Answer:	The system fits into my dock, but VERY snugly. I have to double check that it's fully docked to play on the tv. When the covers are on the joycons, they do NOT fit in the joycon handle at all. I ended up ordering a different handle just for this.

The old model was very difficult to put on, extremely difficult to get off, and prevented the joy-cons from being removed and replaced. The new one is softer plastic, so it is easier to put on and is thicker and has more rounded edges. Most important to me, the new one allows you to easily remove and re-dock the joy-cons. The updated version also has small corner bumpers which make the switch much easier to hold and play.
