13 best co gas detectors
A carbon monoxide (CO) gas detector is a device designed to monitor and alert individuals to the presence of carbon monoxide gas in indoor environments. Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that can be lethal when inhaled in high concentrations. These detectors are crucial for ensuring the safety of occupants in homes, workplaces, and other enclosed spaces. Here's what you need to know about CO gas detectors:
Functionality: CO gas detectors are designed to continuously monitor the air for the presence of carbon monoxide. They operate by sensing the concentration of CO gas and emitting an alarm when it reaches a dangerous level.
Detection Method: Most CO detectors use electrochemical sensors, metal oxide semiconductor sensors, or biomimetic sensors to detect carbon monoxide gas. These sensors can accurately measure CO levels and trigger an alarm when they exceed safe limits.
Placement: It is essential to place CO detectors in areas where carbon monoxide may be produced, such as near gas appliances (furnaces, stoves, water heaters), fireplaces, and attached garages. Multiple detectors may be required for larger homes or buildings.
Alarms: When a CO detector detects elevated levels of carbon monoxide, it typically emits a loud audible alarm and may also have visual indicators, such as flashing lights. This alerts occupants to the potential danger and prompts them to evacuate the premises.
Power Sources: CO detectors can be battery-powered, plug-in, or hardwired into a building's electrical system. Battery-powered detectors are portable and continue to function during power outages, making them a reliable choice.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance is essential to ensure the proper functioning of CO detectors. This includes periodic testing of the alarm, replacing batteries (if applicable), and cleaning the unit to prevent dust buildup.
Compliance: Some regions have regulations requiring the installation of CO detectors in residential and commercial buildings. It is important to check local building codes and regulations to ensure compliance.
Safety: Carbon monoxide is a silent but deadly gas that can cause symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, nausea, and, in severe cases, death. CO detectors are critical for detecting leaks from faulty heating systems, gas appliances, or blocked vents, providing early warning to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
In summary, CO gas detectors are vital safety devices that monitor indoor air for the presence of carbon monoxide, alerting occupants to potential hazards. Proper placement, maintenance, and compliance with local regulations are essential to ensure the effectiveness of these devices in safeguarding lives and property.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is the leading cause of accidental poisoning deaths in America, yet many people don't know they are suffering from CO poisoning until its too late. Since symptoms of CO poisoning are like the flu, you might not even know you're in danger at first. That's why a carbon monoxide alarm is an excellent way to protect your family. It can detect the CO you can't see, smell or taste in the air.
The First Alert GCO1CN combination explosive gas and carbon monoxide alarm uses an electrochemical carbon monoxide sensor-the most accurate technology available. It also detects natural gas, methane gas, and propane gas. Installation is as simple as plugging it in to any wall outlet or mounting it above an outlet and plugging in the higher line cord. Its easy-to-read large digital display gives you a clear readout of current hazard and levels. A peak level button alerts you to the highest level of explosive gas or carbon monoxide detected. The alarm includes a battery back-up giving you peace of mind in a power outage. The test/silence button both silences a non-threatening alarm or low battery warning and allows you to test the unit's functionality. Question: | We have an enclosed garage that is more of a "play room." Can I install this unit in a garage? The Kiddie Alarms state you can't use them in a garag |
Answer: | I cannot plug mine in anymore it immediately alerts “GAS”. Very disappointing. It’s only a couple years old. I would expect for his price they last longer and/or have a better return policy. |
Question: | Has anyone had false alarms? My alarm which is s couple. Of years. Old went off saying GAS but there was no trace of gas in the house |
Answer: | I had a major lp gas leak in the gas line inside my walls and this unit never registered anything. Don't waste your money. Fortunately, I believed what I thought I smelled and called the gas company. |
Question: | Does this unit works for LP propane gas leak |
Answer: | No. But the company denies there is a problem. If your unit is within the warranty period, they will replace it with another one that drains the battery. Then they deny there is a problem. |
Question: | Has anyone found out why this detector drains the battery within hours even if it's a brand new battery and it's plugged into the wall |
Answer: | yes |

