13 best stain for wood decks

Wood deck stains are essential products used to protect and enhance the appearance of wooden decks. They are typically categorized under the "Stains, Finishes, and Sealers" section in home improvement stores. Here's what you need to know about stains for wood decks:

  1. Protection and Enhancement: Deck stains are designed to provide both protection and aesthetic improvement for wooden decks. They help shield the wood from the damaging effects of moisture, UV rays, and everyday wear and tear. At the same time, stains can enhance the natural beauty of the wood by adding color and depth.

  2. Types of Deck Stains:

    • Transparent Stains: These stains are quite thin and allow the natural grain and texture of the wood to show through. They provide a subtle color enhancement and are ideal for new or well-maintained wood.
    • Semi-Transparent Stains: These stains offer a bit more color while still allowing the wood's texture to shine through. They are suitable for moderately weathered decks.
    • Semi-Solid Stains: These stains provide even more color coverage and are good for older decks with visible wear and tear.
    • Solid Stains: Solid stains offer the most coverage and are often used for decks with significant wear or those made of less attractive wood. They can completely change the color of the wood.
  3. Application: Deck stains can be applied using various methods, including brushes, rollers, or sprayers. Proper surface preparation, such as cleaning and sanding, is essential to ensure the stain adheres effectively to the wood.

  4. Maintenance: Over time, deck stains will wear away due to exposure to the elements and foot traffic. It's important to reapply the stain as needed, typically every few years, to maintain the deck's appearance and protection.

  5. Water-Based vs. Oil-Based Stains: Deck stains come in both water-based and oil-based formulations. Water-based stains tend to dry faster and have less odor but may require more frequent reapplication. Oil-based stains offer greater durability but have a longer drying time and a stronger odor during application.

  6. Color Options: Stains for wood decks are available in a wide range of colors, allowing homeowners to choose a shade that complements their outdoor aesthetics.

  7. Sealing and Waterproofing: Some deck stains include sealing and waterproofing properties, providing an extra layer of protection against moisture infiltration.

Choosing the right deck stain depends on factors such as the condition of your deck, the desired level of color enhancement, and your maintenance preferences. It's essential to read the manufacturer's instructions and carefully follow the recommended application and maintenance procedures to ensure your wooden deck remains beautiful and well-protected.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the warranty on this
Answer: I don't believe there is any warranty. We applied it two years ago and the covered areas still look good. The section in direct Sun...needs to have it applied again.
Question: How long can the product be stored once the container is opened
Answer: We actually used some that we had stored in our garage that was left over from the last time we stained our siding and that was in the summer of 2012, 6 yrs ago. When we removed the lid, it looked like it had become a gel but my husband used a drill with a paint mixer/stirrer tool and it became liquefied again. We applied it to the siding without incident and the color matched the new 5 gallon containers we bought this summer .
Question: I have 275 ft of fence plus a gate- what's the coverage with using a sprayer
Answer: I’m in the process of staining my fence (I am using a different brand) with a semi-transparent stain. I have 187’ of fence at 5’ high including 2 gates. Applied with a roller and brush, I’m going to need around 13 gallons. My recommendation is rent a sprayer from Home Depot. You’ll save time and money as you’ll use less product and it will go much much faster.
Question: we have a heavy dining set and i am worried about scratches after i stain, how does it hold up to heavy chairs moving back and forth
Answer: I have a deck/patio furniture set, including a cast iron umbrella base. Lots of use over the last year with no evidence of scratches in the deck. The stain penetrates the wood rather than building a barrier so dragging stuff across the boards won't take it off provided the wood is properly prepared.

Product features

Stain + Sealant in One

Stain + Sealant in One protects and beautifies in one step.

Weather-Ready Application

Enhanced waterproofing protection

Helps make sure your wood is protected from cracking due to water.

Advanced SunBlock UV

How much stain do you need to buy?

One gallon of wood stain covers approximately 250-350 square feed, which is enough for a small to medium deck. It should also cover both sides of a 25 foot long fence or a couple pieces of furniture.

Two Gallons

Two gallons of wood stain cover approximately 600 square feed, which should be more than enough for the standard deck project or a 50 foot long fence.

