3 best salmon spinning rods

Salmon spinning rods are specialized fishing rods designed for targeting salmon using spinning reels. These rods are engineered to provide the angler with the right combination of power, sensitivity, and action to effectively catch salmon in various conditions. Here are some key features and aspects of salmon spinning rods:

  1. Length: Salmon spinning rods typically range in length from 8 to 10 feet or more. Longer rods allow for longer casting distances and better control over line management, especially when fishing in rivers and streams.

  2. Power: The power of a salmon spinning rod determines its ability to handle different sizes of salmon. Rods are generally categorized as light, medium-light, medium, medium-heavy, or heavy. The choice of power depends on the size of salmon you're targeting and the fishing conditions.

  3. Action: The action of a rod refers to how it flexes under pressure. For salmon fishing, a moderate to fast action is preferred.A moderate action rod will flex more evenly along its length, while a fast action rod will bend primarily in the upper third. This allows for better hook sets and control during the fight.

  4. Material: Salmon spinning rods are commonly constructed from materials like graphite, fiberglass, or a combination of both. Graphite rods tend to be lightweight and sensitive, making them suitable for detecting subtle bites. Fiberglass rods, on the other hand, are more durable and offer better power for larger salmon.

  5. Line and Lure Weight: Each salmon spinning rod is designed to handle a specific range of line weights and lure weights. These specifications should be matched to your preferred fishing line and the size of lures you plan to use.

  6. Reel Seat and Grip: The reel seat is the part of the rod where you attach the spinning reel. It should securely hold the reel in place. The grip or handle of the rod should provide comfort during long fishing sessions.

  7. Guides: The guides are the small rings or eyelets through which the fishing line passes. Quality guides are essential for smooth casting and line control. They should be designed to reduce friction and minimize line wear.

  8. Salmon Species: Consider the specific salmon species you intend to target, as different types of salmon may require different gear and techniques. Common salmon species include Chinook (King), Coho (Silver), Sockeye, Pink, and Chum salmon.

  9. Versatility: Some salmon spinning rods are designed to be versatile and can handle a range of fishing techniques, from casting lures to drifting bait. Others may be more specialized for specific fishing methods.

  10. Budget: Salmon spinning rods are available at various price points. It's essential to find a rod that fits your budget while still meeting your needs in terms of quality and performance.

When selecting a salmon spinning rod, it's crucial to consider your fishing preferences, the type of salmon you're targeting, and the fishing environment. A well-chosen rod can enhance your fishing experience and increase your chances of success when pursuing this popular game fish.

User questions & answers

Question: What's the total weight of the 8'6" MH rod and which is best out of the 3 8'6" rods for 1oz lures
Answer: Not sure of total weight, but it's light. I use the SST-S-862MH for casting 7/8oz mepps flying C's for river salmon... rod is rated for 3/8 - 1 1/2oz lures and 10-20lb line. For 1oz lures, I would stick with the MH rod... the M and ML may be a bit soft for repeatedly flinging 1oz lures... but I would bet they would make great stealhead rods.
Question: The picture of the handle on this rod looks like a casting handle. Is it in fact a spinning handle without the trigger finger grip? Thanks
Answer: It's a spinning rod. the distributor gets images from the manufacturer and we get them from the distributor. Sometimes the number if images we are enabled to use is minimal. There's no trigger. Thanks,UCG
Question: castinThe modle # SST-S-902MH is for a spinning rod but the picture is a g rod, if I was to order what rod would I receive
Answer: You will receive the SST-S-902MH. Great rod. Never had any problems with it.
Question: What the line rating on the sst 902Mh
Answer: the 902mh has a line rating of 10-30 lbs.
