9 best scroll saw blade types

Scroll saws are versatile woodworking tools that use various types of blades to cut intricate curves, shapes, and patterns in wood, plastic, metal, and other materials. The choice of scroll saw blade type is crucial for achieving different cuts and achieving the desired results. Here's what you should know about scroll saw blade types:

  1. Skip-Tooth Blades:

    • These blades have a pattern of teeth with large gaps between them.
    • Skip-tooth blades are excellent for cutting soft materials like wood and plastic.
    • They reduce clogging and work well for fast, rough cuts.
  2. Double-Tooth Blades:

    • Double-tooth blades have pairs of teeth followed by a gap, which helps prevent burning on hardwoods.
    • They provide a smoother finish compared to skip-tooth blades.
  3. Crown-Tooth Blades:

    • Crown-tooth blades have a modified skip-tooth pattern with a slightly rounded top on the teeth.
    • They are versatile blades that work well for both soft and hardwoods and provide a clean cut.
  4. Spiral Blades:

    • Spiral blades have teeth that spiral around the blade, allowing cuts in any direction without the need to turn the workpiece.
    • These blades are ideal for intricate and complex patterns and are often used for detailed woodworking and crafts.
  5. Metal-Cutting Blades:

    • These blades are designed for cutting metal, such as aluminum or thin sheet metal.
    • They have smaller, closely spaced teeth to handle metal's hardness.
  6. Diamond Grit Blades:

    • Diamond grit blades have a coating of diamond particles, making them suitable for cutting glass, ceramics, and hard materials.
    • They are ideal for artistic and craft projects that involve glass or tile.
  7. Reverse Tooth Blades:

    • Reverse tooth blades have teeth pointing upward at the blade's bottom, which helps prevent splintering on the top surface of the workpiece.
    • They are commonly used for cutting veneer and plywood.
  8. Precision Ground Blades:

    • Precision ground blades are exceptionally sharp and provide a clean, splinter-free finish.
    • They are used for fine woodworking and intricate detail work.
  9. Metal-Piercing Blades:

    • Metal-piercing blades have a design that allows them to easily pierce through metal and other tough materials.
    • They are suitable for tasks like making holes in metal sheets.
  10. Blade Thickness:

    • Blades come in different thicknesses, often denoted by a number (e.g., #3, #5, #7).
    • Thinner blades are better for tight curves, while thicker blades are more durable for straight cuts.

When selecting a scroll saw blade, consider the material you'll be cutting, the complexity of the design, and the desired finish. Experimentation with different blade types and sizes is often necessary to achieve the best results for your specific project. Proper installation and tensioning of the blade are also crucial for accurate and safe scroll saw operation.

User questions & answers

Question: How long are these blades, will they fit a delta scroll saw
Answer: 8.5 x 3.5 x 1 in . Almost all blades fit almost all scroll saws.
Question: Will these blades fit in an 18” porter cable scroll saw
Answer: Some porter cable saws accept both plain and pin end blades. Without knowing the model # I cannot say for sure, but I am guessing it will.
Question: Will these fit the Dewalt DW788 scroll saw
Answer: These are 5" plain end blades so they will fit .
Question: Are these pinned end blades
Answer: No they are not pinned.
Question: Does this saw come with a stand
Answer: NO! Even though Delta and DeWalt are very similar, The DeWalt stand has to be adapted to fit the Delta saw. Takes a few minutes.
Question: What is the 'thing' on left side? How easy to change blade, need a tool? Disappointed no light, any available
Answer: That black tube thing on the left is an adjustable hose that blows puffs of air (generated I think from the up and down motion of the upper arm) which will help keep your lines clear of sawdust. Changing blades is a snap, simply loosen the thumb / wing screw on the top arm and the lower holder and slide out the blade. As for the light, I make due with a shop lamp that I have hanging from the ceiling of my garage. You can check woodcraft or rockler for magnetic portable lamps that may stick to the saw somewhere - not sure if its magnetic everywhere, never tried
Question: The saw is great but I can not get the hold down to stay in place. I move the wood and it also moves. Any thoughts
Answer: I removed mine even though it held just fine as I found that it got in my way. This was after I'd gotten used to the saw and the forces involved. I haven't had an issue using it without the hold down, but you have to do the holding down.
Question: There's such a price difference, what's the main difference between this saw and the dewalt dw
Answer: Only difference is some of the outside sheet metal, the inner workings are the same. You are paying for the Dewalt name. They both used to owned by the same company.
