13 best 3m welding helmet

3M is a well-known manufacturer of personal protective equipment (PPE), including welding helmets. A 3M welding helmet is designed to provide essential protection to welders and metalworkers during welding and other high-heat industrial processes. Here are some key features and information about 3M welding helmets:

  1. Eye and Face Protection: 3M welding helmets are primarily designed to protect the welder's eyes and face from sparks, debris, and harmful ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) radiation generated during welding. They provide a shielded view through a protective lens.

  2. Auto-Darkening Technology: Many 3M welding helmets are equipped with auto-darkening technology. This means that the helmet's lens automatically darkens when the welding arc is struck, providing instant protection to the welder's eyes. When the arc stops, the lens quickly returns to a lighter shade, allowing the welder to see clearly without having to raise and lower the helmet repeatedly.

  3. Variable Shade Control: 3M welding helmets with variable shade control allow the welder to adjust the darkness of the lens according to the welding process and amperage. This customization ensures the right level of protection and visibility for different welding applications.

  4. Comfort and Fit: These helmets are designed for comfort during long welding sessions. They often feature adjustable headgear and padding to ensure a secure and comfortable fit for the wearer.

  5. Respiratory Protection Integration: Some 3M welding helmets can be integrated with powered air purifying respirators (PAPRs) or supplied air systems to provide respiratory protection in addition to eye and face protection.

  6. Grind Mode: Many 3M welding helmets have a grind mode, which allows the welder to use the helmet as a face shield during tasks like grinding without needing to switch to a separate grinding mask.

  7. Durability: These helmets are typically built to withstand the rigors of industrial welding environments. They are often made from durable materials that can resist heat, impact, and sparks.

  8. Compliance and Standards: 3M welding helmets are typically designed to meet or exceed safety standards and regulations set by organizations such as ANSI (American National Standards Institute) and EN (European Norms).

  9. Visibility and Clarity: The quality of the lens in a welding helmet can significantly impact visibility and clarity. 3M often uses high-quality lenses with good optical clarity to ensure welders can see their work accurately.

It's important for welders to select the right 3M welding helmet based on their specific welding processes, safety requirements, and comfort preferences. Additionally, proper maintenance and care of the helmet, including regular lens replacement, are essential to ensure continued protection and clarity during welding tasks.

Product description

The 3M Speedglas Auto Darkening Filter 9100XXi offers the same large viewing area as our 3M Speedglas ADF 9100XX. But thanks to improved optics, the 9100XXi ADF allows you to more readily recognize colors as compared to our other models.

From the Manufacturer

The 3M Speedglas Welding Helmet 9100 with Auto Darkening Filter 9100XXi helps provide professional-grade eye and face protection from debris and harmful radiation while offering better visibility. With improved optics, the 3M Speedglas Auto Darkening Filter 9100XXi allows you to more readily recognize colors as compared to our other models. Welders will see a view that is less green. Colors, shades, tone as well as light and dark contrasts will all stand out with more vivid detail. Many welders will find they have better control of the weld puddle with a view that appears lighter, brighter and more realistic. This may help you focus on your welding set-up, welding technique, precision grinding, and inspection of completed welds.

Switch Between Welding and Grinding in just 2 to 3 Seconds -- all with Your Gloves On

This helmet also comes with the 3M Speedglas Silver Front Panel 9100XXi, which offers the convenience of switching between welding mode and shade 3 grinding mode with a simple "gloves-on" touch of an external button on the silver front panel. There is no need to remove the helmet to change these settings. Memory modes allow accessing one of two pre-set welding modes. Both memory modes have an individual setting for dark shade, light to dark switching sensitivity and dark-to-light delay. An instant "Grab and Go" feature automatically turns the welding filter on to your most recent welding setting whenever you pick up the helmet. To save on power, it automatically shuts down after a period of inactivity.

Auto Darkening Filter Reacts Quickly After Striking an Arc The Speedglas lens features user-selectable dark shades of shades 5, 8, 9 through 13, and a light shade of 3. With a viewing area of 2.8 inches high x 4.2 inches wide (72 mm x 107 mm), the 9100XXi provides the largest viewing area available in the 9100 Series helmets, and an expansive field of view that helps the welder to see the work in progress with minimal obstruction. Three arc detection sensors in the lens activate the auto-darkening filter when an arc is struck. The lens then switches from light to dark shade in approximately 0.1 milliseconds (1/10,000 of a second), giving the welder an instant transition from light to dark shade while maintaining an optimal view for torch placement and weld puddle control. When the weld is complete, the filter automatically returns to light shade 3 with a delay of approximately 40-250 milliseconds, allowing almost immediate inspection of the weld pool and preparation for the next weld. Exhaust vents readily direct your exhaled air out of the helmet, helping to reduce heat, humidity and fogging of the welding filter.

