13 best cedar stains
Cedar stains are products used to enhance and protect cedar wood surfaces. These stains are part of the finishes and sealers category in the realm of paints, wall treatments, and tools for home improvement. Cedar, being a popular wood choice for its natural beauty and durability, often benefits from staining to bring out its color and grain while providing a protective layer.
Cedar stains come in various types, including oil-based, water-based, and gel-based stains. Each type has its own characteristics and application methods. Oil-based stains often provide deep penetration into the wood, bringing out the richness of the cedar's natural color. Water-based stains, on the other hand, are known for their quick drying time and ease of cleanup. Gel-based stains are thicker in consistency and can be easier to apply, especially on vertical surfaces.
When choosing a cedar stain, considerations should be made regarding the desired color, opacity, and level of protection. Some stains offer transparent, semi-transparent, or solid color finishes, allowing for different levels of visibility of the wood grain. Additionally, it's important to ensure that the stain is designed for exterior or interior use, depending on the intended application.
Proper preparation of the cedar surface, such as cleaning and sanding, is crucial before applying the stain to achieve the best results. Following manufacturer instructions regarding application techniques and drying times is essential for a successful staining project.

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the warranty on this |
Answer: | I don't believe there is any warranty. We applied it two years ago and the covered areas still look good. The section in direct Sun...needs to have it applied again. |
Question: | How long can the product be stored once the container is opened |
Answer: | We actually used some that we had stored in our garage that was left over from the last time we stained our siding and that was in the summer of 2012, 6 yrs ago. When we removed the lid, it looked like it had become a gel but my husband used a drill with a paint mixer/stirrer tool and it became liquefied again. We applied it to the siding without incident and the color matched the new 5 gallon containers we bought this summer . |
Question: | I have 275 ft of fence plus a gate- what's the coverage with using a sprayer |
Answer: | I’m in the process of staining my fence (I am using a different brand) with a semi-transparent stain. I have 187’ of fence at 5’ high including 2 gates. Applied with a roller and brush, I’m going to need around 13 gallons. My recommendation is rent a sprayer from Home Depot. You’ll save time and money as you’ll use less product and it will go much much faster. |
Question: | we have a heavy dining set and i am worried about scratches after i stain, how does it hold up to heavy chairs moving back and forth |
Answer: | I have a deck/patio furniture set, including a cast iron umbrella base. Lots of use over the last year with no evidence of scratches in the deck. The stain penetrates the wood rather than building a barrier so dragging stuff across the boards won't take it off provided the wood is properly prepared. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Are you able to still see the wood grain after applying |
Answer: | Yes, since it's really a stain. I used on a bare wood chair which had never been painted and I used the cedar color on. I also used it on an old rattan chair in a darker color and it turned out perfectly. You can see the grain on both items. |
Question: | Is this the price for one can |
Answer: | Yes. Only one can came to me when I ordered. |
Question: | Can this be applied over fading exterior latex stain? Thank you |
Answer: | I applied it over NEW lattice for a garden trellis- sorry, but I do not know about latex-you might give it a try as long as the old will not peel off. Hope this helps. ^__^ |
Question: | Dose this need a clear finish on top to pertect the stain |
Answer: | I used the stain to stain my mailbox post. Didn't use a clear finish over it. I liked the matte finish look. It held up in the weather just fine. |

User questions & answers
Question: | can I mix 450 stain with 450 topcoat |
Answer: | I personally would never mix 450 stain with 450 topcoat as I don’t believe the resulting finish would be as great as using the products individually. However the manufacturer states that you could use 450 topcoat as a toner by mixing it with 5-10 percent 450 stain by volume. Please see the manufacturer’s website for details. |

Answer: | Solid, worked nice but had to put two coats to really cover good. |
Question: | So is this 1gallon or 16 gallons? I’ve seen a similar question but I wanna be sure |
Answer: | One (1) gal. 1-gallon. |
Question: | In the description, it says 16 gallon. What size is it |
Answer: | I got 16 gallons! It took 3 UPS guys to deliver it to me. Cheaper than drinking water! |

