- Lengths can vary from a few feet to several hundred feet, allowing users to choose the appropriate cord length for their specific tasks.
Gauge and Wire Size:
- The gauge or wire size of an extension cord is an essential consideration. Southwire offers extension cords with various gauges to accommodate different power requirements.
- Smaller gauge numbers indicate thicker wires and higher current-carrying capacity. Thicker cords are suitable for heavy-duty applications where more power is needed.
Indoor and Outdoor Use:
- Southwire extension cords are available for both indoor and outdoor use. Outdoor extension cords are designed to withstand exposure to the elements, including rain and UV rays, and are often more ruggedly constructed.

- Some extension cords come with built-in circuit breakers or surge protection to safeguard connected devices.
Specialized Cords:
- Southwire produces specialized extension cords for specific purposes. For example, they offer extension cords with built-in lighted ends or cords designed for use with power tools.

- Southwire is known for producing extension cords with a focus on durability. These cords are typically made with high-quality materials and construction techniques to withstand rough handling and wear.
Compatibility:
- It's important to choose the right extension cord for your specific needs. Ensure that the cord can handle the power requirements of the devices or tools you intend to connect.
- Overloading an extension cord can lead to overheating and pose safety hazards.
Storage and Maintenance:
- Proper storage and maintenance of extension cords are essential for their longevity. Southwire extension cords often come with features like cord reels or storage wraps to keep them organized when not in use.
- Regularly inspect your extension cords for damage and replace them if you notice any signs of wear or fraying.
In summary, Southwire extension cords are trusted products in the field of electrical and home improvement supplies. They come in various configurations to meet different needs, are designed with safety and durability in mind, and are suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications. User questions & answers
Question: | is the wire copper |
Answer: | Yes, I can verify it's copper because I replaced the end on mine. |
Question: | Can I combine the 50 foot with the 100 foot that I already have and use them with a plug in electric mower with a 12 amp motor |
Answer: | Yes, 100' of 12 gauge cord has no noticeable amp drop. As long as the outlet you are using is delivering a full 15 amps, running a 12 amp mower will be fine. Watch out though, you might trip the breaker if you have anything else plugged in on that particular circuit. Especially if it is a 15 amp breaker. |
Question: | What is the truth. is the cord made in usa or china |
Answer: | They are still advertising as made in USA in the picture, but when I received my cord, it was made in China. $35 for a Chinese cord? Are you kidding me?! Bet they are made for $2 or $3 a piece. What a scam! They need to be turned in to the FTC for false advertisement. |
Question: | how many amps is this |
Answer: | If you're asking about the amperage capacity of the 12/3 100' cord, then that answer is 15 amps. Without going into an electrical dissertation, the amperage capacity will be based on intended usage, power (amperage) requirements of the tool being used, continuous or intermittent amperage rating, and most importantly, the rating of your outlet whether residential or commercial. "Most" residential outlets are rated at 15 amps, even if on a 20 amp branch, since there are multiple outlets being fed. Anyway, this cord is good for 15 amps. If you're connecting two, then it's time to look at a dedicated circuit versus extension cords. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Was this made in the U.S.A. or just somewhere on this continent |
Answer: | All i can say is that I've carried in the rain and no water seeped into my bag or on my papers.. Hope this is helpful! |
Question: | Are you able to connect two of these |
Answer: | Yes! I use this backpack to carry college textbooks, notebooks, and my lap top (15 inch) with tons of room to spare. I also carry a tablet, coloring books and a marker case because I work nights and needed room for both at work. It carries additional cords, extension cord, ear buds and other accessories to go along with all of the above. My pack weighs about 35 lbs to lift but is light and well balanced on my back. I still have plenty of room to add a sweatshirt. The pack seems to hold up well to the weight and amount of items. |
Question: | Is this flexible |
Answer: | Made in Vietnam. Not a huge fan of products not made in America, however the backpack is solid I’ve been happy w the purchase. |
Question: | What percentage of the creation of this product was made in or assembled in the united states of america? thx |
Answer: | This is imported. Only 10-20% of Carhhartt products are actually manufactured in the U.S. That is higher than most other U.S companies but definately not as much as you would expect. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this be suitable for a 100 amp 120v arc welder? It’s a kicking horse a100 welder |
Answer: | The cord should 20 amp rated. The outlet should be 20 amps also while using an extension cord. Even plugged directly into an outlet it should be a 20 amp rated outlet |
Question: | Can this be used for refrigerator to connect to an outlet which is 25 ft away |
Answer: | Should be just fine! I used a lot less cord for a lot longer distance. Just check it for extra heat prior to going to bed for the night. Cords can be faulty even with the most Rigid quality control standards. If the cord is hot enough it is uncomfortable to hold un plug immediately and get a different cord! |
Question: | is this work to electric smoker |
Answer: | It’s just a nice high-quality extension cord. The packaging says 15 amps, 1875 watts so I’d presume it works with any device within those parameters. |
Question: | Can it handle 240v A/C ? will the light blow up |
Answer: | Not sure about the light but this cord has 120 volt 15 amp plug and recepticle on the ends. If these are removed, there is no warranty |