The auto darkening filter can help reduce the need to flip the welding helmet up and down between torch placements, which boosts productivity by reducing the stop-and-start time needed with passive lens welding helmets. This feature can also reduce neck stain from “helmet nodding,” while greatly increasing the accuracy of torch placement. The helmet’s battery life is approximately 2,000 hours. The two Cr2030 3V lithium batteries that power the Auto-Darkening filter are easily accessible and replaceable, extending the helmet life.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this actually the 9100xxi? The second picture shows the 9100v welding filter, the first picture shows the newer shell however
Answer: Yes, you only get one diamond pad.
Question: Does it come with additional inside and outside protection plates? Sweatband and storage bag
Answer: They will last a very long time due to the fact that they ate diamond encrusted
Question: Is this hood okay for mig and stick as well as tig
Answer: I don't own the Bosch tool to answer your question.
Question: Does it have the side windows
Answer: Richard, My short answer is "yes". The MM910 sanding pad uses diamond dust for its surface; therefore, the expensive price. It is designed for "grinding" cement, plaster or mortar. Your situation might call for conventional sanding pads (MM70W or MM70P) The MM910 attaches to the Multi-Max tool through a MM14 hook and loop pad (think Velcro). Some companies make after-market accessories that retrofit to other brands so you have another avenue to find cheaper accessories. As an example, some company in China might make a universal accessory that fits Rockwell, Dremel or Porter-Cable because they all use the same layout for attachment. Regards, JLC

For professional welders, this welding helmet is a good investment that can pay off with greater service and satisfaction.

Auto Darkening Filter Reacts Quickly After Striking an Arc

The Speedglas lens features user-selectable dark shades 5, 8, 9 through 13, and a light shade of 3. With a viewing area of 2.8 inches high x 4.2 inches wide (72 mm x 107 mm), the 9100XX provides the largest viewing area available in the 9100 Series helmets, and an expansive field of view that helps the welder to see the work in progress with minimal obstruction.

Three sensors in the lens activate the auto-darkening filter when an arc is struck.

The auto darkening filter reduces the need to flip the welding helmet up and down between torch placements, which helps to boost productivity by reducing the stop-and-start time needed with passive lens welding helmets. This feature also can also reduce neck stain from “helmet nodding,” while greatly increasing the accuracy of torch placement. This, in turn, can reduce the need for grinding and rework, saving time, effort and money. The helmet’s battery life is approximately 2,000 hours. The two Cr2030 3V lithium batteries that power the Auto-Darkening filter are easily accessible and replaceable, extending the helmet life.

Welding Protection with Excellent Optics, Wider Front Views and Side Windows

The 3M™ Speedglas™ Auto-Darkening Filters Series 9100 offers uniform shading and minimal distortion across the entire filter viewing area. By selecting the right setting for each task, you help reduce eye strain and improve the quality of every weld. Any shade can be “locked-in.” For example, you can lock in the light state shade 3 for grinding. The 9100 series also includes an exclusive, innovative “tack welding comfort mode” which can help reduce eye strain.

One Helmet Works for Three Types of Welding

This fully assembled welding helmet with ADF (Auto Darkening Filter) offers sensitivity adjustments for use with most Stick (arc welding), MIG (Metal Inert Gas) and TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welding applications. The welding helmet uses an auto darkening filter that can be adjusted for different shades based on the welding amperage.

The ultimate in comfort with a headband that shapes for a customized fit

3M™ Speedglas Series 9100 FX helmets feature highly adjustable, ergonomically designed head suspension system featuring:

  • Two adjustable crown straps for increased stability and weight distribution
  • Padded front headband designed to evenly distribute pressure
  • Swivel-mounted smooth ratchet system for simple, precise tightening and ergonomic fit
  • Snap adjustment of nine different helmet angles
  • Large knobs for simple adjustment of “prep” and “parking” pivot positions, even while wearing gloves
  • Fits head sizes 6.25 to 8 (50 to 64 cm) approximately

The outside of the human head is lined with nerves, arteries, and acupuncture points: applying pressure to some of these spots can make a person feel fatigued. The headband of the Speedglas welding helmet series 9100 is designed to specifically avoid these vulnerable areas. By providing multiple adjustments and combinations, the helmet can be tailored to fit personal preferences and comfort settings. Less pressure, ¬ and a well adjusted personal fit – means more comfort, all day long.

