In the game you are able to unlock characters to play in minigames by playing minigames and earning points to level up your Party Level. I did this with a Donkey Kong Amiibo (I used a Mario Party amiibo version of him.) and a Diddy Kong Amiibo (The super Smash Brothers amiibo), so any character that are in this game can be unlocked by playing the game naturally and no need for Amiibo.

Answer:	This game does support "Download Play", which is where you have at least one player who owns the game is able to share a small multiplayer portion of the game with those who don't own the game locally in the same room or area. With this game the limitation is that there is only one playable track and a single character to play as. On the other hand Mario Kart 7 allows all tracks to be playable, but similarly limits character selection to Shy Guy with no vehicle customization options.