Three or more Gallons

Three or more gallons of wood stain will most likely only be needed on large projects, as they should cover over 850 square feed.

Note: Solid Color Stain requires two coats. You should effectively double your gallons purchased when using a solid.

How To Stain Your Wood Deck In 3 Easy Steps

Sweep debris from deck and then use a product such as Olympic Premium Deck Cleaner to penetrate the wood and lift dirt to the surface to be cleaned, as well as clean stains caused by mildew, dirt, algae and mold. Allow surface to dry.

STEP 2

Tape off any surfaces you don’t want stained. Also, avoid staining in direct sunlight or on hot surfaces because the stain will dry too fast to penetrate properly.

STEP 3

For clear, toner and semi-transparent stains, apply a thin coat with a high-quality brush, roller, paint pad, or spray. For solid stains, apply two thin coats with a brush, roller, or paint pad. To avoid lap marks, apply to a few boards at a time, keeping a wet edge.

For best results, backbrush into the surface to work finish into the wood and ensure the coating is even. Make sure to treat all areas of the wood, including joints, edges and ends.

You’re going to want to follow the directions on your stain container to determine if anything needs done after your final application.

User questions & answers

Question: Could this be used on an exterior door to help with swelling from humidity? If so how to apply
Answer: I doubt it would help much. It stops water penetration but not humidity problems.
Question: Can the protector be applied on damp wood
Answer: I think not.
Question: Will this work on outdoor mahogany floor
Answer: Yes will protect it
Question: Hello, Do you have to re-apply every year
Answer: Probably. To tell, splash some water on the finish. If the water forms bubbles, the surface is OK for another season. However, after a year the surface may look dirty, and so you may want to clean it and re-seal it. Again, after you clean the surface, splash some water on it and see whether the previous seal still holds.

User questions & answers

Question: will this work in paint gun
Answer: yes it will, that's how I applied it.
Question: Will be applying to white cedar fence. How dry does the wood have to be
Answer: I did not heed the "one year" to dry on the new portion of my deck. Did old and new at the same time when the new portion was perhaps 2 months old. There was a definite difference. I washed and brightened both. Also did two coats. The 2nd coat was done while the first coat was still wet as per instructions. Also brushed vs. rolled. The stain seeped into the older wood much better and the color is richer. Don't believe the stain will last for years. In covered areas yes, it does. But my deck area that gets full S.Carolina sun, does not last the year. I re-stained last year and will be doing a layer of water proofing on horizontal surfaces this year in hopes that I won't have to stain again for a while. I am still happy that I bought the water based just because of the clean up and the ease of re-staining even if I feel I had to do it much quicker than if I had used oil based.
Question: Can I use this on my new cream colored bamboo blinds? Unsure about the method they were colored, but almost no sheen. Want stain protection in kitchen
Answer: Hard to say without looking at the wood , but if the wood still looks porous enough we're the Stain can soak in some I would think a light coat possibly 2 would do it. It's very thin milky color but dries clear
Question: I am applying this to a fence. Would you recommend it for fences? Also, if you have used this product how well is it holding up
Answer: Using it for 10 years, great on fences. Apply W weed oil sprayer. Brush W 4" throw away brush as needed. Time between coats varies W the look you want. 2-3 years looks great. At 5 years fading is noticeable. Apply when cool. Dampen surfaces to get soak in.
Question: Can I use this on kitchen cabinets made with walnut veneer? My goal is to keep the natural raw, light look but also see the grain, not milky
Answer: No, don’t use on kitchen cabinets. Instead use water base polyurethane. Easy clean up and is just as good as oil base polyurethane.
Question: Can this be used to seal laminate flooring
Answer: It is not for interior use. Also you cannot stain , paint or varnish over Seal-Once products. Seal-Once must be applied to raw wood.
Question: Can this be used over an oil base stain
Answer: No.
Question: What’s the best product for Douglas fir pergola
Answer: No, this Seal Once product is not made for pergola floors, it has a dull finish. Not shiny. I would think you would want a poly eyrthane, which is durable and has a shine, recommend a semi-gloss. I would suggest you go to Sherwin Williams and consult their opinion.

