11 best adjustable wrench with codes
An adjustable wrench, also known as an adjustable spanner or crescent wrench, is a versatile hand tool used for tightening or loosening nuts, bolts, and other fasteners of various sizes.Adjustable wrenches come in different sizes and designs, and they often have codes or markings that provide information about their specifications and features. Here's what you need to know about adjustable wrenches with codes:
Size Codes: Adjustable wrenches are available in various sizes, and these sizes are often indicated by numerical codes. For example, a common size code might be "6" or "8," representing the length of the wrench in inches. The length of the wrench determines the maximum size of the fastener it can accommodate.
Materials: Adjustable wrenches can be made from different materials, including steel and alloy. Higher-quality wrenches may have codes or markings that indicate the type of material used. For instance, you might see "CR-V" for chrome vanadium steel, a durable and corrosion-resistant material commonly used in hand tools.
Jaw Capacity: Adjustable wrenches have a movable jaw that can be adjusted to fit various fastener sizes. The codes on the wrench often indicate the maximum jaw capacity in inches or millimeters. For example, you might see "1-1/2" or "38mm" to signify the wrench's maximum opening size.
Brand and Model: Some adjustable wrenches have brand names, model numbers, or manufacturer codes stamped on them. These codes can help identify the specific product and manufacturer for warranty or replacement purposes.
Scale Markings: Many adjustable wrenches have scale markings etched or printed on the tool. These markings can be used for measuring the size of fasteners or adjusting the wrench to a specific size.
Adjustment Mechanism: Adjustable wrenches typically feature a worm gear or thumbwheel adjustment mechanism that allows the user to change the jaw size. The codes may indicate the type of adjustment mechanism used.
Non-Slip Handle: Some adjustable wrenches have ergonomic handles with non-slip coatings or patterns for improved grip and comfort during use. These features may also be indicated by specific codes or labels.
Finish: The finish of an adjustable wrench can impact its durability and resistance to corrosion. Codes or markings may indicate whether the tool has a chrome-plated or black oxide finish, for example.
Warranty Information: In some cases, adjustable wrenches may have warranty information or codes that specify the terms and conditions of the manufacturer's warranty.
Quality and Standards: High-quality adjustable wrenches may have codes or labels indicating compliance with industry standards, such as ANSI (American National Standards Institute) or DIN (Deutsches Institut für Normung).
When purchasing or using an adjustable wrench, it's essential to refer to the codes and markings on the tool to ensure that it meets your specific needs and requirements. Proper care and maintenance of the wrench will extend its lifespan and performance.

User questions & answers
Question: | what is the thickness of the wrench jaws? Not how wide, but how thick is it lying on its side. I need to open up a faucet but can't be thick |
Answer: | The thickness tapers down towards the tips. Thus, it is 1/4" thick at the tip of the jaws, and 1/2" thick at the thickest point just above the worm gear. |
Question: | Do you find the adjustment requires a consistent amount of force throughout the entire range? Or is it stiffer through part |
Answer: | There is no slop in the gear drive like there can be on other C wrenches because of close tolerances. The adjustment is smooth and consistent. |
Question: | Is the metal soft like some reviewers say - does it easily get dented |
Answer: | Mine is very soft, and dented on the first use. I see others claim to have a different experience. In some cases, like plumbing, they may be using softer copper or brass fittings - a good match. In my case, I used it with steel bolt heads and saw denting. So the different opinions may be due to different usage. But it could also be a batch issue - perhaps early units were soft and later units made from harder material. But that said, I believe this Spanish-made wrench is not made by Channel-lock (privately labeled by someone else), so it has nothing in common with the other Channel-lock tools I own. Perhaps the review dates will show soft jaws on early units, but mine is only 5 months old. It does seem odd that so many people love it, yet several of us find it sub-standard. I like all my other channel-lock tools, so this one is out of the ordinary. |
Question: | What is the country of origin |
Answer: | According to the Manufacturer's description: Made in Spain to the highest quality standards of Channellock, Inc. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does the blue stain over time |
Answer: | The jaws where the FLAT bolt clasping surfaces exist taper uniformly from 0.351" at the tips to 0.570 at their widest part -- that is 1.225 inward from the tips. The taper of the head continues to 0.635 at full throat depth of the wrench. This depth is 1.460" thereby allowing the inner point of a hex nut to enter to that depth. The wrench will grip a 1-5/8 nut fully and will open to 1-11/16" |
Question: | It says origin usa but the box says made in Spain which one is it |
Answer: | The world has too many nuts and not enough wrenches. Some definition of "very thin" and "long enough" will help us to answer your question. Along with this wrench I also bought a slim/thin fixed size wrench to work on a particular nut. |
Question: | How thick are the jaws of each wrench |
Answer: | I don't work on bikes, but keep in mind that the slim version is still 3/16" thick, which is just over 4mm wide, I think. I don't think that is thin enough for your application. Also notice the thin cut doesn't extend all the way to the back of the wrench, so if you want a full engagement of the nut using the whole wrench opening, it probably won't work off the shelf. |
Question: | Whats the guarantee |
Answer: | No, the 6SWCB opens up to 1 3/8". The 8SWCB opens up to 1 5/8". Hope this helps. |

