User questions & answers

Question: I have a chuck that is 1"-8tpi female thread (nova 48111), it doesn't fit on this lathe. what adapter should i buy
Answer: Buy a 3/4" 16 TPI to 1" 8 TPI adapter. If you further questions go to http://www.woodturningz.com/downloads/w1704_ds.pdf for the specs on this machine.
Question: is there an adapter for the face plate for mounting live center chucks? I bought one but won't line up with holes
Answer: I'm not sure if they make the adapter to mount on the face plat. I have a 2" diameter three jaw, self centering scroll type chuck that i bought from Amazon that ihave used that works great, but i think that the holes in the face plate is for mounting a backing block to the piece of wood stock to turn a bowl. It says in the manual that you glue the block to the wood your turning and use the holes to screw the block on to face plate. Hope this helped.
Question: What size wood stock can it hold? How about something like 12'' long by 8" wide piece of wood
Answer: The length it will hold will be dependant upon what chucks you have in the head and tail stock. The bulkier the chucks, the shorter the length it will handle. I'd say it will hold 12" lengths unless your chucks are sizable. I wouldn't try more than 4" width stock unless it was short. Although the lathe may hold the stock, it would be too much for the motor. The intended purpose of this lathe is to make small things like ink pens, Christmas ornaments, small toys like tops or yo-yo's and tool handles etc. If you want to mount 12" X 8" stock you should be looking at full sized lathes.
Question: is there anyway to secure to a bench
Answer: Yes. It has has three holes in the base that you can bolt it down with. I bolted mine down on a metal stand. It holds it down real solid. Mine is the Shop Fox W1704 also. It is well built. I really like mine. Hope this helps!

  • Variable speed: 100–3200 RPM
  • Tailstock, headstock, and tool rest support have lever-action CAM locks for quick positioning
  • Forward/reverse spindle control

User questions & answers

Question: What is the maximum degree the headstock can swing for outboard turning
Answer: The headstock does not swivel (or swing) at all. The headstock can be released and can slide down the bed to the far end. The oversize banks can then hang out past the lathe bed. This lathe can swing a 22 inch blank over the bed. The advantage to this, is you never have to realign the headstock to the tailstock. I have not seen any sort of outboard tool rest from Shop Fox. Other manufactures do make them. I love my W1852.
Question: Does this lathe have an optional bed extension which will fit it
Answer: It has 42 inches between centers. I have this lathe, enjoy it very much. I have not found any type bed extension. The headstock can be easily moved down the bed and the tasilstock removed, to give better access for bowl work. Bill

SHOP FOX W1852 VARIABLE SPEED WOOD LATHE

Wood turners who enjoy making large bowls, vases, furniture pieces, and other large-diameter projects require power, capacity and high-torque to meet their performance needs. You get all three and then some with this burly lathe that weighs in at over a quarter-of-a-ton. With a 3 HP, 3-phase motor that runs off of single-phase power, electronic variable speed control, 22" of swing, and 1-1/4" x 8 TPI RH spindle, this lathe delivers the goods to gratify even the most discerning of turners.

Variable Speed Range

This beast features a variable speed range of 100 – 3200 RPM, perfect for both large and small turning projects and finishing.

Changing Speed Ranges

The pulley belt configurations provide two speed ranges. To maximize the spindle torque, use low spindle speed range for spindle feeds of 1200 RPM or less.

Cam-Action Clamping System

Shop Fox W1852 headstock is equipped with a cam-action clamping system to secure it to the lathe bed. When the lever is tightened, a locking plate lifts up underneath the bed and secures the headstock in place. The headstock can be positioned anywhere along the lathe bed.

Adjusting Tailstock

The tailstock adjusts in the same manner as the headstock. Make sure both the headstock and the tailstock are firmly locked to the lathe bed.

Outboard Turning

Outboard turning is a variation of faceplate turning and is accomplished with the headstock positioned so the faceplate is not directly over the bed, allowing a larger turning capacity than the swing specification of the lathe.

When outboard turning, ALWAYS use a floor-mounted tool rest and keep tool in contact with rest during all turning operations.

User questions & answers

Question: Can you add an extendion table on it to turn long spindel legs
Answer: Yes! You just can't buy it on amazon..rockler and woodcraft sell them for around $150.
Question: Is it a Morse taper
Answer: Yes both the head stock and tail are #2
Question: what is needed with this lathe for pen turning
Answer: Basically, you will need a 7mm MT2 mandrel and your tools. When you order your pen kits, make sure you get the bushings and drill bit. Depending on how you finish the pens, you may need a buffing system. For acrylics, get a set of micro pads, they really bring the shine out. I also use a "french polish" and shellac to put a lasting hard coat on the finished product. Good luck and enjoy the lathe.
Question: what is the thread size on the head stock
Answer: Headstock Spindle Thread is 1" x 8 TPI.Complete data sheet is here:http://content.jettools.com/assets/manuals/719100_man_EN.pdf

User questions & answers

Question: Will 1221 tail stock accept #2 Morse taper drill chuck
Answer: Yes! Just be sure that the tail stock hole and morse taper are clean, otherwise the #2 morse taper can be difficult to remove...
Question: has this lathe have a indexing head
Answer: William, yes this lathe has an indexing head. I have not yet used the feature but it is done with a spring loaded pin which you lock into anyone of 24 positions. The spring loaded pin in screwed in once the pin is set to hold it in place.Rich F
Question: Is this Ron Swanson approved
Answer: Yes, Ron personally blesses each unit as it’s loaded onto a truck.
Question: Do you need to move a belt to change speeds? Or is there a dial or switch
Answer: This lathe has a variable speed controller, so the speeds may be changed using the simple rotating knob. To provide speed ranges to suit any situation, especially for the more experienced turner, there is a three step pulley. This arrangement allows the variable speed controller to adjust speeds from 60 to 900 rpm on the low step of the pulley, 110 -1800 rpm on the 2nd step (medium), and a high speed range of 220 -3600 rpm on the the 3rd step. The belt need only be changed if you want to move to a different range of speeds. This is a very simple process.

  • 2-Inch diameter 3-jaw mini lathe chuck
  • Includes MT#1 and MT#2 arbors and wrenches

User questions & answers

Question: What is the largest size piece you can fit in the chuck
Answer: Pen blanks maybe a little larger. This chuck is smaller than you would think. Not a bad product but it does come a bit loose sometimes while using it
Question: would this fit in a drill chuck
Answer: No. It will not fit in a drill chuck. It uses a taper that will not allow a drill chuck to tighten on it safely.
Question: Is it self centering
Answer: This is a scroll chuck and as suck is a centering chuck. If the Chuck is not centering the jaws are in the wrong slots. They are numbered and you line the numbers up.
Question: I have a 618 atlas metal lathe with a m2 taper in the spindle. will this hold turning steel securely
Answer: If the steel you're turning is round stock or 3 sided and you're connecting it to a live center, I don't think you'll have a problem. However, if it's 4-sided, you will be disappointed.