The Science of SEAL-ONCE and Innovative Use of Nanotechnology in Wood Finishes & Stains

Unlike many top-coat sealers sold today that trap moisture below the surface, MARINE creates a flexible, breathable barrier which allows water vapor to escape. This key feature helps prevent damage to wood caused by water intrusion, such as: wood rot, decay, mold & mildew growth, cracking & splitting. Typical wood sealers form a barrier on the surface of the wood, trapping moisture below the surface. As the water evaporates, it causes the surface coating and the substrate to crack & peel, leaving a broken surface that requires continued maintenance and is susceptible to additional damage. SEAL-ONCE uses cutting-edge, nano-particle technology to allow wood to breath and help prevent water vapor damage by protecting wood from the inside out.

Water-based Product that Will Not Harm People, Pets, Plants, Livestock or Marine Life.

SEAL-ONCE products are ultra-low VOC, low odor, non-toxic, non-flammable and non-ozone depleting. They are safer for the environment, easier to apply than solvent based wood finishes and clean up with soap & water. They do not contain nitrates, phosphorous compounds or heavy metals like many Oil-based sealers & stains on the market today.

Quick & Easy Application

Apply first coat with a synthetic brush; pump-up garden sprayer; air-assisted; and/or airless sprayer. Use 15-17 tip and medium to coarse spray pattern. When spraying, always back brush for best results. Second coat can be applied once first coat has penetrated, but is still damp. Second coat must be applied within one hour of applying first coat. For best results, apply in the shade and out of direct sunlight. Clean-up brushes or sprayer with warm soapy water.

Choose from 11 Wood Stain Tints

MARINE can be tinted for use as wood stain in any of the 11 color tints available: Clear, Light Brown, Natural, Brown, Mahogany, Redwood, Bronze Cedar, Cedar, Black, Battleship Gray, Shale Gray & Cape Cod Gray. The tints are sold separately and when mixed with Clear, the tinted formula provides additional UV protection from harmful sun rays.

Surface Preparation & Coverage

Approximate coverage: 250-350 sq. ft./gallon per coat. Actual coverage will vary due to the porosity of the surface. All surfaces should be cleaned with SEAL-ONCE All Wood Cleaner before sealing for best penetration and performance. Remove all old coatings, dust, debris and loose material. Remove oil, grease, algae, grime, mill glaze and mold and mildew stains with appropriate cleaners.

User questions & answers

Question: How much does 1 gallon cover
Answer: About 1/4 of an 8x12 shed. I used 4 gallons for the whole shed
Question: Will this work with a paint gun
Answer: Yes, this product works well with an airless sprayer
Question: Is there any texture to this solid stain? Does it last without peeling for a couple years
Answer: There is no texture, just a smooth paint that took the texture of what we painted it on. No idea on the peel, only just used in the last couple weeks.
Question: How much do I need for a 24’ x 18’ deck
Answer: This is a water based product and as such gets a better coverage area. The product should yield approximately 600 SF. However, when staining a deck, you'll not meet that coverage area if you use an airless paint sprayer. Typically the average would be 450 - 475 SF. If you roll it, you should expect to get between 500 - 525 SF.

Answer: The video quality is good
Question: Could this be used to stain plywood subflooring indoors
Answer: 7-8 minutes after full charged per battery.
Question: Can I use this over pre dyed wood (alcohol stain
Answer: Just bought this drone. Absolutely NOT 8 min fly time. After calibration, gps sync, and using the camera to take pics, let alone video.. best fly time was 3.5 minutes.. was same on both batteries. Maybe if you take off and just let it hover with no maneuvers it may be longer. Going to buy another set and see if these were just old batteries. Good luck

