12 best reptile habitat starter kits

Reptile habitat starter kits are comprehensive packages designed to provide everything a reptile owner needs to set up a suitable environment for their pet reptile. These kits are commonly used in the care of reptiles such as lizards, snakes, turtles, and amphibians. Here's what you should know about reptile habitat starter kits:

  1. Enclosure: Most reptile habitat starter kits include a terrarium or enclosure where your pet reptile will live. The size and type of enclosure may vary depending on the species of reptile you plan to keep. Some kits are designed for terrestrial reptiles, while others are suitable for arboreal (tree-dwelling) species.

  2. Substrate: The kit typically includes a suitable substrate or bedding material for the enclosure's floor. The choice of substrate can vary, and it should be appropriate for your reptile's needs, whether it requires moisture retention, easy digging, or a natural appearance.

  3. Heating and Lighting: Reptiles are ectothermic, meaning they rely on external heat sources to regulate their body temperature. Starter kits often come with heating elements, such as heat mats or heat lamps, and appropriate lighting fixtures. These components are crucial for creating a temperature gradient in the enclosure, allowing your reptile to thermoregulate by moving between warmer and cooler areas.

  4. Thermometers and Hygrometers: To monitor temperature and humidity levels within the enclosure, many kits include thermometers and hygrometers. Maintaining the correct environmental conditions is vital for your reptile's health and well-being.

  5. Decor and Hideaways: Reptiles often require places to hide, climb, and explore within their enclosure. Starter kits may include items like branches, rocks, caves, and plants to create a more natural and enriching habitat for your pet.

  6. Food and Water Bowls: Kits typically come with feeding and water dishes suitable for your reptile's size and species. These bowls should be easy to clean and disinfect.

  7. Dietary Supplements: Some kits include basic reptile dietary supplements, such as calcium powder, which may be necessary to ensure your pet receives essential nutrients.

  8. Care and Maintenance Guide: Many starter kits come with care guides or manuals that provide essential information on setting up and maintaining the reptile's habitat, as well as feeding and general care guidelines.

  9. Species-Specific Kits: Some kits are designed for specific reptile species, such as bearded dragons, leopard geckos, or ball pythons. These kits may include specialized components tailored to the needs of that particular species.

  10. Customization: While starter kits provide a convenient way to get started, it's important to remember that the needs of reptiles can vary widely based on species, size, and individual requirements. Depending on your specific pet, you may need to customize the habitat with additional elements and accessories.

Reptile habitat starter kits are a helpful option for beginners, as they provide essential components and guidance to create a suitable environment for pet reptiles. However, it's essential to research the specific needs of your reptile species and potentially consult with a reptile expert to ensure that the habitat is appropriately tailored to your pet's well-being. Regular monitoring of environmental conditions and maintenance of the enclosure are also crucial for the health and happiness of your reptile.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this going to be too small for an adult crested gecko
Answer: You really want your adults to be in a 20 gallon container, 11 gallons is fine through the juvenile stage, but not a long term solution. I have my 2 crested geckos in a 18x18x24 and it's big enough for them through adult stage at roughly 30 gallons.
Question: Is it a 20 or more gallon tank
Answer: It would be smaller than a 20 gallon. A 20 Gallon Zilla Critter Cage is 24 x 12 x 16 (LWH) and this is 12 x 12 x 18 so this is only slightly more than half of the cubic space
Question: I live in a cold environment is the light bulb a heat bulb
Answer: Yes, the light can be used as a heat bulb for a tank this size , however be careful with this perticular bulb as the bulb itself gets very hot and should only be used with the screen covering that comes with the tank
Question: How would this tank fare for ball pythons
Answer: It would not be fit for a ball python of any age.

User questions & answers

Question: would this be a good basking spot for a red-eared slider
Answer: This is not designed to hold water. Please contact us at 1-888-255-4527 and we can offer assistance.
Question: Would this be good for a Savannah
Answer: It would be too small
Question: Will this work for a created geco
Answer: The size will for a juvenile up to about 6 months of age when it will need a larger habitat. That said, Geckos are tropical so the tropical starter kit would be a better choice
Question: would this be good for a bearded dragon
Answer: It would be fine for a small bearded dragon, but how big do they get? It's the standard glass aquarium you see for all small land and water animals. Ours is holding a baby snake, so we'll have to move up in size once it grows. Make sure you're distinguishing between the tropical model vs the desert model. The tropical one includes one heat lamp, with a daylight bulb, and an under-aquarium heat pad. There is no night/UVB bulb, or dome. The desert model includes two dome lamps with day and night bulbs, but no under-aquarium heat pad. So choose according to which items a bearded dragon needs most. The only other difference is the color of the bottom covering--one is sand colored and one is green.

Question: can you put a baby crested gecko in here
Answer: We didn't have a baby but I can't imagine it wouldn't work for a baby. Its a great tank and not any obvious areas of escape.
Question: Is this good for a baby emerald tree boa
Answer: I don't see why not
Question: For a green anole which tank would be the best suitable? I am leaning towards 12x12x18. And does it leak at all
Answer: It doesn't leak at the base up until the front ventilation, just below the doors. so you would be safe to make a water ate a up until that point. I like to say bigger is better. Minimal I go 18x18x24. It's better for the animals and us as far as being able to put proper climbing and hiding decorations as well as their water sources.
Question: How many gallons is the 18x18 x
Answer: If I've done the math right it's 33.6 gallons

