8 best penetrating oil stains

Penetrating oil stains are a type of wood stain used in the field of finishing and woodworking. They are designed to enhance the natural beauty of wood while providing protection and durability. Here's what you need to know about penetrating oil stains:

  1. Wood Enhancement: Penetrating oil stains are transparent or semi-transparent, allowing the natural grain and texture of the wood to show through. They enhance the wood's appearance by enriching its color and highlighting its features.

  2. Deep Penetration: As the name suggests, these stains penetrate deep into the wood fibers. This deep penetration helps protect the wood from within, making it more resistant to moisture, UV rays, and other environmental factors.

  3. Variety of Finishes: Penetrating oil stains come in various finishes, including matte, satin, and gloss. You can choose the finish that best suits your aesthetic preferences and project requirements.

  4. Application: These stains are typically applied by brushing, wiping, or spraying onto the wood surface. It's important to follow the manufacturer's instructions for application, including surface preparation and drying times.

  5. Drying Time: Penetrating oil stains generally have a relatively quick drying time compared to some other wood finishes. This can be advantageous for projects with tight timelines.

  6. Compatibility: Penetrating oil stains are compatible with a wide range of wood types, including hardwoods and softwoods. They can be used on interior and exterior wood surfaces, such as furniture, decks, fences, and cabinetry.

  7. UV Protection: Many penetrating oil stains contain UV inhibitors that help protect the wood from the harmful effects of sunlight. This prevents the wood from fading and deteriorating over time.

  8. Maintenance: While these stains offer good protection, they may require periodic maintenance, such as reapplication or touch-ups, to keep the wood looking its best. The frequency of maintenance depends on factors like weather exposure and wear and tear.

  9. Environmentally Friendly Options: Some penetrating oil stains are formulated to be environmentally friendly, with low VOC (volatile organic compound) content. This makes them safer to use indoors and reduces their impact on the environment.

  10. Precautions: When working with penetrating oil stains, it's essential to use proper ventilation and protective equipment, such as gloves and eye protection. Dispose of used materials according to local regulations.

  11. Compatibility with Other Finishes: If you plan to use additional finishes, such as clear topcoats or sealers, make sure they are compatible with the penetrating oil stain you've chosen. Some stains are designed to work well with specific topcoats.

In summary, penetrating oil stains are a popular choice for enhancing and protecting wood surfaces. They offer versatility in terms of finishes, compatibility with various wood types, and UV protection. When used correctly, they can provide a durable and attractive finish for both interior and exterior woodworking projects.

User questions & answers

Question: How much product do you typically use for let's say a large outdoor dining table? I'm oiling my outdoor furniture for the first time. Thanks
Answer: I am in the process of redoing a 5 piece dinning set. It's 4 chairs and a table. I ran out of both the oil and the cleaner/brightener. If yours is as large as mine I recommend using the 32oz or even larger. Could even get the gallon size for the oil if you need more than one coat like my set does.
Question: Is this safe to use on an outdoor patio set made from Acacia wood, or does it have chemicals that will destroy the quality of the wood
Answer: Star brite Teak Oil is ideal for acacia wood.
Question: What's the differnce between this brand and the wadco brand for half the price
Answer: I used both Watco and Star Brite on a set of 4 hairs teak chairs that were very weathered. I cleaned them all with the Star Brite clieaner first, which did a great job. My goal with the teak oil was to replace the natural oil that had leached out over the years. Without that oil, the wood absorbed rain water and was starting to split from the wet dry cycles. The Star Brit is thinner and really soaked in. 1 quart gave me 2 coats on one chair and a start on a second chair. My wife then got the Watco, so I used it on the rest of the chairs. Its much thicker and doesn't soak in nearly as much. One quart id 3 chairs. It colors the wood a lot more, which I didn't want. I wish I had used only Star Brite. It does a better job of penetrating deeply into the wood and truly reconditioning it. The Watco is more of a surface finish, giving quick, superficially pretty results. I don't think its nearly as good for rejuvenating severely weathered, dried wood. May it'g work best for preserving newer teak, but I wouldn't recommend it on old teak.
Question: One of the comments mentioned the color "brown" Is this mostly clear or does the darken the wood too much? I will uses this on raw wood
Answer: The oil has a brown color and since I put it on dark brown wood bench, I couldn't tell if coloring was a factor. I don't think it would change raw wood that much, unless it was a really light wood. Oil does soak in and that might make a slight difference.

