| Answer: | This filter is designed to remove particulate (like sand or silt or rust particles) from the water. Sodium after a water softener is dissolved and in solution rather than a particulate, so this filter would not work for that application. Typically to remove dissolved salts, you would use an RO filter for a residential filtration application although some resin based filters would also remove sodium. Your concern over excess sodium in the water brings up another question. Unless you have super high hardness that your water softener is addressing, you should not typically be able to taste the salt in the water. Water softeners work by exchanging two sodium ions for each calcium ion in the water when it is treated. The salt that you put into the brine tank is used to regenerate (refresh) the ion exchange resin in the other tank when it becomes filled with calcium (or iron or manganese or other dissolved ions.) A highly concentrated salt solution is washed across the resin to pull back off the calcium and replace it by sodium. The resin is then rinsed, and most all of the salt solution goes down the drain. | Answer: | The unit comes with a tool to remove the housing. It looks a little like a screwdriver with the end sawed off. There's a metal ring which threads on to the head and holds the cartridge housing in place. You simply insert the "sawed off screwdriver" wrench into one of the holes in the ring and turn it, to tighten or to loosen. It's completely different from the notched wrenches used on plastic filter housings. And please note, when replacing the cartridge, if there's any pressure in the line the ring will not come loose. Besides turning the water off, you must be sure to open a valve somewhere in a sink or something to relieve the pressure. |
