13 best pneumatic framing nail gun
A pneumatic framing nail gun is a power tool used in construction and carpentry for quickly and efficiently driving nails into wooden structures. It falls under the category of framing nailers and is a popular choice among professionals and DIY enthusiasts for framing walls, constructing roofs, and other heavy-duty carpentry tasks. Here are the key points you should know about pneumatic framing nail guns:
Power Source: Pneumatic framing nail guns are powered by compressed air. They require an air compressor to supply the necessary air pressure to operate. The compressed air is used to drive the nails into the wood with force.
Nail Types: These nail guns use specially designed framing nails that are collated together in a strip or coil. The nails used are typically larger and thicker than those used in finish nailers or brad nailers, making them suitable for heavy-duty framing and structural work.
Common Uses: Pneumatic framing nail guns are primarily used for framing applications, such as framing walls, building decks, constructing roofs, and installing structural components in residential and commercial construction. They can drive nails into wooden framing members quickly and with precision.
Types of Nails: The nails used in framing nailers are typically available in various lengths and gauges to accommodate different framing needs.Common nail sizes include 2 inches to 3.5 inches in length.
Depth Adjustment: Many pneumatic framing nail guns come with depth adjustment features, allowing you to control how deeply the nails are driven into the wood. This feature is crucial for achieving the desired level of nail penetration without over-penetrating or under-penetrating the material.
Sequential and Bump Firing Modes: Most framing nailers offer both sequential and bump firing modes. In sequential mode, you must press the trigger for each nail, ensuring precise placement. In bump firing mode, the nailer fires a nail each time it comes into contact with the workpiece, which allows for faster nailing but requires greater care to maintain accuracy.
Safety Features: Safety is a paramount concern when using any nail gun. Pneumatic framing nailers often include safety mechanisms such as trigger locks, safety tips, and anti-dry fire features to prevent accidental discharges and injuries.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance of the nail gun and the air compressor is essential for optimal performance and longevity. This includes lubricating moving parts, cleaning the tool, and ensuring the air supply is free from contaminants.
Safety Gear: When using a pneumatic framing nail gun, it's crucial to wear appropriate safety gear, including safety glasses or a face shield, hearing protection, and work gloves.
In summary, a pneumatic framing nail gun is a powerful and versatile tool used in construction and carpentry for driving framing nails into wooden structures. It offers efficiency and precision, making it a valuable asset for framing and structural work in residential and commercial projects.

User questions & answers
Question: | will it take any brand of nails |
Answer: | I have used two different brands so far. As long as the nails are plastic coated, 21 degree I believe any brand would work. The best prices I have found on nails is at harbor freight. 2500 nails for around $28. I have used 2 1/2" and 3 1/2" |
Question: | How come just below the nailer specs they say "often bought with this product"....22 degree nails....not |
Answer: | I used some of the 22 degree without a problem. I've used Bostich guns for 30 years prior to this gun & this is as good as any I've used.t's a great nailer |
Question: | do the nails have to be plastic coated |
Answer: | Plastic coated? No. But I do believe they have to be Plastic Collated, that is, they need to be bound together with plastic. I'm not sure if paper collated nails will work. |
Question: | What kind of air compressor do you recommend for this nailer |
Answer: | It really depends on how you're using it. If you're intermittently nailing with in and not imitating a machine gun- you can use a pancake or similar small compressor. The working pressure of the nailer is 70-115 PSI. I run mine at 100 PSI. Any portable compressor should be able to hit that pressure. The real question is duty cycle. If you're nailing every few seconds then you'll need a compressor capable of keeping up with the volume of air being consumed OR you'll have to slow down until your compressor stops running before firing the next nail. I run mine on 2 different compressors and don't have any issues- one is a 40 gallon shop compressor- the CFM is infinite compared to the gun. The other compressor is 2.6 CFM. I don't rapid fire when I'm using it and I can fire several nails before the compressor has to cycle. As long as you're not continuing to fire when the compressor is running you should be OK. |

Numax 21º Full Head Framing Nailer
It's time to tackle a new project - and we have just the tool to get it done. The SFR2190 is perfect for framing, but did you know you can also use a framing nailer to install sub-floors, roof decking, wood fencing, sheathing, and more? We designed this nailer with you in mind, so it has all of the premium features you need to get started.
Step 1: Choose Firing Mode
Your framing nailer comes with a black single-fire trigger already assembled. This is the best choice if you haven't used a framing nailer before, or if you want accurate nail placement.
Follow the manual instructions to install the red bump-fire trigger if you want quick successive firing.
Step 2: Connect to Compressor
Set your compressor to 70 PSI and use the quick-connect fitting on your air hose to connect your framing nailer. If you have a really dense material, you can increase the pressure up to 115 PSI.
Put a few drops of oil into the fitting before connecting to a compressor to keep things running smoothly!
Step 3: Load Nails
Pull the side lever back along the magazine until it snaps into place.
Drop the nails into the open channel on the top of the magazine. The angle of the nails should match the angle of the nose of the nailer.
Lift the lever at the back of the magazine to release the side lever and secure the nails.
Step 4: Adjust and Go!
This nailer is loaded with features that let you customize for any project. Change the depth adjust, 360º air exhaust, or remove the no-mar tip for extra holding power.
Pro Tip: Use piece of scrap material to test out your nailer before starting on the real thing!
21º Plastic Collated Full-Head Framing Nails
A 'plastic collated nail' just means that the nails are held together with a thin strip of plastic. They are great for DIY projects because there are no issues with glue or sharp pieces of metal flying around when you're working. We suggest you use 21º nails for the best performance, but the SFR2190 can use any nail from 20º - 22º. The magazine fits nails from 2" to 3-1/2" long and is compatible with any generic brand, which is perfect if you have nails left over from other projects! If you don't have any leftover nails, we've listed some fasteners here that have worked for our customers in the past.