User questions & answers

Question: The listing says semi-transparent, but the picture says transparent, which version is this
Answer: Semi
Question: Is this a gallon container of the product
Answer: Yes this is a one gallon of Thompson water seal
Question: what clear seal do you recommend to use on 12year old pressure treated planks
Answer: I've used Thompson's water-based semi-transparent stain/sealer 3 times now for my 15 year-old pressure-treated deck and it has always done a great job of covering and protecting the wood. It doesn't really last the 4 years they claim, but still very good. They also make an oil-based clear sealer and I use that on my cedar pergola, also very good stuff but it's hard to work with because it doesn't cleanup with water. As an alternative to the oil-base they have an all-purpose water-based clear sealer for wood and masonry. I would use that on my pergola if it was made of pressure treated wood, but with cedar I really want a penetrating oil. So for your pressure treated deck, I would recommend the water-based clear sealer. Given how well the semi-transparent stain has worked for me, I would expect good results with the clear as well. You will certainly want to clean the wood first if you expect to brighten the gray appearance of aged wood. I spray oxygen bleach on the wood first and then scrub with a stiff brush and rinse before sealing.
Question: Would this product work well on untreated Adirondack furniture
Answer: Yes, I think it would be suitable. I have only used it on my deck however. Good protection in a wet climate. Rub it down well after it dries to keep the color from getting on clothes though if you're using a color stain.

The Thompson's Company has earned a well-deserved reputation as identifying industry trends and emerging technologies.

In the early 1920’s, polymer chemist Edward Addis Thompson developed a formula that protected buildings from exterior water damage. His discovery became known as Thompson's WaterSeal Clear Multi-Surface Waterproofer and initially was used by architectural and construction firms for concrete applications.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this peel, flake off after 2 - 3 years
Answer: I don’t know, I just completed my application to my decking and wood fence about 6 months ago and so far they both look great. I don’t think this product will flake or peel off because is a stain but I think is best if you contact the manufacturer and see what they will advise you. So far under the Phoenix Sun I can see a little fading but I will reapply again in about a year or so. Thanks for the question, Jorge
Question: Can anyone share what their decks looked like one year later using this product
Answer: I‘ve used this stain for many years on my decks. I’ve restained the horizontal surfaces every other year, the vertical surfaces every 5 years. I just completely stripped old twp stain off of my deck this spring and stained it in May with one coat of Ready Seal. I thought I probably needed two coats since it was the first staining of a clean deck, but waited to see. It faded quite a bit (not surprised) and I added a second coat earlier today. Based on past experience, I expect this to hold its color well for a couple of years, then I’ll hose it off (not powerwash) and add another coat on the horizontal surfaces in 2 years, and I’ll do the same on the vertical surfaces in about 5 years.
Question: can this be used on wooden playsets/swingsets? Is it non-toxic
Answer: It's used on decks quite a bit and I'm not aware of anybody ever having an issue. It's on my deck and more than one child has crawled around on that without growing a third eye.
Question: Can someone who purchased the light oak or golden pine color upload a photo to see how it turned out, please? also, the longevity on a fence? thanks
Answer: Check out pics on the Ready Seal website. Color varies based on wood type. I’m not sure about longevity on a fence, I’ve only used it in decks. With decks I’ve found that after getting the original staining established (two coats for decks in my experience), it lasts for about two years, then I hose it off (not powerwash) and add another coat to the horizontal surfaces. I do the same on the vertical surfaces about once every 5 years.

User questions & answers

Question: Can this be applied to a deck that the wood is pine treated wood
Answer: Some say wait a year to stain and some say do it right away. I called Cabot with a question at 1-800-877-8246 and they answered pretty fast. I used this on an old deck and it came out very dark but I was ok with that. Couldnt find 7 gallons all at one place. Had to brush it all in to look good. $40 for a gallon is a good price. Accidentally bough $40 for a quart. Make sure you read description. This is a special oil/water mix. It rinses with water.
Question: Is this easily removed from metal balusters? Does the natural make the wood much darker
Answer: Yep, just have rag with you and wipe it off. This is a great stain, highly recommend it. So, I purchased the Natural Cedar, the stain looks milky in the can, but applies and as it drys, gives a rich Cedar color.
Question: How many square feet (approximately) will a 1-gal can cover
Answer: If you sand/prep before and wash planks - 1 gal will get you at least 350 sq feet.
Question: What is the difference between the Heartwood 19204 and the Heartwood 3004? Thanks
Answer: You can call Cabot at 1-800-US-STAIN (877-8246) and they answer pretty quickly. The 19204 is probably the new miscible oil/water mix. And the 3004 would be the classic oil mix. You cannot mix the two or use one on top of the other but you can clean the 19204 brushes after with water. They claim the new mix is more durable.
