12 best flooring nails

Flooring nails are specially designed nails used in the installation of various types of flooring materials, including hardwood, laminate, engineered wood, and some types of tile. These nails are an integral part of the flooring installation process, and they are typically used in conjunction with flooring nailers or nail guns. Here's what you need to know about flooring nails:

  1. Purpose: Flooring nails are designed to securely fasten flooring materials to the subfloor or underlayment. They provide a strong and reliable connection that helps prevent flooring from shifting or coming loose over time.

  2. Types of Flooring Nails:

    • Cleat Nails: These are T-shaped nails with barbs along the sides. They are commonly used for hardwood flooring installations. The barbs on the cleat nails help to hold the flooring material firmly in place.
    • Staple Nails: Flooring staples are similar to cleat nails but have a flatter profile. They are often used for engineered wood and some hardwood flooring installations.
    • Brad Nails: Brad nails are thinner and smaller than cleat nails and are suitable for thinner or more delicate flooring materials, such as engineered wood or laminate.
  3. Size and Length: The size and length of the flooring nails you use will depend on the thickness and type of flooring material you are installing. It's crucial to choose the right size to ensure a secure and lasting installation.

  4. Flooring Nailers: Flooring nailers are specialized power tools designed to drive flooring nails into the flooring material at the correct angle and depth. There are manual and pneumatic (air-powered) flooring nailers available, and they are compatible with different types of flooring nails.

  5. Installation Process: When using a flooring nailer, the nail is inserted into the nailer's magazine, and the tool is positioned at the desired angle on the flooring material. When the trigger is pulled, the nailer drives the nail into the material and the subfloor simultaneously, creating a tight connection.

  6. Spacing: Proper nail spacing is crucial to prevent warping or buckling of the flooring. The manufacturer's guidelines or the flooring material's installation instructions should be followed for recommended nail spacing.

  7. Finishing: After the flooring installation is complete, any visible nail heads are typically covered with wood filler or putty, and the floor is sanded and finished to achieve a smooth, seamless appearance.

  8. Safety: Safety precautions should be observed when using flooring nailers and nails. Safety glasses and hearing protection are often recommended, especially when working with pneumatic nailers that produce loud noise.

In conclusion, flooring nails are specialized fasteners used in flooring installations, and they come in various types and sizes to suit different flooring materials. Proper selection and installation of flooring nails are essential for achieving a durable and visually appealing floor surface. When used in conjunction with flooring nailers, they make the installation process more efficient and accurate.

User questions & answers

Question: Are these 2 inch or 1 1/4 inch nails
Answer: Yes the product is 2 inch
Question: Just want to confirm these are 2" since the heading doesn't match the description
Answer: I have the same gun. Home Depot by my told me 1 1/2. Floor has been down for a year and has been fine . Did some more reading and tossed 2 inch in. I would go with 2
Question: Am just about to order this 445 pawer nail gun to install 3/4 " hard wood floor. What size nail is best to use 2" or
Answer: We used these on 3/4 white oak, which has a similar hardness to hickory. However, if you can, I would use a longer nail (2-1/4 to 2-1/2) for extra holding power to the subfloor. We needed to use the slightly shorter 2" length since we were nailing into OSB subfloor with radiant heat pex tubes on the underside and didn't want to risk hitting those pex lines. We installed ourselves (amateur DYIers) and were in a bit of a rush to get the flooring in. There are now several gaps between boards likely due to the radiant heat and the wood not being entirely acclimated to the heat. However, another factor could be the length of the nail not holding as well as needed. On another floor we installed the same 3/4 white oak using 2-1/4 cleats but not over radiant heat with no gaps after a couple years. Good luck.
Question: Are these suitable for 3/4in hickory
Answer: Fits in Porta-Nails brand flooring nailers. Floor nailers use a completely different format from a standard nail gun. And most flooring nailers, beside Porta-Nails fire a staple, not a nail. I get these nails because they fit my old school 8 lb hammer powered manual nailer and I am cheap and was unemployed when I got them through amazon.

User questions & answers

Question: will these cleats work in 18 gauge norge cleat nailer
Answer: No. That model of Norge tool drives either 15-Gauge Staples or 16-Gauge Cleat nails. These are 18-Gauge cleat nails.
Question: Will these work with a Norge 10023320 nailer
Answer: Yes. I use these in my freeman 18 gauge flooring nailer.
Question: Will the powernailer 18 Gauge cleats work with a Freeman 18 Gauge nailer
Answer: Determining how many square feet a box of cleats will install is dependent upon how wide each of your floor boards are and what your nailing schedule is. A "Nailing Schedule" is how much space you leave between nail heads as you install a board. For instance, very narrow boards, like 2" oak strip flooring, can have a wide nail schedule; 8 to 10" between each nail. Wide Plank flooring (boards over 5" wide) require a much tighter schedule; 4 to 6". You can visit https://www.powernail.com/cool-tools/ to use our Cleat Calculator application. You will be asked to input your floor's width and your nail schedule to then have the calculator output the exact amount of fasteners that you need.
Question: How many square feet per box will the nails do
Answer: 16 Gauge.

User questions & answers

Question: can i purchase replacement baseplates
Answer: the base plate are non marring for 3/4 and 1/2 inch floors. They are made of some type of vey hard and slick plastic. I uses for prefinished 3/4 inch hardwoods. Not sure of your question, but both come with the tool and you will want one of them on when ever you are laying floors depending on the thickness of your floors.
Question: Description "non-marring base plates" are included. is that the protective foot attachment (m-4) for prefinished floors? not the same item
Answer: We installed 3" wide by 3/4" solid hardwood maple flooring with it and it worked Awesome !
Question: is it for solid harwood flooring
Answer: This tool is intended for the installation of new hardwood flooring, not to repair previously installed flooring, which squeaks, due to warping, or joist sagging. Old flooring will require some other type of repair, such as the use of screws and wood plugs to covers to them, or special ring shank nails.
Question: Will this stop creaks in an old hardwood floor
Answer: Used it to put down a large den floor, worked great! Would buy again!