User questions & answers
Question: | what is the difference between this and regular one, I'm going to use it to remove and tighten the shower head. which one should I choose |
Answer: | I have had 2 sets of these for a couple of years and the blue is pretty resilient to staining. I work with tools for a living and these are a great set of wrenches. Very well made. If your working with alot of oils im sure they will stain but otherwise they are pretty solid |
Question: | how long is the actual handle on this |
Answer: | Made in Spain. They are quality items, much better then the competition. |
Question: | Are they SAE or metric |
Answer: | Get the 8 inch wide azz ones. They are thin jaws that open real wide. I got these two also but they turn out to just be regular ones... |
Question: | Anyone used this as a cone wrench for bicycles |
Answer: | I don't know but they're the best adjustable wrenches I've ever owned. Try channel locks page for the guarantee. |

User questions & answers
Question: | It says origin is usa are these in fact made in the usa or not |
Answer: | Not sure exactly what you want measured, but from the moveable jaw to the end of the handle in 5 1/4". The blue rubber grip is 3 5/8"long. |
Question: | How wide do the Jaws open |
Answer: | Both. One side has SAE measurements (up to 1.5 inches) and the other side has it in metric. I don't have it on hand to say how long it goes but its how ever much mili and centi meters can fit in 1 and 1/2 inches. Hope this helps. |
Question: | hi what material is the knurl made of. thank you in advance |
Answer: | Hi. I have used it on a kid's bike to free up two nuts that were locked together on the axel. The thickness of the wrench is 3/16". Basically, ChannelLock took a standard wrench 3/8" thick and milled it down to half the normal thickness (3/16"). I plan or order one more for my other toolbox. Hope that helps. |

User questions & answers
Question: | can you take this wrench apart to clean it |
Answer: | Made in Spain. All of the adjustable wrenches are made in Spain. The adjustable pliers are made in the USA. |
Question: | What is the maximum jaw capacity on this wrench |
Answer: | The 10 inch 810WCB opens to 1 3/8 inches. The shorter 8 inch 8WCB opens wider to 1 5/8 inches (graduations go to 1 1/2 inches). I do not believe the 810WCB is really a wide jaw even though the description calls it a wide wrench. It only opens slightly wider than some other brands. I could not find a wide opening version of the 10 inch wrench. The Channellock wrenches appear to better built than most other brands. They are made in Spain. |
Question: | Country of origin says china, but the descriptions says made in usa. which is it |
Answer: | I believe that it's Crome Moly |
Question: | Is this wrench made in the USA |
Answer: | The regular one will probably be better for the shower head. The wide-azz adjustable wrench is good for hard to reach places- like under a sink, etc. |

User questions & answers
Question: | where is it made |
Answer: | I just tried it because I was curious. There is a small set screw on the end of the worm. You can probably take the screw out to remove the worm, but there is a detent to keep the screw from coming all the way out. So not designed for removal, but you can probably do it with some grinding. |
Question: | How many mm is it |
Answer: | The wrench I received is only 1.18” which is upsetting because I was going off of the sellers answer to this question which was 1.5” |
Question: | How thick or narrow is the jaw |
Answer: | Look carefully an that 8 inch wrench; near the end of the handle it says "Spain". That is made by the Spanish firm "Urega", but branded to sell by Channellock. Urega makes excellent wrenches, very precise, strong, with size calibrations on the jaws. Amongst the best you can find. |
Question: | what is the thickness of the wrench jaws? Not how wide, but how thick is it lying on its side |
Answer: | I bought mine a few years ago. Made in Spain. Very very nice wrench. Bought one for work and another one for home. |
