Answer:	Dear customer, thank you for your question. Yes, the building blocks stained with water-based paint and you can wash them.
Question:	What age are these blocks safe to use
Answer:	Varnish? these are completely eco friendly and have been extensively sanded. Truthfully we barely make 10% on this item we just thought it was cool bringing back kindergarten days. So, we made sure that these are top of the line. They might be finished (if that includes NO SPLINTERS EVER), but varnish sounds like a nasty word and I did not look it up. If it is paint then NO we did not paint or put gloss on them like Melissa and Doug may or may not do. And we do not use that fake rubber wood. This is pure New Zealand Pine.
Question:	Is the surface of this wooden blocks made of paint
Answer:	Not raw wood. Sanded. And finished with a BPA-free clear coat