Answer: Easy to clean...I’ve had for over 10 years in one garage and 2 years in another...looks great
Question: Interested in using on mahogany. Would like to stain the wood a dark chocolate color. Will this allow me to achieve a dark tone
Answer: This rubber is very durable and should be fine. I used it in a workout room and glued it down. Smelled like tires for about 3 months ;)
Question: Can penofin oil be used on cedar
Answer: This mat is thin but strong. I would say between 1/32 and 1/16 inch thick. That's an American measurement.
Question: Does this have any coloring in it? Want to use on tigerwood so needing clear/transparent application. Thx
Answer: Yea man, it does get really slick, especially when it is wet, cold and windy. I got this for a similar application, have sense ditched it and used large sheets of stuff that is like skate board grip tape. 3M makes it and it has a rubber backing and has a ton of grip, even in icy conditions
Question: Which oil is best for batu? the red label is best from penofin for hardwood? and how often to apply? is oil better than stain for batu
Answer: Foam squares? Not on my RV entryway. They would come apart and catch junk in the crevices.
Question: What is the difference between the red label and this one? I’m using it on new barrel chairs that will be outside by our fire pit
Answer: This style of rubber mat has been around for a very long time. Always thought it was tough material. Though this seems to be rather thin it might work, thinking about weight and hooves of the horse on this.
Question: Would this product work on a stained mahogany deck
Answer: Throw it down and use liquid rubber around the edges, I’ve been there man it’ll work in a pinch for a little while. I patched a leaking roof on a trailer I owned back in the day in a simular fashion. It held back water for a little over a year.
Question: Can you ship this to san francisco, ca
Answer: No it is not rubber backed.

Product features

Small changes in product size & weight lead to lower carbon emissions.

We created Compact by Design to identify products that, while they may not always look very different, have a more efficient design. With the removal of excess air and water, products require less packaging and become more efficient to ship. At scale, these small differences in product size and weight lead to significant carbon emission reductions.

Fast and Easy

No hard scrubbing. No dangerous pressure washers, no acids or bleach. Concrete is like a hard sponge. Oil stains penetrate deep, making removal often impossible. Pull is out breaks down the oil, penetrates deep and draws the oil stain out of the concrete. (test first) Cleaning oil stains from a porous surface can be very difficult. Every day 'cleaners' tend to drive the stain deeper into the surface, leaving shadowing stains that can be permanent.

Improve Your Home's Value

Studies show that nothing detracts more from your home’s value than dirty oil stains on your driveway. No matter how nice the rest of the home looks, the human eye will be drawn to the oil strain on the driveway. Eliminating the ugly oil stains allows people to appreciate the full value of your home and investment.

Improved Safety

Oil stains on concrete, pavers, natural stone, garages etc are extremely slippery, especially when wet (rain or snow). Hundreds of thousands of people slip and fall on oil surfaces every year. This is especially dangerous for older and less agile people.

Healthier Home

foot traffic from people and pets will unavoidably track oil residues from oil stained driveways into the home and car. These oily residues permanently damage carpet and create unnecessary stains in your home. Avoid these stains and extra related cleaning work by eliminating the problem at the source.

Test First

1) Numerous factors can affect how concrete accepts and releases a stain or if the stain is permanent. Type of pour, where densifiers or additives in the mix, porosity, etc can all play a role. Pull it out works by emulsifying the stain and drawing it into ‘solution’ a test spot verifies if the stain is being emulsified or if pre-treatment is needed.

Pour On

Apply pull it out concrete oil stain remover to the entire stained area. Exceed the stained area by approximately one half inch.

Let Dry

1) Depending on temperature and humidity , pull it out concrete oil stain remover will completely dry in a couple hours or up to a full day. Once dry , it will appear chalky white. If there are still translucent areas, the product needs more drying time.

Brush Away

1) After completely drying, the treated area can be brushed away with a stiff brush. A wire brush is most times the best option. Vigorously brush the dried, treated area. Sweep up the remaining cleaned area. Any white residue will fade over time.

Question: Can this be used on outdoor teak furniture
Answer: Yes, it can be used on your hair, I use it daily and my hair has a shine and it looks healthier.
Question: is this suitable for exterior wood
Answer: I too am a novice. But I have a rose water oil and a muscle relaxant oil that both say to mix with the almond oil before using. I think it is because the first two are so concentrated they need to be toned down a little. The almond is supposed to have minimal odor so as not to affect what it is being mixed with. The almond oil is referred to as a base oil.
Question: How much area does 1 qt cover
Answer: I do
Question: Are these stains good for exterior use
Answer: Through long-term use, wrinkles will disappear little by little.

