User questions & answers
Question: | I have a 3/4' live male threaded end but lost the spur, I need to weld a spur to a bolt so need to know the diameter of the taper below the spur |
Answer: | just as cheap to buy a new one. weld wont hold if you put any strain on it |
Question: | I would like to know the dementions of the shaft that goes into the chuck I know its tapered but need to know big and small size thanks Jack |
Answer: | If you have a Morse taper 2 (available in MT1) it has a taper of .04995 per inch. The approximate sizes of the big end and small ends are: 0.572 and 0.700. Those will vary depending on the depth of the socket (it's not a chuck), the length of the shank, and other variables. The only thing hard and fast about it is the taper. |
Question: | I'm new to turning and would like to know if the "5/8 inch crown" is refering to the outside machined dimension at the bitting teeth end |
Answer: | It is to the outside of the device, not from center to the points of the teeth. I don't recommend that you buy this, though. The center point is spring loaded and eventually the set screw on the side will come undone and fling off in a random direction. Then, when you take the piece off the lathe, the center point and spring will fly out the end. If you're lucky, you don't have huge piles of sawdust and you're able to find the pieces and put it back together. |
Question: | My pin is also stuck. It was not from being dirty because I have never used it. Has anyone came up with a way to get the pin back out |
Answer: | That's easy to fix. On the side, just below the teeth, you will find a screw. That screw allows you to do three things. First, it allows you to take the pin out if you don't want to use it. Second, it allows you to lock the pin so it does not retract. And last, probably what you are interested in, it allows you to free up the pin so it slides up and down. When the pin is out you will notice a notch on one side. Make sure the screw and notch are lined up or the pin just might shoot out at you the next time you loosen it. Do for now just loosen the screw about a quarter turn and the pin should loosen up. If it doesn't then take the pin out and see if something got into the spring which is behind it. Hope this helps. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this work on a mini lathe for bead makeing i want to make more than just beads |
Answer: | This jaw design is really for metalworking and provides very little grip for wood. For beads you might want to buy a small Nova chuck (they are really good) and purchase one of their smaller jaw sets and a drill in the tailstock... Or do search online for jam chuck or consider mandrels.... |
Question: | smallest round stock it'll accept? Will it grip 1/4" steel mandrels |
Answer: | The jaws are reversible and meet in the center. Definitely will handle 1/4” stock. |
Question: | Will this fit a mini lathe with with a 3/4" head stock |

User questions & answers
Question: | They are made of high speed steel but are they hardened? hss is good but it should be heat treated for maximum performance as a tool |
Answer: | They are not hardened to the degree that you seek. They work okay with softwoods, but not in hardwoods such as oak. |
Question: | Would these be good to make gauges(Plugs) for ears? Just got a mini lathe and want to start trying to make some |
Answer: | yes, they should be excellent for that type of work.Regards, Harry |
Question: | Made in china |
Answer: | Yes, I believe so. Either that or Taiwiian. Either way, these micro woodturning tools were an excellent value for the money spent. Made of High Speed Steel, they kept their sharp edge very well. I am an avid woodturnter, and have bought four sets so far. There are certainly better tools with the next higher level of steel. When one tool snapped, they sent a whole new set. 4.5 out of 5 stars. I recommend. |

This hood along with your D/C, eliminates nearly all of that fine turning dust that flies into your face and collects all over your lathe and stand. The 6" x 9" opening is ideal for spindle and small bowl turning. The hinged clear plastic face shield adjusts for optimal protection and dust collection, while allowing an unobstructed view of the workpiece. The included L bracket allows you to easily clamp the hood or you can use the magnetic plate to support the hood onto most lathes at any point along their cast iron bed. 4" fitting allows you to utilize standard collection hose or use an adapter to step down to your shop vac hose.
- Allows instant mounting and positioning along the length of any MINI or MIDI lathe made of iron
- The hood has a 6-by-9-inch clear opening
- It is ideal for small projects and pen crafting
- Designed with a standard 4-inch male dust collector hose flange
- Protects the turner from flying debris, or can swing viewing screen out of the way
User questions & answers
Question: | what is the length of this thankyou |
Answer: | 9" across the front, 8" tall, and from 4" to 6" deep. 4"at the bottom and 6" at the top. It has a 4" dust port on the back for attaching your dust collector. I hold mine on with a 3" magnet. |
Question: | How heavy is this hood? I have the Rockler plastic hose that can be bent in to different angles, but the dust scoop I have now is too heavy |
Answer: | This hood is quite light. It is seeming to be strong however. I use two different hoses on it; a sears 2 inch or a 4 inch from a dust collector. No problems with either. I use it on a larger lathe with these hoses. This 5-700 lb. beast is equal to the hood. |
Question: | will this item work with a powermatic |
Answer: | Hello F. Smith. I looked up the Powermatic 3520. I don't think it will work because of the distance between the bed and the headstock. Sorry it's not the news you wanted to hear. Happy Turning |
Question: | Has anyone tried this on a Jet 1221VS lathe |
Answer: | I don't have one of those, but I think as long as you can get that bottom metal to the flat part of the lathe it would stick good. It has magnets in it. Or take C clamps to put a straight peace of steal on the back of your lathe for the dust hood to hold to. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How long are the these tools? I'd like to know both lengths the tool itself and the handle length |
Answer: | Tool Length is 16 inches and the Handle Length is approximately 10 inches |
Question: | Are these tools made of M2 steel |
Answer: | If they are actually made of m2 then there not heat treated or still in a the soft state. I've worked with m2 it's some pretty tough material these are not by any means but I still get decent usage out of them before resharpening. I would say there closer to like a drill rod material maybe softer. Wish I could check the Rockwell for you but alas that's not an option currently. Good luck |
Question: | Are these too large to use with an 8X12 mini lathe |
Answer: | You should be able to use for large projects. I have a midi 14x18 and they and good for spindles and such. I have a set of mini tools I use for fine detail on pens and such. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it fits rigid w |
Answer: | They are the standard diameter to fit most wood lathes. Ed |
Question: | Why do you not make this tool rest in a 1" diameter post |
Answer: | I agree that this might be a good idea; however, since PSI has a clientele that primarily focuses on pen turning, a 1" post would be overkill. I actually made a 1" collar about 2" long with a below flush sets crew that I can tighten up on the tool rest. Then the tool rest with the collar attached will fit in and tighten up like it should. I know this didn't actually answer your question, but I do hope it helps! |
Question: | Anyone know if this fits in the HF Item#34706 wood lathe with the 33" bed |
Answer: | I don't know if they will fit, these are 5/8", so I would suggest you measure your current post size. Also, these are definitely not worthless. I abandoned my Jet tool rest and use only these now. I guess it's personal preference, but I like the round bars. They tend not to pit because the pressure is spread across a larger area. |
Question: | How long is the post |
Answer: | The post is just long enough for my Jet 1221VS lathe. These are kind of cheap and you would be better off to spend more money and buy the 2 piece rests. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will these fit the Rikon turning tools |
Answer: | not sure about rikon in particular, but i have tools from multiple manufacturers. the main thing i can see is the different sized relief cuts to support the size of the carbide blade. for instance, a pen turning tool will have a different sized relief cut for than a mid or full sized tool. all of the screw thread pitches are the same in my tools too. with this in mind, unless rikon does something wildly different, and their regular power tools at least don't appear to be, and the tool is supposed to hold that particular sized blade, than it *should* fit ok. best of luck. |