User questions & answers
Question: | Aside from the name, is there any difference between this and the hitachi nr90aes |
Answer: | Good morning, No difference at all. Same exact tool other than the name. Have a wonderful day :) |
Question: | Can u use this gun to use on concrete wall faring strips |
Answer: | This gun shoots a plastic collated nail with the angle of the nails at 21 degrees. It shoots up to a 3 1/2” nail. It will shoot nails into wood but not concrete. Hope this helps! |
Question: | Can the air inlet fitting be changed to a different size? my compressor (craftsman cmec6150) has 1/4" npt. nailer has 3/8" inlet |
Answer: | Absolutely, it will allow more air flow with less pressure. |
Question: | Does this nailer take 22 degrees nails |
Answer: | The variance on the 20-22 Degree Nailers is 19.5 to 22 Degrees. There is no separate difference between any of these tools that are designed for 20 Degree Plastic Collated FRH Nails. Anybody who makes a statement otherwise does not know what they are talking about, or has bought some bad nails in the past and it got blamed on the 1 Degree difference. First off, unlike Senco, Bostitch and Paslode, who manufacture most of their Nails or govern the quality of the spec, most manufacturers of pneumatics do not manufacture their own nails, they source to the lowest bidder, which means you can get some real junk. You get what you pay for. Most of the North American produced product is of good quality. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is it true that the hammer is only "positive placement" for nails up to 2.5" long |
Answer: | Yes, pp tip for nails up to 2.5" in length. Framing tip for up to 3.5" |
Question: | How is it powered? Is it pneumatic or battery operated and/or use compressed gas cylinders |
Answer: | It is pneumatic. I've been using a 6 gal Campbell Hausfeld compressor with 1/4" quick disconnects at about 90 - 100 psi for metal connectors and 16d nails and have never run out of air. I bought it mainly for the metal connector ability, which it does great, but is also great for down to 6d nails. Just turn down the pressure on the smaller nails. |
Question: | Is it difficult to find nails for this hammer |
Answer: | Metal connector nails need to be larger around to fit properly in the holes and have the shear strength. If the nail is longer than 2-1/2 inches the gun will not fire by design. I can only find the 1-1/2 21 degree nails on Amazon and Home Depot online. They are expensive, but surprisingly, I tried some 33 degree 1-1/2 inch nails in this gun and it fires normal. I don't see any wear as a result either. I would not try this with longer 33 degree nails because they would angle out of reach of the driver. The gun out performs my old Senco SN60 by a large margin, is lighter, but about an inch taller. |
Question: | What is the difference between a round head and a clipped head nailer |
Answer: | The round head is the traditional type nail you would find in a box or bin of nails. The clipped head is the round head clipped off to the width of the nail shank on two sides--does not had the holding power of the round head. |

