk space |
Answer: | This material is just foam with adhesive backing. It needs something on top of it to protect it. Typically you would put mass loaded vinyl on top of it as part of a butyl, foam, vinyl sandwich for the best sound deadening and resonance control. You can also just put carpet over it. |
Question: | What is the max temp rating for this product? What could I use to insulate up to 900*F |
Answer: | Noico RED 150 mil temperature limits are from -49 degrees F to +190 degrees Fahrenheit. In your situation, you need to use special materials designed for 900-3000 degrees F. We're sorry, but we do not carry such type of materials. |
Question: | Can i use this on the hood of my 82 wagoneer |
Answer: | DEI has hood liners. I have their silver one which is working great and hasn't peeled off in the 6 months I've had it on. And it cut down on engine noise a lot. It's only like $60 on amazon last I checked. Their black version is newer. |
Question: | So this is a secondary layer to work together with kilmat or something? And would it place on top of it or on the other side |
Answer: | If you want to use Noico Red 150 mil material in combination with butyl based sound deadening material, then the installation plan will be as follows: 1 layer: butyl based sound deadening material with thickness around 80 mil installed on pre-cleaned and degreased metal surface of a vehicle; thoroughly pressed down to the metal surface with a roller 2nd layer: Noico Red 150 mil installed on top of the layer of butyl based material Please note, all sound deadening materials are to be installed only from the interior side. |
- AUTOMOTIVE SOUND DEADENING MATERIAL: Damplifier Pro auto sound deadening material will deaden metal and stop structural noise to give any car a luxury feel. Used for car audio, hot rods, trucks, Jeeps, RVs – anywhere metal rattles.
- BUTYL RUBBER SHEET: We recommend a butyl sound deadener. Every sound deadening mat has some combination of rubber and other fillers, such as asphalt. It’s cheaper to use asphalt, but we avoid it due to health concerns.
- HIGH QUALITY SOUND DEADENER: With an industry leading heat rating (450 F) and a proprietary combination of butyl rubber and annealed foil, Damplifier Pro delivers industry leading sound dampening while meeting high health safety standards (RoHS compliant).
- HEAT AND SOUND DEADENING MATERIAL: Damplifier Pro was engineered to be more than a sound dampener. The foil heat shield acts a radiant barrier and thermal insulator.

Stop unwanted noise with the right sound deadening materials.
At Second Skin, we pride ourselves in offering best-in-class solutions to help you eliminate unwanted noise and soundproof your car. Everything we sell has been tested in the field and in the lab to ensure you get the best possible results. We offer a comprehensive line of the best car insulation solutions for your vehicle. Whether you have rattling metal distorting your speakers, a car restoration side-gig, or just want to create a bubble of comfort for yourself as you drive down the highway, we have the high quality materials that will get you to your destination.
Why do cars make so much noise?
Noise inside the passenger compartment of a car comes from one of three sources:
- Wind Noise: Noise that enters through gaps, holes, and open windows.
- Structural Noise: Noise that is generated by vehicle mechanical systems and travels through the vehicle structure before radiating into the passenger compartment.
- Airborne Noise: Noise that is generated by vehicle systems or an external source and enters the passenger compartment by first traveling through air, then passing through a body panel, and finally reradiating into the passenger compartment.
To fix wind noise, you need to plug the holes. To stop structure borne noise, you have to damp the metal. To eliminate airborne noise, you need to block it with a noise barrier.
Quality materials matter. You’ll only make that mistake once.
Damplifier Pro sound deadening mats are made of 100% butyl rubber. Nobody sells butyl rubber as thick as we do (80mil). Other high quality options cap you out at 67mil. We also sell the thickest, highest quality foil constraint layer. Our annealed aluminum foil is reinforced to ensure the best damping performance. Finally, our butyl adhesive is extremely strong. Once applied, the permanent bond won’t come unstuck for the rest of the life of the vehicle. Damplifier Pro will go with your vehicle to the scrapyard.
The result is a mat with best-in-class damping (peaks at n=0.434), best-in-class temperature rating (450 F), and best-in-class customer support as we’re available to you until you complete your build and beyond.
Now… to the low-quality stuff. Do yourself a favor and avoid asphalt-based products. If they don’t talk about “butyl rubber”, it’s because they don’t have it and their lawyers won’t let them. The problems you run into with asphalt is threefold:
- It stinks. If you open the box and it smells bad, take it back ASAP. It’s only going to get worse when you’re in your car on a hot summer day.
- It melts. We have dozens of examples where we helped a customer remove low quality asphalt from their car. It takes hours of work, and isn’t particularly fun.
- It outgasses chemicals. When you heat up asphalt, the fumes it releases are toxic to you, causing headaches, coughs, and worse (look it up). It’s not on the level of lead paint or asbestos, but why would you put it into your car?