User questions & answers
Question: | I'm getting a 1500-watt quartz heater using about 12.5 amps on the highest setting. Will this 50' cord work for connecting to a 15-amp circuit outlet |
Answer: | I would not recommend hooking a heater to an extension cord. However, if you do, be sure and periodically check the connection at the wall and where the heater plugs into the extension cord. If they're warm of hot shut it down for a while. |
Question: | Snow joe snowblower 15a. i have your 100 ft and i need about an extra 15 feet for the end of my driveway can i attach the 50 ft and 100 ft together |
Answer: | Likely, but make certain code weight is at least the same. Also, on the label, you will notice the longer the extension, the more you increase loss of power. I know nothing about electric snow blowers, and the draw they require. At 100 ft of line, and than 150 feet, you may notice reduced power in your 15 amp snow blower. Review the information on the back of the package of the first cord, and the blower manual. Sorry not to be offering more insight. |
Question: | What is the insulation factor (temp) of this wire |
Answer: | UL Rated Temp: -40C to 60C |
Question: | Is this cord still usa made as of march |
Answer: | Hi..I just received the cord not long ago this year..It appears to be of good quality..the connection ends seem to be solid, and the power out connection has a Neon light in it for power verification. The outer sheath is flexible Red /White and Blue..The packaging had a couple of markings..made in the USA... It didn't come with a Red Trump hat..But I do like the way it looks..and I suspect it will last a long time for my DJ/Band uses.. Be well Mave |

User questions & answers
Question: | Where is it made |
Answer: | Gee, I dunno........my cable doesn't have any labeling regarding point of origin or manufacture. My cable has plenty of technical numbers and performance related info stamped into the outer insulation sleeve in addition to two tags (UL), (Use Warning). I did find this info in a pdf file.....Solid Service Platform -We utilize more than 2 million sq ft of strategicallylocated, state-of-the-art, ISO-certified manufacturingand distribution facilities. This national footprint andextensive investment in service systems powers usto deliver more than 70,000 SKUs with a better than97% first-fill rate. Kinda sounds like USA designed/engineered, but made in China.......dunno for sure. What I do know for sure is that this cable is super heavy duty and has performed flawlessly while powering my 15,000 BTU A.C. unit. I have no reservations regarding this cable and would purchased another without hesitation. It certainly doesn't look, feel and perform like a typical Chinese product. If you really must satisfy your curiosity you can always call ColemanCable at 800-323-9355.......good luck!!!! Sorry I couldn't more helpful. |
Question: | Can I turn this into a 30 Amp extension cable by putting adapters on each end. This would be to extend a 30 amp car charger cord |
Answer: | The answer to that question depends on whether you are needing to get a full 30 amps at 120 volts from this. There will be a loss and I would recommend that you do a search for "Voltage Drop Table". I just looked at one that stated that 6 guage was recommended for 100 foot runs to keep voltage drop within the 3% range for a 120 volt, single phase circuit. Hope that helps. |
Question: | It doesn't list that it is solid copper. is it solid copper wiring? or copper clad aluminum wiring? and is it a full 10 awg specification |
Answer: | Yes this is a solid copper wiring and its is a fully 10 gauge cord |
Question: | I just bought a generator for power outages. It says use cord sets that are rated for 125v AC loads at 20 amps or greater. will 15 amp work |
Answer: | 10 gauge cord is rated for up to 30 amps. The plugs are rated 15 amps, which is why this cord is advertised as supporting a max of 15 amps. You could probably push 20 amps ok but don't let any kind of code or safety inspector see it. I wouldn't try pushing 30 amps through the standard 15 amp plugs though. If you are not integrating the generator into house wiring, I would suggest buying two of these cords and using them separately as most generators have two standard outlets each with their own 15A or 20A breakers on them. If you intend to integrate it into the house wiring then you need to use the locking 120/240 plug and get yourself a transfer switch (auto or manual, manual is loads cheaper). For non-integrated use, this oversized cord is good even if you don't use the copper's full 30A rating (only need 14guage for 15A, 12guage for 20A, derate 20% for >3hr continuous use), because it will let you locate the generator a safe distance away from your entrance/window (carbon monoxide fumes) with less voltage drop from wire loss. You may notice a small performance improvement if you also use the cord as an extension cord for high-amperage power tools. |
Question: | How tight a radius curve can this cord make? I want to make a 90 degree turn at the corner of structure |
Answer: | It's flexible and will go around corners with ease.It is a flexible cable so it won't hold a perfect 90 degree angle.I highly recommend it. |
Question: | If light quits working does cord keep working |
Answer: | The cord should still work but we would suggest you contact our customer service department for a replacement. E: [email protected] Product #2579SW000A Thank you |
Question: | I already have the 100 ft. Southwire 12 gauge & would like to add 50 more ft. Would the added 50 ft. put much strain on my Worx 12 amp leaf blower |
Answer: | That should be ok, assuming your voltage at the outlet isn't marginal to begin with. The Southwire 12/3 SJTW is good quality and won't melt under that type of use. It can deliver the current. If you want to reduce the voltage drop over the 150 ft total length buy a 10/3 cord instead. Then plug your 100 ft 12/3, into the 50 ft 10/3, so the heavier 10/3 doesn't weigh you down as you work. |
Question: | Is this extension cord really made in USA |
Answer: | Yes this cord is manufacture red in the USA |
