User questions & answers
Question: | How many ounces is this hammer |
Answer: | the sheath is too small. This one is a perfect fit, no problem putting it on or off: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B08FMX519Q/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 |
Question: | It says leather handle-how do I get shock reduction grip |
Answer: | Shipped sharp from factory |
Question: | does this comes with a sheath? If not, is one available? If so, where to buy |
Answer: | I use mine for splitting kindling. The head is an inch wide and is heavy enough to split small pieces easily |
Question: | Does this come with a sheath |
Answer: | Carbon steels tend to be tougher and easier to sharpen. Even stainless steels rust, it just takes more for them to do so. You will need to properly care for the axe either way so they use a steel that can take the beating far better. Outdoors tools aren't meant to just sit somewhere for a year. A light coat of mineral oil every so often will be fine. Or you can just give it a patina once the coating wears. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How do you get it out of the sheath?? I unsnapped the one snap but still can not get it out |
Answer: | The bits are symmetrical. This tool is not adequate for log splitting or felling. It's slightly larger than an average size hatchet. |
Question: | Does the axe ship having already been sharpened or will I need to sharpen it when it arrives |
Answer: | It does indeed come with a poly-fabric-weave type sheath. There are 4 snap closures as well to ensure a secure fit. |
Question: | Is the head wide enough for splitting or narrow for chopping |
Answer: | It can be thrown, but I don't recommend it. The riveted steel pommel came loose the first time the butt hit the target instead of the blade. The head really needs a bit more weight to be thrown well. When my friends and I tried we noticed it took considerably more force to make it stick than any traditional hatchet or axe due to it being heavier on the handle end (we are all fairly proficient at throwing). All in all though, if you can heave it hard enough to make up for the lack of weight in the head, it will land. |
Question: | Is there a particular reason this is made from carbon steel instead of stainless? Won't this axe rust once the powder coat wears off |
Answer: | hobbits should stick with tiny elven blades. axes are more for dwarfs, as noted by chad. the more important question is what is more deadly to orcs, the black one, the blue one, or the black with the leather handle? |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this solid steel |
Answer: | Technically, this is a maul not a splitting wedge so it’s meant to be used by “free swinging”. In reality, Estwing tools have legendary durability and you could pound away on it like a splitting wedge. That said, a splitting wedge is typically hammered with a sledge hammer. I’ve used sledges and I’ve used the back of a maul to hammer wedges. A splitting maul is essentially a sledge hammer with one end sharpened into an axe blade. Still, I’d probably use another log or a mallet to hammer this tool. I wouldn’t bash on it with a sledge hammer. Remember eye protection! |
Question: | Is the handle solid or a hollow tube like many of these metal hatchets/small axes |
Answer: | I don't believe it's paint; would only be guessing about powdercoat or black oxide; it seems durable and it's a nice tool I can tell you that. The extra weight splits wood with ease and it looks nice. |
Question: | Sportman's hatchet or camper's axe? I'd like it for cutting up kindling and wood for a campfire mostly |
Answer: | Boy, this is really a tricky question. I have and use many axes, all for different tasks.... But my go to for everything is a 2 1/4 lb axe head with a ~3 foot handle. It is a smallish head (Abit more than a hatchet head) on a standard haft. If I was chopping down lots of trees, I would take a larger felling axe. If I were splitting logs, I wouldswing something far heavier. But if I am going on a hike, a paddle, or any adventure, I would grab this pack axe. It is little more than a hatchet head on an axe halft, but it can do almost anything. I have fell trees with it, and I have split kindeling with it. If I could only take one axe, it would be this one. I think I got it at an ace hardware....or some other crap store, and I think this is the 3rd haft I have put on it (2 of them I made myself, and even the stock haft was OK'ish, but I wanted to make my own). I will say, I would not get an Eswing axe for general use. That steel haft will not be good for general work. It is heavy, transmits shock and vibration to your hands, and does not let you choke up on the axe for fine work. Really, take an honest look at how much of what kind of work you are going to do.... or.... Do what I have done. Embrace the beauty of the axe, start a collection, and find ways to use them all :-) |
Question: | Is 2.9 pounds (46.4 ounces) the actual weight? Estwing's site says nothing about weight. I will be backpacking so knowing the weight is important |
Answer: | The handle is blue colored plastic-it’s not painted. If you are holding a painted part of this tool and trying to split wood with it you are doing it wrong. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it have a smooth face? I want to be able to pound metal tent stakes without destroying them, which a milled face would do |
Answer: | yes when I ordered they came in 1 box but there was 2 of them great bargin and nice tools for any outdoorsman |
Question: | does it come with a sheath |
Answer: | Mine have leather handles and came with a nylon “holster” that covers the head/blade. |
Question: | Does it include sheath or some type of edge cover? If not what is the recommended option on sale here for that purpose |
Answer: | Manufactured in Rockford, Illinois for almost a century. I saw it on Cabin Porn under their recommended supplies. You should check it out if you love cabins and outdoors. Also this ax is sharp and well made! |
Question: | Whats the difference between this and the estwing carpenters hachet |
Answer: | The whole tool weighs about 31 ounces. I cannot separate weight of the head vs the handle, if that is the question. |

Question: | Any one tried throwing |
Answer: | Yes. Just as stated in its description. It is also fully compatible with a whole line of attachments made by ridged. |
Question: | Is this axe suitable for hobbits |
Answer: | These are the replacement backing pads that hook and loop sanding paper attaches to. There is no grit and do not sand with this unless you attach sanding paper. |
Question: | Is this a good personal defense Tomahawk |
Answer: | Yes. They are hard plastic with the velcro base. They screw onto the sander as a replacement for the original velcro base. These work very well. |
Question: | Is this item full tang |
Answer: | Its unclear but as your particular part is obsolete. personally I would try this before having to buy a new complete sander |
Question: | What kind of steel do you use for this tomahawk |
Answer: | Philips screws |
Question: | Is this a good weapon to fight aliens |
Answer: | Yes they have adhesive but sometimes I coat the back with additional contact cement to lengthen the life of the sand paper for a job. |

Question: | Tried to use the axe. Blue paint from the handle painted my palm amost instantly . Any idea how to make the pant to stay on the handle |
Answer: | Aside from the snide answers (from right wing trolls) to your question, the best way to protect the blue paint is to spray the painted areas with polyurethane. The paint Estwing uses is not a durable paint at all and is only for cosmetic purposes. |

Fireside Friend Splitting Tool
Estwing's Fireside Friend Splitting Tool is forged in one piece. The length and weight give leverage and power for easy wood splitting. If you need firewood for staying warm during the winter season ahead, you're going to need a good wood splitting tool. Splitting tools are designed to create smaller chunks by splitting wood fibers apart.
Easy To Use
The original maul resembles an axe but with a broader head, for splitting wood. It also causes nearly no part of the wood to go to waste. More wood means less splitting and enjoying that wood in your fireplace for a longer time.
Built For Power
The best splitting maul will have a large, heavy wedge-shaped head. Swinging the large heavy head will produce a great force focused into the blunt V-shaped head. The dull blade is still thin enough to find its way in between the wood fibers and with the thick head of the maul.
Comes With Comfort
The handle length and weight give leverage and power for easy wood splitting. The grip is a beautiful genuine leather. Maul handles are normally straight and closer to round with a elongated oval axe handle, built for maximum control and comfort.
Durability
Estwing sheaths are built with durable ballistic nylon construction with reinforced stitching, offers safety and protection for your Estwing tool. Its button fastening and belt compatible design makes for easy carry around item.