How much stain do you need to buy?
One gallon of wood stain covers approximately 250-350 square feed, which is enough for a small to medium deck. It should also cover both sides of a 25 foot long fence or a couple pieces of furniture.
Two Gallons
Two gallons of wood stain cover approximately 600 square feed, which should be more than enough for the standard deck project or a 50 foot long fence.
Three or more Gallons
Three or more gallons of wood stain will most likely only be needed on large projects, as they should cover over 850 square feed.
Note: Solid Color Stain requires two coats. You should effectively double your gallons purchased when using a solid.
How To Stain Your Wood Deck In 3 Easy Steps
Sweep debris from deck and then use a product such as Olympic Premium Deck Cleaner to penetrate the wood and lift dirt to the surface to be cleaned, as well as clean stains caused by mildew, dirt, algae and mold. Allow surface to dry.
STEP 2
Tape off any surfaces you don’t want stained. Also, avoid staining in direct sunlight or on hot surfaces because the stain will dry too fast to penetrate properly.
STEP 3
For clear, toner and semi-transparent stains, apply a thin coat with a high-quality brush, roller, paint pad, or spray. For solid stains, apply two thin coats with a brush, roller, or paint pad. To avoid lap marks, apply to a few boards at a time, keeping a wet edge.
For best results, backbrush into the surface to work finish into the wood and ensure the coating is even. Make sure to treat all areas of the wood, including joints, edges and ends.
You’re going to want to follow the directions on your stain container to determine if anything needs done after your final application.

