14 best live center for wood lathe

A live center for a wood lathe is an essential accessory used in woodworking to support and stabilize a workpiece while it is being turned on the lathe. It is a critical tool for ensuring precision and safety in woodturning projects. Here are some key points about live centers for wood lathes:

  1. Function: A live center is a rotating component that is mounted in the tailstock of a lathe. It serves to provide support to the workpiece, allowing it to rotate smoothly and evenly as it is shaped and turned by the lathe's cutting tools.

  2. Components: A typical live center consists of several parts, including a bearing assembly and a point or cone-shaped tip. The bearing assembly ensures smooth rotation, while the tip is designed to engage with the workpiece. Some live centers have interchangeable tips to accommodate different types of workpieces.

  3. Types: There are different types of live centers available, including:

    • Standard Live Center: These have a pointed tip and are suitable for general woodturning tasks.

    • Cup Center: Instead of a pointed tip, it has a cup-shaped tip. It is used for supporting the end of a workpiece with a center hole.

    • Bull Nose Center: This type has a rounded tip, which is useful for supporting concave workpieces.

    • Multi-Tip Center: These live centers come with interchangeable tips, allowing for versatility in supporting various workpiece shapes.

  4. Materials: Live centers are typically made from high-quality materials such as steel or high-speed steel. These materials ensure durability and resistance to wear and heat generated during the woodturning process.

  5. Installation: To use a live center, it is inserted into the tailstock's Morse taper and tightened in place using a tailstock quill. The workpiece is then positioned between the live center in the tailstock and the lathe's spindle.

  6. Advantages: Live centers help prevent the workpiece from vibrating or wobbling during turning, which can result in a smoother finish and reduce the risk of accidents. They also reduce the stress on the lathe's bearings.

  7. Maintenance: Proper maintenance, such as periodic lubrication of the bearings, is essential to ensure the live center functions smoothly and lasts longer.

In summary, a live center for a wood lathe is a crucial accessory that provides support and stability to workpieces during the woodturning process. It comes in various types and is designed to enhance precision and safety in woodworking projects.

User questions & answers

Question: How do I know what size to buy for an older wood Lathe
Answer: I fits on my shopsmith. Shopsmith has a #2 morse taper.
Question: Will this fit on a shopsmith
Answer: The one I have is also not suitable for turning metal. As Randa stated. It is dead soft metal. The first time I installed it with a piece of stainless steel in the lathe, it deformed like it was made of modeling clay. Now my center has big ring-shaped gouges all over the end messing up the precision pretty bad. Don't get this for metal turning.
Question: Can it be used to turn metal? Is it hardened? What is the shank length, and overall length of this live center
Answer: Almost anything can be replaced. I've had this live center for about 3 years without any problems. I don't grease, oil, or clean it. If this live center fails I will probably throw it in my catch all drawer thinking one day I will come up with a plan to fix it. By the time you add up the hours and get an accurate measurement from already worn bearings and place that order I would rather just buy a new one.
Question: Can the bearings be replaced when the time comes
Answer: This is a 10 deg included angle and I believe it is for de burring. I am going to use it as a guide so I can make dowels. The octagon dowel will be fed into a hardwood block with this reamers size for control to form a perfectly shaped dowel. "See Rob Cosman's doweled boxes on U-Tube"

User questions & answers

Question: will this fit my craftsman
Answer: Possibly but not as a 1-to-1 replacement. The Shopsmith Tailstock is a MT2. The difference between the two is that A #1 will be 2-1⁄8" long, a #2 will be 2-9⁄16" long.
Question: Will this fit in a shop smith mark v
Answer: MT2 and MT1 are designations for the tail of the center. I believe MT1 is a larger bore than MT2. I bought an MT2 and it fits the tailstock of my Grizzly midi-lathe. Check the requirements of your particular lathe before ordering. The manual should say. Good luck!
Question: I know the cone size but what about the other side
Answer: He usado poco el centro giratorio, pero en el corto uso he notado que es un producto de calidad más adelante puedo dar un criterio más amplio. Gracias

User questions & answers

Question: I have a 3/4' live male threaded end but lost the spur, I need to weld a spur to a bolt so need to know the diameter of the taper below the spur
Answer: just as cheap to buy a new one. weld wont hold if you put any strain on it
Question: I would like to know the dementions of the shaft that goes into the chuck I know its tapered but need to know big and small size thanks Jack
Answer: If you have a Morse taper 2 (available in MT1) it has a taper of .04995 per inch. The approximate sizes of the big end and small ends are: 0.572 and 0.700. Those will vary depending on the depth of the socket (it's not a chuck), the length of the shank, and other variables. The only thing hard and fast about it is the taper.
Question: I'm new to turning and would like to know if the "5/8 inch crown" is refering to the outside machined dimension at the bitting teeth end
Answer: It is to the outside of the device, not from center to the points of the teeth. I don't recommend that you buy this, though. The center point is spring loaded and eventually the set screw on the side will come undone and fling off in a random direction. Then, when you take the piece off the lathe, the center point and spring will fly out the end. If you're lucky, you don't have huge piles of sawdust and you're able to find the pieces and put it back together.
Question: My pin is also stuck. It was not from being dirty because I have never used it. Has anyone came up with a way to get the pin back out
Answer: That's easy to fix. On the side, just below the teeth, you will find a screw. That screw allows you to do three things. First, it allows you to take the pin out if you don't want to use it. Second, it allows you to lock the pin so it does not retract. And last, probably what you are interested in, it allows you to free up the pin so it slides up and down. When the pin is out you will notice a notch on one side. Make sure the screw and notch are lined up or the pin just might shoot out at you the next time you loosen it. Do for now just loosen the screw about a quarter turn and the pin should loosen up. If it doesn't then take the pin out and see if something got into the spring which is behind it. Hope this helps.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this stand work with a jet jwl-1015 lathe
Answer: No much I’m afraid. You can check at Technatools and Pen State Industries for a Spindle adapter that goes from the chuck to a 18mm threaded spindle. If you are in the US it may be harder to find. Both technatoole and PSI are sold here on Amazon.
Question: How wide are the support legs on the bottom of the stand perpendicular to the legs
Answer: If it is 1” 8 TPI it will fit. Please double check the specs at Harbor Freight. I’m not sure if the small lathe is 1” 8 TPI.
Question: Can casters be added
Answer: I’m not familiar with the mophorn lathe but the spindle size is the determining factor. This chuck will fit any lathe with a 1” spindle with 8 TPI threads.
Question: Would this stand work for nova comet ii
Answer: The chuck tightens like the Grizzly and Penn state chucks as well as some of the older nova chucks. The back ring turns like a big chuck key and is tightened with torsion bars (orange handled bars seen in picture) inserted into the holes positioned around the chuck body and back ring

User questions & answers

Question: Im making a wood lathe. What might I use to place these into and power them
Answer: The three on the right are drive centers. The one on the left is a live center.
Question: are these live centers or drive centers
Answer: There is no country of origin markings on the parts or the box, so the should be U.S. made. I haven't found any information on the brand "Almhs", so I have a feeling they produce for Amazon only - however that is just speculation on my behalf.
Question: Is this made in china? if so, is there an american brand i can buy on amazon
Answer: Hi, it is 137mm/54inch, thanks
