Answer:	I was never aware that even the original filter had a charcoal insert. The original insert seemed to look like a woven metal mesh. The replacement looked exactly the same as what we originally had in there.

Answer:	This a filter combination. You must use the aluminum filter with a charcoal pad. This combination filter should be inspected periodically and when it becomes saturated, it should be replaced. This does not have 'indicating' lines that change color when the pad needs to be replaced. Answer:	Mine came with filters. The white HEPA filter and an activated charcoal filter. I got mine over a year ago, but assume they are still shipped with filters. The HEPA filter is expensive $85 but lasts a number of months. The activated charcoal filter comes in a pack of 4 for $31.