The Dangers of Carbon Monoxide, Methane, and Propane Exposure
The leading cause of accidental poisoning deaths in North America, carbon monoxide (CO) is often referred to as the silent killer because it's odorless, tasteless, and invisible. Carbon monoxide poisoning can come about via a number of sources, including everyday items and appliances in your home or office. And because symptoms of CO poisoning mimic the flu or other common illnesses it can often go undiagnosed.
Likewise, methane and propane gases are commonly used in homes for cooking, heating, and water heating. Although it happens rarely, gas leaks can sometimes occur inside the home, increasing the risk of fire or explosion.
Audible Alarm Pattern Alerts you to Elevated CO and Gas Levels
When placed on every level of your home, alarms like the KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk can help protect everyone in the house by giving you an unmistakable signal when gas levels have reached an unhealthy point. If unhealthy levels of CO are detected, the alarm will emit four quick audible beeps every five seconds until either levels decrease or the reset button is pressed. If methane gas or propane gas is detected, the alarm will emit beeps every other second with "GAS" shown in the display.
Easy-to-Read Digital Display Shows CO Levels
The KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk is preferred among traditional CO and explosive gas alarms because of its digital display. This display clearly shows levels of CO that the unit has detected and stored-- from 30 to 999 ppm--and it updates every 15 seconds to indicate any abrupt changes or alarming trends. The display also shows the peak CO level recorded by the alarm since it was last reset or unplugged. The continuous display also shows if gas is present.
LED Shows Sensor Status
With the KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk, you never have to wonder if the sensor is functioning properly. A blinking dot in the lower right-hand corner of the display denotes normal operation, so you can trust that it's working. In addition, you can test alarm function by pressing the test/reset button at any time to verify that the horn and electric circuitry are operating properly.
Convenient Mounting Options
The KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk has a low-profile design that makes it suitable for any room in your home. The detector can be plugged into any standard A/C outlet; it's plug can be snapped into the back of the unit and can be rotated so the alarm remains vertical, independent of whether the electrical socket is mounted vertically or horizontally. In addition, the alarm comes with a 6-foot extension cord, so the unit can be plugged into the wall outlet and then placed on a table or shelf. For the most thorough protection, place an alarm on every level of your home.
The UL-listed Kidde KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk has a seven-year life and is backed by a five-year limited warranty.

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the sound level I need one for basement and need to hear on ground floor |
Answer: | Dear cutomer, excuse that this prodcut Y301 can't detect hydrogen gas, it's mainly sensitive for methane and propane. thank you very much |
Question: | is this an explosive gas and carbon monoxide detector? it only says "carbon monoxide detector" on the actual product |
Answer: | Don't worry, it's normal, the large moisture change can affect the sensor performance, and may lead to false alarm, but the data on display only switch to 1,2 or 3, but won;t trigger the voice and light alarm. If the data become 5 or more than 5, voice and light alarm will be triggered. Thank you very much and best regards. |
Question: | No manual included. Do I just plug it in and test it? What does it display if gas is detected? Thanks fellow Amazoners |
Answer: | HI Niran, it's sensitive to methane and propane. We think it can't used to monitor and detect CO. thank you vey much |
Question: | I smell natural gas in my house, and am wondering if that is the same as explosive gas? Will it detect natural gas |
Answer: | Dear Karen, temporarily the Y301 doesn't get UL certification, it passed CE, FCC, EMC and RoHs. We are applying US ETL certification which is equivalent to UL certification. Thank you very much and best regards. |