The helmet also offers greater comfort when raised. Lifted into the raised position, the helmet’s “high point” is lower than many other helmets. From a design standpoint, that means keeping the helmet as close as possible to your head. Because the helmet is more balanced, the headband does not need to be tightened as much, helping to further increase wearing comfort. Adjustment of the helmet is easy. The smooth up-and-down pivot action can be “locked” in the up position – a light pull lowers the helmet back down again.

Versatile Eye and Face Protection for Welders

Welding helmets help protect the eyes and face in numerous ways. For starters, the helmet blocks welding sparks and spatter from reaching the eyes and face. The helmet also protects the eyes from exceptionally bright light and rapid changes in brightness, which can both stress and harm eyes. Without protection, eyes can be temporarily or permanently injured by the intensity of light produced by welding. Eyes also have difficulty adjusting to rapid brightness changes while welding in dark locations, which can be both a productivity and safety issue.

User questions & answers

Question: would this be too dark for tig welding 22 ga steel and light aluminum
Answer: Yes, this is a good option for welding outside, however any welding helmet with an autodarkening filter may be challenged with direct sunlight. Shielding your work area with a welding curtain is helpful. If that is not possible, you may want to consider one of the new passive lenses that are available for the 9100. Please contact the 3M Techline to further discuss at 800-243-4630. Thank you.
Question: can I use this hood with a hard hat instead of the ratchet with headband
Answer: I don't know much about the part numbers, but this model does have side windows. Every 9000 series hood has them, I believe.
Question: Can you attach a hard hat to it
Answer: Yes. You may consider one of 3M particulate welding respirators (e.g. #8214, #8212) or a 6500 series reusable half-face respirator and a #2097 filter (filters out particulates and nuisance welding fumes). Please contact the 3M Techline for assistance with respirator selection at 800-243-4630. Thank you.
Question: Is this solar & battery or just battery
Answer: I don’t think so

3M Speedglas SL Welding Helmet 05-0013-41, with ADF, 1 EA/Case

3M

Based on 14 reviews Check latest price

Product description

Be the featherweight champ with the 3M Speedglas SL. At only 12.6 oz. (including filter), it’s 25% lighter than our current auto-darkening welding helmets. New head suspension increases adjustability. ADF shades 8-12 and 4 sensitivity levels.

From the Manufacturer

3M™ Speedglas™ Super Light Welding Helmet SL with Auto Darkening Filter offers lightweight comfort while helping provide professional-grade eye and face protection from debris and harmful radiation including visible light, ultra-violet radiation (UV), infra-red radiation (IR), and sparks and spatter. At approximately 13 oz. (379 grams), this 3M™ Speedglas™ SL Welding Helmet is 25 percent lighter than any other current 3M Speedglas auto-darkening welding helmet, while maintaining the performance and protection that welders worldwide have come to expect in every Speedglas product. Its reduced weight feels lighter on your head and neck, and is easily adjusted to personal settings. The headband can be adjusted in size, allowing for an excellent fit for each individual user. Easy back and forth adjustments of helmet add to the comfort. The user can also tilt the helmet to the preferred angle. The narrowest helmet in the 3M Speedglas lineup, the SL helmet is a great option for many tight.

Quick and Light, Perfect for Fast Tasks

Using specialized manufacturing techniques, 3M has reduced the overall weight of this welding helmet by greatly reducing the weight of the auto-darkening filter. The helmet is also designed to stay light. Unlike other lightweight helmets that can absorb moisture and become heavy, the Speedglas™ welding helmet SL is made from a strong, non-absorbent material. The helmet also comes with a motion sensor that automatically turns on the welding filter when the helmet is picked up.

Auto Darkening Filter Reacts Quickly After Striking an Arc

The Speedglas lens features user-selectable dark shades of shades 8 through 12, and a light shade of 3. Two arc detection sensors in the lens activate the auto-darkening filter when an arc is struck. The lens then switches from light to dark shade in approximately 0.1 milliseconds (1/10,000 of a second), giving the welder an almost instant transition from light to dark shade while maintaining an optimal view for torch placement and weld puddle control. When the weld is complete, the filter automatically returns to light shade 3 in 60-250 milliseconds, allowing quick inspection of the weld pool and preparation for the next weld.

The auto darkening filter reduces the need to flip the welding helmet up and down between torch placements, which can help increase productivity by reducing the stop-and-start time needed with passive lens welding helmets. This feature can also help reduce neck stain from “helmet nodding,” while greatly increasing the accuracy of torch placement. This, in turn, can also help reduce the need for grinding and rework, saving time, effort and money.

