6 best thermostat for home heating

A thermostat for home heating is a device used to regulate and control the temperature of a heating system in a residential setting. It is a crucial component of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. Nonprogrammable thermostats, in particular, offer basic temperature control without the advanced scheduling features found in programmable or smart thermostats.

Key features and aspects of nonprogrammable thermostats for home heating include:

  1. Temperature Control: The primary function of a thermostat is to set and maintain a desired temperature within a space. Nonprogrammable thermostats allow users to manually adjust the temperature as needed.

  2. Simplicity: Nonprogrammable thermostats are typically straightforward and easy to use. They do not have the advanced scheduling options that programmable or smart thermostats offer.

  3. Basic Display: They usually have a basic digital or analog display that shows the current temperature and allows users to adjust the setpoint.

  4. Compatibility: Nonprogrammable thermostats are compatible with a wide range of heating systems, including furnaces, boilers, heat pumps, and electric baseboard heaters.

  5. Wiring Compatibility: It's important to ensure that the thermostat is compatible with the existing wiring of your heating system. Some thermostats may require professional installation if the wiring needs to be modified.

  6. Power Source: Nonprogrammable thermostats can be powered by either low-voltage or line-voltage systems. It's essential to choose a thermostat that matches the power requirements of your heating system.

  7. Accuracy: Modern thermostats are designed to provide accurate temperature readings and precise control over the heating system.

  8. Heat/Cool Switch: Some nonprogrammable thermostats have a switch to toggle between heating and cooling modes. This is particularly important for systems that provide both heating and air conditioning.

  9. Budget-Friendly: Nonprogrammable thermostats are often more affordable than their programmable or smart counterparts, making them a cost-effective option for homeowners seeking basic temperature control.

  10. Durability: They are designed to be durable and long-lasting, ensuring reliable performance over time.

Remember, when installing or replacing a thermostat, it's important to follow manufacturer instructions and, if necessary, consult a professional HVAC technician to ensure proper installation and compatibility with your heating system. This information is based on general knowledge as of 2023, and specific details about thermostats may have changed after that date.

User questions & answers

Question: My thermostat is only used for heating the house and only has 2 wires, a red and white. Can i still use this ecobee
Answer: If you have a really old 2-wire system, one that does NOT have modern solid state controls, then Ecobee won't work right off the shelf, even with their 2-3 wire power conversion module. These heating plants predate the 1980s and use "dry contact" thermostats. You can make it work if you install a 24v isolation relay. Ecobee outlines the procedure on their web site, but it takes some basic electrical wiring knowledge. I'm not sure if you can use the 2-wire conversion module with an isolation relay - it should be possible somehow or other. If you have a third wire running to the thermostat (it's often there) then you should use it to run 24V to the Ecobee, and ignore the conversion module.
Question: Is there a provision to bypass the 'auto off' motion sensor so that my dogs don't suffer from the heat when I'm out
Answer: Yes- you can disable the Smart Home/Away feature under the "Sensors" section of the interface, so that the thermostat will follow only the schedule/preset temperatures. In my case, I disabled it because I wanted the opposite functionality (I didn't want the system turning on if I stopped at home for a hour over lunch). Note that the "Follow Me" feature is a separate setting (found in the Sensors section as well) that allows the system to track where you are in the house and attempt to heat/cool that part of the house closer to your desired setpoint.
Question: Does the main thermostat have a sensor for the first floor? Or is the white sensor needed for that floor? Is the black hub a sensor
Answer: Main thermostat and white (remote) includes a temperature sensor and a motion sensor. First, you don't have to use the remote sensor. Second, if you use the remote sensor, the main sensor will combine the input of both (main and remote) temperature sensors and based on the amount of time spent in each area using the motion sensor. If motion is detected more near the main and less near the remote (as a %), then the main temperature will weigh heavier than the remote. As well, you do not need to use remotes and can be assigned to work during selected schedules only. It's quite amazing, but I haven't used them on my system yet. I figured I would learn the rest of the system before I introduced them.
Question: is this a different model than the ecobee3 that is slightly less expensive? Also if wifi is out can you control it fully manually
Answer: Yes, this is a different model then the ecobee3 lite. The ecobee will still be able to function as a thermostat and talk to the sensors, if your wifi goes out. You can still manually control your heating and cooling at your ecobee without wifi.
Question: Compatible with alexa? do i have to buy nexia bridge for it to work
Answer: For the thermostat alone, no nexia bridge is needed.
Question: Can you set Temperature limits on this thermostat
Answer: Yes you can.
Question: The connection key to setup wifi will not work so i am not able to connect it to wifi. anyone know the fix
Answer: Must use your phone and the app.
Question: Is this thermostat compatible with the xr624 connection
Answer: Yes, it is compatible. The XR724 replaces XL624.

User questions & answers

Question: How accurate is it? I would be using it for a convection electric heater
Answer: Yes, the temporary bypass enables temperature override without changing programming.
Question: What is the size? 9 X 7 X 4 appears to be very large
Answer: Probably not. This is for a resistive load and the pump motor is an inductive load. I would check with Honeywell to be sure.
Question: How is this supposed to mount? It's described as if it is a replacement for a thermostat. That's not my situation
Answer: 2 main differences that I see:#1 the wattage is different. for the th106, you have 2000/4000 Watts for (120/240 volts) and the th104 only has 1750/3500 watts. it's not a big deal unless you have requirements on how many or how big of heaters you are controlling. For me, I have 1 medium and 2 small baseboards which totals to 2000 watts on 120 volts.#2 the programming is different. on the th106 you can specify temps for each day of the week-differently, whereas the 104's programming allows for weekend/weekday modes.
Question: Is this a double pole thermostat
Answer: This unit is wired directly to your 220v 2-wire circuit for the thermostat. This is a line voltage thermostat.

About Honeywell

Honeywell's roots reach to 1885, when an inventor named Albert Butz patented the furnace regulator and alarm. He formed the Butz Thermo-Electric Regulator Co., Minneapolis, in April, 1886, and soon invented a device he called the "damper flapper” – an ingenious predecessor to the modern thermostat.