User questions & answers
Question: | i'm replacing a 5 year old unit that is marked 12vdc 82ma. all i see for sale is 12vdc 108ma. any problem with this scenario |
Answer: | Small potatoes. These ma are small, in any event and i'd go for it. What surprised me is that my old and new - identical - units had the same amperage. Is the old unit real identical to this one? |
Question: | How many amps does this pull |
Answer: | I dont know, but the wire size is not all that big. Some versions of this are 9v battery powered which also suggests low current draw. |
Question: | What is the actual hole size that it fits into?? The measurements shown seem a little larger than the one I need to replace |
Answer: | The actual hole size that the back of the unit fits into is 5 1/4 inches by 2 inches. The hole is just a little bit bigger than the back of the unit. The outside front dimensions of the unit are 5 5/16 inch by 2 13/16. The unit takes awhile to actually start working. After installation and applying power the green light will blink for a good while before it goes steady green which indicates it is operating correctly. Do not try cleaning dust and dirt from the unit using a can of compressed air. I did and that is what made mine go bad. |
Question: | Is this unit hard wired, and how big is the back ? I am replacing another unit |
Answer: | Yes, this unit is meant to be hard-wired into a 12volt system. I'm planning to install it in my travel trailer tomorrow. The section that goes into the wall = 5 3/8"L x 1 7/8"W x 1 3/16"D (front panel that sits on the wall surface ~ 1/8" thick). |

Question: | Will this co alarm expire in 5-7 years like most other co alarms |
Answer: | It will last 10 years according to the warranty and user manual. Ten years after initial power-up, this unit will “chirp” twice every 30 seconds to indicate that it is time to replace the alarm. A label has been provided on the side of the alarm that has “Replace by” printed on it. Write the replace by date on the label. The date written on the label should be ten (10) years after the alarm was initially powered. This alarm does have end of life Hush® which allows you to silence the trouble chirp for two days giving you extra time to replace the unit when it is more convenient. To activate, press the test/reset button. While in the End of Life Hush® mode, will still detect CO and Smoke. This feature can only be used for 30 days from the time the unit first indicates end of life. At the end of the 30 day period the alarm cannot be hushed and must be replaced immediately. |
Question: | I want to replace all my Kidde 1276 detectors. I want one of the new ones to also be CO2 detector. Is this unit compatible with the |
Answer: | Yes. You can see that in the owner's manual. http://dms.hvacpartners.com//docs/2001/Public/0B/User-Guide-KN-COPE-I-ENG-(2528.pdf |
Question: | Can i replace a kidde p12040 (hardwired smoke detector) with this model (hardwired combo)? same company and same 3 pins on the back |
Answer: | I'm fairly sure you can. They even offer adapters that allowed them to replace my old Firex wired-in detectors. |
Question: | We have these in a 165 room hotel. They are not lasting. I have had to replace 6 and need another 6 today. What recourse do we have |
Answer: | Welcome to the club, I have been having the same problem only on a much smaller scale. Try contacting Kidde and see what they say, however if you read the installation instructions that come with each unit it states they only last 7 - 10 years before having to be replaced. I believe that is from the date of manufacture (the units are marked) and not the install date. The units I replaced are right at the low end of the replacement dates. Good luck. |

Answer: | If you go to the kidde.com website and find support for this model, select the "Documents" tab and both the information sheet and manual are available for download. |
Question: | Where can i pull up a copy of the owner`s manual for kiddie model kn-coeg |
Answer: | The manufacturer's technical specifications for this unit indicate that the unit is designed to detect natural gas and propane, which are the two most common type of gas used in heating and cooking in residential settings. Hydrogen gas is not a part of the specification. |
Question: | Will it detect hydrogen gas (as in a battery bank charging |
Answer: | Virtually all explosive gas monitors employ a heating element as part of their design. Because of this, such devices must be plugged into a household outlet. If they are unplugged or there is a power outage, the battery will typically allow the unit to run for up to a day or two (depending on the make and model), but then the battery will die. So the answer is no. This unit in particular will only last about one day on battery power, at which point the unit will stop working and the battery will have to be replaced. In addition, many devices, including this one, must have a good battery installed for backup or they will not operate. Hope this helps. |
Question: | can they be run on battery only??? and not plugged in |
Answer: | For a light rod the line is 2-6 pound test. For the medium rod it is 8-20 pound test line. |

