Blast Off to Extreme Heights

With two rocket kits, the Tandem-X Launch Set offers two unique launching experiences. The aptly-named Amazon is the bigger of the two rockets: it towers at almost three feet tall and features a fearsome tiger-stripe decal. When flown with a standard Estes engine, the Amazon can soar to heights of 600 feet.

The Crossfire is a smaller craft, standing just a little over 15 inches tall. In spite of its size, this little rocket can blast off to seriously impressive altitudes. Thanks to its aerodynamic fins and nose cone, the Crossfire can reach cloud-bursting heights of 1,150 feet. Both rockets are outfitted with colorful, preassembled parachutes, which ensure they can float gently back to Earth for another flight.

An Introduction to Rocket Building

The Tandem-X Launch offers just the right amount of challenge for novice rocket builders. The Amazon is an E2X (easy-to-assemble) rocket, and requires no paint or special tools for assembly. It can be built in less than an hour: simply glue the plastic fins to the tube, install the engine, and attach the parachute. Finish the rocket off with a few self-stick decals, and you're ready to launch.

Once builders have mastered the basics, they can move on to the more advanced Skill Level 1 Crossfire. With its plastic nose cone and laser-cut balsa fins, the Crossfire requires a little more finesse. Assembling the rocket can take an entire afternoon, but it's a rewarding and educational process. Builders will learn several beginner-level rocket techniques, such as painting and sanding. Estes has also included an illustrated, step-by-step instruction guide to help keep the assembly fun, smooth, and frustration-free.

Educational Fun

In addition to the thrills it provides, the Tandem-X also has significant educational value. The set transforms kids into amateur rocket scientists, encouraging them to think about how the rockets work. Rocket building teaches kids the basics of propulsion, flight, and aerodynamics, and can help foster an early interest in science and engineering. Even failed launches can turn into a learning experience.

Requires an Estes Engine

Both rockets require a specialized Estes engine to launch. For the Amazon, Estes recommends a B4-2 engine for your first flight. The rocket is also compatible with other Estes engines, including the B4-4, B6-2, B6-4, C6-3, and C6-5. For the Crossfire, Estes recommends the A8-3 for first flight, and the B4-4, B6-4, C6-5, and C6-7 for more advanced launching.

User questions & answers

Question: do you need other items to be able to launch rocket
Answer: All you need is the "engines". I purchased the largest ones. A 4 pack. Don't remember how much I paid for them. But it wasn't much, about $10 I think.
Question: What additional supplies are needed to use this kit
Answer: as explain on the corner of the box for the Crossfire isx can be used the (A8-3), (B4-4), (B6-4), (C6-5), (C6-7), and for the AMAZON can be used the (B4-2), (B4-4), (B6-2), (B6-4), (C6-3), (C6-5) i personally use the C6-5 for both of them and believe is quite difficult follow the rocket when is landing back, and identify the approximate place of landing.with the hope to has been helpful a big Ciao Pietro Corrieri
Question: how high can it go
Answer: You will need to purchase the rocket engines. They are sold in packages of three and come complete with wadding and igniters. Estes recommends B4-2 for the 1st flight of the Amazon (larger rocket) and B4-4, B6-2, C6-3 and C6-5 are also compatible. The Crossfire (smaller rocket) will accept A8-3 (first flight), B4-4, C6-5 and C6-7. You will also need to purchase both plastic model cement and wood glue (white school glue okay) for assembly. Lastly you will need to purchase a small can of spray primer, a small can of white spray paint and a can of clear spray paint (optional) to finish the smaller rocket as it is constructed from paper tube and balsa wood with a plastic nose cone. The larger rocket is mostly plastic, already finished and just requires stickers to be placed after assembly. The only tools required to assemble either rocket are an exacto knife, a small piece of fine sandpaper and scissors. The larger rocket is much easier to assemble and I would recommend tackling that one first. It also accepts many of the same engine sizes as the smaller one so you may get by with purchasing just a couple of sizes. Engines are selected by letter with A being the weakest and D being the most powerful. The first number after the letter type represents how many seconds the "burn" is and the last number represents the delay before deploying the parachute. Choose accordingly and start with the lower powered engines first to properly test your rocket and confirm your launch location is big enough. Trees, wind, houses and fenced in yards with dogs can be potential setbacks. My son and I had to contend with all of these our first launch despite utilizing a local park with six or seven acres of open area. Hope this helps.
Question: Does this launch only once or multiple times
Answer: In order to launch the rocket, you will need the follow. You will need a battery for the launch ignition system. - It uses a single 9v battery.Rocket engines - You can use a8-3 for the Crossfire, a B4-2 for the Amazon (larger rocket), and move up to something more powerful later. The engine codes work like this (Impulse)(Thrust)-(Recovery charge delay).Recovery wadding - This is a flame resistant paper that you stuff into the rocket. It protects the parachutes from the recovery charge that fires after the engine burns out.To build the rockets themselves, which come unfinished.Scissors, a ruler, sandpaper (for the wooden fins, and finishing), carpenters glue, modelling knife (like an X-acto), masking tape, some plastic cement. The small rocket is actually unpainted, and you'll need some spraypaint to finish it. You can also get some clear coat to seal the paint on the rocket afterwards.