Welding Protection with Excellent Optics and Wider Views

This helmet offers uniform shading and minimal distortion across the entire filter viewing area. By selecting the right setting for each task, you help reduce eye strain and improve the quality and production of every weld.

Versatile Eye and Face Protection for Welders

Welding helmets help protect the eyes and face in numerous ways. For starters, the helmet helps block the spatter of welding sparks and spatter produced during the welding process from reaching the eyes, face and head. Helping to protect the eyes from exceptionally bright light and rapid changes in brightness is another safety benefit of a welding helmet. Without protection, eyes can be temporarily or permanently injured by the intensity of light produced by welding. Eyes also have difficulty adjusting to rapid brightness changes while welding in dark locations, which can be both a productivity and safety issue. The helmet’s design allows for compatibility with select disposable welding respirators, including the 3M™ 8515, 8212, 8214, 8512, and 8514 Particulate Welding Respirators, to help provide respiratory protection for applications where metal fumes may be present. This durable and versatile welding helmet also meets the requirements of CSA Z94.3 and the high impact requirements of ANSI Z87.1-2010.

Product description

The Speedglas 9100X with sidewindows, shades 8-13, sensitivity adjustment allows use with all Stick, MIG and TIG processes, also has grinding and torch modes. New headgear makes this helmet extremely comfortable and versatile. Viewing area 9.12 sq in.

From the Manufacturer

3M™ Speedglas™ Welding Helmet 9100 with Side Windows and Auto Darkening Filter helps provide professional-grade eye and face protection from debris and harmful radiation including visible light, ultra-violet radiation (UV), infra-red radiation (IR), and sparks and spatter. Side windows with shade 5 filters increase your field of vision. While offering high-level protection, this welding helmet also delivers on comfort, which can help to increase on-the-job worker satisfaction and productivity.

With a viewing area of 2.1 inches high x 4.2 inches wide (54 mm x 107 mm), the 9100X provides the second largest viewing area available in the 9100 Series helmets, and an improved field of view that helps the welder to see the work in progress with minimal obstruction.

Three sensors in the lens activate the auto-darkening filter when an arc is struck.

The helmet’s battery life is approximately 2,500 hours.

From the Manufacturer

3M™ Speedglas™ Welding Helmet 9100 FX with Side Windows and Auto Darkening Filter is a flip-up combination of an auto-darkening welding helmet and a protective visor. This system helps provide professional-grade eye and face protection from debris and harmful radiation including visible light, ultra-violet radiation (UV), infra-red radiation (IR), and sparks and spatter. The helmet offers a large viewing area and side windows with shade 5 filters increase your peripheral field of vision. A spark- and spatter-resistant headcover is also standard on all 3M Speedglas Welding Series 9100 FX Helmets. While offering high-level protection, this welding helmet also delivers on comfort, which helps to boost on-the-job worker satisfaction and productivity.

With a viewing area of 1.8 inches high x 3.7 inches wide (45 mm x 93 mm), the 9100V provides the third largest viewing area available in the 9100 Series helmets, and a field of view that helps the welder to see the work in progress with minimal obstruction.

Three sensors in the lens activate the auto-darkening filter when an arc is struck. The lens then switches from light to dark shade in approximately 0.1 milliseconds (1/10,000 of a second), giving the welder an instant transition from light to dark shade while maintaining an optimal view for torch placement and weld puddle control. The auto darkening filter reduces the need to flip the welding helmet up and down between torch placements, which can boost productivity by reducing the stop-and-start time needed with passive lens welding helmets. This feature also can reduce neck stain from “helmet nodding,” while greatly increasing the accuracy of electronic placement. This, in turn, can also reduce the need for grinding and rework, saving time, effort and money. The helmet’s battery life is approximately 2,800 hours. The two Cr2030 3V lithium batteries that power the Auto-Darkening filter are easily accessible and replaceable, extending the helmet life.

Flip-up design eliminates the need to remove the helmet for non-welding tasks

Designed for ultimate worker convenience, this welding helmet allows you to position the auto darkening filter down for welding and flip it up for other tasks. When the auto darkening filter is flipped up, eyes and face are still protected from debris, chips, dust, sparks and other objects by a clear protective visor, which is curved to maximize peripheral vision. You get a clear, 8” x 4.25” (17 x 10 cm) view, which is enables for precision grinding and inspection in low light conditions. This wide field of view allows workers to see better and maintain high productivity on the job. Convenience is a main benefit of the flip-up welding helmet because it allows workers to handle non-welding tasks without removing the helmet or supplementing an additional face shield. For added worker protection, a spark- and spatter-resistant fabric head cover is standard on all 3M™ Speedglas™ Welding Helmet Series 9100 FX models.