User questions & answers
Question: | When I unplug this device the green light goes off even though the batteries are installed as a backup. Is that normal |
Answer: | It's about 5 1/2 in from hinge to hinge ~ 14.5 cm. It does provide full cover. The foam is flush with my face without being uncomfortable. It however is not waterproof. The foam has air slots so it can breathe. I've used these for Chemistry lab as well as wood working, and they work great. |
Question: | When I try put battery in or plug it in, the alarm goes off! Does that alarm sound stop? It's brand new |
Answer: | They stay on surprisingly well! I use them for my dog grooming business. They are light weight so that works good for me. They might be a bit too light for sports. If you got hit with a ball they would probably crack and potentially cut you. |
Question: | How do you turn on the "low battery hush |
Answer: | Yes, it should do a good job to keep out drywall dust. However, I ended up removing it due to condensation buildup while using it |
Question: | What is the location of the wall plug on the device? Will it cover the entire outlet |
Answer: | yes they can fit over Rx glasses but I don't recommend because they became blurring and you will not see very well |

Product description
The First Alert SCO5CN Combination Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm features dual sensors to detect both smoke and carbon monoxide in a single device. A photoelectric sensor detects the smoke most often produced by smoldering fires, and minimizes false alarms from cooking smoke or shower steam. Additionally, the advanced electrochemical CO sensor detects carbon monoxide leaks from multiple sources, such as faulty fuel burning appliances, blocked chimneys, and generators running inside or too close to homes. A loud, 85 decibel siren alerts you to the threat; unique alarm sounds and indicator lights on its face distinguish a smoke warning from a carbon monoxide warning. This carbon monoxide and smoke detector is battery operated, so you don't need an electrician for installation. Requiring just two AA batteries and featuring an easy access battery compartment for quick changes, this smoke and carbon monoxide detector has a single button that allows you to silence a false alarm or test the unit.
The First Alert SCO5CN carbon monoxide and smoke alarm uses an electrochemical carbon monoxide sensor-the most accurate technology available. The alarm uses photoelectric smoke sensing technology which is environmentally friendlier and which reduces nuisance alarms, making it ideal for cooking areas. It is also great for sensing slow smoldering fires quickly. The permanent sensors last the lifetime of the alarm. The test/silence button both silences a non-threatening alarm or low battery warning and allows you to test the unit's functionality. A low battery signal alerts you to replace the battery and end-of-life alarm of three chirps alerts you to replace the unit. Two AA batteries are included. 5-year limited warranty. UL listed. Not available for sale in Massachusetts.--Bree Norlander

User questions & answers
Question: | pack is $30, 2 pack is $90. Why is a two pack so much? I thought the idea was to incentivize more product at a lower cost. This is halarious |
Answer: | I no longer live in the apartment where I replaced the old smoke alarm, but you will love this one. It's so nice to flip the battery holder down and not have to remove the battery from the unit. |
Question: | Advice on false alarms? Goes off every week or so. It's in our kitchen/living room, but goes off even when we are not cooking. Goes 1 min then stops |
Answer: | No |
Question: | I have these througout my house and rental unit. Installed them about 7 years ago and many malfunctioning. Any durability mprovments since 7 yrs ago |
Answer: | The instructions that come with the unit duplicate what I have read from several Fire Department sources: you can place your unit on the ceiling, but AT LEAST 4 inches (10cm) from the wall. If you want to mount it on the wall, mount it MORE THAN 4 inches (10cm) BELOW the ceiling, but NO LOWER than12 inches (30cm) below the ceiling. It has to be high enough up the wall to "smell" the smoke, but that 4 x 4 inch (10cm x 10cm) area where the wall meets the ceiling can sometimes harbor a "dead zone" of still air where the smoke would NOT reach the detector quickly enough during a fire to warn you in time. Thus, do NOT mount your detectors too close to where the wall meets the ceiling. |
Question: | How long do batteries last |
Answer: | Ionization type. I actually looked at at manual to be certain. |
