Answer:	I have hand washed this brace once. I don't believe it would hold up in a washing machine cyxle.

Answer:	The whole thing is a hard plastic and yes the part where you put your hands so it makes it look like a C is hard plastic and then the strap goes over your hands. Also for my wife I relocated the strap that goes over the wrist portion to the top of the hand works out much better.