User questions & answers
Question: | will this work in paint gun |
Answer: | yes it will, that's how I applied it. |
Question: | Will be applying to white cedar fence. How dry does the wood have to be |
Answer: | I did not heed the "one year" to dry on the new portion of my deck. Did old and new at the same time when the new portion was perhaps 2 months old. There was a definite difference. I washed and brightened both. Also did two coats. The 2nd coat was done while the first coat was still wet as per instructions. Also brushed vs. rolled. The stain seeped into the older wood much better and the color is richer. Don't believe the stain will last for years. In covered areas yes, it does. But my deck area that gets full S.Carolina sun, does not last the year. I re-stained last year and will be doing a layer of water proofing on horizontal surfaces this year in hopes that I won't have to stain again for a while. I am still happy that I bought the water based just because of the clean up and the ease of re-staining even if I feel I had to do it much quicker than if I had used oil based. |
Question: | Can I use this on my new cream colored bamboo blinds? Unsure about the method they were colored, but almost no sheen. Want stain protection in kitchen |
Answer: | Hard to say without looking at the wood , but if the wood still looks porous enough we're the Stain can soak in some I would think a light coat possibly 2 would do it. It's very thin milky color but dries clear |
Question: | I am applying this to a fence. Would you recommend it for fences? Also, if you have used this product how well is it holding up |
Answer: | Using it for 10 years, great on fences. Apply W weed oil sprayer. Brush W 4" throw away brush as needed. Time between coats varies W the look you want. 2-3 years looks great. At 5 years fading is noticeable. Apply when cool. Dampen surfaces to get soak in. |
Question: | Can I use this on kitchen cabinets made with walnut veneer? My goal is to keep the natural raw, light look but also see the grain, not milky |
Answer: | No, don’t use on kitchen cabinets. Instead use water base polyurethane. Easy clean up and is just as good as oil base polyurethane. |
Question: | Can this be used to seal laminate flooring |
Answer: | It is not for interior use. Also you cannot stain , paint or varnish over Seal-Once products. Seal-Once must be applied to raw wood. |
Question: | Can this be used over an oil base stain |
Answer: | No. |
Question: | What’s the best product for Douglas fir pergola |
Answer: | No, this Seal Once product is not made for pergola floors, it has a dull finish. Not shiny. I would think you would want a poly eyrthane, which is durable and has a shine, recommend a semi-gloss. I would suggest you go to Sherwin Williams and consult their opinion. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be applied to a deck that the wood is pine treated wood |
Answer: | Some say wait a year to stain and some say do it right away. I called Cabot with a question at 1-800-877-8246 and they answered pretty fast. I used this on an old deck and it came out very dark but I was ok with that. Couldnt find 7 gallons all at one place. Had to brush it all in to look good. $40 for a gallon is a good price. Accidentally bough $40 for a quart. Make sure you read description. This is a special oil/water mix. It rinses with water. |
Question: | Is this easily removed from metal balusters? Does the natural make the wood much darker |
Answer: | Yep, just have rag with you and wipe it off. This is a great stain, highly recommend it. So, I purchased the Natural Cedar, the stain looks milky in the can, but applies and as it drys, gives a rich Cedar color. |
Question: | How many square feet (approximately) will a 1-gal can cover |
Answer: | If you sand/prep before and wash planks - 1 gal will get you at least 350 sq feet. |
Question: | What is the difference between the Heartwood 19204 and the Heartwood 3004? Thanks |
Answer: | You can call Cabot at 1-800-US-STAIN (877-8246) and they answer pretty quickly. The 19204 is probably the new miscible oil/water mix. And the 3004 would be the classic oil mix. You cannot mix the two or use one on top of the other but you can clean the 19204 brushes after with water. They claim the new mix is more durable. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this a solid color stain or transparent |
Answer: | The product 80111-1 Woodland Oil Mountain Cedar stain is a translucent or what we call a “transparent” coating, it is not a semi-transparent or solid stain. The Woodland oil is less pigmented then a semi-transparent stain. |
Question: | Do you need to wipe this stain off after waiting a few minutes? Or do you just brush it on and let it dry |
Answer: | You brush it on and let it dry. Just make sure you have an even coat of stain with no runs or puddles. |
Question: | Is it made with linseed oil |
Answer: | It says natural oils. Be careful some of this stuff is water base and some of it is oil-based. Make sure you look at the can |
Question: | Will the natural change the color of my wood as I plan to treat the repaired posts only |
Answer: | It doesn't really hide or cover variations in color, but, with age, it will be less distinct. The Natural color is almost transparent. You may need more of a stain to even it out more quickly. |
Question: | How long before applying a second coat |
Answer: | You really need to wait a good 24 hours before sanding/applying a 2nd coat. If it is very humid in your area I would wait longer. It does take longer to finish a project with using this stain, but I have really loved the final product. I've used this on several sets of cabinets and a few smaller projects over the course of 8 years or so. |
Question: | Do you need to sand stained and sealed kitchen cabinets before using this product |
Answer: | I’ve so far used it on worn edges and small worn areas around latches and handles without sanding and resealing. Very satisfied with results. |
Question: | has anyone tried the pickling white? Photos? I’d be using it on an old vintage dark desk and I’m looking for a white weathered look |
Answer: | it works well, but you will get better results if the dark finish is stripped or sanded down.....it is not paint so it needs some bare wood to penetrate. |
Question: | Would this cover faux oak laminate/press wood? If so, what prep is needed |
Answer: | I dont knowing it would stick to fake wood or not. You really need the wood grain to help it adhere. My understanding is that this product doesn't necessarily penetrate the wood fully like a full stain - rather is a layer of stain. You could sand a piece of your project and try a small area to see if it would work. You certainly need to use poly as a final step if it works. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How do you open the metal can |
Answer: | You can use a flat head screw driver to get the lid off or they sell actual paint lid tools at the hardware store. |
Question: | How long has this lasted with lots of sun |
Answer: | It’s been on my fence 1 year and still looks fantastic! Had plenty of sun, rain and some snow. I think it says 3 years? |
Question: | How many feet does 5gallon cover |
Answer: | 5 gallons cover 625 sq. ft. |
Question: | Does it work on concrete |
Answer: | No I do not think it would work on any concrete or stone surface. It's not a paint and I think it would not soak in. I have used it on my wood deck and fence but it really works better on a wooden fence. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is it best to use a clear coat over the gel stain for interior use |
Answer: | Yes. It would be a good idea to use a clear to protect the stain coat from damage. |
Question: | is there anyone who has pictures of the color once finished? Is it a true red color or does it look like a wooden finish |
Answer: | It's a blue based red tone. Old masters crimson fire is a bright, true red. I frequently mix the two to adjust either way. For instance , if I'd like a dark, dark cherry tone, that shows red in the light, I use more burgundy. If I want to see a red tone, but would like a blue base, I use crimson fire , add old burgundy , " to taste". Simply put: buy both |
Question: | have an area about 3x3 in. scratched..so sanded a bit. Will this color over the sanded lighter wood |
Answer: | Yes it will. This is the greatest stuff for filling in scratches, scuffs without the need to sand down or anything first. Just rub in on and wipe off or not. |
Question: | Can this gel go directly over existing stain? Or does it need to be sanded and primed |
Answer: | I did a quick coat over existing, and it came out ok. I was just trying to touch up edges. The can suggest roughing up the surface. Don’t necessarily have to completely sand and prime. The gel is super easy to work with. |