Decide
Decide what parts of the car you want to insulate first: roof, floor, doors, trunk, firewall, or hood. Insulating each part of the vehicle has its benefits. You likely need to do a little detective work to identify the noisiest parts of your car or truck. For the best results, you’ll need to soundproof all of your vehicle’s metal surfaces. Before installing any material though, step #1 is always to expose the sheet metal. For any metal surfaces behind plastic panels or upholstery, you’ll need to research how to remove them. Be careful to avoid breaking plastic trim parts or any fasteners. Detailed step-by-step guides can be found on our website or the one of the many automotive forums.
Remove
Remove any damaged factory insulation after you’ve dismantled the interior. If the insulation is in good shape, you can choose to leave it and save yourself the trouble. Ensure all debris, rust, and waxy oils are removed from the application surface. Clean the surface with denatured alcohol and a dry, clean rag. We do not recommend using a solvent or degreaser, as they can leave behind a film that will prevent the best bond from forming. Allow the metal to dry.
Measure
Measure the cleaned surface where you want to apply your sound deadener. We recommend to start by making a pattern of an appropriate size on paper or cardboard and then transfer that to the sound deadening sheet. Taking the time to measure will give you a cleaner install and avoid wasting material. Use a sharp utility knife to trim the mat to the appropriate size. Our annealed foil constraint layer is sturdy, so we do not recommend scissors. Be careful and wear gloves. The foil edges are sharp.
Install
Hold the mat up to the metal surface of the vehicle where you’ll be applying it. Make sure you like the coverage before removing the wax paper and exposing the tacky butyl adhesive. For larger sheets, it can be easier to gradually remove the paper backing and slowly work your way across the panel. Use your hands to flatten the sheet and adhere it to the metal surface before rolling out any air pockets with a wooden hand roller. Pop any stubborn air bubbles with a pin. After you’ve smoothed out the butyl sheet with the roller, you’ve created a permanent bond that’ll stay stuck even under extreme conditions.
Sound Deadening
Sound deadening is the hidden secret behind the upholstery of any car project. To reduce road noise, use Damplifier Pro to stop the structural noise generated by vibrating metal. Stop the vibrations, stop the noise.
Sound Blocking
After you’ve damped the structural noise, stop airborne noise with a sound blocking layer covering the entire floor and inside the doors. Luxury Liner Pro has a high r-value and STC rating, making it an ideal insulating noise barrier for engine, exhaust, and road noise.
Sound Absorption
Further quiet things down inside your vehicle with sound absorption materials. Mega Zorbe has a high r-value, making it excellent for the car roof, and a high sound absorption coefficient to reduce interior echoes and improve acoustics in door cavities.

HOW TO INSTALL
Please carefully read a service instruction up to the end. It is important to familiarize oneself with all the details as efficiency of soundproofing doesn't just depend on material you use but mainly is a result of correct installation. Please note that incorrect installation might lead to undesirable results or no effect at all.
STEP 1
Decide what part of a car you want to insulate in first place: floor, roof, doors, trunk or firewall. Treatment of each metal part of car has its unique contribution to overall effect. With that being said, we recommend to soundproof all metal parts for maximum performance. Next, find a service manual to your particular vehicle and locate a part that explains as to how to dismantle the trimming panels. You'd have to be carefull when taking them off and avoid breaking the fixing clips. That sort of information could be also found on a relevant automotive forums.
STEP2
Remove the remains of factory insulation once trimming is dismantled. You only need to do that if the factory insulation is damaged or not properly fixed. You can leave it there if it's still in a good shape. Next step is to properly clean, dry and degrease the prospective surface. Sound deadening won't adhere properly and may not last long if applied to wet or dirty surface. Use a degreaser and dry, clean rag for this purpose. We also recommend wearing gloves and to air a room from time to time during the work. * Pre-try a degreaser on a small spot before using that on plastic or painted parts.
STEP3
Once step 2 is complete, measure the prospective surface that you are going to treat. Quick tip is to first make a template of appropriate size on a paper and then transfer it to deadening mat. That will help to place it accurately and avoid wasting a material. Use a stationary knife or construction scissors to cut a desired shape and size. Be careful and use gloves for your hands protection.
STEP4
Next, place