User questions & answers

Question: Mildew resistance and UV protection in semi transparent stain
Answer: yes
Question: Can this be applied to a damp deck
Answer: I have not tried applying the Timber Oil Deep Penetrating Stain to wood dampened by water however oil and water do not mix very well. Next, because the Timber Oil is designed to penetrate the wood, dry wood, I believe damp wood will hinder the process and that will result in a less than satisfactory result and defeat the purpose of applying the Timber Oil. Indeed, you may find that the Timber Oil does not penetrate the damp wood at all. I think you should wait to apply the Timber Oil Deep Penetrating Stain until the wood has dried out. Maybe a month or so after the last rain and you have had some warm weather to dry out the wood, because it will penetrate the dry wood better.
Question: can i use this product on an older deck that been stained before
Answer: Oil stain can be used on any wood that is dried out and "thirsty". It is not a paint that will cover up a different color paint or stain but enhances the natural wood look while protecting.I would venture to say that most decks it is used on are older decks that have been stained before. It is a great product for what it does. If you want something to cover up old paint or hide previous stains-That isn't what it is designed for. If most of your old stain is faded off to where you dont hardly see it-This is perfect.
Question: How does it hold up to rain and the SW sun
Answer: Holds up the best of any stain I tried. It is also very resistant to mold. I am in the NE

Product features

The Science of SEAL-ONCE and Innovative Use of Nanotechnology in Wood Finishes & Stains

Unlike many top-coat sealers sold today that trap moisture below the surface, NANO creates a flexible, breathable barrier which allows water vapor to escape. This key feature helps prevent damage to wood caused by water intrusion, such as: wood rot, decay, mold & mildew growth, cracking & splitting. Typical wood sealers form a barrier on the surface of the wood, trapping moisture below the surface. As the water evaporates, it causes the surface coating and the substrate to crack & peel, leaving a broken surface that requires continued maintenance and is susceptible to additional damage. SEAL-ONCE uses cutting-edge, nano-particle technology to allow wood to breath and help prevent water vapor damage by protecting wood from the inside out.

Water-based Product that Will Not Harm People, Pets, Plants, Livestock or Marine Life.

SEAL-ONCE products are ultra-low VOC, low odor, non-toxic, non-flammable and non-ozone depleting. They are safer for the environment and do not contain nitrates, phosphorous compounds or heavy metals like many Oil-based sealers & stains on the market today.

Quick & Easy Application

Apply first coat with a synthetic brush; pump-up garden sprayer; air-assisted; and/or airless sprayer. Use 15-17 tip and medium to coarse spray pattern. When spraying, always back brush for best results. Second coat can be applied once first coat has penetrated but is still damp. Second coat must be applied within one hour of applying first coat. For best results, apply in the shade and out of direct sunlight.

Available in 11 Tinted Wood Stain Colors

NANO can be tinted for use as wood stain in any of the 11 color tints available: Clear, Light Brown, Natural, Brown, Mahogany, Redwood, Bronze Cedar, Cedar, Black, Battleship Gray, Shale Gray & Cape Cod Gray. The tints are sold separately and when mixed with Clear, the tinted formula provides additional UV protection from harmful sun rays.

Surface Preparation & Coverage

Approximate coverage: 250-350 sq. ft./gallon per coat. Actual coverage will vary due to the porosity of the surface. All surfaces should be cleaned with SEAL-ONCE All Wood Cleaner before sealing for best penetration and performance. Remove all old coatings, dust, debris and loose material. Remove oil, grease, algae, grime, mill glaze and mold and mildew stains with appropriate cleaners.

Question: How can i get the msds for this product

Question: what is the coverage for one gallon
Answer: Based on my experience putting it on ipe (Brazilian ironwood), if it's a first coat on non-oiled wood, I wouldn't plan on a gallon covering more than about 200 sq ft. You need to apply a second coat within 3-4 months to reinforce it, and that may cover more like 300 sq ft, depending on how long between the coats. You might squeeze out more coverage each time if you're judicious applying it. Assuming the deck boards are 5.5", I would recommend using a or 9" staining pad on a handle for first putting it on, then wipe it in with a rag or staining pad. You have to wait 30 minutes before wiping it in, so I would do four boards, skip the next four (so I have a place to stand when coming back to wipe it), do the next four, skip four and so on. Then later I would come back to do the other groups of four boards. Don't roll anything like a grill across the deck for at least two days after having oiled it, so it needs lots of time to fully cure. It can look terrific when you're done.
Question: Would this be appropriate for use on the exterior of an antique southwestern style wood front door
Answer: not sure on door - i used it on ipe decking - not happy with it - turned black - lost all of the beautiful colors of ice wood.
Question: Is it required to sand an ipe deck before applying ipe oil
Answer: No. The only instance where this is required would be when other types of finishes had been applied in the past and may prevent penetration.
