6 best wood deck preservative

Wood deck preservative refers to products used to protect and maintain wooden decks, typically made from materials like pressure-treated lumber, cedar, redwood, or other wood types. These products are related to the categories of Stains, Finishes, Sealers, Paint, Wall Treatments, Supplies, and Tools within the realm of Home Improvement. Here are some key points about wood deck preservatives:

  1. Purpose: Wood deck preservatives are used to prolong the lifespan of a wooden deck by shielding it from the effects of moisture, UV rays, weather, and general wear and tear.

  2. Types:

    • Stains: Wood stains enhance the color and appearance of the wood while providing some level of protection. They come in various opacities, including clear, semi-transparent, and solid. Transparent stains allow the natural grain of the wood to show through, while solid stains offer more extensive coverage.
    • Finishes and Sealers: These products create a protective barrier on the wood's surface. Clear sealers provide minimal color change, while finishes like varnish or polyurethane add a glossy, protective coat.
    • Paint: Some people choose to paint their decks for both aesthetics and protection. Deck paint is designed to withstand heavy foot traffic and the elements.
  3. Protection: Wood deck preservatives protect against moisture infiltration, which can lead to rot and decay. They also shield the wood from harmful UV rays, preventing fading and damage to the surface.

  4. Maintenance: Properly maintaining a wood deck involves periodic cleaning and reapplication of preservatives to ensure long-lasting protection. The frequency of maintenance depends on factors like climate, deck usage, and the type of preservative used.

  5. Application: These products can be applied using brushes, rollers, or sprayers, depending on the type of preservative being used. It's crucial to follow the manufacturer's instructions for application and drying times.

  6. Environmental Considerations: Some wood deck preservatives may contain chemicals that can be harmful to the environment. Eco-friendly or water-based preservatives are available for those looking for more sustainable options.

  7. Preparation: Properly preparing the deck surface, including cleaning and sanding, is essential before applying any wood deck preservative. This ensures better adhesion and a more even finish.

  8. Color and Aesthetics: Many homeowners choose wood deck preservatives based on their desired aesthetics. Transparent or semi-transparent stains allow the natural beauty of the wood to shine through, while solid stains and paints offer a wider range of color choices.

  9. Longevity: The lifespan of wood deck preservatives can vary widely depending on the product and environmental conditions. Transparent stains may need more frequent reapplication than solid stains or paints.

  10. Safety: When working with wood deck preservatives, it's essential to use proper safety precautions, including wearing protective clothing, gloves, and ensuring adequate ventilation when applying products with strong fumes.

Overall, wood deck preservatives are essential for maintaining and protecting wooden decks, ensuring they remain functional and attractive for years to come. The choice of preservative should be based on the specific needs of your deck and your aesthetic preferences.

User questions & answers

Question: If we over-order, can we return un-opended containers
Answer: Packaged powder product. I guess so. 2 pkgs. should do apx 2500 - 3000 sq ft. Sprayed
Question: Can you use a tank sprayer to apply the stain
Answer: Yes, you can. We strained it with a fine mesh first before putting it in the tank and had to take the tip apart for cleaning occasionally. Would do it the same way again.
Question: Can i strip an old deck down and then apply lifetime? or does it really have to be bare/raw untreated wood? you know if i strip it really good
Answer: what this product does is to change the ph of the wood cells, so that nothing can live on them, not bacteria, fungus or mold...my guess is that if the wood absorbs the product dissolved in water that it will do its job
Question: If I were to apply stain over this product to change it to a specific color will this allow proper adherence to the wood or will it not take properly
Answer: I've never put stain over the treated wood. I have however added water soluble latex paint to give the treatment some color/tint. Specifically, I used a very small amount of barn red during the mixing stage. Since the Valhalla product it meant to naturally grey the wood the addition of the red barn latex added just enough red tint to make my wood resemble aged barn wood which was what I desired. Adding to much latex as a pigment or staining over the Valhalla treatment I believe will hinder the treatments preservative effectiveness and it's greying result. Hope that is helpful.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the warranty on this
Answer: I don't believe there is any warranty. We applied it two years ago and the covered areas still look good. The section in direct Sun...needs to have it applied again.
Question: How long can the product be stored once the container is opened
Answer: We actually used some that we had stored in our garage that was left over from the last time we stained our siding and that was in the summer of 2012, 6 yrs ago. When we removed the lid, it looked like it had become a gel but my husband used a drill with a paint mixer/stirrer tool and it became liquefied again. We applied it to the siding without incident and the color matched the new 5 gallon containers we bought this summer .
Question: I have 275 ft of fence plus a gate- what's the coverage with using a sprayer
Answer: I’m in the process of staining my fence (I am using a different brand) with a semi-transparent stain. I have 187’ of fence at 5’ high including 2 gates. Applied with a roller and brush, I’m going to need around 13 gallons. My recommendation is rent a sprayer from Home Depot. You’ll save time and money as you’ll use less product and it will go much much faster.
Question: we have a heavy dining set and i am worried about scratches after i stain, how does it hold up to heavy chairs moving back and forth
Answer: I have a deck/patio furniture set, including a cast iron umbrella base. Lots of use over the last year with no evidence of scratches in the deck. The stain penetrates the wood rather than building a barrier so dragging stuff across the boards won't take it off provided the wood is properly prepared.

User questions & answers

Question: Could this be used on an exterior door to help with swelling from humidity? If so how to apply
Answer: I doubt it would help much. It stops water penetration but not humidity problems.
Question: Can the protector be applied on damp wood
Answer: I think not.
Question: Will this work on outdoor mahogany floor
Answer: Yes will protect it
Question: Hello, Do you have to re-apply every year
Answer: Probably. To tell, splash some water on the finish. If the water forms bubbles, the surface is OK for another season. However, after a year the surface may look dirty, and so you may want to clean it and re-seal it. Again, after you clean the surface, splash some water on it and see whether the previous seal still holds.

User questions & answers

Question: I already put linseed oil on my pine joists (in my shower) over a year ago now. Could I now put this product on for a better waterproof seal
Answer: I don't see why not. It has been a year. If it was only a few months, I would not use it.
Question: Can this be used on outdoor cedar furniture to seal and maintain the woods natural color
Answer: I have not tried cedar specifically but so far the all the other types of wood have kept their original color. There was a little bit of a whitish film right after application but that went away after it soaked in.
Question: If i use this on a trellis made of new pine 2x4s, how long can i reasonably expect it to last? when will i want to to reapply? no ground contact
Answer: If you apply the product generously and then come back before it dries and do another light application you should get a minimum of 3 years and most likely 5 years.
Question: I have made a wooden sink cover for my kitchen. Would this product keep the wood from warping/taking on water damage
Answer: We used this product in the back of a box truck. The floor has been wet many times over the last year and the wood has held up great. We have no warping or damage. Good luck.