Question: | In the reviews, everyone mentions the light oak color but I don’t see it available. Is it discontinued or renamed |
Answer: | I bought 2 gallons of light oak about a month ago. Look again or call the company. |
Question: | Can I reapply this over the old coat when I need to |
Answer: | I'd clean the boards the best you can and let them dry, and then yes, you can reapply it. It says so on the can. |
Question: | How many sq ft will 2.5 gallons cover |
Answer: | depends. cover says 100 - 150 sq ft per gallon. I used 7.5 gallons on about 600sq ft of deck and barely had enough, that was 2 coats. 1st coat sucked up a lot, 2nd coat went a lot farther |

Answer: | I live at 9000 ft. in the mountains- .wind, rain, snow, UV. I try to touch up every 2-3 years. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How many years does it last |
Answer: | Our cedar fence posts were installed two years ago and stained with Leatherwood. They needed to be re-stained last fall, so 18 months? At that point, we could tell they needed re-stained, but they didn't look too bad. Now they look bad (i.e., washed out/faded). So it appears their two-year promise is a stretch and depends on how well the stain is applied and whether the wood is primarily in shade or sun. |
Question: | is this non toxic |
Answer: | Yes, this is non toxic. There are no toxic raw materials in this product. |
Question: | can this be applied to pressuure treated wood decking |
Answer: | “For any horizontal surfaces like decks we recommend our Wood Defender 200 Series. It is formulated for horizontal surfaces that will be tracked or walked on.” |
Question: | Is it oil based and can I apply with pump up sprayer |
Answer: | Hello and thank you for your question. Our product is in fact an oil based stain and is easily applied with a pump garden style sprayer. If you have a lot of fence to stain, a backpack style pump sprayer may allow you to complete the job more efficiently. To apply, begin at the top of the fence and simply saturate the surface which will allow the product to soak in evenly. The Wood Defender is designed to soak in evenly without any need for back-brushing to achieve a nice even uniform application. One of the most important attributes of the Wood Defender product as compared to other products on the retail market is that the stain can remain in the sprayer for extended amounts of time without causing any problems. For example, if you get started and need to take a break simply work yourself to a corner or a stopping point and set the sprayer down. You can leave the stain in the tank, hose, gun, tip without any issues. Hours later or days later, when your ready to start spraying again shake it up very well and continue where you left off! Once you've completed the job, you may clean out your pump sprayer with mineral spirits and then flush that with fresh water. Now your ready to use the pump sprayer for other projects until your fence needs to be re stained. Thank you for your interest in our Wood Defender Exterior Wood Stains and good luck with your project! |