User questions & answers

Question: I don't want to use for an animal/insect so can the mesh be removed from the lid just leaving the screen to use as cover? Thanks
Answer: Yes, i have 1 i use just as a planted terarrium for cacti and i have the top removed so the plants can grow without hitting the top.
Question: will this terrarium work for a bearded dragon
Answer: No. Bearded Dragons grow very fast and a juvenile would outgrow any of these tank sizes within a year. I learned the hard way and had to buy a couple of tanks in the first year I got mine. A long 20 gallon terrarium accommodated her for maybe 6-8 months and after that I upgraded her to a 50 gallon. The basking rock, food dish and water dish (which they love) take up a lot of space too so that's something to consider also.
Question: Regarding the exo terra mini (Wide) what are the dimensions of the bottom underneath the door? Looking to make the bottom part a "tank
Answer: Roughly 4 - 4.5 inches
Question: Would this tank (12x12x12) be good for a baby corn snake? Or would the next size up be better
Answer: I would recommend the 18x18x18. Something I've been told is that your snake tank should be at least as long as your snake. He might be a baby now, but in another 6-12 months, the 12x12x12 is gonna be too small and you'll have to buy a new one.

Egg Flats

EGG FLATS" (12"x12")

Included, can be placed inside a plastic storage container or aquarium to create the perfect feeder insect habitat. Egg flats can be stood up or laid flat, alternate, or flip each flat to give your feeder insects plenty of room. Disposable for easy cleanup

Good for Odor Control, Great for urine and feces absorption.

Vermiculite

is a needed component if your raising feeder insects. Place a layer of Vermiculite at the bottom of your tank or tub prior to set up. The purpose of the vermiculite is for urine and feces absorption. I would personally clean and replace monthly for best results. But this also depends on how many feeder insects you have. Vermiculite will also help with Odor control. So when you start to smell a fowl odor, good indication for cleaning

Safe Water source for your feeder insects

Water-gel Crystals

are great for feeder insects hydration. It's a better water source instead of just water, cricket is able to be standing on the water-gel while consuming water. If, your raising Dubia roaches, This prevent them from drowning

Mixture of dirt and peat moss. Great for egg laying. NO fertilizer or chemicals in Mixture

Top Soil

Non-fertilized and NO chemicals added. This dirt is derived from a combination of pine fines, hardwood fines, and forest products to ensure continuous moisture retention which is needed to aid with egg-laying. Just add this to the included container and keep moist with the spray bottle included, in this kit, for best results but don't overwater

User questions & answers

Question: good for a corn snake
Answer: My wife has a pueblen milk snake. A corn snake is approximately the same size. I'd say it's good for a corn snake.
Question: About how long would it take a baby king snake to outgrow this habitat
Answer: It wouldn't. A 20 long tank would be fine for it's entire life. However, for a baby or young adult (approx. under 2 years) use a 10 gallon. Too much room can cause stress (which could possibly lead to death) for a young snake. King's reach around 3.5 ft. I have a 5 ft cornsnake and a 20L tank will be all he needs. Hope this helped. EDIT: If this tank was purchased for a baby or young snake, you MUST have MANY places for it to hide so it feels safe. Or as mentioned above the stress could be fatal.
Question: how many gallons is the tank
Answer: 30x12x12 is 20 gallons. This is a terrarium and I don't think that these are made to hold water though.
Question: Will it fit a 22 inch blue eyed luci
Answer: Do not buy this product. It will break on shipping and you will have to go buy a new tank. I can tell you first hand and read the reviews.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this kit include a warming lamp
Answer: It includes lights but we added a warming rock
Question: What are the dimensions for both the small and medium
Answer: You advertise on this written advertisement that the Small is 18x 18 x24 and that the medium is 12 x12 x16. Is this a trick? If I order the small as you advertise it what will I get?
Question: I'm looking to get a mossy leaf-tailed gecko. What are the dimensions of the medium tank? Do you think it will be big enough for a uroplatus
Answer: It should be big enough for one mossy leaf-tailed gecko. The dimensions are 18x18x24 (LxWxH).
Question: what is included in the rain forest kit
Answer: I just got mine last week. I got a block of substrate for the bottom of the tank, 2 hanging plants (with suction cups), 1 ground plant with a heavy base, 1 bend-a-branch which is about 6 feet long - a little thin - I have it doubled in on itself and twisted around the tank, 1 small water dish, the light hood - bulbs not included - you have to buy seperate under 25watt bulbs (the hood only holds one bulb), I suggest https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00101JIA6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1 for day and https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0006L2UKQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 for night, both in the lowest watt because in reviews of this tank someone said a 25watt melted the hood. The 15watts give off enough light and I haven't had problems. The last thing included are a themomoter and hygrometer, which has very mixed reviews. I bought this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01GV4C0MY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s03?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and it does the trick better then the included ones, then of course the tank, the top mesh lid that comes off, and then a styrofoam background which is very nice. For me the plants and branch fill out the tank nicely, leaves room on the ground for a little cave or if you'd like to add more plants - but there's enough for your reptile to do in there without too much extra. Then I bought the https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00Z7PIYHY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1 for my gecko's food and it's all set up and looking nice.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this a good light for a Bearded Dragon
Answer: Absolutely not. This uvb is improper and your dragon will end up with metabolic bone disease. You'll need a either a reptisun 10.0 or Arcadia 12-14% long uvb bulb.
Question: Can this be used over an aquatic turtle tank ?i bought this instead of the aquatic set
Answer: I’ve used it over aquatic turtles and it was fine. Just be sure to have it at least 12-15 inches above the water and use zip ties to hold it in place on the lamp stand you use to avoid it ever falling into the tank. I put mine on their basking rock side away from the filters so it was t at risk of splash back either.
Question: I purchased this light set up a month ago and the basking light already blew out. How do i contact seller to try to resolve this issue
Answer: Should be able too go back to your purchase history. Click on the product and from there you should see “contact seller “.
Question: with the light or without light
Answer: Comes with two bulbs...heat and UV