Answer: | I 2nd that motion! |
Question: | Does it shoot the plastic strips and nails |
Answer: | I believe it is a translation error from Taiwanese to English. It is pneumatic so you will need a compressor. User questions & answers
Question: | Any suggestions on a pancake compressor for these guns |
Answer: | Mines not a pancake compressor, but it is around the same size. I have a 2.6 gallon 2 HP compressor that works beautifully with these guns. It fills to 120 psi, and I have a regulator on the compressor that allows 80-90 psi through, depending on the gun I am using at the time. I can usually shoot 20-30 nails before it has to get more pressure built up, but never dropping below 90 psi. Since the tank is so small, it takes only seconds to fill again. I'm not sure what the rules are on linking to other items, but I bought the compressor off Amazon. |
Question: | should you use a water separator or oiler with nail guns |
Answer: | The only specification with the Freeman nail guns is to provide oil to the system. So I have only been oiling since water is not a problem in the air system I'm using. Some of the air supply systems I have used previously needed a water separator. If you are not sure about the amount of water in your system a water separator might be a very good addition. |
Question: | Has anyone had trouble with these nail guns working right |
Answer: | I have been using my framing gun 3 days out of the week as I continue to remodel my house. I have used the 15 gauge and 18 gauge guns just as much without any problems. I don't know if it's related to the setup and continuos maintenance but I have a filter on the compressor and use the air tool oil. I never exceed 120 psi on my framing gun and I adjust to 75 to 90 for the other guns. I continue to have good service from these tools. |
Question: | what kind of nails does it use |
Answer: | I use Hitachi fasteners. GEt mine at Lowe's. Used the Stapler and Angle Finish Nailer today. Built our 16'x16' deck with the Framing nailer. Great set of tools. That's why the pros turn to the proven performance, durability and driving power only a Paslode pneumatic framing nailer can provide. This low-recoil nailer offers a center of gravity close to the trigger for great balance and less arm fatigue. When used with Paslode framing nails, this nailing system's heavy-duty power can frame walls faster, helping get jobs done on time, every time.
The Paslode F-350S PowerMaster Plus 30-Degree Framing Nailer is a reliable workhorse that no jobsite should be without. Offering an unmatched combination of power, comfort, and durability, this heavy-duty pneumatic nailer is the perfect tool for framers, general contractors, custom homebuilders, and remodelers. Delivering more than 10% more power-per-pound than the competition, the PowerMaster Plus easily drives nails through engineered lumber, so it will make short work of everything from framing and sheathing to fence and deck construction.
|
![]() Center of gravity is close to the trigger for optimal balance. |
![]() Compact size easily fits between 16" joists, rafters, and on-center studs. |
Ideal for professional framing work, the PowerMaster Plus drives 2" to 3-1/2" 30-degree clipped and full-head papertape nails with .113" - .131" diameters in engineered lumber, so you can handle decking, sub-assembly blocking, sheathing, and trussing of all types. And when you're tackling a big job, you'll be grateful for the PowerMaster Plus's high-capacity one-piece aluminum magazine, which holds up to 84 nails (two strips).
Sequential Operation for Greater Efficiency
With the PowerMaster Plus you can choose either manual or sequential operation and drive up to 12 nails per second--the barrel-shaped nose will ensure an easy line of sight when nailing. To keep things simple, a durable work contact element adjusts on the tool--not the compressor--for precise depth of drive, so you'll be sure to get the right depth for the job. To top it off, the contact element is specially designed to securely grip wood during toenailing.
Big Power in a Compact Package
Weighing just 8.4 pounds and operating at 80-120 psi (5.5-8.3 bar), the PowerMaster Plus delivers over 10% more power per pound than the competition. Offering all the muscle you need to drive through engineered lumber. This tool is surprisingly easy to handle.
To save you time and energy, the PowerMaster Plus features an ergonomic design that places the center of gravity close to the trigger, providing optimal balance and the lowest recoil of a tool of its size. And with a soft-grip handle, it's comfortable to hold, even during all-day jobs.
Incredibly compact, the PowerMaster Plus has a height of just 13.3", so it will easily fit between 16" joists, rafters, and on-center studs. A rafter hook--which is located on the magazine and can be moved out of the way when it's not needed--makes it easy to hang the PowerMaster Plus on your tool belt, ladder, or rafter.
For further ease of use, this pneumatic nailer features an adjustable air-deflector cap and a main valve that improves airflow and performance over a wide range of operating conditions. A bolt-on-end plug makes for quick service and secure compressor attachments.
The PowerMaster Plus is backed by a 90-day limited warranty on wear parts, a six-month limited warranty on magazine parts, and a one-year limited warranty on housing and cap parts.

User questions & answers
Question: | I understand this does not come with any air fittings, so what are people using? 1/4" fittings with 3/8" hoses or 3/8" fittings with 1/2" hoses |
Answer: | This comes with s reducer bushing which I used and am using 1/4" fitting and 1/4" hose without any issues. |
Question: | Is any of the paslode make for plastic collated nails |
Answer: | No. All paper. |
Question: | Nail gun misfires why |
Answer: | When you load nails into the magazine, don't let the magazine slide ram into the nails. It seems a lot of people think it is ok to release the slide at the bottom without guiding it with there hand. The speed and momentum of the slide, unattended will crush the paper back between the nails and cause misalignment when it reaches the firing mechanism. Which results in many misfires. Straight nail magazines will misfire much less. |
Question: | Can this be used for baseboards or doing cabinets |
Answer: | The smallest nail is 2" x .113 -- definitely not for cabinets or any finish work..... |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the typical "framing" use of 2 inch nails? I've been using the 3 1/2 inch ones for framing interior walls |
Answer: | IF the nailer you mentioned uses 21deg full head nails ... yes. I had a numax framing nailer that I used these nails in but I am not sure of the model number of the nailer. The nailer broke after about 5 days of use so I sent it back to Amazon and bought a Porter cable nailer to replace it. These nails also work in that nail gun. |
Question: | Will these nails work with numax sfr2190 nailer |
Answer: | Check the specs on your gun and then specs on nails. Ex.... Degree and nail size then you know |
Question: | Can i use these nails for my porta cable framming gun |
Answer: | What is the question? I don't understand. (porter?) |
Question: | porter |
Answer: | 15 gauge. I use them in a Craftsman 15g 1 1/4" - 2 1/2" in-line angle finish nailer. |