User questions & answers

Question: I am looking for a rocket my kids can paint themselves ...any suggestions
Answer: Estes makes a kit called "Estes Designers Special Rocket Kit Skill Level 1". It cost about $87.00 but makes eight rockets. Here is Tower Hobby description: (Should keep you busy lol)) Build and fly your own designs Parts included to build up to 8 rockets 100+ parts INCLUDES 2 each - BT-5, BT-20, BT-50, BT-55 and BT-60 18 body tubes Assorted engine mount tubes Assorted laser cut centering rings Assorted green centering rings Tube couplers for all body tube sizes Parachutes and streamers Launch lugs Engine hooks Engine hook retainer rings Engine blocks 18 & 14 shock cords Shock cord mounts Wood sheets for making fins Fin templates Tube transitions Plastic nose cones Nose cone inserts Clay for nose cone weight Clear payload section Model Rocket technical manual (basics of model rocketry)
Question: does it come with an engine
Answer: The Estes PN 1256 Alpha III Model Rocket Kit does not any engines. The Alpha III is an easy to assemble (E2X) kit that includes a molded nose cone and fin assembly, paper motor tube, green centering rings and a metal engine retainer hook. All of these parts are glued together to create the flying model rocket. We recommend Testors PN 3501 Plastic Cement (red tube) and a small bottle of Titebond II wood glue for assembly. No sanding or painting is required for the Alpha III rocket kit. Then for launching, we recommend you purchase PN 2222 Estes Launch System which contains the Estes Porta Pad II Launch Pad, Electron Beam Launch Control, launch rod, blast plate and stand off stem. You will need to purchase four, 1.5V Alkaline batteries for the launch controller (Energizer Max work very well for this application) as well as at least 1 pack of Estes 1598 A8-3 Model Rocket Engines (recommended first for the first launch) and PN 2274 Recovery Wadding. You might also consider purchasing one pack of Estes 2302 Starters just in case you need an extra or two. You could get also get the Alpha III rocket and a complete Estes launch system in one package by ordering PN 1427, the Estes Alpha III Launch Set, but you will still be required to purchase the glue, engines, recovering wadding, extra starters and batteries to assemble and launch the rocket. The Estes Team.
Question: Does this rocket require separate purchase of a launch controller
Answer: YES. You will need the launch pad hardware and controller. Have a nice day.
Question: How much engines does it have
Answer: No model rocket kit actually comes with engines. The Alpha III flies on a single engine and the engine must replaced with each flight. For small flying fields around 200 feet on the smallest side, a 1/2A6-2 or A8-3 would be the best choice. For flying fields with a few hundred feet on the smallest side, a B6-4 is the most common choice although a B4-4 will work well in this rocket. For large flying fields, a C6-5 or C6-7 will take it to its maximum altitude and very nearly out of sight. By law, model rocket engines MUST be shipped by ground so shipping these by USPS Priority Mail or any other service that uses aircraft is against the law and would expose the vendor to hefty fines. For this reason, even launch sets no longer include engines since including them would prevent shipping launch sets by faster means. No kits include engines for the same reason.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this come with parachutes
Answer: Yes, the Estes Wizard may be launched with any of the following engines: 1/2A6-2, A8-3, A8-5, B4-4, B6-4, B6-6, C6-5 and C6-7. Each letter - A, B, C, etc may be up to twice as powerful as the previous engine type. Therefore an A engine can lift your Wizard up to twice as high as a 1/2A and a B engine can lift your Wizard up to twice as high as an A engine, and so on. The Wizard's engine mount will not accept any engines with a "T" (tiny) at the end or a D or larger engine. The last number of the engine description provides the approximate number of seconds before the engine's ejection charge is activated following the end of the engine's thrust. The first number following the letter provides the engine's average thrust measured in Newtons.
Question: What size engines do they use
Answer: Item#1292 Wizard flying model rocket requires painting. Estes Customer Service
Question: Which rocket engines should I purchase for this set
Answer: We use super glue gel. We've tried different glues and this seems to work best with our kids. It sets really fast. We start with the A8-3 engines and use the igniters that are included. We have also used the B6-4's and C engines. We warn the students that they might lose their rockets with the C. It goes so high and far. This is the type of igniters we use: https://www.amazon.com/Estes-Model-Rocket-Igniters-Pack/dp/B009EZS08G/ref=sr_1_2?crid=2NIG1QSDE16MH&keywords=estes+igniters+and+plugs&qid=1552954316&s=gateway&sprefix=estes+ign%2Caps%2C203&sr=8-2
Question: Come with engines
Answer: The fins are wood. I'm not sure if they are balsa or some other type of wood. They have to be sanded a little bit(a very little) to reduce drag.

User questions & answers

Question: What does it not include
Answer: Launch equipment is purchased separately.
Question: What type of engine does it need
Answer: If built as instructed, it can use 18 mm B (B4, B6) and C engines (C6). "A" engines are too underpowered.
Question: Do you need to get a separate launcher? Any recommendation
Answer: Yes it will, I have both and use that launcher.
Question: How many times can the rocket fly
Answer: 1) A launch pad with controller. Batteries for the controller.2) Wadding to keep the parachute from burning.3) Engines with ignitors. B4-4 for smaller areas in town, but it won't go very high. C6-5's for larger areas and good height.4) Glue for the construction. Regular Elmer's is probably too weak, so I'd go with Wood Glue.5) Paint - your choice, obviously. I painted mine in the colors of my favorite NFL team. That paint cost more than the rocket, though!

User questions & answers

Question: Can you use this kit to build a multi-stage rocket
Answer: Yes, there are ample supplies in the kit for multiple builds and multi stage projects.
Question: Does it come with motors
Answer: No, does not come with motors.
Question: I need a set for a team of 8 kids. This says it builds 8...but would it really be enough? I wouldn't want one to feel left out
Answer: I'd agree with those saying go for a multipack of the same kit instead of this. This has a mix of different parts and nothing planned out - it really is for you to freestyle your own designs. I could see 8 kids arguing because someone got bigger parts, or cut their fins out of the middle of a sheet so others didn't have room or something like that.

User questions & answers

Question: Is it plastic
Answer: Yes, Item#2452 Athena is a plastic flying model rocket. Estes Customer Service
Question: Is the rocket already built
Answer: Short answer is, it's built except for tying on the parachute which took me less time than opening the packaging. The listing on Amazon claims "Ready To Fly", which is Estes old catchphrase for rockets that require no gluing. They've changed that branding and now the packaging says "level 1". In any event, I ordered the Athena rocket and when I opened the package it was even more flight-ready than the old "ready to fly" rockets: the only thing I had to do was tie the parachute string on...about 30 seconds of assembly. For anyone not familiar with estes model rockets, to launch you must have (separate from the rocket) a launch pad and 9v igniter device, and the complete the following steps: (1) tie the parachute strings to the eyelet on the nose. (30 seconds) The rocket is now complete. (2) insert (all separate parts used for each launch) wadding, engine, igniter, plug (2 minutes) (3) insert the parachute and put the nose on. (1 minute)
Question: Are the fins wood or plastic
Answer: The fins that came pretty attached to the rocket are plastic.
Question: Engine size
Answer: The manufacturer's Recommended Engines: A8-3 (First Flight), B6-4, C6-5

User questions & answers

Question: does this kit include the launching frame, or does it need to be purchased separately
Answer: you need a white spray and black and sliver bottles pulse decal set
Question: the size engine
Answer: No. To my knowledge no model kits do. Purchase a small tube of testors model glue along with it. This is a real nice model. Made a great diorama.
Question: Will this rocket launch with the launch pad in the 1403 Riptide Launch Set
Answer: 21 inches
Question: Hi, I'm beginner so what do I need to buy beside "Estes 1948 Big Bertha Flying Model Rocket Kit
Answer: Each section is put together and glued individually. Then the separate sections fit together to make the entire rocket, but the do come a part. I only wished it came with a display base that show them separated. So it is probably not the best for a 4 year old.

User questions & answers

Question: Are any tools required to build the Big Daddy
Answer: there are some tools required for building but you have to purchase everything separately. this was a waste of money for me
Question: Approximately how much does this weigh
Answer: 12 ounces - it flies high on a D or E engine - Make sure to glue the fins on well. Recommend the D-8 because that delays the ejection charge until the rocket has a chance to come back down. (Looks like its gonna crash, but it won't.) A D-3 engine might have the parachute come out at the top of the trajectory - which is cool, unless you are into chasing this thing until you get winded or it lands in the trees (bad). A lower (later) ejection charge means you get it back sooner, and can launch again sooner. BTW, be generous with the ejection wadding - that big body tube will burn/melt the parachute, and then all you have is excessively rapid descent, the hope that you glued the fins on strong enough, and in need of a spare parachute.
Question: What does it use for fuel
Answer: Estes engines C11-3, D12-3, D12-5, E9-4, E9-6I recommend starting with the C and D engines until you realize how far up this thing goes.Start with the E engine and you will not likely see it again.Don't fly in California unless a registered range - $1000 fine per shot.Good luck :-)
Question: Hi, I am new. What type of rocket engine does this model use? Thanks
Answer: I am not sure whay you mean by "What type", but what I can tell you is that they are pre-packaged engines made by Estes. They make them in multiple sizes depending on the capability of the rocket and what you want it to do. I am using the D12-5 and E9-6 engines. The D12-5 I use for the initial flight which will limit its altitude to a lower level because it is not al powerfull as the E9-6. The E9-6 is the most powerfull one to use with this rocket, flies great and goes to a much higher altitude. The number after the dash, like -5 and -6 is the time delay after the rocket engine burns out and the time the parachute is deployed, Most of the time this means a higher altitude for the rocket, if it is flying correctly.
